Due to the impending shortage of qualified candidates for administrator positions, school districts are faced with the challenge of attracting and preparing candidates for the administrator role. This empirical study focused on leadership succession planning and leadership development in response to meeting the demands of the social preoccupation of accountability.

Making Non-Career Jobs Attractive to Younger Workers

As most hospitality industry managers in the U.S. are already aware, there is a growing and persistent shortage of labor available for service-sector, non-career jobs, the very jobs so vital to the industry. In most cases, recruitment efforts for these jobs are targeted toward younger workers, those under age 25. The authors explore issues regarding the attractiveness of non-career jobs in the eyes of young persons and suggest that, in addition to factors related to the job itself (pay, hours, type of work), the type of procedures used by employers to make selection decisions are equally influential. Recommendations are made concerning how hospitality employers with non-career positions to fill can maximize the chances of successfully staffing their organizations.

The hospitality industry has been facing serious labor shortages, especially in the food service area. As the proportion of younger workers shrinks, alternative sources of employees have to be sought to alleviate the labor shortage. Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities (CMBSs) introduced to the U.S. lodging industry in the early 1990’s were a panacea during a period of severe shortage of debt capital. These instruments changed commercial real estate capital markets by providing flexibility and liquidity to an otherwise illiquid investment As a relatively new form of financing to the lodging industry, the mechanics of securitization, the types of CMBS investments, and their structure are not well understood. Management Retention Factors in the School Foodservice Industry

Management retention in the school foodservice industry has been a growing concern for school district decision makers due to the large numbers of managers reaching retirement age and the shortage of qualified people to fill the positions. As with other foodservice positions, turnover rates and the shortage of service employees will continue to be challenges well into the 21st centery. The current study employed by a self-administered questionnaire and asked 101 school foodservice managers in Central Florida to rate their perceived importance of and their perceived experience with 20 employment characteristics of their job. There were significant differences in 17 of the 20 characteristics thus highlighting significant gaps between perceived importance and perceived actual experience on the job and what would keep them from changing jobs. Management and human resources implications are discussed.
