Simultaneous NO reduction and CO oxidation in the presence of O-2,H2O and SO2 over Cu/Mg/AUO (Cu-cat), Ce/Mg/Al/O (Ce-cat) and Cu/Ce/Mg/Al/O (CuCe-cat) were studied. At low temperatures (<340 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O enhanced the activity of CuCe-cat for NO and CO conversions, but significantly suppressed the activity of Cu-cat and Ce-cat, At high temperature (720 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O had no adverse effect on the NO and CO conversions over these catalysts. The addition of SO2 to NO + CO + O-2 + H2O system had no effect on the, reaction of CO + O-2 over Cu-cat, but deactivated this catalyst for NO + CO and CO + H2O reactions; over Ce-cat, all of these reactions of NO + CO, CO + O-2 and CO + H2O were suppressed significantly; over CuCe-cat, NO + CO and CO + O-2 reactions were not affected while the reaction of CO + H2O was slightly inhibited. The low-temperature heat capacities of trifluoroacetamide were precisely determined with a small sample precision automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 78 to 404 K. A solid-to-solid phase transition, a fusion and a phase transition from a liquid crystalline phase to fully liquid phase have been observed at the temperatures of 336.911+/-0.102, 347.622+/-0.094 and 388.896+/-0.160 K, respectively. The molar enthalpies of these phase transitions as well as the chemical purity of the substance were determined to be 5.576+/-0.004, 11.496+/-0.007, 1.340+/-0.005 kJ mol(-1) and 99.30 mol%, respectively, on the basis of the heat capacity measurements. The molar entropies of the three phase transitions were calculated to be 16.550+/-0.012, 33.071+/-0.029 and 3.447+/-0.027 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. Further researches of the thermochemical properties for this compound have been carried out by means of TG and DSC techniques. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two series of sulfided Ni or Co promoted Mo/alumina catalysts, having different Ni or Co loadings, were characterized by their activities for the transformation of cyclopentanone into cyclopentanethiol (flow reactor, 220 degrees C, atmospheric pressure) and for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene (flow reactor, 340 degrees C, 3 MPa hydrogen pressure). The addition of the promoter increased significantly the activity of the Mo/alumina catalyst for both reactions, up to a maximum obtained with the catalysts having a (promoter)/(promoter+Mo) molar ratio equal to 0.3-0.4. This increase in activity was due in part to an increase in the hydrogenating properties of the Mo/alumina catalyst. However, an additional modification of the catalyst (basic and nucleophilic properties) must be considered to account for the spectacular effect of the promoter on the rate of the dibenzothiophene direct desulfurization reaction. Capillary zone electrophoresis was used to monitor the interaction between bilirubin and human serum albumin. Cord blood serum samples were injected directly into an uncoated fused-silica capillary (30 cm x 50 mu m i.d.) and separation was accomplished within 4 min without extensive sample pretreatment. The most suitable running buffer to separate free bilirubin from albumin bound bilirubin was found to contain 1.0 mmol/L EDTA, 5% acetonitrile and 15 mmol/L phosphate with pH adjusted to 8.4. Approximately two bilirubin dianions could be bound per human serum albumin molecule in the cord blood serum. The binding constant was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(5) (L/mol) at 25 degrees C and pH 8.4. The peak area ratio of free bilirubin to total bilirubin can be used to determine the bilirubin binding capacity of cord blood serum for the concentration range of total bilirubin from 204 to 340 mu mol/L using 1:5 diluted cord blood seras. A monolithic silica based strong cation-exchange stationary phase was successfully prepared for capillary electrochromatography. The monolithic silica matrix from a sol-gel process was chemically modified by treatment with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane followed by a chemical oxidation procedure to produce the desired function. The strong cation-exchange stationary phase was characterized by its substantial and stable electroosmotic flow (EOF), and it was observed that the EOF value of the prepared column remained almost unchanged at different buffer pH values and slowly decreased with increasing phosphate concentration in the mobile phase. The monolithic silica column with strong cation-exchange stationary phase has been successfully employed in the electrochromatographic separation of beta-blockers and alkaloids extracted from traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). The column efficiencies for the tested beta-blockers varied from 210,000 to 340,000 plates/m. A peak compression effect was observed for atenolol with the mobile phase having a low phosphate concentration.

This chapter examines the role of the advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) within the domains of practice identified by the Royal College of Nursing (2002) as the teaching and coaching function. (Note that this is referred to by the NMC as the education function. It approaches the analysis against the backdrop of three policy documents: The Expert Patient: a new approach to chronic disease management for the 21st century(DoH 2001), Choosing Health: making healthy choices easier (DoH 2004), Our health, our care, our say (DoH 2006). It draws into the frame the experiences of ANP students as they work with patients, clients and carers, with the intention of enabling health and managing illness. It uses examples from a range of everyday practice setting to illustrate the inherent challenges of the teaching and coaching function of the ANP, at the same time as recognising its significance if patients, clients and carers are to be enabled to make choices that might optimize their well-being. Before this, however, some statistics are presented to focus thinking on why education is an invaluable component of advanced nursing practice.
