Background. Today modern day slavery is known as human trafficking and is a growing pandemic that is a grave human rights violation. Estimates suggest that 12.3 million people are working under conditions of force, fraud or coercion. Working toward eradication is a worthy effort; it would free millions of humans from slavery, mostly women and children, as well as uphold basic human rights. One tactic to eradicating human trafficking is to increase identification of victims among those likely to encounter victims of human trafficking.^ Purpose. This study aims to develop an intervention that improves certain stakeholders' ability, in the health clinic setting, to appropriately identify and report victims of human trafficking to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.^ Methods. The Intervention Mapping (IM) process was used by program planners to develop an intervention for health professionals. This methodology is a six step process that guides program planners to develop an intervention. Each step builds on the others through the execution of a needs assessment, and the development of matrices based on performance objectives and determinants of the targeted health behavior. The end product results in an ecological, theoretical, and evidence based intervention.^ Discussion. The IM process served as a useful protocol for program planners to take an ecological approach as well as incorporate theory and evidence into the intervention. Consultation with key informants, the planning group, adopters, implementers, and individuals responsible for institutionalization also contributed to the practicality and feasibility of the intervention. Program planners believe that this intervention fully meets recommendations set forth in the literature.^ Conclusions. The intervention mapping methodology enabled program planners to develop an intervention that is appropriate and acceptable to the implementer and the recipients.^

To answer the question whether increased energy demand resulting from myocyte hypertrophy and enhanced $\beta$-myosin heavy chain mRNA, contractile protein synthesis and assembly leads to mitochondrial proliferation and differentiation, we set up an electrical stimulation model of cultured neonatal rat cardiac myocytes. We describe, as a result of increased contractile activity, increased mitochondrial profiles, cytochrome oxidase mRNA, and activity, as well as a switch in mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I (CPT-I) from the liver to muscle isoform. We investigate physiological pathways that lead to accumulation of gene transcripts for nuclear encoded mitochondrial proteins in the heart. Cardiomyocytes were stimulated for varying times up to 72 hr in serum-free culture. The mRNA contents for genes associated with transcriptional activation (c-fos, c-jun, junB, nuclear respiratory factor 1 (Nrf-1)), mitochondrial proliferation (cytochrome c (Cyt c), cytochrome oxidase), and mitochondrial differentiation (carnitine palmitonyltransferase I (CPT-I) isoforms) were measured. The results establish a temporal pattern of mRNA induction beginning with c-fos (0.25-3 hr) and followed by c-jun (0.5-3 hr), junB (0.5-6 hr), NRF-1 (1-12 hr), Cyt c (12-72 hr), cytochrome c oxidase (12-72 hr). Induction of the latter was accompanied by a marked decrease in the liver-specific CPT-I mRNA. Electrical stimulation increased c-fos, $\beta$-myosin heavy chain, and Cyt c promoter activities. These increases coincided with a rise in their respective endogenous gene transcripts. NRF-1, cAMP response element (CRE), and Sp-1 site mutations within the Cyt c promoter reduced luciferase expression in both stimulated and nonstimulated myocytes. Mutations in the Nrf-1 and CRE sites inhibited the induction by electrical stimulation or by transfection of c-jun into non-paced cardiac myocytes whereas mutation of the Sp-1 site maintained or increased the fold induction. This is consistent with the appearance of NRF-1 and fos/jun mRNAs prior to that of Cyt c. Overexpression of c-jun by transfection also activates the Nrf-1 and Cyt c mRNA sequentially. Electrical stimulation of cardiac myocytes activates the c-Jun-N-terminal kinase so that the fold-activation of the cyt c promoter is increased by pacing when either c-jun or c-fos/c-jun are cotransfected. We have identified physical association of Nrf-1 protein with the Nrf-1 enhancer element and of c-Jun with the CRE binding sites on the Cyt c promoter. This is the first demonstration that induction of Nrf-1 and c-Jun by pacing of cardiac myocytes directly mediates Cyt c gene expression and mitochondrial proliferation in response to hypertrophic stimuli in the heart.^ Subsequent to gene activation pathways that lead to mitochondrial proliferation, we observed an isoform switch in CPT-I from the liver to muscle mRNA. We have found that the half-life for the muscle CPT-I is not affected by electrical stimulation, but electrical decrease the T1/2 in the liver CPT-I by greater than 50%. This suggests that the liver CPT-I switch to muscle isoform is due to (1) a decrease in T1/2 of liver CPT-I and (2) activation of muscle CPT-Itranscripts by electrical stimulation. Regulation of uterine quiescence involves the integration of the signaling pathways regulating uterine contraction and relaxation. Uterine contractants increase intracellular calcium through receptor/GαqPLC coupling, resulting in contraction of the myometrium. Elevation of cAMP concentration has been correlated with relaxation of the myometrium. However, the mechanism of cAMP action in the uterus is unclear. ^ Both endogenous and exogenous increases in cAMP inhibited oxytocin-stimulated phosphatidylinositide turnover in an immortalized pregnant human myometrial cell line (PHM1-41). This inhibition was reversed by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) inhibitors, suggesting the involvement of PKA. cAMP inhibited phosphatidyinositide turnover stimulated by different agonists in different cell lines. These data suggest that the cAMP inhibitory mechanism is neither cell nor receptor dependent, and inhibits Gαq/PLCβ1 and PLCβ3 coupling. ^ The subcellular localization of PKA occurs via PKA binding to A-Kinase-Anchoring-Proteins (AKAP), and peptides that inhibit this association have been developed (S-Ht31). S-Ht31 blocked cAMP-stimulated PKA activity and decreased PKA concentration in PHM1-41 cell plasma membranes. S-Ht31 reversed the ability of CPT-cAMP, forskolin and relaxin to inhibit phosphatidylinositide turnover in PHM1-41 cells. Overlay analysis of both PHM1-41 cell and nonpregnant rat myometrium found an AKAPs of 86 kDa and 150 kDa associated with the plasma membrane, respectively. These data suggest that PKA anchored to the plasma membrane via AKAP150/PKA anchoring is involved in the cAMP inhibitory mechanism. ^ CPT-cAMP and isoproterenol inhibited phosphatidylinositide turnover in rat myometrium from days 12 through 20 of gestation. In contrast, neither agent was effective in the 21 day pregnant rat myometrium. The decrease in the cAMP inhibitory mechanism was correlated with a decrease in PKA and an increase in protein phosphatase 2B (PP2B) concentration in rat myometrial plasma membranes on day 21 of gestation. In myometrial total cell homogenates, both PKA and PP2B concentration increased on day 21. S-Ht31 inhibited cAMP inhibition of phosphatidylinositide turnover in day 19 pregnant rat myometrium. Both PKA and PP2B coimmunoprecipitated with an AKAP150 in a gestational dependent manner, suggesting this AKAP localizes PKA and PP2B to the plasma membrane. ^ These data presented demonstrate the importance of the cAMP inhibitory mechanism in regulating uterine contractility. ^

