We report the successful deposition of CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBN) thin films on platinum coated silicon substrates by polymeric precursor method. The CBN thin films exhibited good structural, dielectric and CBN/Pt interface characteristics. The leakage current of the capacitor structure was around 0.15 A cm(-2) at an applied electric field of 30 kV cm(-1). The capacitance-voltage measurements indicated good ferroelectric polarization switching characteristics. The typical measured small signal dielectric constant and the dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 90 and 0.053, respectively. The remanent polarization and the drive voltage values were 4.2 C cm(-2) and 1.7 V at an applied voltage of 10 V. No significant fatigue was observed at least up to 10(8) switching cycles. The Pt-Ir microelectrode modified through one step, electropolymerization is proposed for the isocitrate amperometric biosensor construction. The enzyme (isocitrate dehydrogenase-ICDH), coenzyme (NADP(+)) and mediator (Meldola's Blue) were immobilized onto the microelectrode surface in one step from a PIPES buffer solution containing pyrrole. The optimized experimental conditions were 25 cycles of cyclic voltammetric in a solution containing 3.58 10(-5) mol l(-1) of mediator, 3.51 10(-4) mol l(-1) of coenzyme and 2.68 U ml(-1) of enzyme. In contrast to the biosensor for isocitrate reported in literature, just one enzyme was immobilized and no coenzyme addition in the solution of analysis was necessary. Catalytic currents were proportional to the isocitrate concentration between 7.7 10(-6) and 1.04 10(-4) mol l(-1), showing good repeatability. The detection limit of the proposed biosensor was 3.50 10(-6) mol l(-1), the response time was lower than 20 s, the lifetime was about 30 determinations and no significant interference of sugars and citric acid was verified. Orange juice samples were analysed by both methodology biosensor and spectrophotometric commercial kit, and the obtained results presented a good correlation. The data demonstrated that the developed biosensor is suitable for isocitrate determination in orange juice without matrix interferences. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The partial oxalate method, with the columbite route, associated with the Pechini method, was used to obtain a very fine ceramic powder at low temperature. Using this route it was possible to obtain a very reactive powder and to synthesize a lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powder with up to 100% of perovskite phase at a lower temperatures than the PbO melting point. The influence of the BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 seeds in the phase formation, along with time and temperature during the PMN calcination, was also investigated. The amount of 2% of BaTiO3 seeds promoted PMN powder formation with 100% of perovskite phase and a very narrow particle size distribution. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. PMN belongs to a special class of materials named relaxor ferroelectrics. It has high volumetric efficiency due to its high dielectric constant, which makes it in a perfect material for application in multilayer capacitors. When prepared the columbite route its preparation has many advantages. In this work, the preparations of columbite and PMN were done by Pechini and Partial Oxalate methods, respectively. The effects of the KNbO3 and LiNbO3 dopants added in various concentrations. The idea is founded on the correlations that they have with BaTiO3 y PbTiO3, respectively. The whole process was supervised by TG/DTA, XRD, SEM and determination of the specific surface area of the powders. LiNbO3 carries out the pre-sinterization of the particles, observed by a reduction in the surface area. There are not particle grow, but occur its lengthening. However, for KNbO3 these particle growth, but the agglomerates are softer. The effect produced by the doping during the synthesis of the PMN powder is different from the one produced in the columbite precursor. Pure precursor shows an average particle size of 0,2μm, but the addition of 5,0mol% of dopants carries out the formation of agglomerates close to 4μm. LiNbO 3 addition carries out spherical particles and pre-sinterization, while KNbO3 addition does not change the particles shape.

PMN powder samples with PbO excess of 0, 1,2 and 3% were submitted to the pressing and sintering at 1200°C for 4h with a heating rate of 3°C/min. A new sintering system, developed at our laboratories, was used. It allows obtaining more information on the sintering process. The sintered samples in the new system were compared to sintered samples in the C system. The microstructure, dielectric properties and the effect of the PbO excess in different sintering systems were compared. The N system permitted to obtain a ceramic with better properties, such density, dielectric constant and very homogeneous microstructure.

PMN ceramic relaxor has been investigated by several researchers and many aspects of this material, like powder morphology, phase decomposition, weight loss during sintering process, densification, between others, still are investigated. PMN powder preparation has been shown more efficient when synthesized by columbite route, however lead addition stage for the PMN powder synthesis remains problematical. Therefore, this work proposes a new association of methodologies, using columbite route and the hydroxide precipitation method. Through use of the powder mixture technique, which permitted to obtain good green and sintered densities, was possible to observe K+ y Li + dopants reduce weight loss in sintering process and change significantly the dielectric properties. Addition of LiNbO3 seeds in conformation stage, which react in a distinct way as a function of the particle size, promotes the formation of differenced grains in the ceramic bulk. Consequently, very different dielectrics properties from conventional PMN ceramic were obtained.

It is very important for the building of the SAW devices to study dielectric and ferroelectrics properties because every SAW device is based in piezoelectric effect that it is made up to transform an electric sign in the mechanical or acoustic sign and a mechanical or acoustic sign in an electric sign. Thus, the purpose of the present work is to prepare PbZr 0,53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) and PbTiO3 (PT) thin films on the Si (100) substrates across spin-coating using a chemical method based in polymeric precursors. After conventional treatment in the furnace, the films were characterized by impedance spectroscopy and hysteresis loops to know its dielectric and ferroelectric properties.

