Dangerous Coagulations? constitutes a departure from the more formulaic Foucault work that has emerged and highlights new possibilities for undertaking problematizing approaches to educational research.

Architects regularly employ design as a problem-solving tool in the built environment. Within the design process, architects apply design thinking to reframe problems as opportunities, take advantage of contradictory information to develop new solutions, and differentiate outcomes based on context. This research aims to investigate how design can be better positioned to develop greater differentiated value to an architect’s current service offering, and how design as a strategy could be applied as a driver of business innovation within the Australian architecture industry. The research will explore literature relating to the future of architecture, the application of design thinking, and the benefits of strategic design. The future intent of the research is to develop strategies that improve the value offering of architects, and develop design led solutions that could be applied successfully to the business of architecture.

A role for oestrogen in regulating fluid reabsorption in the monkey epididymis was recently demonstrated. Here, these Studies are extended to identify potential oestrogen-regulated proteins in the cauda region of monkey epididymis treated with vehicle and oestrogen receptor antagonist (ICI 182780). Two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis was used to identify the proteins. The results indicated down-regulation of WNT4 in the ICI-182780-treated monkey cauda. In addition. the Wnt4f mRNA concentration was also reduced in the caput regions of ICI-182780-treated rats and oestrogen receptor knockout mice. WNT4 is a key regulator of gonadal differentiation in humans and mice and plays a pivotal role in early mouse embryogenesis. The results of the present Study establish the presence of WNT4 in the monkey epididymis and its regulation by oestrogen, and Suggest a role for WNT4 in maintaining epididymal homeostasis.

This thesis addresses the following broad research question: what did it mean to be a disabled Revolutionary War veteran in the early United States during the period from 1776 to roughly 1840? The study approaches the question from two angles: a state-centred one and an experiential one. In both cases, the theoretical framework employed comes from disability studies. Consequently, disability is regarded as a sociocultural phenomenon rather than a medical condition. The state-centred dimension of the study explores the meaning of disability and disabled veterans to the early American state through an examination of the major military pension laws of the period. An analysis of this legislation, particularly the invalid pension acts of 1793 and 1806, indicates that the early United States represents a key period in the development of the modern disability category. The experiential approach, in contrast, shifts the focus of attention away from the state towards the lived experiences of disabled veterans. It seeks to address the issue of whether or not the disabilities of disabled veterans had any significant material impact on their everyday lives. It does this through a comparison of the situation of 153 disabled veterans with that of an equivalent number of nondisabled veterans. The former group received invalid pensions while the latter did not. In comparing the material conditions of disabled and nondisabled veterans, a wide range of primary sources from military records to memoirs and letters are used. The most important sources in this regard are the pension application papers submitted by veterans in the early nineteenth century. These provide us with a unique insight into the everyday lives of veterans. Looking at the issue of experience through the window of the pension files reveals that there was not much difference in the broad contours of disabled and nondisabled veteran life. This finding has implications for the theorisation of disability that are highlighted and discussed in the thesis. The main themes covered in this study are: the wartime experiences of injured American soldiers, the military pension establishment of the early United States and the legal construction of disability, and the post-war working and family lives of disabled veterans. DURING recent years, there has been increasing amount of evidence regarding the importance of protozoa in the aerobic purification of sewage1–4 and, more recently, some quantitative observations on protozoa in determining the condition of sludge and quality of effluent have been recorded5–10. The evidence so far obtained has, however, been only indirect, chiefly owing to the difficulty in separating the protozoa from the associated bacteria. This has now been achieved and the object of this note is to show that the isolated protozoa can bring about practically all the changes associated with the purification. The part played by the bacteria is almost negligible.