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. One manifestation of CVD known to increase mortality is an enlarged, or hypertrophic heart. Hypertrophic cardiomyocytes adapt to increased contractile demand at the genetic level with a re-emergence of the fetal gene program and a downregulation of fatty acid oxidation genes with concomitant increased reliance on glucose-based metabolism. To understand the transcriptional regulatory pathways that implement hypertrophic directives we analyzed the upstream promoter region of the muscle specific isoform of the nuclear-encoded mitochondrial gene, carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1β (CPT-1β) in cultured rat neonatal cardiac myocytes. This enzyme catalyzes the rate-limiting step of fatty acid entry into β-oxidation and is downregulated in cardiac hypertrophy and failure, making it an attractive model for the study of hypertrophic gene regulation and metabolic adaptations. We demonstrate that the muscle-enriched transcription factors GATA-4 and SRF synergistically activate CPT-1β; moreover, DNA binding to cognate sites and intact protein structure are required. This mechanism coordinates upregulation of energy generating processes with activation of the energy consuming contractile promoter for cardiac α-actin. We hypothesized that fatty acid or glucose responsive transcription factors may also regulate CPT-1β. Oleate weakly stimulates CPT-1β activity; in contrast, the glucose responsive Upstream Stimulatory Factors (USF) dramatically depresses the CPT-1β reporter. USF regulates CPT-1β through a novel physical interaction with the cofactor PGC-1 and abrogation of MEF2A/PGC-1 synergistic stimulation. In this way, USF can inversely regulate metabolic gene programs and may play a role in the shift of metabolic substrate preference seen in hypertrophy. Failing hearts have elevated expression of the nuclear hormone receptor COUP-TF. We report that COUP-TF significantly suppresses reporter transcription independent of DNA binding and specific interactions with GATA-4, Nkx2.5 or USF. In summary, CPT-1β transcriptional regulation integrates mitochondrial gene expression with two essential cardiac functions: contraction and metabolic substrate oxidation. ^

