UVPES studies and ab initio and DFT computations have been done on the benzene...ICl complex; electron spectral data and computed orbital energies show that donor orbitals are stabilized and acceptor orbitals are destabilized due to complexation. Calculations predict an oblique structure for the complex in which the interacting site is a C=C bond center in the donor and iodine atom in the acceptor, in full agreement with earlier experimental reports. BSSE-corrected binding energies closely match the enthalpy of complexation reported, and the NBO analysis clearly reveals the involvement of the pi orbital of benzene and the sigma* orbital of ICl in the complex.

We investigate the evolution of electronic structure with dimensionality (d) of Ni-O-Ni connectivity in divalent nickelates, NiO (3-d), La2NiO4, Pr2NiO4 (2-d), Y2BaNiO5 (1-d) and Lu2BaNi5 (0-d), by analyzing the valence band and the Ni 2p core-level photoemission spectra in conjunction with detailed many-body calculations including full multiplet interactions. Experimental results exhibit a reduction in the intensity of correlation-induced satellite features with decreasing dimensionality. The calculations based on the cluster model, but evaluating both Ni 3d and O 2p related photoemission processes on the same footing, provide a consistent description of both valence-band and core-level spectra in terms of various interaction strengths. While the correlation-induced satellite features in NiO is dominated by poorly screened d(8) states as described in the existing literature, we find that the satellite features in the nickelates with lower dimensional Ni-O-Ni connectivity are in fact dominated by the over-screened d(10)L(2) states. It is found that the changing electronic structure with the dimensionality is primarily driven by two factors: (i) a suppression of the nonlocal contribution to screening; and (ii) a systematic decrease of the charge-transfer energy Delta driven by changes in the Madelung potential. The title molecule, C21H18O8, crystallizes in two crystal polymorphs, see also Nallasivam, Nethaji, Vembu & Jaswant [Acta Cryst. (2009), E65, o314-o315]. The molecules of both polymorphs differ by the conformation of the oxomethylacetate groups. The title molecules are rather planar compared to the molecules of the other polymorph. In the title molecule, one of the oxomethylacetate groups is disordered (occupancies of 0.6058/0.3942). The structures of both polymorphs are stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Due to the planarity of the title molecules and similar intermolecular interactions, the title molecules are more densely packed than those of the other polymorph.

The title molecule, C21H18O8, crystallizes in two crystal polymorphs, see also Nallasivam, Nethaji, Vembu & Jaswant [Acta Cryst. (2009),E65, o312-o313]. The main difference between the two polymorphs is in the conformation of the oxomethylacetate groups with regard to the almost planar [total puckering amplitude 0.047 (2) angstrom] chromene ring. In the title compound, the best planes of the oxomethylacetate groups through the non-H atoms are almost perpendicular to the chromene ring [making dihedral angles of 89.61 (6) and 80.59 (5)degrees], while in the second polymorph the molecules are close to planar. Both crystal structures are stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O.

The crystal structure determination of the heptapeptide Boc-Val-Ala-Leu-Aib-Val-Ala-Phe-OMe reveals two peptide helices in the asymmetric unit, Crystal parameters are: space group P2(1), a = 10.356(2) Angstrom, b = 19.488(5) Angstrom, c = 23.756(6) Angstrom, beta = 102.25(2)degrees), V = 4685.4 Angstrom(3), Z = 4 and R = 5.7% for 7615 reflections [I>3 sigma(I)]. Both molecules adopt largely alpha-helical conformations with variations at the C-terminus, Helix type Is determined by analysing both 4-->1 and 5-->1 hydrogen-bond interactions and comparison with the results of analysis of protein structures. The presence of two 4-->1 hydrogen-bond interactions, besides four 5-->1 interact ions in both the conformations provides an opportunity to characterize bifurcated hydrogen bonds at high resolution, Comparison of the two helical conformations with related peptide structures suggests that distortions at the C-terminus are more facile than at the N-terminus.

