Proton spin lattice relaxation time (T-1) measurements have been carried out in methylammonium trichloro stannate(II) (CH3NH3SnCl3) as a function of temperature in the range 317-5 K at a Larmor frequency of 10 MHz. The temperature dependence of T-1 shows a phase transition around 220 K and four T-1 minima (294 K, 62 K, 32 K and 12 K). The results are discussed in terms of proton dynamics, namely, uncorrelated reorientation of NH3 and CH3 groups at high temperatures and tunnelling of NH3 and CH3 protons at low temperatures.

Investigation of the reaction of La2CuO4 with several binary metal oxides in the solid state at elevated temperatures has revealed three different reaction pathways. Reaction of La2CuO4 with strongly acidic oxides such as Re2O7, MoO3, and V2O5 follows a metathesis route, yielding a mixture of products: La3ReO8/La2MoO6/LaVO4 and CuO. Oxides such as TiO2, MnO2, and RuO2 which are not so acidic yield addition products: La2CuMO6 (M = Ti, Mn, Ru). SnO2 is a special case which appears to follow a metathesis route, giving La2Sn2O7 pyrochlore and CuO, which on prolonged reaction transform to the layered perovskite La2CuSnO6. The reaction of La2CuO4 with lower valence oxides VO2 and MoO2, on the other hand, follows a novel redox metathesis route, yielding a mixture of LaVO4/LaCuO2 and La2MoO6/Cu, respectively. This result indicates that it is the redox reactivity involving V-IV + Cu-II --> V-V + Cu-I and Mo-IV + Cu-II --> Mo-VI + Cu-0, and not the acidity of the binary oxide, that controls the nature of the products formed in these cases. The general significance of these results toward the synthesis of complex metal oxides containing several metal atoms is discussed.

A copper(II) complex containing a NSO-donor Schiff base and NN-donor 2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared and structurally characterized. The square pyramidal complex with an axial sulfur ligation is a structural model for the CUB site of dopamine-hydroxylase in its oxidized form. The copper(II) complex is catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid by dioxygen mediated by a copper(I) species which is proposed to have a four-coordinate structure with a N3S coordination geometry.

Equilibrium concentrations of various condensed and gaseous phases have been thermodynamically calculated, using the free energy minimization criterion, for the metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of copper films using bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptadionato)copper(II) as the precursor material. From among the many chemical species that may possibly result from the CVD process, only those expected on the basis of mass spectrometric analysis and chemical reasoning to be present at equilibrium, under different CVD conditions, are used in the thermodynamic calculations. The study predicts the deposition of pure, carbon-free copper in the inert atmosphere of argon as well as in the reactive hydrogen atmosphere, over a wide range of substrate temperatures and total reactor pressures. Thin films of copper, grown on SiO2/Si(100) substrates from this metalorganic precursor by low pressure CVD have been characterized by XRD and AES. The experimentally determined composition of CVD-grown copper films is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by thermodynamic analysis.

In this article, a single-phase, one-domain macroscopic model is developed for studying binary alloy solidification with moving equiaxed solid phase, along with the associated transport phenomena. In this model, issues such as thermosolutal convection, motion of solid phase relative to liquid and viscosity variations of the solid-liquid mixture with solid fraction in the mobile zone are taken into account. Using the model, the associated transport phenomena during solidification of Al-Cu alloys in a rectangular cavity are predicted. The results for temperature variation, segregation patterns, and eutectic fraction distribution are compared with data from in-house experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental results. To highlight the influence of solid phase movement on convection and final macrosegregation, the results of the current model are also compared with those obtained from the conventional solidification model with stationary solid phase. By including the independent movement of the solid phase into the fluid transport model, better predictions of macrosegregation, microstructure, and even shrinkage locations were obtained. Mechanical property prediction models based on microstructure will benefit from the improved accuracy of this model.

Copper(II) complexes Cu(satp)(L)] (1-3) of a Schiff base thiolate (salicylidene-2-aminothiophenol, H(2)satP) and phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and hypoxic photocytotoxicity studied. The redox active complexes show the Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near -0.5 V for 1 and near 0.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for 2 and 3. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (similar to 1.85 mu(B)) are avid DNA binders giving K(b) values within 1.0 x 10(5) - 8.0 x 10(5) M(-1). Thermal melting and viscosity data along with molecular docking calculations suggest DNA groove and/or partial intercalative binding of the complexes. The complexes show anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in red light under argon via type-I pathway, while DNA photocleavage in air proceeds via hydroxyl radical pathway. The DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveal a thyil radical pathway for the anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and suggest the possibility of generation of a transient copper(I) species due to bond breakage between the copper and sulfur to generate the thyil radical. An oxidation of the copper(I) species is likely by oxygen in an aerobic medium or by the buffer medium in an anaerobic condition. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC(50) = 8.3(+/- 1.0) mu M) in visible light, while showing lower dark toxicity (IC(50) = 17.2(+/- 1.0) mu M). A significant reduction in the dark toxicity is observed under hypoxic cellular conditions (IC(50) = 30.0(+/- 1.0) mu M in dark), while retaining its photocytotoxicity (IC(50) = 8.0(+/- 1.0) mu M). Although restriction enzymes are widely distributed in nature, many bacterial genera are yet to be explored for the presence of this important class of enzymes. We have purified and characterized a new type II restriction endonuclease, OfoI from a nonheterocyst cyanobacterium Oscillatoria foreaui. The recognition sequence has been determined by primer extension analysis. The purified enzyme OfoI recognizes and cleaves the palindromic hexanucleotide 5'-Cdown arrowYCGRG-3', generating 5'-protruding ends.

Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that can lead to serious cardiovascular, renal, neurologic, and retinal complications. While several drugs are currently prescribed to treat type II diabetes, their efficacy is limited by mechanism-related side effects (weight gain, hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal distress), inadequate efficacy for use as monotherapy, and the development of tolerance to the agents. Consequently, combination therapies are frequently employed to effectively regulate blood glucose levels. We have focused on the mitochondrial sodium-calcium exchanger (mNCE) as a novel target for diabetes drug discovery. We have proposed that inhibition of the mNCE can be used to regulate calcium flux across the mitochondrial membrane, thereby enhancing mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, which in turn enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in the pancreatic beta-cell. In this paper, we report the facile synthesis of benzothiazepines and derivatives by S-alkylation using 2-aminobenzhydrols. The syntheses of other bicyclic analogues based on benzothiazepine, benzothiazecine, benzodiazecine, and benzodiazepine templates are also described. These compounds have been evaluated for their inhibition of mNCE activity, and the results from the structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies are discussed.

Ternary Schiff base copper(II) complex [CuL(phen)](ClO4), where HL is 2-(methylthio)ethylsalicylaldimine and phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, has been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex shows a CuN3OS coordination in a square-pyramidal (4 + 1) geometry with the sulfur as an equatorial ligand. The complex is an avid binder to double-stranded DNA in the minor groove and exhibits both photonuclease and chemical nuclease activity. When exposed to UV light of 312 nm (96 W) or visible light of 532 nm (125 W) under aerobic conditions, the complex causes significant cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in the absence of any externally added reducing agent or H2O2.

A dynamic model of the COREX melter gasifier is developed to study the transient behavior of the furnace. The effect of pulse disturbance and step disturbance on the process performance has been studied. This study shows that the effect of pulse disturbance decays asymptotically. The step change brings the system to a new steady state after a delay of about 5 hours. The dynamic behavior of the melter gasifier with respect to a shutdown/blow-on condition and the effect of tapping are also studied. The results show that the time response of the melter gasifier is much less than that of a blast furnace.

Six ternary copper(II) complexes of general formulation [CuLB] (1-6), where L is dianionic ONS-donor thiosemicarbazones derived from the condensation of salicylaldehyde with thiosemicarbazides and B is NN-donor heterocyclic bases like 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, are prepared from a reaction of copper(II) acetate hydrate with the heterocyclic base (B) and the thiosemicarbazone (H2L) in MeOH, and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction technique. Crystal structures of the complexes display a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) coordination geometry having the ONS-donor thiosemicarbazone bonded at the basal plane. The chelating heterocyclic bases exhibit axial-equatorial mode of bonding. The complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and they show axial X-band EPR spectra in DMF-toluene glass at 77 K giving g(parallel to)(A(parallel to)) and g(perpendicular to) values of similar to2.2 (175 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) and similar to2.0 indicating a {d(x2-y2)}(1) ground state. The complexes show a d-d band near 570 nm and a charge transfer band near 400 nm in DMF. The complexes are redox active and exhibit a quasireversible Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate near 0.1 V vs. SCE. They are catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid in presence of dioxygen. The complexes with a CuN3OS coordination model the ascorbate oxidation property of dopamine beta-hydroxylase and peptidylglycine a-hydroxylating monooxygeanase. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. A series of new dicationic dihydrogen complexes of ruthenium of the type cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(L)][BF4](2) (dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2; L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), PF((OPr)-Pr-i)(2)) have been prepared by protonating the precursor hydride complexes cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] (L = P(OMe)(3), P(OEt)(3), P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3)) using HBF4.Et2O. The cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(L)][BF4] complexes were obtained from the trans hydrides via an isomerization reaction that is acid-accelerated. This isomerization reaction gives mixtures of cis and trans hydride complexes, the ratios of which depend on the cone angles of the phosphite ligands: the greater the cone angle, the greater is the amount of the cis isomer. The eta(2)-H-2 ligand in the dihydrogen complexes is labile, and the loss of H-2 was found to be reversible. The protonation reactions of the starting hydrides with trans PMe3 or PMe2Ph yield mixtures of the cis and the trans hydride complexes; further addition of the acid, however, give trans-[(dPPM)(2)Ru(BF4)Cl]. The roles of the bite angles of the dppm ligand as well as the steric and the electronic properties of the monodentate phosphorus ligands in this series of complexes are discussed. X-ray crystal structures of trans-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru-(H)(P(OMe)(3))][BF4], and cis-[(dppm)(2)Ru(H)(P((OPr)-Pr-i)(3))][BF4] complexes have been determined.
