With the great development of Tianjing New Coastal District economy, people need more land to build and live. Land subsidence, which is caused by its special engineering geological conditions, has restricted the further development in the district. Soft soil consolidation is main factor of land subsidence ;thus , on the basis of consolidation theory, the paper make further study on soft soils one-dimension nonlinear consolidation which contains two parts:(1) the nonlinear consolidation of permeability coefficient and compressibility coefficient changing with time and depth, which means real one-dimension nonlinear consolidation;(2) the non-homogeneous consolidation of permeability coefficient and compressibility coefficient only changing with depth. Firstly, nonlinear characteristics of soft soils are elaborated. Hypoplastic theory is introduced to establish a modified soft soils nonlinear constitutive model; the nonlinear governing equation of compressibility coefficient is built, and the nonlinear characteristics of compressibility coefficient are analyzed. Secondly, Considering Load Fluctuation and soil thickness changing ,the consolidation characteristics of single layer is discussed in the paper; meanwhile, on the basis of the Davis and Raymonds hypothesis and single layer nonlinear consolidation equation, the doubled-layer one-dimension nonlinear consolidation equation is also derived. The solution of the equation is obtained by analytical method, and the consolidation characteristics of doubled-layer soft soil nonlinear theory is also analyzed. Finally, based on assumption that permeability coefficient and compressibility coefficient is varying along depth, single layer soil one-dimension non-homogeneous consolidation differential equation is derived; and the approximate solution is obtained. Furthermore, the single layer non-homogeneous consolidation is extended to double layer non-homogeneous consolidation theory. By using parabolic differential scheme, the matrix equation is established; and the solution of the matrix equation is obtained by chase method. Consolidation characteristics of soil soft single (double) layer non-homogeneous consolidation theory and Terzaghis theory are also discussed.

How can we insure that knowledge embedded in a program is applied effectively? Traditionally the answer to this question has been sought in different problem solving paradigms and in different approaches to encoding and indexing knowledge. Each of these is useful with a certain variety of problem, but they all share a common problem: they become ineffective in the face of a sufficiently large knowledge base. How then can we make it possible for a system to continue to function in the face of a very large number of plausibly useful chunks of knowledge? In response to this question we propose a framework for viewing issues of knowledge indexing and retrieval, a framework that includes what appears to be a useful perspective on the concept of a strategy. We view strategies as a means of controlling invocation in situations where traditional selection mechanisms become ineffective. We examine ways to effect such control, and describe meta-rules, a means of specifying strategies which offers a number of advantages. We consider at some length how and when it is useful to reason about control, and explore the advantages meta-rules offer for doing this.

This thesis discusses Irish Modernist poetry written between 1905 and 1970, specifically the poetry of Joseph Campbell (1879-1944), Thomas MacGreevy (1893-1967), Denis Devlin (1908-1959) and Brian Coffey (1905-1995). All four poets have been largely neglected in criticism until a growth of interest encouraged by Michael Smith and Trevor Joyces New Writers Press during the 1970s. J.C.C. Mays, Stan Smith, Susan Schreibman, Terence Brown, Patricia Coughlan and Alex Davis published subsequent critical support during the 80s and 90s. My research aims to highlight poetry previously omitted from the canon of Irish literature, those with connections to British or continental European literary movements as well as poetry by women writers and writers from the North. Part of this exploration of Irish Poetic Modernisms involves an investigation of intersections between poetic modernisms and Irish war poetry and of depictions of Irish masculinity in the poetry of Devlin and Coffey. My discussion of Campbells poetry focuses on links between the early regional modernism of his poetry and later Irish modernist poetry, including his participation in the Ulster Literary Theatre, with the Literary Revival community in Dublin and his association with the proto-Imagist movement in London. My examination of connections between Irish war poetry and Irish modernism allows me to discuss the writing of several underrecognized Irish poets who are contemporaries and near contemporaries of the main subjects of my thesis. Thomas MacGreevys poetry is the most clear case study of the links between Irish modernist poetry and poetry about Irelands participation in the Great War. MacGreevys writing reveals his multiple allegiances: he both elegizes and challenges the increasing cultural inhibitions of Free State Ireland. Denis Devlins poetic portrayals of Ireland reveal his rejection both of the Literary Revivals fascination with Celticism and of Dublins literary community while upholding tradition poetic gender roles. My research explores representations of masculinity and Irish politics, including heroic masculine imagery, in the long poems of Devlin and Coffey. My discussion of Brian Coffey considers the importance of the figure of the poet as maker to his writing and his relationship with Ireland during his long writing career. I also consider his role as the editor and executor of Devlins literary estate and the impact that had on both the latters posthumous reputation and Coffeys later writing.