Two series of thermotropic main chain discotic liquid crystalline polyethers, PR4m-n, based on rufigallol were prepared starting from the symmetric tetraethers of rufigallol, R4m; m and n represent the number of carbon atoms in the side chain and spacer segment, respectively. The symmetric tetraethers were in turn readily prepared by selective alkylation of rufigallol under controlled phase-transfer conditions. GPC analysis of the polymers suggested that they were all of moderate molecular weights, with M-n varying between 5400 and 17 000. The length of the spacer segment n in these polyethers was systematically varied, and its effect on the phase transition temperatures and the mesophase structure was examined using DSC, polarized light microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It is noticed that when the spacer lengths are relatively long(n greater than or equal to 2m), the isotropization temperature (TD-i) decreases as the spacer length n increases, an observation that is in accordance with those previously made. However, when the spacer lengths are relatively small (n < 2m), the dependence of TD-i is quite the opposite; TD-i actually increases with an increase in spacer length. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction studies indicate that, in the discotic columnar mesophases that are formed, the columns pack in a hexagonal manner when n greater than or equal to 2m, while they do so in a rectangular lattice when n < 2m, leading to the formation of Dh and Dr mesophases, respectively. Finally, comparison of the discotic polyethers with their low molar mass analogues confirms the role of polymerization in stabilizing the mesophase; while all the polymers exhibit columnar mesophases, some of their low molar mass analogues are not liquid crystalline.

A new ternary interstitial nitride Ni2W3N has been synthesized by the ammonolysis of different oxide precursors and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. This nitride crystallizes in the cubic space group P4(1)32(213) [Ni2W3N, a=6.663(1) Angstrom, Z=4] and is isostructural with Al2Mo3C. This compound belongs to the rare class of intermetallic ternary nitrides and carbides crystallizing with a filled beta-Mn structure. Ni2W3N is not stable, it decomposes to a new compound NiW3N related to the distorted anti-perovskite, Ca3AsN structure.

, a = 11.969(3) Angstrom, b = 12.090(6) Angstrom, c = 17.421(3) Angstrom, alpha = 108.93(2)degrees, beta = 84.42(2)degrees, gamma = 105.97(2)degrees, V = 2292(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0567, and R-w = 0.0705 for 6775 reflections with F-o > 6 sigma(F-o). The complexes have a diruthenium unit held by an oxo and two carboxylate ligands, and the imidazole ligands occupy the terminal sites of the core. The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-oxo-Ru angle in la and 2a . 3H(2)O are 3.266(1), 3.272(1) Angstrom and 122.4(4), 120.5(2)degrees, while in 4a . 1.5H(2)O these values are 3.327(1) Angstrom and 133.6(2)degrees. The diruthenium(III) complexes 1-3 are blue in color and they exhibit an intense visible band in the range 560-575 nm. The absorption is charge transfer in nature involving the Ru(III)-d pi and O-oxo-p pi orbitals. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are red in color and show an intense band near 500 nm. The diruthenium(III) core readily gets oxidized with K2S2O8 forming quantitatively the diruthenium(III,IV) complex. The visible spectral record of the conversion shows an isosbestic point at 545 nm for 1 and at 535 nm for 2 and 3. Protonation of the oxide bridge by HClO4 in methanol yields the [Ru-2(mu-OH)(mu-O2CR)(2)](3+) core. The hydroxo species shows a visible band al 550 nm. The pK(a) value for la is 2.45. The protonated species are unstable. The 1-MeIm species converts to the diruthenium(III,IV) core, while the imidazole complex converts to [Ru(ImH)(6)](3+) and some uncharacterized products. Complex [Ru(ImH)(6)](ClO4)(3) has been structurally characterized. The diruthenium(III) complexes are essentially diamagnetic and show characteristic H-1 NMR spectra indicating the presence of the dimeric structure in solution. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are paramagnetic and display rhombic EPR spectral features. Complexes 1-3 are redox active. Complex 1 shows the one-electron reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III, one-electron quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV), and two-electron quasireversible Ru-2(III)/Ru-2(II) couples near 0.4, 1.5, and -1.0 V vs SCE In MeCN-0.1 M TBAP, respectively, in the cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric studies. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit only reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III and the quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV) couples near 0.4 and 1.6 V vs SCE, respectively, The observation of a quasireversible one-step two-electron transfer reduction process in 1 is significant considering its relevance to the rapid and reversible Fe-2(III)/Fe-2(II) redox process known for the tribridged diiron core in the oxy and deoxy forms of hemerythrin.

