Wide transmission dips are observed in the through spectra in microring and racetrack channel drop filters by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The transmission spectra, which reflect the coupling efficiency, are also calculated from the FDTD output as the pulse just travels one circle inside the resonator. The results indicate that the dips are caused by the dispersion of the coupling coefficient between the input waveguide and the resonator. In addition, a near-zero channel drop on resonance and a large channel drop off resonance are observed due to the near zero coupling coefficient and a large coupling coefficient, respectively. If the width of the input waveguide is different from that of the ring resonator, the oscillation of the coupling coefficient can be greatly suppressed.

We present the fabrication process and experimental results of 850-nm oxide-confined vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) fabricated by using dielectric-free approach. The threshold current of 0.4 mA, which corresponds to the threshold current density of 0.5 kA/cm(2), differential resistance of 76 Omega, and maximum output power of more than 5 mW are achieved for the dielectric-free VCSEL with a square oxide aperture size of 9 mu m at room temperature (RT). L-I-V characteristics of the dielectric-free VCSEL are compared with those of conventional VCSEL with the similar aperture size, which indicates the way to realize low-cost, low-power consumption VCSELs with extremely simple process. Preliminary study of the temperature-dependent L-I characteristics and modulation response of the dielectric-free VCSEL are also presented.

We demonstrate a novel oxide confined GaAs-based photonic crystal vertical cavity surface emitting laser (PC-VCSEL) operating at a wavelength of 850 nm based on coherent coupling. A ring-shaped light-emitting aperture is added to the conventional PC-VCSEL, and coherent coupling is achieved between the central defect aperture and the ring-shaped light-emitting aperture. Measurements show that under the continuous-wave (CW) injected current of 20 mA, a high power of 2 mW is obtained, and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is larger than 20 dB. The average divergence angle is 4.2 degrees at the current level of 20 mA. Compared with the results ever reported, the divergence angle is reduced.

The simulation of a plasmonic very-small-aperture laser is demonstrated in this paper. It is an integration of the surface plasmon structure and very-small-aperture laser (VSAL). The numerical results demonstrate that the transmission field can be confined to a spot with subwavelength width in the far field (3.5 mu m far from the emitting surface), and the output power density can be enhanced over 30 times of the normal VSAL. Such a device can be useful in the application of a high resolution far-field scanning optical microscope.

The self-heating effect in 1.3 mu m p-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) has been investigated using a self-consistent theoretical model. Good agreement is obtained between theoretical analysis and experimental results under pulsed operation. The results show that in p-doped QD VCSELs, the output power is significantly influenced by self-heating. About 60% of output power is limited by self-heating in a device with oxide aperture of 5x6 mu m(2). This value reduces to 55% and 48%, respectively, as the oxide aperture increases to 7x8 and 15x15 mu m(2). The temperature increase in the active region and injection efficiency of the QDs are calculated and discussed based on the different oxide aperture areas and duty cycle.

A radially polarized beam focused by a high-numerical-aperture (NA) objective has a strong longitudinal and nonpropagating electric field in the focal region, which implies that it is suitable for axial optical trapping. In this paper, we use the vectorial diffraction integral to represent the field distribution of the radially polarized beam focused by a high-NA objective and then employ the T-matrix method to compute the radiation forces on spherical particles. Effects of different parameters, such as the size of the sphere, the inner radius of the radially polarized beam, and the NA of the objective, on the radiation forces are presented.

