We study random walks systems on Z whose general description follows. At time zero, there is a number N >= 1 of particles at each vertex of N, all being inactive, except for those placed at the vertex one. Each active particle performs a simple random walk on Z and, up to the time it dies, it activates all inactive particles that it meets along its way. An active particle dies at the instant it reaches a certain fixed total of jumps (L >= 1) without activating any particle, so that its lifetime depends strongly on the past of the process. We investigate how the probability of survival of the process depends on L and on the jumping probabilities of the active particles.

We consider the time evolution of an exactly solvable cellular automaton with random initial conditions both in the large-scale hydrodynamic limit and on the microscopic level. This model is a version of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with sublattice parallel update and thus may serve as a model for studying traffic jams in systems of self-driven particles. We study the emergence of shocks from the microscopic dynamics of the model. In particular, we introduce shock measures whose time evolution we can compute explicitly, both in the thermodynamic limit and for open boundaries where a boundary-induced phase transition driven by the motion of a shock occurs. The motion of the shock, which results from the collective dynamics of the exclusion particles, is a random walk with an internal degree of freedom that determines the jump direction. This type of hopping dynamics is reminiscent of some transport phenomena in biological systems.

Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA B)/dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) large and cationic vesicles obtained by vortexing a lipid film in aqueous solution and above the mean phase transition temperature (T-m) are characterized by means of determination of phase behaviour, size distribution, zeta-potential analysis and colloid stability. The effect of increasing % DODAB over the 0-100% range was a nonmonotonic phase behaviour. At 50% DODAB, the mean phase transition temperature and the colloid stability were at maximum. There is an intimate relationship between stability of the bilayer structure and colloid stability. In 1, 50 and 150 mM NaCl, the colloid stability for pure DPPC or pure DODAB vesicles was very low as observed by sedimentation or flocculation, respectively. In contrast, at 50% DODAB, remarkable colloid stability was achieved in 1, 50 or 150 mM NaCl for the DODAB/DPPC composite vesicles. Vesicle size decreased but the zeta-potential remained constant with % DODAB, due to a decrease of counterion binding with vesicle size. This might be important for several biotechnological applications currently being attempted with cationic bilayer systems. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Titanium dioxide with and without the addition of neodymium ions was prepared using sol-gel and precipitation methods. The resulting catalysts were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and BET specific surface area. Neodymium addition exerted a remarkable influence on the phase transition temperature and the surface properties of the TiO(2) matrix. TiO(2) samples synthesized by precipitation exhibit an exothermic event related from the amorphous to anatase phase transition at 510 degrees C, whereas in Nd-doped TiO(2) this transition occurred at 527 degrees C. A similar effect was observed in samples obtained using sol-gel method. The photocatalytic reactivity of the catalysts was evaluated by photodegradation of Remazol Black B (RB) under ultraviolet irradiation. Nd-doped TiO(2) showed enhanced photodegradation ability compared to undoped TiO(2) samples, independent of the method of synthesis. In samples obtained by sol-gel, RB decoloration was enhanced by 16% for TiO(2) doped with 0.5% neodymium ions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single-phase perovskite structure Pb(1-x)Ba(x)TiO(3) thin films (x = 0.30, 0.50 and 0.70) were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The dielectric study reveals that the thin films undergo a diffuse type ferroelectric phase transition, which shows a broad peak. An increase of the diffusivity degree with the increasing Barium contents was observed, and it was associated to a grain decrease in the studied composition range. The temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies was used to characterize the phase transition temperatures. Raman modes persist above tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of breakdown of the local cubic symmetry by chemical disorder. The absence of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands in some interval temperature above FE-PE phase transition temperature Suggested a diffuse type phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in these thin films. The leakage Current density of the PBT thin films was studied at different temperatures and the data follow the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.75, 0.53 and 0.34 eV were obtained to the PBT70, PBT50 and PBT30 thin films, respectively. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The pair contact process - PCP is a nonequilibrium stochastic model which, like the basic contact process - CP, exhibits a phase transition to an absorbing state. While the absorbing state CP corresponds to a unique configuration (empty lattice), the PCP process infinitely many. Numerical and theoretical studies, nevertheless, indicate that the PCP belongs to the same universality class as the CP (direct percolation class), but with anomalies in the critical spreading dynamics. An infinite number of absorbing configurations arise in the PCP because all process (creation and annihilation) require a nearest-neighbor pair of particles. The diffusive pair contact process - PCPD) was proposed by Grassberger in 1982. But the interest in the problem follows its rediscovery by the Langevin description. On the basis of numerical results and renormalization group arguments, Carlon, Henkel and Schollwöck (2001), suggested that certain critical exponents in the PCPD had values similar to those of the party-conserving - PC class. On the other hand, Hinrichsen (2001), reported simulation results inconsistent with the PC class, and proposed that the PCPD belongs to a new universality class. The controversy regarding the universality of the PCPD remains unresolved. In the PCPD, a nearest-neighbor pair of particles is necessary for the process of creation and annihilation, but the particles to diffuse individually. In this work we study the PCPD with diffusion of pair, in which isolated particles cannot move; a nearest-neighbor pair diffuses as a unit. Using quasistationary simulation, we determined with good precision the critical point and critical exponents for three values of the diffusive probability: D=0.5 and D=0.1. For D=0.5: PC=0.89007(3), β/v=0.252(9), z=1.573(1), =1.10(2), m=1.1758(24). For D=0.1: PC=0.9172(1), β/v=0.252(9), z=1.579(11), =1.11(4), m=1.173(4)

