Tin oxide nanoparticles prepared by an aqueous sol-gel method were deposited by dip-coating on fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53%ZrF4-20%BaF2-4%LaF3-3%AlF3-20%NaF) to improve its resistance against wet corrosion. The aqueous leaching of uncoated and SnO2-coated fluorozirconate glass was studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and it was shown that even an ultra thin tin dioxide film provides good protection of the glass surface against the bulk propagation of the hydrolytic attack.

The influence of the substrate temperature on the structural features and opto-electrical properties of undoped and indium-doped ZnO thin films deposited by pyrosol process was investigated. The addition of indium induces a drastic decrease (by a factor approximate to 10(10) for samples deposited at 300 degreesC) in the electrical resistivity of films, the lowest electrical resistivity (6 mOmega-cm) being observed for the film deposited at 450 degreesC. Films are highly transparent (>80%) in the Vis-NIR ranges, and the optical band gap exhibits a blue shift (from 3.29 to 3.33 eV) for the In-doped films deposited at increasing temperature. Preferential orientation of the ZnO crystallites with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface and an anisotropic morphology of the nanoporous structure was observed for films growth at 300 and 350 degreesC. The nature of intense visible photoluminescence at room temperature of SrWO4 (SWO) non-crystalline thin films is discussed in the light of experimental results and theoretical calculations. The SWO thin films were synthesized by the polymeric precursors method. Their structural properties have been obtained by X-ray diffraction data and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) spectra have been measured. The UV-vis optical spectra measurements suggest the creation of localized states in the disordered structure. The photoluminescence measurements reveal that the PL changes with the degree of disorder in the SWO thin film. To understand the origin of visible PL at room temperature in disordered SWO, we performed quantum-mechanical calculations on crystalline and disordered SWO periodic models. Their electronic structures are analyzed in terms of DOS, hand dispersion and charge densities. We used DFT method with the hybrid non-local B3LYP approximation. The polarization induced by the symmetry break and the existence of localized levels favors the creation of trapped holes and electrons, giving origin to the room temperature photoluminescence phenomenon in the SWO thin films. Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (PZT) thin films were prepared with success by the polymeric precursor method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the formation of the PZT perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the film showed good crystallinity and no presence of secondary phases was identified. This indicates that the PZT thin films were crystallized in a single phase. PZT thin films showed a well-developed dense grain structure with uniform distribution, without the presence of rosette structure. The Raman spectra undoubtedly revealed these thin films in the tetragonal phase. For the thin films annealed at the 500-700 degreesC range, the vibration modes of the oxygen sublattice of the PZT perovskite phase were confirmed by FT-IR. The room temperature dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT films, measured at 1 kHz were 646 and 0.090, respectively, for thin film with 365 nm thickness annealed at 700 degreesC for 2 h. A typical P-E hysteresis loop was observed and the measured values of P-s, P-r and E-c were 68 muC/cm(2), 44 muC/cm(2) and 123 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current density was about 4.8 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1.5 V. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) thin films with 50:50 stoichiometry were deposited on silicon (100) substrates with two layers by the spin coating method using a polymeric organic solution. In order to study the influence of preannealing on the crystallinity, microstructure, grain size and roughness of the final film, two annealing procedures, slow preannealing and fast preannealing, were used. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that LiTaO3 thin films are polycrystalline. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that the thin film, which had been thermally treated using slow preannealing, was characterized by a dense and homogeneous surface. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies showed that the roughness is strongly influenced by preannealing temperature. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis and high electrical properties. The multilayer PbTiO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 110-120 nm. A 380-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out four cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (=3.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 570 and 0.016. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 13.62 mu C/cm(2) and 121.43 kV/cm, respectively. The high electrical property values are attributed to the excellent microstrutural quality and chemical homogeneity of thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. This work reports the preparation and characterization of (SnO2) thin films doped with 7 mol% Sb2O3. The films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method, and deposited by spin-coating, all of them were deposited on amorphous silica substrate. Then, we have studied the thickness effect on the microstrutural, optical and electric properties of these samples. The microstructural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The electrical resistivity measurements were obtained by the van der Pauw four-probe method. UV-visible spectroscopy and ellipsometry were carried out for the optical characterization. The films present nanometric grains in the order of 13 nm, and low roughness. The electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of the film thickness and the smallest measured value was 6.5 x 10(-3) Omega cm for the 988 nm thick film. The samples displayed a high transmittance value of 80% in the visible region. The obtained results show that the polymeric precursor method is effective for the TCOs manufacturing.