This thesis is a study of how the Gerald Ford administration struggled to address a perceived loss of US credibility after the collapse of Vietnam, with a focus on the role of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the formulation, implementation and subsequent defence of US Angolan policy. By examining the immediate post-Vietnam period, this thesis shows that Vietnam had a significant impact on Kissingers actions on Angola, which resulted in an ill conceived covert operation in another third world conflict. In 1974, Africa was a neglected region in Cold War US foreign policy, yet the effects of the Portuguese revolution led to a rapid decolonization of its African territories, of which Angola was to become the focus of superpower competition. After South Vietnam collapsed in April 1975, Kissinger became fixated on restoring the perceived loss of US prestige, Angola provided the first opportunity to address this. Despite objections from his advisors, Kissinger methodically engineered a covert program to assist two anti-Marxist guerrilla groups in Angola. As the crisis escalated, the media discovered the operation and the Congress decided to cease all funding. A period of heated tensions ensued, resulting in Kissinger creating a new African policy to outmanoeuvre his critics publicly, while privately castigating them to foreign leaders. This thesis argues that Kissingers dismissal of internal dissent and opposition from the Congress was influenced by what he perceived as bureaucrats being affected by the Vietnam syndrome, and his obsession with restoring US credibility. By looking at the private and public records as expressed in government meetings and official reports, US newspaper and television coverage and diplomatic cables this thesis addresses the question of how the lessons of Vietnam failed to influence Kissingers actions in Angola, but the lessons of Angola were heavily influential in the construction of a new US-African policy.

This thesis analyses the influence of the esoteric tradition on D.H. Lawrence and W.B. Yeats thought and examines both authors writings in light of the antidemocratic political religions that emerged during and after their respective careers. While a number of extant studies investigate the connection between modernism and the occult and a number of critics have discussed the importance of antidemocratic politics to modernism, this study is unique in its emphasis on the relationship between modernist esotericism and antidemocratic politics, and in its insistence that the interconnection between the two constitutes a fundamental part of both authors world-views. This study calls for the development of a multivalent understanding of modernism, which appears as neither a cultural movement identifiable with bourgeois, capitalist, paternalist, ethnocentrist, phallocentrist, and logocentrist ideologies (Surette 5) nor entirely the opposite; Romantic, feministic, primitivistic and countercultural. Rather, modernism will be shown to have encompassed both of these ideological orientations, effectively operating on a double front in its crusade to establish a new age. This complexity is visible in both Lawrence and Yeats work, as both authors advocate a return to traditional structures while simultaneously endeavouring to usher Western civilisation into a new modern paradigm. Although they primarily grounded their writings in a mythico-pastoral discourse that masked the practical implications of their revolutionary agendas, both authors possessed an attraction to Futurist thought and, albeit rarely, showed an awareness that the change they envisioned could not be brought about without a radical intervention in the political and economic sectors an intervention that would necessarily take place through the medium of the machine from which they were often so adamant to distance themselves. This fusion of technophilic and Arcadian thought-currents dubbed archeofuturism by the French right-wing intellectual Guillaume Faye constitutes the central focus of this discussion of Lawrentian and Yeatsian thought.