The robustness and prolongation of multiple filamentation (MF) for femtosecond laser propagation in air are investigated experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the number, pattern, propagation distance, and spatial stability of MF can be controlled by a variable-aperture on-axis pinhole. The random MF pattern can be optimized to a deterministic pattern. In our numerical simulations, we configured double filaments to principlly simulate the experimental MF interactions. It is experimentally and numerically demonstrated that the pinhole can reduce the modulational instability of MF and is favorable for a more stable MF evolution. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Azimuthally polarized beams, focused by a high-numerical-aperture (NA) objective lens, form a hollow intensity distribution near the focus, which is appropriate for trapping low-refractive-index particles, in contrast to common linearly polarized or radially polarized beams. In this paper, the field distribution of the azimuthally polarized beam focused by a high-NA objective is described by the vectorial diffraction integral, and then the radiation forces on spherical particles with different parameters such as radius and refractive index are calculated by the T-matrix method. Numerical results show that the azimuthally polarized beam not only can steadily trap low-refractive-index particles at the focus center but also can trap multiple high-refractive-index particles around the focus center by virtue of the hollow-ring configuration. The range of the sizes of low-refractive-index particles that can be trapped steadily are presented, corresponding to different parameters such as the NA of the objective and the relative refractive index, based on which the NA of the objective can be selected to trap the appropriate size of particles. Based on Fresnel-Mrchhoff diffraction theory, a diffraction model of nonlinear optical media interacting with a Gaussian beam has been set up that can interpret the Z-scan phenomenon in a new way. This theory not only is consistent with the conventional Z-scan theory for a small nonlinear phase shift but also can be used for larger nonlinear phase shifts. Numerical computations indicate that the shape of the Z-scan curve is greatly affected by the value of the nonlinear phase shift. The symmetric dispersionlike Z-scan curve is valid only for small nonlinear p base shifts (\Deltaphi(0)\ < pi), but, with increasingly larger nonlinear phase shifts, the valley of the transmittance is severely suppressed and the peak is greatly enhanced. The power output through the aperture will oscillate with increasing nonlinear phase shift caused by the input laser power. The aperture transmittance will attenuate and saturate with increasing Kerr constant. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

A novel type of interferometer, the moving-mirror-pair interferometer, is presented, and its principle and properties are studied. The new interferometer is built with three flat mirrors, which include two flat moving mirrors fixed as a single moving part by a rigid structure and one flat fixed mirror. The optical path difference (OPD) is obtained by the straight reciprocating motion of the double moving mirror, and the OPD value is four times the physical shift value of the double moving mirror. The tilt tolerance of the double moving mirror of the novel interferometer is systematically analyzed by means of modulation depth and phase error. Where the square aperture is concerned, the formulas of the tilt tolerance were derived. Due to the novel interferometer's large OPD value and low cost, it is very applicable to the high-spectral-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometers for any wavenumber region from the far infrared to the ultraviolet. We have determined the far-field patterns and beam parameters of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with different structures. The results show that the window diameter and the active-layer aperture of VCSELs strongly influence laser far-field distributions and beam characteristics; for VCSELs with small window omega=5 mu m, only one dominant lobe has been observed in the far-field profiles, even though injected current was increased up to 2 Ith; and the smaller the ratio of the window diameter to the active-layer aperture, the larger is the far-field divergence. The laser structure dependence of the K factor has also been studied. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

A 1.3μm low-threshold edge-emitting AlGaInAs multiple-quantum-well(MQW) laser with AlInAs-oxide confinement layers is fabricated. The Al-contained waveguide layers upper and low the active layers are oxidized as current-confined layers using wet-oxidation technique. This structure provides excellent current and optical confinement, resulting in 12.9mA of a low continuous wave threshold current and 0.47W/A of a high slope efficiency of per facet at room temperature for a 5-μm-wide current aperture.Compared with the ridge waveguide laser with the same-width ridge, the threshold current of the AlInAs-oxide confinement laser has decreased by 31.7% and the slope efficiency has increased a little. Both low threshold and high slope efficiency indicate that lateral current confinement can be realized by oxidizing AlInAs waveguide layers. The full width of half maximum angles of the Al-InAs-oxide confinement laser are 21.6° for the horizontal and 36.1° for the vertical, which demonstrate the ability of the AlInAs oxide in preventing the optical field from spreading laterally.