Telomeres are the termini of linear eukaryotic chromosomes consisting of tandem repeats of DNA and proteins that bind to these repeat sequences. Telomeres ensure the complete replication of chromosome ends, impart protection to ends from nucleolytic degradation, end-to-end fusion, and guide the localization of chromosomes within the nucleus. In addition, a combination of genetic, biochemical, and molecular biological approaches have implicated key roles for telomeres in diverse cellular processes such as regulation of gene expression, cell division, cell senescence, and cancer. This review focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the organization of telomeres, telomere replication, proteins that bind telomeric DNA, and the establishment of telomere length equilibrium.

Quinones and their radical ion intermediates have been much studied by vibrational spectroscopy to understand their structure-function relationships in various biological processes. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of vibrational spectra in the structure-sensitive region of both the naphthoquinone (NQ) and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (MQ, menaquinone) radical anions using time-resolved resonance Raman and ab initio studies. Specific vibrational mode assignments have been made to all the vibrational frequencies recorded in the experiment. It is observed that the carbonyl and C-C stretching frequencies show considerable coupling in NQ and MQ radical anions. Further, the asymmetric substitution present in MQ with respect to NQ shows important signatures in the radical anion spectrum. It is concluded that assignments of vibrational frequencies of asymmetrically substituted quinones must take into consideration the influence of asymmetry on structure and reactivity.

LaCrO3 is a wide-band-gap insulator which does not evolve to a metallic state even after hole doping. We report electronic structure of this compound and its Sr substituents investigated by photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopies in conjunction with various calculations. The results show that LaCrO 3 is close to the Mott-Hubbard insulating regime with a gap of about 2.8 eV. Analysis of Cr 2p core-level spectrum suggests that the intra-atomic Coulomb interaction strength and the charge-transfer energy to be 5.0 and 5.5 eV, respectively, We also estimate the intra-atomic exchange interaction strength and a crystal-field splitting of about 0.7 and 2.0 eV, respectively. Sr substitution leading to hole doping in this system decreases the charge-excitation gap, but never collapses it to give a metallic behavior. The changes in the occupied as well as unoccupied spectral features are discussed in terms of the formation of local Cr4+ configurations arising from strong electron-phonon interactions.

Diffusion such is the integrated diffusion coefficient of the phase, the tracer diffusion coefficient of species at different temperatures and the activation energy for diffusion, are determined in V3Si phase with A15 crystal structure. The tracer diffusion coefficient of Si Was found to be negligible compared to the tracer diffusion coefficient of V. The calculated diffusion parameters will help to validate the theoretical analysis of defect structure of the phase, which plays an important role in the superconductivity.

The equilibrium geometry, electronic structure and energetic stability of Bi nanolines on clean and hydrogenated Si(001) surfaces have been examined by means of ab initio total energy calculations and scanning tunnelling microscopy. For the Bi nanolines on a clean Si surface the two most plausible structural models, the Miki or M model (Miki et al 1999 Phys. Rev. B 59 14868) and the Haiku or H model (Owen et al 2002 Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 226104), have been examined in detail. The results of the total energy calculations support the stability of the H model over the M model, in agreement with previous theoretical results. For Bi nanolines on the hydrogenated Si(001) surface, we find that an atomic configuration derived from the H model is also more stable than an atomic configuration derived from the M model. However, the energetically less stable (M) model exhibits better agreement with experimental measurements for equilibrium geometry. The electronic structures of the H and M models are very similar. Both models exhibit a semiconducting character, with the highest occupied Bi-derived bands lying at ~0.5 eV below the valence band maximum. Simulated and experimental STM images confirm that at a low negative bias the Bi lines exhibit an 'antiwire' property for both structural models.

Experimental studies of Bi heteroepitaxy on Si(001) have recently uncovered a self-organised nanoline motif which has no detectable width dispersion. The Bi lines can be grown with an aspect ratio that is greater than 350 : 1. This paper describes a study of the nanoline geometry and electronic structure using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and ab initio theoretical methods. In particular, the effect that the lines have on Si(001) surface structure at large length scales, l > 100 nm, is studied. It has been found that Bi line growth on surfaces that have regularly spaced single height steps results in a 'preferred' domain orientation.
