ABSTRACT: Apprenticeship is a period of increased risk of developing work-related respiratory allergic diseases. There is a need for documents to provide appropriate professional advice to young adults aiming to reduce unsuitable job choices and prevent impairment from their careers. The present document is the result of a consensus reached by a panel of experts from European and non-European countries addressed to allergologists, pneumologists, occupational physicians, primary care physicians, and other specialists interested in this field, which aims to reduce work-related respiratory allergies (rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma) among allergic or nonallergic apprentices and other young adults entering the workforce. The main objective of the document is to issue consensus suggestions for good clinical practice based on existing scientific evidence and the expertise of a panel of physicians.

Schistosomiasis control seems to be different in countries were low parasitic burden and asymptomatic clinical patients are the features of majority of cases. Immunological methods must substitute the traditional coprologic techniques used for some decades in the Control Program. Circumoval Precipitin Test (COPT), intradermal test and ELISA with soluble egg antigen (SEA) are evaluated for using as tools for seroepidemiologic studies. COPT and ELISA were performed after treatment to known their utility when impact of chemotherapy must be assessed. One hundred sixty five persons were followed up 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after treatment. The mean sensitivity of CPT studied by age groups was 95.6% which is very important considering that 88.4% of the studied population excreted less than 100 egg/gr of feces, while sensitivity of intradermal test was 58.2%. Children showed the highest ractivity to COPT. When treatment is effective, COPT reactivity progressively disminish until become negative one year later. In the non cure group, the COPT reactivity disminished but never below 20%. ELISA-SEA did not modify one year after treatment. Effort should be made to isolate fractions of eggs Schistosoma mansoni whose antibodies disappear after treatment.

Ainsi 1 Th 2/1-12, où l'apôtre présente son investissement dans la mission sous la double figure de la mère et du père. Daniel MARGUERAT montre que le vocabulaire affectif afflue dans ce texte où Paul appelle les chrétiens de Thessalonique à identifier dans leur histoire personnelle les traces de la puissance de l'évangile. Conscience collective de l'apostolat et lecture théologique des relations interpersonnelles constituent deux accents forts de ce plus ancien écrit de l'apôtre de Tarse.

Chimpanzees are being used in the study of immune response to Plasmodium falciparum malaria pre-erythrocytic stages (MPES). Responses induced by immunisation with recombinant/synthetic antigens and by irradiated sporozoites are being evaluated in a model system that is phylogenetically close to humans and that is amenable to limited manipulation not possible in humans. The value of chimpanzees for the in-depth study of immunological mechanisms at work in MPES-induced protection are discussed. A total number of 7 chimpanzees have been used to evaluate the immune response to recombinant antigens, and 5 have been challenged with large numbers of sporozoites, followed by surgical liver-wedge resection, in order to generate infected liver tissue for histological and immunological studies. As a complementary model, SCID mice carrying live, transplanted human and primate hepatocytes have been inoculated with sporozoites and infection of transplanted cells has been monitored by histological and immunological methods. In ongoing experiments chimpanzees are being immunised with MPES-derived lipopeptides that have been shown to overcome MHC restriction in mice, and with irradiated sporozoites.

AbstractBACKGROUND: KRAB-ZFPs (Krüppel-associated box domain-zinc finger proteins) are vertebrate-restricted transcriptional repressors encoded in the hundreds by the mouse and human genomes. They act via an essential cofactor, KAP1, which recruits effectors responsible for the formation of facultative heterochromatin. We have recently shown that KRAB/KAP1 can mediate long-range transcriptional repression through heterochromatin spreading, but also demonstrated that this process is at times countered by endogenous influences.METHOD: To investigate this issue further we used an ectopic KRAB-based repressor. This system allowed us to tether KRAB/KAP1 to hundreds of euchromatic sites within genes, and to record its impact on gene expression. We then correlated this KRAB/KAP1-mediated transcriptional effect to pre-existing genomic and chromatin structures to identify specific characteristics making a gene susceptible to repression.RESULTS: We found that genes that were susceptible to KRAB/KAP1-mediated silencing carried higher levels of repressive histone marks both at the promoter and over the transcribed region than genes that were insensitive. In parallel, we found a high enrichment in euchromatic marks within both the close and more distant environment of these genes.CONCLUSION: Together, these data indicate that high levels of gene activity in the genomic environment and the pre-deposition of repressive histone marks within a gene increase its susceptibility to KRAB/KAP1-mediated repression.

This book explores the perceptions of academic staff and representatives of institutional leadership about the changes in academic careers and academic work experienced in recent years. It emphasizes standardization and differentiation of academic career paths, impact of new forms of quality management on academic work, changes in recruitment, employment and working conditions, and academics' perceptions of their professional contexts. The book demonstrates a growing diversity within the academic profession and new professional roles inhabiting a space which is neither located in the core business of teaching and research nor at the top level management and leadership. The new higher education professionals tend to be important change agents within the higher education institutions not only fulfilling service and bridging functions but also streamlining academic work to make a contribution to the reputation and competitiveness of the institutions as a whole. Based on interviews with academic staff, this book explores the situation in eight European countries: Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Romania, and Switzerland.

