vHOG, a multispecies vertebrate ontology of homologous organs groups.

MOTIVATION: Most anatomical ontologies are species-specific, whereas a framework for comparative studies is needed. We describe the vertebrate Homologous Organs Groups ontology, vHOG, used to compare expression patterns between species.¦RESULTS: vHOG is a multispecies anatomical ontology for the vertebrate lineage. It is based on the HOGs used in the Bgee database of gene expression evolution. vHOG version 1.4 includes 1184 terms, follows OBO principles and is based on the Common Anatomy Reference Ontology (CARO). vHOG only describes structures with historical homology relations between model vertebrate species. The mapping to species-specific anatomical ontologies is provided as a separate file, so that no homology hypothesis is stated within the ontology itself. Each mapping has been manually reviewed, and we provide support codes and references when available. HIV/Aids-Prävention, Schweiz 2007: befriedigende Situation bei den Jugendlichen, eher problematische Situation in den höheren Altersgruppen.

In der Schweiz gibt es seit 1987 periodisch wiederholte Studien über das Sexualverhalten verschiedener Bevölkerungsgruppen. Damit lassen sich HIV-/STIrelevantes Verhalten sowie die Entwicklung anderer wichtiger Parameter der sexuellen Gesundheit beobachten. Der vorliegende Beitrag entstand auf der Grundlage des neuesten Berichts über das Monitoring der Schweizer Präventionsstrategie gegen HIV/Aids]. Er liefert einen Überblick über das Sexual- und Schutzverhalten von 17-bis 20-jährigen Jugendlichen und vergleicht die entsprechenden Parameter mit jenen anderer Altersgruppen.

Ongoing and future developments at the Universal Protein Resource.

The primary mission of Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) is to support biological research by maintaining a stable, comprehensive, fully classified, richly and accurately annotated protein sequence knowledgebase, with extensive cross-references and querying interfaces freely accessible to the scientific community. UniProt is produced by the UniProt Consortium which consists of groups from the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and the Protein Information Resource (PIR). UniProt is comprised of four major components, each optimized for different uses: the UniProt Archive, the UniProt Knowledgebase, the UniProt Reference Clusters and the UniProt Metagenomic and Environmental Sequence Database. UniProt is updated and distributed every 4 weeks and can be accessed online for searches or download at http://www.uniprot.org.

Bioinformática: base de datos de matrices de expresión génica para su análisis vía web

El IBB ha desarrollado un servidor de aplicaciones: http://revolutionresearch.uab.es para el análisis de microarrays. Estas microarrays las obtienen y las suben a la base de datos local los usuarios de la aplicación. En la presente memoria se detalla el proceso realizado para automatizar la subida de microarrays públicas a la base de datos local. Estas microarrays se obtendrán del NCBI. El proceso de descarga de microarrays se realizará cada dos meses y estará sincronizado con un proceso de descarga de genes marcadores de microarrays del NCBI. En la memoria también se describen las fases realizadas para crear la interfaz web para gestionar estas microarrays públicas y las modificaciones realizadas sobre el aplicativo web para permitir realizar análisis con estas microarrays.

Optimització del procés d'arrencada d'un sistema multiprocessador

L’objectiu d’aquest projecte és el d’optimitzar l’arrencada d’un sistema encastat amb diferents elements de còmput des del punt de vista de l’estalvi de memòria, per tal de reduir el cost de la fabricació de les plaques. El que s’ha fet és aprofitar una connexió USB per a connectar la placa a un host, en aquest cas un PC, i descarregar via USB tota la informació necessària per a arrencar cadascun dels components de la placa, prescindint d’aquesta manera de les memòries no volàtils de les que depenien originalment.

ClubADSL: When your neighbors are your friends

ADSL is becoming the standard form of residential and small-business broadband Internet access due to, primarily, its low deployment cost. These ADSL residential lines are often deployed with 802.11 Access Points (AP) that providewireless connectivity. Given the density of ADSL deployment, it is often possible for a residential wireless client to be in range of several other APs, belonging to neighbors, with ADSL connectivity. While the ADSL technology has showed evident limits in terms of capacity (with speeds ranging 1-10 Mbps), the short-range wireless communication can guarantee a muchhigher capacity (up to 20 Mbps). Furthermore, the ADSL links in the neighborhood are generally under-utilized, since ADSL subscribers do not connect 100% of the time. Therefore, it is possible for a wireless client to simultaneously connect to several APs in range and effectively aggregate their available ADSL bandwidth.In this paper, we introduce ClubADSL, a wireless client that can simultaneously connect to several APs in range on different frequencies and aggregate both their downlink and uplink capacity. ClubADSL is a software that runs locally on the client-side, and it requires neither modification to the existing Internet infrastructure, nor any hardware/protocol upgradesto the 802.11 local area network. We show the feasibility of ClubADSL in seamlessly transmitting TCP traffic, and validate its implementation both in controlled scenarios and with current applications over real ADSL lines. In particular we show that a ClubADSL client can greatly benefit from the aggregated download bandwidth in the case of server-client applications such as video streaming, but can also take advantage of the increased upload bandwidth greatly reducing download times with incentive-based P2P applications such as BitTorrent.

