A SOI-based thermo-optic waveguide switch matrix worked at 1.55 mu m, integrated with spot size converters is designed and fabricated for the first time. The insertion loss and polarization dependent loss are less than 13dB and 2dB, respectively. The extinction ratio is larger than 19dB. The response time is less than 5 mu s and the power consumption of the switch cell is about 200mW.

An embedded architecture of optical vector matrix multiplier (OVMM) is presented. The embedded architecture is aimed at optimising the data flow of vector matrix multiplier (VMM) to promote its performance. Data dependence is discussed when the OVMM is connected to a cluster system. A simulator is built to analyse the performance according to the architecture. According to the simulation, Amdahl's law is used to analyse the hybrid opto-electronic system. It is found that the electronic part and its interaction with optical part form the bottleneck of system.

Methomyl, an extremely toxic pesticide, is widely used in agriculture. A strain named mdw-1 capable of degrading methomyl rapidly was successfully isolated from activated sludge in this study. It could utilize methomyl as the sole carbon or nitrogen source. The optimal temperature and medium pH for its growth and methomyl biodegradation were 30 degrees C and 7.0, respectively. It was identified as a Paracoccus sp. according to its morphological features, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis based on the sequence of 16S rDNA. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that methomyl could be completely transformed to S-methyl-N-hydroxythioacetamidate in 10 h of incubation with the isolate mdw-1.

In this paper, we propose a deterministic column-based matrix decomposition method. Conventional column-based matrix decomposition (CX) computes the columns by randomly sampling columns of the data matrix. Instead, the newly proposed method (termed as CX_D) selects columns in a deterministic manner, which well approximates singular value decomposition. The experimental results well demonstrate the power and the advantages of the proposed method upon three real-world data sets.

In scattering calculations using the T-matrix method, the calculation of the T-matrix involves multiplication and inversion of matrices. These two types of matrix operations are time-consuming, especially for the matrices with large size. Petrov et al. [D. Petrov, Y. Shkuratov, G. Videen, Opt. Lett. 32 (2007) 1168] proposed an optimized matrix inversion technique, which suggests the inversion of two matrices, each of which contains half the number of rows. This technique reduces time-consumption significantly. On the basis of this approach, we propose another fast calculation technique for scattering in the T-matrix method, which obtains the scattered fields through carrying out only the operations between matrices and the incident field coefficient. Numerical results show that this technique can decrease time-consumption by more than half that of the optimized matrix inversion technique by Petrov et al. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. In this article, we report an optical fluoride probe based on microstructured polymer optical fibers (MPOFs) which is modified with morin-Al complex doped silica gel film. This probe is fabricated by sol-gel fluxion coating process. Sol solution doped with morin-Al is directly inhaled into array holes of MPOF and then forms morin-Al-gel matrix film in them. The sensing probe shows different fluorescence intensity to different fluoride ion concentrations in the aqueous solution. The range of response is 550 mmol/L, under the condition of pH 4.6. A matrix analysis for free-space switching networks, such as perfect shuffle-exchange omega, crossover and Banyan is presented. On the basis of matrix analysis, the equivalence of these three switching networks and the route selection between input and output ports are simply explained. Furthermore, an optical crossover switching network, where MQW SEED arrays are used as electrically addressed four-function interchange nodes, is described and the optical crossover interconnection of 64 x 64, and high-speed four-function, interchange nodes is demonstrated in the experiment.

A matrix formulation has been developed and applied to simulate large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction (LACBED) patterns from the Si/GexSi1-x strained layer superlattice (SLS). Good quantitative agreement has been achieved between experimental and simulated patterns. By utilizing dynamical HOLZ line patterns, we demonstrate that an accuracy of better than 0.1% can be achieved in the determination of the averaged lattice constant of a SLS, and the averaged number of layers of atoms within one period of SLS can be determined up to a single monolayer.

A scattering matrix method for investigating the electron transport in quantum waveguides is presented. By dividing the structure into a number of transverse slices, the global scattering matrix is obtained by the composition of the individual scattering matrices associated with each interface. Complicated geometries and inhomogeneous external potentials are included in the formulation. It is shown that the proposed scattering matrix method possesses many advantages over the traditional mode-matching and transfer matrix methods, especially in treating the electron wave propagation in complicated geometries. Justification for the method is provided by the unitarity of the calculated scattering matrix, and the consistency of the results with those obtained by the recursive Green's function method.

Thermally stable high-resistivity regions have been formed using hydrogen ion implantation at three energies (50, 100, and 180 keV) with three corresponding doses (6 X 10(14) 1.2 X 10(15), and 3 X 10(15) cm(-2)), oxygen implantation at 280keV with 2 X 10(14) cm(-2) as well as subsequent annealing at about 600 degrees C for 10-20s, in AlGaAs/GaAs multiple epitaxial heterojunction structure. After anncaling at 600 degrees C, the sheet resistivity increases by six orders more of magnitude from the as-grown values. This creation of high resistivity is different from that of the conventional damage induced isolation by H or O single implantation which becomes ineffective when anneal is carried out at 400-600 degrees C and the mechanism there of is discussed.

A transfer matrix approach is presented for the study of electron conduction in an arbitrarily shaped cavity structure embedded in a quantum wire. Using the boundary conditions for wave functions, the transfer matrix at an interface with a discontinuous potential boundary is obtained for the first time. The total transfer matrix is calculated by multiplication of the transfer matrix for each segment of the structure as well as numerical integration of coupled second-order differential equations. The proposed method is applied to the evaluation of the conductance and the electron probability density in several typical cavity structures. The effect of the geometrical features on the electron transmission is discussed in detail. In the numerical calculations, the method is found to be more efficient than most of the other methods in the literature and the results are found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained by the recursive Green's function method.