In this thesis, I examine the relationship between the Kyoto School philosopher, Nishitani Keiji, and the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, focusing on the two thinkers respective approaches to the problem of nihilism. The work begins by positioning Nishitanis interpretation of Nietzsches account of nihilism with reference to diverse readings of Nietzsche in Western scholarship. I then consider the development of Nishitanis reading of Nietzsche from his lecture series on nihilism, The Self- Overcoming of Nihilism, through to his magnum opus, Religion and Nothingness. I make two key contributions to recent scholarly debate on Nishitanis relationship to Nietzsche. The first is to emphasise the importance of Nishitanis response to the idea of eternal recurrence for understanding his critical approach to Nietzsches thinking. I argue against the view, offered by Bret Davis, that Nishitanis criticisms of Nietzsche are primarily based on the formers negative assessment of the idea of will to power. The second contribution is to situate Nishitanis critical approach to eternal recurrence within his broader attempt to formulate a Zen-influenced conception of temporality and historicity. I then argue for the necessity of this conceptual background for coming to grips with his conception of the transhistorical grounds of historicity in emptiness (nyat), as outlined in the later chapters of Religion and Nothingness.

BACKGROUND: Sensor-augmented pump therapy (SAPT) integrates real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and offers an alternative to multiple daily injections (MDI). Previous studies provide evidence that SAPT may improve clinical outcomes among people with type 1 diabetes. Sensor-Augmented Pump Therapy for A1c Reduction (STAR) 3 is a multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy of SAPT to that of MDI in subjects with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Subjects were randomized to either continue with MDI or transition to SAPT for 1 year. Subjects in the MDI cohort were allowed to transition to SAPT for 6 months after completion of the study. SAPT subjects who completed the study were also allowed to continue for 6 months. The primary end point was the difference between treatment groups in change in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) percentage from baseline to 1 year of treatment. Secondary end points included percentage of subjects with HbA1c < or =7% and without severe hypoglycemia, as well as area under the curve of time spent in normal glycemic ranges. Tertiary end points include percentage of subjects with HbA1c < or =7%, key safety end points, user satisfaction, and responses on standardized assessments. RESULTS: A total of 495 subjects were enrolled, and the baseline characteristics similar between the SAPT and MDI groups. Study completion is anticipated in June 2010. CONCLUSIONS: Results of this randomized controlled trial should help establish whether an integrated RT-CGM and CSII system benefits patients with type 1 diabetes more than MDI.

The autosomal recessive kidney disease nephronophthisis (NPHP) constitutes the most frequent genetic cause of terminal renal failure in the first 3 decades of life. Ten causative genes (NPHP1-NPHP9 and NPHP11), whose products localize to the primary cilia-centrosome complex, support the unifying concept that cystic kidney diseases are "ciliopathies". Using genome-wide homozygosity mapping, we report here what we believe to be a new locus (NPHP-like 1 [NPHPL1]) for an NPHP-like nephropathy. In 2 families with an NPHP-like phenotype, we detected homozygous frameshift and splice-site mutations, respectively, in the X-prolyl aminopeptidase 3 (XPNPEP3) gene. In contrast to all known NPHP proteins, XPNPEP3 localizes to mitochondria of renal cells. However, in vivo analyses also revealed a likely cilia-related function; suppression of zebrafish xpnpep3 phenocopied the developmental phenotypes of ciliopathy morphants, and this effect was rescued by human XPNPEP3 that was devoid of a mitochondrial localization signal. Consistent with a role for XPNPEP3 in ciliary function, several ciliary cystogenic proteins were found to be XPNPEP3 substrates, for which resistance to N-terminal proline cleavage resulted in attenuated protein function in vivo in zebrafish. Our data highlight an emerging link between mitochondria and ciliary dysfunction, and suggest that further understanding the enzymatic activity and substrates of XPNPEP3 will illuminate novel cystogenic pathways.