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan The Simpsons (Simpsonit) animaatiosarjassa esiintyvien sanallisten alluusioiden kääntymistä suomenkielisiksi tekstityksiksi. Tarkoituksena on selvittää kvantitatiivisen analyysin keinoin, miten kääntäjä Sari Luhtanen käyttää eri käännösstrategioita hyväkseen. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty kuudesta Simpsonit-sarjan jaksosta esityskausilta 7-11. Työn teoriaosiossa määritellään aluksi intertekstuaalisuuden sekä alluusion käsitteet, jonka jälkeen käsitellään alluusiota huumorin välineenä. Mahdollisten käännösstrategioiden määrittely tukeutuu Ritva Leppihalmeen alluusioiden kääntämistä käsittelevään tutkimukseen. Leppihalmeen terminologiaa mukaillen alluusiot jaetaan erisnimialluusioihin ja suoriin tekstilainoihin. Simpsonit-sarjan olemusta ja tekijöiden tarkoitusperiä pohtii oma lukunsa, joka sisältää myös kääntäjä Luhtasen ajatuksia käännöstyöstä, sekä haastattelussa esiintulleita yksityiskohtia käännösprosessista. Tekstittämisen erityispiirteitä kääntämisen alalajina käsitellään Henrik Gottliebin sekä Jan Ivarssonin määritelmien kautta. Gottliebin määritelmää elokuvasta polysemioottisena, neljästä eri viestintäkanavasta koostuvana kokonaisuutena sovelletaan myös tutkimuksen empiirisessä osuudessa. Tekstittämiseen todetaan kohdistuvan merkittäviä teknisiä rajoituksia, jotka tehokkaasti estävät kääntäjää pyrkimästä muodolliseen vastaavuuteen lähdetekstin kanssa. Koska tekstitys kuitenkin esitetään aina alkuperäisen materiaalin yhteydessä, sen voi mieltää ylimääräiseksi viestintäkanavaksi jonka avulla kääntäjä auttaa kohdeyleisöä kokemaan tekstitetyn ohjelman alkuperäisen yleisön kokemusta vastaavalla tavalla (dynaaminen vastaavuus). Tutkimuksen empiirinen osuus tarkastelee materiaalissa esiintyviä alluusioiden käännöksiä kvantitatiivisen analyysin muodossa, jonka jälkeen Luhtasen tekemiä käännösvalintoja käsitellään yksityiskohtaisemmin esimerkkien avulla. Luhtasen todetaan sisällyttävän dialogissa esiintyvät alluusiot tekstityksiin lähes aina, mutta useimmiten jättävän tekstityksistä pois pelkästään visuaalisella kanavalla esiintyvät sanallisen alluusiot. Erisnimialluusiot Luhtanen kääntää tyypillisesti muuttumattomina, mutta harkintansa mukaan saattaa Suomessa täysin tuntemattomien nimien kohdalla tarjota myös selittävän käännöksen. Suoria tekstilainoja kääntäessään hän ei näytä suosivan mitään tiettyä strategiaa. Erillisiä selityksiä sisältäviä strategioita Luhtanen ei käytä. Yleisen alluusioiden runsauden lisäksi Simpsonit-sarjan erityispiirteenä näyttävät olevan visuaalisella kanavalla ajoittain esiintyvät, nopeasti ohi menevät sanallisten alluusioiden keskittymät. Näiden alluusiokeskittymien edessä kääntäjä on usein voimaton, ja Luhtanen onkin lähes aina jättänyt tällaiset alluusiokeskittymät kokonaan suomentamatta.

A formula has been derived for the mean-square error in the phases of crystal reflections determined through the multiwavelength anomalous scattering method.The error is written in terms of a simple function of the positions in the complex plane of the 'centres' corresponding to the different wavelengths. For the case of three centres, the mean-square error is inversely proportional to the area of the triangle formed by them.

1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) studies have been carried out in the temperature range 100 K to 4 K, at two Larmor frequencies 11.4 and 23.3 MHz, in the mixed system of betaine phosphate and glycine phosphite (BPxGPI(1-x)), to study the effects of disorder on the proton group dynamics. Analysis of T1 data indicates the presence of a number of inequivalent methyl groups and a gradual transition from classical reorientations to quantum tunneling rotations. At lower temperatures, microstructural disorder in the local environments of the methyl groups, result in a distribution in the activation energy (Ea) and the torsional energy gap (E01). For certain values of x, the magnetisation recovery shows biexponential behaviour at lower temperatures.

Some whole leaf-clearing and staining techniques are described for the microscopic observation of the origin of powdery mildew conidiophores, whether from external mycelium or internal mycelium, emerging through stomata. These techniques enable separation of the two genera, Oidiopsis and Streptopodium, in the Erysiphaceae.