In this article we study the general structure and special properties of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gluon propagator constructed with the pinch technique, together with the question of how to obtain infrared finite solutions, associated with the generation of an effective gluon mass. Exploiting the known all-order correspondence between the pinch technique and the background field method, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard formulation, the non-perturbative gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost contributions. We next present a comprehensive review of several subtle issues relevant to the search of infrared finite solutions, paying particular attention to the role of the seagull graph in enforcing transversality, the necessity of introducing massless poles in the three-gluon vertex, and the incorporation of the correct renormalization group properties. In addition, we present a method for regulating the seagull-type contributions based on dimensional regularization; its applicability depends crucially on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions in the deep ultraviolet, and in particular on the anomalous dimension of the dynamically generated gluon mass. A linearized version of the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equation is derived, using a vertex that satisfies the required Ward identity and contains massless poles belonging to different Lorentz structures. The resulting integral equation is then solved numerically, the infrared and ultraviolet properties of the obtained solutions are examined in detail, and the allowed range for the effective gluon mass is determined. Various open questions and possible connections with different approaches in the literature are discussed. © SISSA 2006.

The Pt-Ru/C materials of this study were prepared by a microemulsion method with fixed water to surfactant molar ratio and heat treated at low temperatures, to avoid changes in the average particle size, in different atmospheres. All samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the mean crystallite size was estimated by using Scherrer's equation. Catalysts morphology was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Average composition was obtained by energydispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The general electrochemical behavior was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in 0.5 M sulfuric acid and the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of methanol was studied in 0.5 M methanol acid solutions by potential sweeps and chronoamperometry. Oxidation of adsorbed CO was used to estimate the electrochemical active area and to infer the surface properties. ©The Electrochemical Society.

In the present paper we investigated the effect of adsorbed PVA on Pt electrodes on classic electrochemical processes such as hydrogen UPD, oxygen reduction and CO electro-oxidation. Upon adsorption PVA blocks roughly 50% of the hydrogen sites and can not be removed from the Pt surface through cycling in the potential range of 0.05-1.0 V vs. RHE. Potentiodynamic experiments under controlled hydrodynamic conditions provided by rotating disk electrode experiments showed a negative impact of the adsorbed PVA on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Cyclic-voltammetry results revealed that not even CO was able to remove PVA from the Pt surface. Regarding the oxidation of CO, the adsorbed polymer positively shifted the CO oxidation peak potential, therefore higher potentials are required to free the Pt surface from CO poisoning. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced that the presence of PVA shifted the linearly bound CO frequency toward higher wavenumbers, a process found to be independent of the Pt surface orientation. In situ electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy results showed that PVA also impacted the electronic properties of platinum by decreasing the occupancy of the Pt conducting 5d band. Our findings clearly support the efforts toward understanding the nature of the interaction between polymers and metallic surfaces as well as the impact on technological applications (e.g. in PEMFCs). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Results are reported of a search for a deviation in the jet production cross section from the prediction of perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order. The search is conducted using a 7 TeV proton-proton data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1, collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A deviation could arise from interactions characterized by a mass scale Λ too high to be probed directly at the LHC. Such phenomena can be modeled as contact interactions. No evidence of a deviation is found. Using the CL s criterion, lower limits are set on Λ of 9.9 TeV and 14.3 TeV at 95% confidence level for models with destructive and constructive interference, respectively. Limits obtained with a Bayesian method are also reported. © 2013 CERN.

In this work, the effect of gamma radiation on the optical properties of polymetallayne poly[1,1'-bis(ethynyl)-4,4'-biphenyl(bis-tributylphosphine)Pt(II) ] (Pt-DEBP) in chloroform solution is studied. The samples were irradiated at room temperature with doses from 0.01 Gy to 1 Gy using a 60Co gamma ray source. A new band at 420 nm is observed in the emission spectra, in superposition to the emission maximum at 398 nm, linearly dependent on dose. We propose to use the ratio of the emission amplitude bands as the dosimetric parameter. This method proved to be robust, accurate, and can be used as a dosimeter in medical applications. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The sluggish kinetics of ethanol oxidation on Pt-based electrodes is one of the major drawbacks to its use as a liquid fuel in direct ethanol fuel cells, and considerable efforts have been made to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, we report an investigation on the effect of the Pt microstructure (well-dispersed versus agglomerated nanoparticles) and the catalyst support (carbon Vulcan, SnO2, and RuO2) on the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and its major adsorbed intermediate, namely, carbon monoxide. By using several structural characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, along with potentiodynamic and potentiostatic electrochemical experiments, we show that by altering both the Pt microstructure and the support, the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol can be improved up to a factor of 12 times compared to well-dispersed carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles. As a result of a combined effect, the interaction of Pt agglomerates with SnO2 yielded the highest current densities among all materials studied. The differences in the activity are discussed in terms of structural and electronic properties as well as by mass transport effects, providing valuable insights to the development of more active materials. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