Sedimentary rocks of Barremian through early Maestrichtian age recovered on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 61 had their principal source in the complex of igneous rocks with which they are interlayered in the Nauru Basin. Relict textures and primary sedimentary structures show these Cretaceous sediments to be of hyaloclastic origin, in part reworked and redeposited by slumps and currents. The dominant composition now is smectite, but locally iron, titanium, and manganese oxides, plagioclase, pyroxene, analcime, clinoptilolite, chalcedonic quartz, cristobalite, amphibole, nontronite, celadonite, and pyrite are also present. The mineral assemblages and the geochemistry reflect the original basaltic composition and its subsequent alteration by one or more processes of submarine weathering, authigenesis, hydrothermal circulation, and contact metamorphism. Hyaloclastitic sandstone, siltstone, and breccia within the sheet flows below 729 meters sub-bottom depth have Barremian fossils, thus establishing the age of the lower, or extrusive, complex of post-ridge-crest volcanism. Similar hyaloclastites between 564 and 729 meters are invaded by hypabyssal sills of the upper igneous complex, and fossil ages of Albian or Cenomanian set an older limit to the age of that second post-ridge-crest episode. Cenomanian to early Campanian sedimentary rocks between 490 and 564 meters have a substantial contribution of clays of submarine-weathered-basalt origin, as well as hydrothermal and pelagic components. The interval of reworked hyaloclastitic siltstone, sandstone, and breccias between 450 and 490 meters is of late Campanian and early Maestrichtian age. These sediments probably formed from glassy basalt that fragmented upon eruption nearby, when sills were being emplaced. In addition to pelagic elements, these Upper Cretaceous volcanogenic sediments include redeposited material of shallow-water origin, apparently derived from the Marshall Islands.

Small glassy spheres, ellipsoids, teardrops, cylinders and dumbbells occur in large numbers in Tertiary deep sea clays cored in the northeastern Pacific by the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These objects morphologically resemble microtektites, but have the composition of an oceanic tholeiite. On the basis of their composition and stratigraphic relationship it is considered that they are of volcanic origin and most likely have been formed in deep water by submarine volcanic processes.

Insoluble residues of Late Cretaceous to Quaternary deep-sea samples from slope, trench, and oceanic plate sites south of Guatemala were examined, specifically for the distribution of clay minerals in the <2-µm fraction and of silt grains in the 20-63-µm fraction. Widespread "oceanic" particles (biogenic opal, rhyolitic glass) and their diagenetic products (smectite, clinoptilolite, heulandite) were distinguished from terrigenous material - illite, kaolinite, chlorite, plagioclase, quartz, and heavy minerals. The main results of this investigation are: (1) At Site 494 on the slope immediately adjacent to the trench, terrigenous supplies testify to a slope position of the whole sequence back to the Late Cretaceous. (2) At Site 495 on the Pacific Cocos Plate, "oceanic" and terrigenous sedimentation are clearly separated. Whereas the pelagic sedimentation prevailed in the early Miocene, terrigenous minerals appeared in the middle Miocene in the clay fraction, and in the early Pliocene in the coarse silt fraction. These terrigenous supplies are interpreted as having been transported by suspension clouds crossing the slope and even the trench. The alternative, however, an eolian transport, cannot be excluded.