The encapsulation of acid (AD) and sodium diclofenac (SD) in small unilamellar liposomes (SUV) as well as the interactions of the drug with the bilayer was studied. SUV was prepared by sonication from multilamellar liposomes containing soya phosphatidylcholine and diclofenac at various proportions. The size distribution obtained from dynamic light scattering showed that the incorporation of SD decreases significantly the size of the liposomes suggesting that the drug interacts with the bilayer of the liposomes. This size decrease is related with the phase transition of liposomes to mixed micelar solution. The encapsulation of the hydrophilic dye indocyanine green in the aqueous compartment of liposomes showed that the rate of captured dye decreases with SD concentration suggesting the transition of liposomes to mixed micelles. The P-31 NMR analysis indicates that SD interacts with the phosphate of phosphatidylcholine head groups. A schematic model for interaction of SD with phosphatidylcholine of the liposomes in which the diclofenac anion interacts with the ammonium group of the phospholipid and the dichloropheryl ring occupies a more internal site of bilayer near phosphate group was proposed. In this work we study a connection between a non-Gaussian statistics, the Kaniadakis statistics, and Complex Networks. We show that the degree distribution P(k)of a scale free-network, can be calculated using a maximization of information entropy in the context of non-gaussian statistics. As an example, a numerical analysis based on the preferential attachment growth model is discussed, as well as a numerical behavior of the Kaniadakis and Tsallis degree distribution is compared. We also analyze the diffusive epidemic process (DEP) on a regular lattice one-dimensional. The model is composed of A (healthy) and B (sick) species that independently diffusive on lattice with diffusion rates DA and DB for which the probabilistic dynamical rule A + B → 2B and B → A. This model belongs to the category of non-equilibrium systems with an absorbing state and a phase transition between active an inactive states. We investigate the critical behavior of the DEP using an auto-adaptive algorithm to find critical points: the method of automatic searching for critical points (MASCP). We compare our results with the literature and we find that the MASCP successfully finds the critical exponents 1/ѵ and 1/zѵ in all the cases DA =DB, DA DB. The simulations show that the DEP has the same critical exponents as are expected from field-theoretical arguments. Moreover, we find that, contrary to a renormalization group prediction, the system does not show a discontinuous phase transition in the regime o DA >DB.

The aim of this work is to derive theWard Identity for the low energy effective theory of a fermionic system in the presence of a hyperbolic Fermi surface coupled with a U(1) gauge field in 2+1 dimensions. These identities are important because they establish requirements for the theory to be gauge invariant. We will see that the identity associated Ward Identity (WI) of the model is not preserved at 1-loop order. This feature signalizes the presence of a quantum anomaly. In other words, a classical symmetry is broken dynamically by quantum fluctuations. Furthermore, we are considering that the system is close to a Quantum Phase Transitions and in vicinity of a Quantum Critical Point the fermionic excitations near the Fermi surface, decay through a Landau damping mechanism. All this ingredients need to be take explicitly to account and this leads us to calculate the vertex corrections as well as self energies effects, which in this way lead to one particle propagators which have a non-trivial frequency dependence

The magnetic order of bylayers composed by a ferromagnetic film (F) coupled with an antiferromagnetic film (AF) is studied. Piles of coupled monolayers describe the films and the interfilm coupling is described by an exchange interaction between the magnetic moments at the interface. The F has a cubic anisotropy while the AF has a uniaxial anisotropy. We analyze the effects of an external do magnetic field applied parallel to the interface. We consider the intralayer coupling is strong enough to keep parallel all moments of the monolayer an then they are described by one vector proportional to the magnetization of the layer. The interlayer coupling is represented by an exchange interaction between these vectors. The magnetic energy of the system is the sum of the exchange. Anisotropy and Zeeman energies and the equilibrium configuration is one that gives the absolute minimum of the total energy. The magnetization of the system is calculated and the influence of the external do field combined with the interfilm coupling and the unidirectional anisotropy is studied. Special attention is given to the region near of the transition fields. The torque equation is used to study dynamical behavior of these systems. We consider small oscillations around the equilibrium position and we negleet nonlinear terms to obtain the natural frequencies of the system. The dependence of the frequencies with the external do field and their behavior in the phase transition region is analized

A linear chain do not present phase transition at any finite temperature in a one dimensional system considering only first neighbors interaction. An example is the Ising ferromagnet in which his critical temperature lies at zero degree. Analogously, in percolation like disordered geometrical systems, the critical point is given by the critical probability equals to one. However, this situation can be drastically changed if we consider long-range bonds, replacing the probability distribution by a function like . In this kind of distribution the limit α → ∞ corresponds to the usual first neighbor bond case. In the other hand α = 0 corresponds to the well know "molecular field" situation. In this thesis we studied the behavior of Pc as a function of a to the bond percolation specially in d = 1. Our goal was to check a conjecture proposed by Tsallis in the context of his Generalized Statistics (a generalization to the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics). By this conjecture, the scaling laws that depend with the size of the system N, vary in fact with the quantitie
