The need to merge multiple sources of uncertaininformation is an important issue in many application areas, especially when there is potential for contradictions betweensources. Possibility theory offers a flexible framework to represent, and reason with, uncertain information, and there isa range of merging operators, such as the conjunctive anddisjunctive operators, for combining information. However, withthe proposals to date, the context of the information to be mergedis largely ignored during the process of selecting which mergingoperators to use. To address this shortcoming, in this paper,we propose an adaptive merging algorithm which selects largelypartially maximal consistent subsets (LPMCSs) of sources, thatcan be merged through relaxation of the conjunctive operator, byassessing the coherence of the information in each subset. In thisway, a fusion process can integrate both conjunctive and disjunctiveoperators in a more flexible manner and thereby be morecontext dependent. A comparison with related merging methodsshows how our algorithm can produce a more consensual result.

This letter introduces the convex variable step-size (CVSS) algorithm. The convexity of the resulting cost function is guaranteed. Simulations presented show that with the proposed algorithm, we obtain similar results, as with the VSS algorithm in initial convergence, while there are potential performance gains when abrupt changes occur.

The coefficients of an echo canceller with a near-end section and a far-end section are usually updated with the same updating scheme, such as the LMS algorithm. A novel scheme is proposed for echo cancellation that is based on the minimisation of two different cost functions, i.e. one for the near-end section and a different one for the far-end section. The approach considered leads to a substantial improvement in performance over the LMS algorithm when it is applied to both sections of the echo canceller. The convergence properties of the algorithm are derived. The proposed scheme is also shown to be robust to noise variations. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of the new algorithm.

A family of stochastic gradient algorithms and their behaviour in the data echo cancellation work platform are presented. The cost function adaptation algorithms use an error exponent update strategy based on an absolute error mapping, which is updated at every iteration. The quadratic and nonquadratic cost functions are special cases of the new family. Several possible realisations are introduced using these approaches. The noisy error problem is discussed and the digital recursive filter estimator is proposed. The simulation outcomes confirm the effectiveness of the proposed family of algorithms.

The least-mean-fourth (LMF) algorithm is known for its fast convergence and lower steady state error, especially in sub-Gaussian noise environments. Recent work on normalised versions of the LMF algorithm has further enhanced its stability and performance in both Gaussian and sub-Gaussian noise environments. For example, the recently developed normalised LMF (XE-NLMF) algorithm is normalised by the mixed signal and error powers, and weighted by a fixed mixed-power parameter. Unfortunately, this algorithm depends on the selection of this mixing parameter. In this work, a time-varying mixed-power parameter technique is introduced to overcome this dependency. A convergence analysis, transient analysis, and steady-state behaviour of the proposed algorithm are derived and verified through simulations. An enhancement in performance is obtained through the use of this technique in two different scenarios. Moreover, the tracking analysis of the proposed algorithm is carried out in the presence of two sources of nonstationarities: (1) carrier frequency offset between transmitter and receiver and (2) random variations in the environment. Close agreement between analysis and simulation results is obtained. The results show that, unlike in the stationary case, the steady-state excess mean-square error is not a monotonically increasing function of the step size. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. A novel most significant digit first CORDIC architecture is presented that is suitable for the VLSI design of systolic array processor cells for performing QR decomposition. This is based on an on-line CORDIC algorithm with a constant scale factor and a latency independent of the wordlength. This has been derived through the extension of previously published CORDIC algorithms. It is shown that simplifying the calculation of convergence bounds also greatly simplifies the derivation of suitable VLSI architectures. Design studies, based on a 0.35-µ CMOS standard cell process, indicate that 20 such QR processor cells operating at rates suitable for radar beamfoming can be readily accommodated on a single chip.

Here, the Jacobi iterative algorithm is applied to combat intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by frequency-selective channels. The performance bound of the equaliser is analysed in order to gain an insight into its asymptotic behaviour. Because of the error propagation problem, the potential of this algorithm is not reached in an uncoded system. However, its extension to a coded system with the application of the turbo-processing principle results in a new turbo equalisation algorithm, which demonstrates comparable performance with reduced complexity compared with some existing filter-based turbo equalisation schemes; and superior performance compared with some frequency domain solutions, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and single-carrier frequency domain equalisation.