Sediments recovered by drilling during Legs 58, 59, and 60 in the North and South Philippine Sea have been analyzed by X-ray diffractometry. The CaCO3 content was measured separately. The sites encompass several volcanic ridges and intervening inter-arc basin troughs as well as sites on the Mariana arc fore-arc sediment prism and the Mariana Trench. The sediments at all sites received major volcanogenic input from the various arcs; they tend to be rich in volcanic glass, with associated quartz, feldspar, pyroxenes and amphibole. Carbonate is a major component only at Site 445 at the southern end of the Daito Ridge, and at Site 448 on the Palau-Kyushu Ridge. All other sites were either deep relative to the carbonate compensation depth or had very high non-carbonate sedimentation rates. Clay minerals are mainly smectite and illite with lesser variable proportions of chlorite and kaolinite. Smectite predominates over illite except at sites in the Shikoku Basin and the Daito Ridge, and at one site in the Mariana Trench. At several sites, smectite increases and illite decreases with depth. Principal zeolites are phillipsite and clinoptilolite. Analcime occurs in some samples.

Santiago del Estero ocupa a diario los noticieros por los asuntos de desalojos de campesinos. Con el récord nacional de explotaciones sin límites definidos, la provincia vuelve a ser la protagonista de un conflicto de tierra agresivo. La marginalidad territorial de los pequeños productores sin título de propiedad, junto a la expansión sojera sobre tierras semiáridas, vuelven a actualizar los problemas ligados a la “anarquía territorial" de la provincia. Desde 1990, con la creación del MOCASE, la identidad campesina tiene voz, hasta entonces olvidada. Pero el silencio político y de la opinión pública promovió una crisis del movimiento y un empeoramiento del malestar rural frente a la violencia de las expulsiones. La violación territorial va acompañada entonces de un desorden social y viceversa. Este artículo pretende explicar las causas del problema de las explotaciones ilegales, pero legítimas.

La justicia penal adolescente es un sistema de administración judicial que extiende los derechos y garantías del debido proceso a los adolescentes a quienes se acuse de haber participado en la comisión de una infracción a la ley penal. Se podría decir que las finalidades de la justicia penal juvenil, por orden de importancia son: Administrar justicia de forma democrática. Fomentando la responsabilización del adolescente que ha cometido una infracción penal; promoviendo su integración social y favoreciendo la participación de la comunidad en el proceso de reinserción social, mediante la oferta de servicios y programas para el cumplimiento de medidas socio-educativas. Cabe preguntarse ¿Las instituciones correccionales son coadyuvantes en la reinserción de los jóvenes en conflicto con la ley de tal modo que no vuelvan a confrontar con el orden jurídico vigente cuando egresen? La respuesta es muy compleja porque si bien desde la situación de las instituciones el aislamiento que sufre el joven no les da defensas para poder cambiar sus circunstancias de vida a la hora de reingresar a la sociedad y esto lleva a una alta probabilidad de volver a delinquir. Sin embargo las Ciencias Sociales plantean otras alternativa para logran la inserción de los jóvenes, una de ellas, se inclina a la estimulación de la resiliencia. Esta implica: sobreponerse a las dificultades y tener éxito a pesar de estar expuestos a situaciones de alto riesgo; mantener la competencia bajo presión, esto significa adaptarse con éxito y recuperarse de un trauma ajustándose de forma exitosa a los acontecimientos negativos de la vida.

The complete Paleocene section begins with the basal Tertiary Globigerina eugubina Zone. This zone occurs at 465A-3-3, 4 cm to 465A-3-3, 144 cm and belongs to Lithologic Unit I (Site 465 report, this volume), a homogeneous, white, moderately to highly disturbed nannofossil ooze.

