Man-up Against Suicide

Male suicide rates are high in Western countries including the US and Canada. Underpinned by men’s resistance to health help-seeking and challenges diagnosing mental illness including male depression, suicide ends the lives of many men amid inflicting pain and grief on the family and friends who are left behind. Fuelled by the discordant relationship between men’s low rates of depression and high rates of suicide we embarked on a unique and novel photovoice study title Man-Up Against Suicide. Specifically, men who have contemplated suicide in the past, and individuals (men and women) who have lost a male partner, family member or friend to suicide were invited to take photographs representing their experiences with men’s suicide with the ultimate goal of messaging ‘at risk’ men that there are alternatives to taking one’s life. Participants subsequently completed semi-structured individual interviews narrating the photographs and providing captions to accompany their selected images. In this presentation we share the preliminary study findings along with some participant photographs and narratives as a means to discussing; 1) men’s experiences of suicidal behaviours and their management strategies; and, 2) how men’s and women’s experiences of losing a male to suicide can de-stigmatize men’s mental illness and raise public awareness about male suicide.

A high performance IIR digital filter chip

The design of a high-performance IIR (infinite impulse response) digital filter is described. The chip architecture operates on 11-b parallel, two's complement input data with a 12-b parallel two's complement coefficient to produce a 14-b two's complement output. The chip is implemented in 1.5-µm, double-layer-metal CMOS technology, consumes 0.5 W, and can operate up to 15 Msample/s. The main component of the system is a fine-grained systolic array that internally is based on a signed binary number representation (SBNR). Issues addressed include testing, clock distribution, and circuitry for conversion between two's complement and SBNR.

An evaluation of a tiered interrelated intervention to address hazardous/ harmful drinking

In Northern Ireland, alcohol misuse impacts negatively on individual drinkers, families and communities. The ‘Alcohol and You Project’ in the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust is a funded project providing a range of inter-related services with the Trust and alcohol/drug misuse charities. It includes a self-help interactive website, brief intervention drop in clinics and counseling services. Queen's University Belfast is evaluating the effectiveness of the project to reduce hazardous/ harmful drinking.

Full-Duplex Spectrum Sharing in Cooperative Single Carrier Systems

In this paper, we propose cyclic prefix single carrier (CP-SC) full-duplex transmission in cooperative spectrum sharing to achieve multipath diversity gain and full-duplex spectral efficiency. Integrating full-duplex transmission into cooperative spectrum sharing systems results in two intrinsic problems: 1) the peak interference power constraint at the PUs are concurrently inflicted on the transmit power at the secondary source (SS) and the secondary relays (SRs); and 2) the residual loop interference occurs between the transmit and the receive antennas at the secondary relays. Thus, examining the effects of residual loop interference under peak interference power constraint at the primary users and maximum transmit power constraints at the SS and the SRs is a particularly challenging problem in frequency selective fading channels. To do so, we derive and quantitatively evaluate the exact and the asymptotic outage probability for several relay selection policies in frequency selective fading channels. Our results manifest that a zero diversity gain is obtained with full-duplex.