Vitreous samples containing high concentrations of WO3 (above 40% M) have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), perfilometry, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), M-Lines and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. In this work, experimental parameters were established to obtain stable thin films showing a chemical composition close to the glass precursor composition and with a high concentration of WO3. These amorphous thin films of about 4 mu m in thickness exhibit a deep blue coloration but they can be bleached by thermal treatment near the glass transition temperature. Such bleached films show several guided modes in the visible region and have a high refractive index. Controlled crystallization was realized and thus it was possible to obtain WO3 microcrystals in the amorphous phase. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pb1-xLaxTiO3 thin films, (X=0.0; 13 and 0.27mol%) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(111), Si(100) and glass substrates by spin coating, and annealed in the 200-300°C range in an O2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used for the microstructural characterization of the thin films. Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature has been observed in thin films of (PbLa)TiO3. The films deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates present PL intensity greater than those deposited on glass and silicon substrates. The intensity of PL in these thin films was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment and lanthanum molar concentration. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper focuses on the magnetoelectric coupling (ME) at room temperature in lanthanum modified bismuth ferrite thin film (BLFO) deposited on SrRuO 3-buffered Pt/TiO 2/SiO 2/Si(100) substrates by the soft chemical method. BLFO film was coherently grown at a temperature of 500 °C. The magnetoelectric coefficient measurement was performed to evidence magnetoelectric coupling behavior. Room temperature magnetic coercive field indicates that the film is magnetically soft. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cmOe. Dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss demonstrated only slight dispersion with frequency due the less two-dimensional stress in the plane of the film. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71 ° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.

ZnO thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The films were deposited on silicon substrates using the spin-coating technique, and were annealed at 330°C for 32h under pressure-assisted thermal annealing and under ambient pressure. Their structural and optical properties were characterized, and the phases formed were identified by X-ray diffraction. No secondary phase was detected. The ZnO thin films were also characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence and ultraviolet emission intensity measurements. The effect of pressure on these thin films modifies the active defects that cause the recombination of deep level states located inside the band gap that emit yellow-green (575nm) and orange (645nm) photoluminescence. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A novel method of preparation of the Si nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated in tellurite TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3 (TWB) thin films is proposed. This mew method applies RF magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature. The incorporation of Si NP was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM); isolated Si NPs with diameters of around 6 nm are observed. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was performed during TEM analysis in order to confirm the presence of Si NP and also the other elements of the thin film. The thin films are explored with respect to the photoinduced changes of the reflectivity within the 400-65 nm spectra range using a 10 ns pulsed Nd:YAG with power densities varying up to 400 MW/cm2 and beam diameter within the 3-5 mm range. The observed processes are analyzed within a framework of trapping level conceptions for the Si NP. The possible application of the discovered materials as optical sensitive sensors is proposed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Calcium copper titanate, CaCu3Ti4O12, CCTO, thin films with polycrystalline nature have been deposited by RF sputtering on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrates at a room temperature followed by annealing at 600 °C for 2 h in a conventional furnace. The CCTO thin film present a cubic structure with lattice parameter a = 7.379 ±0.001 Å free of secondary phases. The observed electrical features of CCTO thin films are highly dependent on the [CaO12], [CaO 4], [CuO11], [CuO11Vx 0] and [TiO5.VO] clusters. The CCTO film capacitor showed a dielectric loss of 0.40 and a dielectric permittivity of 70 at 1 kHz. The J-V behavior is completely symmetrical, regardless of whether the conduction is limited by interfacial barriers or by bulk-like mechanisms. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Eumelanin pigments show hydration-dependent conductivity, broad-band UV-vis absorption, and chelation of metal ions. Solution-processing of synthetic eumelanins opens new possibilities for the characterization of eumelanin in thin film form and its integration into bioelectronic devices. We investigate the effect of different synthesis routes and processing solvents on the growth, the morphology, and the chemical composition of eumelanin thin films using atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We further characterize the films by transient electrical current measurements obtained at 50% to 90% relative humidity, relevant for bioelectronic applications. We show that the use of dimethyl sulfoxide is preferable over ammonia solution as processing solvent, yielding homogeneous films with surface roughnesses below 0.5 nm and a chemical composition in agreement with the eumelanin molecular structure. These eumelanin films grow in a quasi layer-by-layer mode, each layer being composed of nanoaggregates, 1-2 nm high, 10-30 nm large. The transient electrical measurements using a planar two-electrode device suggest that there are two contributions to the current, electronic and ionic, the latter being increasingly dominant at higher hydration, and point to the importance of time-dependent electrical characterization of eumelanin films.
