In dimethylsulfoxide reductase of Rhodobacter capsulatus tryptophan-116 forms a hydrogen bond with a single oxo ligand bound to the molybdenum ion. Mutation of this residue to phenylalanine affected the UV/visible spectrum of the purified Mo-VI form of dimethylsulfoxide reductase resulting in the loss of the characteristic transition at 720 nm. Results of steady-state kinetic analysis and electrochemical studies suggest that tryptophan 116 plays a critical role in stabilizing the hexacoordinate monooxo Mo-VI form of the enzyme and prevents the formation of a dioxo pentacoordinate Mo-VI species, generated as a consequence of the dissociation of one of the dithiolene ligands of the molybdopterin cofactor from the Mo ion. Incommensurate lattice fluctuations are present in the beta(L) phase (T-c similar to 1.5 K) of ET2I3 (where ET is BEDT-TTF - bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) but are absent in the beta(H) phase (T-c similar to 7 K). We propose that the disorder in the conformational degrees of freedom of the terminal ethylene groups of the ET molecules, which is required to stabilise the lattice fluctuations, increases the quasiparticle scattering rate and that this leads to the observed difference in the Superconducting critical temperatures, T-c, of the two phases. We calculate the dependence of T-c on the interlayer residual resistivity. Our theory has no free parameters. Our predictions are shown to be consistent with experiment. We describe experiments to conclusively test our hypothesis.

This review aims to provide a foundation for the safe and effective use of magnesium (Mg) alloys, including practical guidelines for the service use of Mg alloys in the atmosphere and/or in contact with aqueous solutions. This is to provide support for the rapidly increasing use of Mg in industrial applications, particularly in the automobile industry. These guidelines should be firmly based on a critical analysis of our knowledge of SCC based on (1) service experience, (2) laboratory testing and (3) understanding of the mechanism of SCC, as well as based on an understanding of the Mg corrosion mechanism.
