Quantitative RNA-seq analysis of the campylobacter jejuni transcriptome

Campylobacter jejuni is the most common bacterial cause of foodborne disease in the developed world. Its general physiology and biochemistry, as well as the mechanisms enabling it to colonize and cause disease in various hosts, are not well understood, and new approaches are required to understand its basic biology. High-throughput sequencing technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for functional genomic research. Recent studies have shown that direct Illumina sequencing of cDNA (RNA-seq) is a useful technique for the quantitative and qualitative examination of transcriptomes. In this study we report RNA-seq analyses of the transcriptomes of C. jejuni (NCTC11168) and its rpoN mutant. This has allowed the identification of hitherto unknown transcriptional units, and further defines the regulon that is dependent on rpoN for expression. The analysis of the NCTC11168 transcriptome was supplemented by additional proteomic analysis using liquid chromatography-MS. The transcriptomic and proteomic datasets represent an important resource for the Campylobacter research community. © 2011 SGM.

Resumen: El artículo presenta las sucesivas etapas que configuraron el derrotero del sacerdote patriota en las primeras horas del movimiento independentista. Se destacan tanto los valores de su desempeño ministerial como su ascendencia social y política en el ambiente porteño, con la perspectiva propia de los ideales ilustrados de su tiempo y en particular durante el curato en San Nicolás de Bari, la segunda parroquia más importante de la ciudad. Con información bien documentada da cuenta de su nacimiento y de su formación desde sus estudios humanísticos, se reconstruyen los años siguientes dedicados al oficio pastoral de regreso en Buenos Aires y en Maldonado (Uruguay) en tiempos de las invasiones inglesas, su ministerio en San Nicolás de Bari cuando acontece la Revolución de Mayo y su tarea a favor de la causa patriótica desde su participación en el Cabildo Abierto del 22 y su incorporación como vocal de la Primera Junta. Se despliegan los aspectos sobresalientes de esta última misión y los aspectos que se destacan en este recorrido por la vida y la obra de este cura patriota son: compromiso honesto, integridad y actitud de servicio sin reservas desde la función pública.

La teología de Nicolás de Cusa : un desafío para la elaboración de una teología natural

Resumen: El cardenal Nicolás de Cusa se propuso resolver el impasse que en el campo teológico implica la descalificación que desde el nominalismo se hizo conocimiento metafísico. Fue su particular interpretación de la naturaleza de Dios y su modo de conocerla, la que le permitió fundar una nueva teología con la que pretendía superar las limitaciones de un saber que en su opinión sólo era apto para conocer el orden finito. Para ello propone sustituir la vía de conocimiento racional, por otra de carácter puramente intuitivo, cuyo rasgo esencial es el saber del no saber, esto es, la vía de la “docta ignorancia”. Con lo cual el hombre está en condiciones de alcanzar un tipo de saber de orden místico sólo parangonable con el que se puede alcanzar en la bienaventuranza eterna. Es propósito del presente estudio determinar si, sobre las bases presentadas por el Cusano es posible erigir el saber que conviene a una teología natural, e incluso al de una teología mística.

Distribución geográfica de los peces de aguas continentales de la República Argentina.

Este libro pretende reunir la información disponible sobre la distribución geográfica precisa de los peces continentales del país. Hasta el momento esta información se encontraba dispersa en varios cientos de publicaciones, muchas de ellas díficiles de encontrar por ser antiguas, estar publicadas principalmente en revistas extranjeras que se reciben en unas pocas -o a veces ninguna- biblioteca o estar en publicaciones de difusión restringida. A raíz de lo anterior, esta tarea sólo pudo ser posible gracias a la colaboración de los autores de los trabajos recopilados, y en particular a la ayuda de la cátedra de Ictiología de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata que posee una gran mayoría de la bibliografía utilizada. Es mi intención continuar trabajando en la actualización permanentemente de esta base de datos. Trabajos de marcación de peces en el Río de la Plata

Sampling sites were located at: 1) a coastal area on Buenos Aires harbour where high concentrations of "sábalo" occur year round and which on account of its importance merits a specific program itself; 2) a coastal fringe from Buenos Aires harbour to Quilmes (34° 10' - 58° 10') and 3) different stations within the inner zone of the river, which were covered through a tagging campaign performed as part of an agreement among INIDEP-Argentina, CARP-Argentina, Uruguay, INAPE-Uruguay. At present (Winter 1989) recaptures from the first seven species have been obtained, with a total recovery of 3.81 o/o the highest percentages corresponding to patí, boga, armado and sábalo. Mussel Community Studies [Year One].

Mytilus californianus communities (mussel beds) were examined from six geographic localities in Southern California. These included two mainland sites, Coal Oil Point and San Diego; and four island sites, San Miguel, Santa Cruz, San Nicholas, and Santa Barbara Islands. Optimal sample sizes were determined for each locality. In general, a sample, size of 1500 cm2 (five cores) was optimal for the "typical" mussel bed. However, structurally unique mussel beds required individual consideration. Community biomass, diversity, species richness, and species evenness were calculated quarterly for the island localities and biannually for mainland locations. The molluscs, primarily the mussels, accounted for 90% of the total biomass while all other groups combined accounted for 10% or less of the total biomass. The mussel communities from all localities contributed to the master species list which conservatively contained 346 species. The most diverse localities were Coal Oil Point and Santa Cruz Island with an average number of 73 and 74 species/O.lS m respectively. No overall seasonal patterns existed in community composition. The community similarity analyses showed the mainland localities biotically dissimilar from the islands and both groups were characterized by distinct faunal assemblages. In addition, San Miguel Island biota were unique among the island sites. The most important mussel bed structural attributes provided habitats for the associated community and included sediment and coarse fraction features. Food-related resources provided by the mussel bed were secondarily important. Community diversity generally increased with the quantity of habitat and food resources. (PDF contains 138 pages)