Education as a mirror of Spanish society: challenges and policies towards multiple diversity

The ways in which the dominant cultural majority frames the educationalsystem determine perceptions of its own identity and understandings ofthe ‘other.’ In this article I take a political approach, by examining themanagement of cultural diversity within Spanish education policies, treating“education as the mirror of society”. This article analyzes Spanish challengesand policies approaches towards the management of immigrationrelated diversity in education. The main finding is that there is not one approach,but several, due to both the decentralized character of the educationsystem and the multiplicity of diversity that is at stake (i.e. language,religion, culture etc.)

Between pluralism and majoritarianism: the European Court of Human Rights on religious symbols and education

How is it possible to square the development of a consistent Europeanapproach to religious diversity with the recognition of the sometimes-conflictiveplurality of state-religion models? The Court´s support of the liberalprinciples of separation and neutrality have either been deplored by Christianconservatives as the result of European Christophobia, or celebratedby secularists as contributing to the formation of a Europe free of religion.In contrast, the present chapter argues for a differentiated approach toEuropean jurisprudence, outlining how the Court has been oscillating betweenan appealing liberal-pluralist perspective or framework, and a questionablemajoritarian one. Both perspectives are illustrated by focusing onrepresentative decisions in the area of religious education and symbols.

Dynamics of diversity within the Mossos d’Esquadra

This chapter offers a case-study of diversity and diversity policies withinthe Mossos d’Esquadra, the police force of the Catalan autonomous communityin Spain. The case is described in a comprehensive way (includingpolicies in all relevant policy areas: recruitment, retention, and promotion)and at the same time analyzed with a new analytical framework (includingthe definition of diversity, the motivation for diversity within the organisation,and the facilitation of diversity within the organisation with policies).The goal of the chapter is twofold. First, offer a deeper understanding ofthe dynamics of diversity within this police force. Second, demonstrate theacademic potential of this new analytical framework.

Spheres of diversities: from concept to policy

This book is concerned with the diversity debate in the context of Europe.It is about diversity both as a concept and as a policy. Indeed, the epicentreof the analysis is the link between the spheres of diversity-concepts anddiversity-policies. The book explores how the concept of diversity orientatespolicies and management, and also how public/private managementfacilitates new policy orientations. As such, the book enhances conceptualthinking on diversity, but also facilitates policy thinking on the conceptinvolved in novel policy orientations towards diversity.

Tapiola-ryhmän Yhtiökokousjärjestelmä-ohjelmiston määrittely ja suunnittelu

Tässä insinöörityössä selvitettiin mahdollisuuksia parantaa Tapiola-ryhmän Yhtiökokousjärjestelmä-ohjelmiston ominaisuuksia ja tietoturvallisuutta. Järjestelmää käytetään Tapiola-ryhmän vakuutusyhtiöiden yhtiökokouksiin osallistuvien osakkaiden kirjaamiseen ja heidän äänten laskentaan. Tutkimuksen perusteella tehtiin järjestelmän määrittely ja suunnittelu, joiden tuloksena syntyivät toiminnallinen ja tekninen määrittelydokumentaatio, jotka toimivat pohjana uuden Yhtiökokousjärjestelmän toteutukselle. Työ tehtiin Tapiola-ryhmälle Tieto-Tapiola Oy:n tilauksesta. Työn alussa tutkittiin erilaisia mahdollisuuksia toteuttaa järjestelmän ohjelmisto- ja tietokanta-arkkitehtuuri, joiden perusteella määrittelyä ja suunnittelua alettiin toteuttaa. Tutkimuksen perusteella päädyttiin käyttämään Java SE -arkkitehtuuria sovelluksen toteutukseen ja SQL Server -tietokantaa järjestelmän tietovarastona. Valittuihin ratkaisuihin päädyttiin niiden hyvien tietoturvallisuus- ja kertakirjausominaisuuksien takia. Toiminnallisessa määrittelydokumentissa käydään läpi järjestelmälle asetettuja vaatimuksia ja kuvataan sen toiminnot, liiketoimintaluokkamalli, käyttöliittymä ja tulosteet. Lisäksi siinä otetaan kantaa järjestelmän käyttöympäristöön, ulkoisiin tietokantaliittymiin, käyttäjän tunnistautumiseen ja tietoturvallisuuteen sekä käydään läpi sen toiminta käyttäjien näkökulmasta. Toiminnallisen määrittelydokumentin pohjalta luotiin tekninen määrittelydokumentti. Siinä kuvataan järjestelmän ympäristö ja ohjelmisto- sekä tietokanta-arkkitehtuuri yleisellä tasolla. Tämän lisäksi järjestelmän arkkitehtuuria käydään myös tarkemmin läpi sekä kuvataan moduulit ja toiminnot niin tarkasti, että niiden perusteella voidaan toteuttaa koko järjestelmä. Työn tuloksena syntyivät kattava toiminnallinen ja tekninen määrittelydokumentaatio, joissa käydään läpi kaikki järjestelmän toteuttamiseen tarvittavat elementit sillä tarkkuudella, että järjestelmän toteuttaminen voidaan aloittaa.