In school environments, children are constantly exposed to mixtures of airborne substances, derived from a variety of sources, both in the classroom and in the school surroundings. It is important to evaluate the hazardous properties of these mixtures, in order to conduct risk assessments of their impact on chil¬dren’s health. Within this context, through the application of a Maximum Cumulative Ratio approach, this study aimed to explore whether health risks due to indoor air mixtures are driven by a single substance or are due to cumulative exposure to various substances. This methodology requires knowledge of the concentration of substances in the air mixture, together with a health related weighting factor (i.e. reference concentration or lowest concentration of interest), which is necessary to calculate the Hazard Index. Maximum cumulative ratio and Hazard Index values were then used to categorise the mixtures into four groups, based on their hazard potential and therefore, appropriate risk management strategies. Air samples were collected from classrooms in 25 primary schools in Brisbane, Australia. Analysis was conducted based on the measured concentration of these substances in about 300 air samples. The results showed that in 92% of the schools, indoor air mixtures belonged to the ‘low concern’ group and therefore, they did not require any further assessment. In the remaining schools, toxicity was mainly governed by a single substance, with a very small number of schools having a multiple substance mix which required a combined risk assessment. The proposed approach enables the identification of such schools and thus, aides in the efficient health risk management of pollution emissions and air quality in the school environment.

Background In a low socioeconomic status, small, rental retirement village, we have shown the older-aged managed their medicines poorly [1]. Objective As the number of participants was only 25, and the population in the rental retirement village turns over regularly; our objective was to determine whether the findings were consistent and ongoing. Methods We returned to the rental retirement villages after one and two years, and reassessed the management of medicines, using the same semi-structured interview method. Main outcome measure The main outcome measure was the perception of present and ongoing adherence. Results Although similar numbers (23-25) participated in the studies in 2011-2013, the actual participants changed with only 3 being interviewed on 3 occasions. Nevertheless, the findings over the 3 years were similar: less than 50% of the participants were adherent at the time of the study and unlikely to have problems in the next 6-12 months; only 50% had a good knowledge of their illnesses. Conclusions The management of medicines by the older-aged living in a low socioeconomic, rental retirement village is poor, and this finding is ongoing and consistent. This supports the need for extra assistance and resources for the older-aged, living in rental retirement villages, to manage their medicines.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial long-term ocular neuropathy associated with progressive loss of the visual field, retinal nerve fiber structural abnormalities and optic disc changes. Like arterial hypertension it is usually a symptomless disease, but if left untreated leads to visual disability and eventual blindness. All therapies currently used aim to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in order to minimize cell death. Drugs with new mechanisms of action could protect glaucomatous eyes against blindness. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is known to regulate systemic blood pressure and compounds acting on it are in wide clinical use in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure but not yet in ophthalmological use. There are only few previous studies concerning intraocular RAS, though evidence is accumulating that drugs antagonizing RAS can also lower IOP, the only treatable risk factor in glaucoma. The main aim of this experimental study was to clarify the expression of the renin-angiotensin system in the eye tissues and to test its potential oculohypotensive effects and mechanisms. In addition, the possible relationship between the development of hypertension and IOP was evaluated in animal models. In conclusion, a novel angiotensin receptor type (Mas), as well as ACE2 enzyme- producing agonists for Mas, were described for the first time in the eye structures participating in the regulation of IOP. In addition, a Mas receptor agonist significantly reduced even normal IOP. The effect was abolished by a specific receptor antagonist. Intraocular, local RAS would thus to be involved in the regulation of IOP, probably even more in pathological conditions such as glaucoma though there was no unambiguous relationship between arterial and ocular hypertension. The findings suggest the potential as antiglaucomatous drugs of agents which increase ACE2 activity and the formation of angiotensin (1-7), or activate Mas receptors.

The participation of aluminum in the decomposition reaction of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is enhanced if magnesium is added—either as a mixture of Al and Mg powders or as an alloy of Mg in Al. The differential thermal analyses of the compositions show a sensitization in the temperatures of decomposition, as well as increase in the heat of reaction. The AP-Mg and Ap-(Mg---Li) alloy pellets also show increased reactivity. The burning rates of AP-(Al-10% Mg) alloy pellets increase with increase in the alloy content, while calorimetric values peak at 40% alloy content. The combustion product gases of AP-40% (Al-10% Mg) alloy contain large quantities of hydrogen.