The compound Ro-15.5458/000, derivative in the class of 9-acridanone-hydrazones, was found to be effective against Schistosoma mansoni in mice, killing almost all the skin schistosomules (24 hr after infection), when administered at the dose of 100 mg/kg. In experiments carried out with Cebus monkeys, the drug was shown to be fully effective at 25 mg/kg, 7 days after infection. These data, associated with the good results obtained earlier at the post-postural phase of schistosomiasis, allow the inference that this promising compound may be important in the set of antischistosomal drugs, depending on further toxicological and clinical tests.

BACKGROUND: The debate about a possible relationship between aerobic fitness and motor skills with cognitive development in children has recently re-emerged, because of the decrease in children's aerobic fitness and the concomitant pressure of schools to enhance cognitive performance. As the literature in young children is scarce, we examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship of aerobic fitness and motor skills with spatial working memory and attention in preschool children. METHODS: Data from 245 ethnically diverse preschool children (mean age: 5.2 (0.6) years, girls: 49.4%) analyzed at baseline and 9 months later. Assessments included aerobic fitness (20 m shuttle run) and motor skills with agility (obstacle course) and dynamic balance (balance beam). Cognitive parameters included spatial working memory (IDS) and attention (KHV-VK). All analyses were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, migration status, parental education, native language and linguistic region. Longitudinal analyses were additionally adjusted for the respective baseline value. RESULTS: In the cross-sectional analysis, aerobic fitness was associated with better attention (r=0.16, p=0.03). A shorter time in the agility test was independently associated with a better performance both in working memory (r=-0.17, p=0.01) and in attention (r=-0.20, p=0.01). In the longitudinal analyses, baseline aerobic fitness was independently related to improvements in attention (r=0.16, p=0.03), while baseline dynamic balance was associated with improvements in working memory (r=0.15, p=0.04). CONCLUSIONS: In young children, higher baseline aerobic fitness and motor skills were related to a better spatial working memory and/or attention at baseline, and to some extent also to their future improvements over the following 9 months. La finalitat d’aquest projecte ha estat la millora de la formació global dels estudiants. Concretament, mitjançant la creació d’un portafolis que contingui les diferents activitats que ha realitzat l’estudiant al llarg del curs es pretén potenciar tant les competències específiques com les competències transversals dels estudiants. Concretament, aquest objectiu s'ha assolit mitjançant el disseny i el desenvolupament de: 1. nou material docent corresponent a la presentació dels continguts de l’assignatura (apunts, presentacions, animacions,... ) amb el que s'ha pretès promoure el treball individual i la capacitat d’autoaprenentatge dels estudiants. 2. sesions dirigits que es realitzen en aules informàtiques amb el que s'ha volgut incrementar la motivació i desenvolupar un esperit crític dels estudiants 3. treballs tutelats que els estudiants realitzaran en grups, posteriorments pesentaran a la resta de companys i que finalment condueixen a la redacció d’un informe final. D'aquesta manera s'ha pretès desenvolupar les competències transversals dels estudiants

Els canvi recents en els plans d’estudis de la UPC i la UOC tenen en compte el nou espai europeu d’educació superior (EEES). Una de les conseqüències directes a aquests canvis es la necessitat d'aprofitar i optimitzar el temps dedicat a les activitats d'aprenentatge que requereixen la participació activa de l’estudiant i que es realitzen de manera continuada durant el semestre. A més, I'EEES destaca la importància de les pràctiques, les relacions interpersonals i la capacitat per treballar en equip, suggerint la reducció de classes magistrals i l’augment d’activitats que fomentin tant el treball personal de l’estudiant com el cooperatiu. En l’àmbit de la docència informàtica d’assignatures de bases de dades el problema és especialment complex degut a que els enunciats de les proves no acostumen a tenir una solució única. Nosaltres hem desenvolupat una eina anomenada LEARN-SQL, l’objectiu de la qual és corregir automàticament qualsevol tipus de sentència SQL (consultes, actualitzacions, procediments emmagatzemats, disparadors, etc.) i discernir si la resposta aportada per l’estudiant és o no és correcta amb independència de la solució concreta que aquest proposi. D’aquesta manera potenciem l’autoaprenentatge i l’autoavaluació, fent possible la semi-presencialitat supervisada i facilitant l’aprenentatge individualitzat segons les necessitats de cada estudiant. Addicionalment, aquesta eina ajuda als professors a dissenyar les proves d’avaluació, permetent també la opció de revisar qualitativament les solucions aportades pels estudiants. Per últim, el sistema proporciona ajuda als estudiants per a que aprenguin dels seus propis errors, proporcionant retroalimentació de qualitat.