Helsingin ammattikorkeakoulu Stadian kulttuurituottamisen suuntautumisvaihtoehto : ensimmäisen opintonsa aloittaneen vuosikurssin seuranta

This thesis is based on a questionnaire presented to pilot students on the Degree Programme in Media, at Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia, of 1999. The initial aim was to discover whether the school was of use in the transition process into a field of work. Based on this, the questions for a questionnaire were formulated. The research thus aimed at answering questions concerning a) whether the education answered the need of working life b) the work situation of respondents and c) how respondents saw the future of Arts Management as well as themselves. The questionnaire was prepared using Stadia's Elomake software on the Internet. There was also a project specific contract for this final project, allowing information gathered during the project to be used in regional curriculum work. The thesis deals with Arts Management curriculum work within the framework provided by polytechnic law as well as Stadia's curriculum work processes. Research and education in Arts Management in Finland generally is also studied, and specifically in Stadia itself. The essence of this final project is derived from the analysis of the answers to the questionnaire. All responses were analysed, with the answers being divided into three subheadings according to the research questions. Questions and answers were also examined through a correlation matrix in an attempt to discover the dependency between things and conclusions were made in the light of relevant source literature. The questionnaire is meant to be used for the follow-up of every graduating Arts Management group. Information obtained through this questionnaire will of benefit in preliminary curriculum work.

Viikon albumi -haastattelu osana YleX-kanavan ohjelmatarjontaa

Nuorille suunnatut lähetysvirtaradioasemat käyvät Suomessa koko ajan tiukempaa taistelua kuuntelijoidensa huomiosta. Kuuntelijalukuja tarkastellaan miltei viikoittain ja kuuntelijoille tarjottavaa tuotetta pyritään kilpailun koventuessa koko ajan kehittämään. Yleisradiossa tapahtui viimeksi kanavauudistus vuonna 2003, jonka seurauksena Radiomafia -kanava sai uuden nimen YleX. Uudistuksessa radiokanavan kohdeyleisö tarkennettiin uudelleen ja kanavalla siirryttiin soittolistapohjaiseen radion tekemiseen, jossa kanavan musiikkia soitetaan etukäteen laaditulta soittolistalta. Kanavauudistusta kritisoitiin mediassa ja arkipuheessa, vaikka YleX -kanavan viikkokuulijamäärät lähtivät nousuun. Vieläkin YleX:n musiikkitarjontaa arvostellaan yksipuoliseksi ja samalla myös kanavan ohjelmat ovat joutuneet kritiikin kohteeksi. Opinnäytetyöni käsittelee viihdeartistihaastattelun tekemistä YleX-radiokanavalla. Työssäni YleX-kanavalla olen tehnyt viikoittaista viihdeartistihaastattelua, joka tunnetaan nimellä Viikon Albumi -haastattelu. Tämä haastattelu on osa arkipäiväistä YleX Tänään-ohjelmaa, missä sitä lähetetään maanantaisin kello 11.10. Omia haastatteluja reflektoimalla selvitin haastattelijan näkökulmasta, minkälaisin menetelmin nykyaikaisessa nopeatempoisessa lähetysvirtaradiossa syntyy mielenkiintoinen ja syvällinen viihdeartisti-haastattelu. Kuinka lähelle laadukkaan viihdehaastattelun tavoitteita on mahdollista päästä 15 minuutin Viikon Albumi -haastattelun aikana? Työssäni keskityn etenkin YleX:n haastatteluiden viihteelliseen luonteeseen ja nimenomaan viihdeartistin haastattelemiseen, jota on alan kirjallisuudessa käsitelty melko vähän. Viihdyttävän ja hauskan viihdeartistihaastattelun tekeminen on vaikea haastattelumuoto, jonka tekemistä pyrin valottamaan omien töideni avulla. Toivon, että työstäni on jatkossa hyötyä myös muille samankaltaisissa haastattelutilanteissa.

Silta yksilöstä yhteisöön : ryhmätyö teatterin tekemisen välineenä

This final thesis focused on experimental knowledge of working in the group. The topic was approached from the perspective of the theatre group director. The thesis itself contains two practical theatre group examples. One is a youngsters' theatre group called La Drama, directed by the author during 2004/2005. The other one is the author's own final artistic production, named Protasio - Kohtaamisia Afrikassa (Protasio - Meeting in Africa), which opened in January 2006. The group leader's role is presented as an important personal tool in theatre, and one that it is important to develop in a professional way. The director's role is to be the promoter of the process, the inspirer and a strong group leader. A person who is in this role will lead the group through the creative process using the community. The thesis identifies and advocates good practice, and ideas of how to create theatre with a group-based method. These analyses can offer useful ideas and knowledge to the beginner in the field of theatre direction.