X-ray powder diffraction and optical and scanning-electron microscope analyses of sediment samples taken from four sites drilled in the Goban Spur area of the northeast Atlantic show variable diagenetic silicification of sediments at several stratigraphic horizons. The results are as follows: 1. The silicified sediments are middle Eocene at Site 548, Paleocene to lower Albian at Site 549, upper to lower Paleocene at Site 550, and lower Turanian at Site 551. 2. There are three types of these silicified sediments: nodular type in carbonate-rich host sediments, bedded type in clayey host sediments, and a type transitional between the other two. 3. Silica diagenesis is considered to progress as follows: dissolution of siliceous fossils; precipitation of opal CT in pore spaces and transformation of biogenic silica (opal A) to opal CT, development of opal CT cement; chalcedonic quartz precipitation in pore spaces and replacement of foraminiferal tests by chalcedonic quartz; and finally, transformation of opal CT to quartz, and cementation. But the strong influence of host-sediment types on diagenetic silica fades is recognized. Bedded-type silicified sediments in a clayey environment indicate a lower grade of silica diagenesis. Only very weak chalcedonic quartz formation is recognized, and there is no opal CT cementation, even in Lower Cretaceous bedded-type clayey silicified sediments. 4. The rf(101) spacing of opal CT shows two distinct trends of ordering or decrease with burial depth; one is a rapid change, in the case of nodular silicified sediments, and the other is a more gentle shift, found in bedded silicified sediments. 5. Diagenetic silica facies of the nodular type develop as irregular concentric zones around some nodule nuclei. Also, quartz-chert nodule formation occurs at rather shallower horizons, and is discordant with the trend of decreasing d(101) spacing in opal CT. 6. Silicified sediments at Site 551 are shallower than at the other sites. The diagenetic silica facies suggest the probable erosion of 300 m or more of sediment at this site. 7. The zeolites clinoptilolite and phillipsite were found in the sediment samples recovered on Leg 80. Clinoptilolite occurs from the shallower levels to the deepest horizons of diagenetically silicified zones, suggesting that clinoptilolite formation is related to diagenesis of biogenic silica. Phillipsite at Site 551 (Section 551-5-2) may originate from volcanogenie material.

Mineral assemblages of DSDP Holes 436 and 438A and the upper section of Hole 439 (871.5-911.0 m sub-bottom) resemble each other and are composed of montmorillonite (probably a small portion of montmorillonite/illite mixed-layer clays), illite, chlorite, kaolinite, quartz, plagioclase, hornblende, calcite, dolomite, siderite, gypsum, pyrite, and halite. In the middle section of Hole 439 (933.5-1041.0 m), clinoptilolite is also found. In the lower section of Hole 439 (1077.5-1150.0 m), montmorillonite is not confirmed, and clinoptilolite and mixed-layer illite are found. These assemblages, which also contain detrital kaolinite, are generally found in sediments from brackish-water environments. At Site 439, more than 1000 meters of sediment might have been removed by erosion at the base.

A bulk-sediment and clay-fraction X-ray diffraction study of samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 60 shows an abundance of the following minerals: plagioclase feldspar, zeolite, smectite, Fe-Mg chlorite, attapulgite, and serpentine. Amorphous compounds are also abundant. The variations in abundance of the different components correspond to episodes of volcanic activity through time. Deposits from periods of great activity are composed of sediments very rich in amorphous matter and in "primary" minerals (e.g., plagioclase feldspars). During relatively quiet periods, clay minerals and zeolites predominate.

La presente tesis tiene como propósito central estudiar las visiones de sí de jóvenes mujeres con discapacidad incluidas en procesos de escolarización en escuelas públicas del sistema de educación tanto común como especial de la ciudad de La Plata y el Gran La Plata, provincia de Buenos Aires. La relevancia de la temática propuesta radica en que, en los estudios de juventud y género así como en los referidos al campo escolar, se observan escasas investigaciones sobre las mujeres con discapacidad. Desde una perspectiva socio-antropológica y a través de un enfoque etnográfico, se intenta comprender e interpretar las visiones de sí de las jóvenes con discapacidad en la trama de sus narrativas autobiográficas. Las estrategias metodológicas están orientadas a registrar la situación vivida por integrantes de este grupo social específico, focalizando en las relaciones entre el contexto social y cultural de pertenencia, el sexo género y la escolarización de las mujeres. El estudio realizado ha identificado que las jóvenes mujeres con discapacidad constituyen una de las poblaciones menos escolarizadas y más vulneradas en sus derechos. Asimismo, ha sido posible registrar que las visiones discapacitantes e inferiorizantes de las jóvenes están vinculadas a sus experiencias en la vida escolar, signada por rupturas, exclusiones, discontinuidades y violaciones a múltiples derechos, incluido el derecho a la educación. Se observa así la forma en que las instituciones y el sistema educativo no hacen efectivo el reconocimiento de las jóvenes mujeres con discapacidad como sujetas de derecho, prevista en la Convención sobre los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad, de jerarquía constitucional en la Argentina
