Global and local coordinates

This chapter described the global and local coordinate systems utilized in the formulation of spatial multibody systems. Global coordinate system is considered in the present work to denote the inertia frame. Additionally, body-fixed coordinate systems, also called local coordinate systems, are utilized to describe local properties of points that belong to a particular body. Furthermore, the process of transforming local coordinates into global coordinates is characterized by considering a transformation matrix. In the present work, Cartesian coordinates are utilized to locate the center of mass of each rigid body, as well as the location of any point that belongs to a body.

Gender in focus: (new) trends in media

Gender and media: where do we stand today?

Nowadays, the public discourses about gender equality are commonly accepted in Western society. In fact, we live in an era of “equality illusion” (Banyard, 2010) because the mainstream discourses incorporate gender in the agenda, conveying the message that feminist struggles are unnecessary today. At the same time, postfeminism (McRobbie, 2004) gains importance and demonstrates the intricacies of a neoliberal, highly individualist culture that subtly imprisons the freedoms that it is supposed to grant (Gill & Scharff, 2011). However, back in 1978, Gaye Tuchman used the expression “symbolic annihilation” to refer to how the media represented women. The author refers to a “symbolic annihilation” because sometimes it is so hidden and subtle that it becomes difficult to perceive – and to be fought. Much has improved since then; yet a lot remains the same. Over the past decades there have been marked changes in gender relations, in feminist activism, in the (media) communication industry and in society in general (Byerly, 2013; Carter, Steiner & McLaughlin, 2015; Gallagher, 2014; Gallego, 2013; Krijnen, Álvares & Van Bauwel, 2011; Krijnen & Van Bauwel, 2015; Lobo, Silveirinha, Subtil, & Torres, 2015; Ross, 2009; Silveirinha, 2001; Van Zoonen, 1994, 2010). Now, in a globalised and media saturated world, the gendered picture is, consequently, different. The contemporary grammar is marked by diverse and complex tensions (van Zoonen, 2010).

Media(ted) discourse and society: rethinking the framework of critical discourse analysis

The analysis of journalistic discourse and its social embeddedness has known significant advances in the last two decades, especially due to the emergence and development of Critical Discourse Analysis. However, three important aspects remain under-researched: the time plane in discourse analysis, the discursive strategies of social actors, and the extra- and supra-textual effects of mediated discourse. Firstly, understanding the biography of public matters requires a longitudinal examination of mediated texts and their social contexts but most forms of analysis of journalistic discourse do not account for the time sequence of texts and its implications. Secondly, as the media representation of social issues is, to a large extent, a function of the discursive construction of events, problems and positions by social actors, the discursive strategies that they employ in a variety of arenas and channels ‘‘before’’ and ‘‘after’’ journalistic texts need to be examined. Thirdly, the fact that many of the modes of operation of discourse are extra- or supra-textual calls for a consideration of various social processes ‘‘outside’’ the text. This paper aims to produce a theoretical and methodological contribution to the integration of these issues in discourse analysis by proposing a framework that combines a textual dimension with a contextual one

Este capítulo propõe-se traçar um retrato da actual situação da Educação para os Media no Ensino Superior em Portugal (público e privado), no que à vertente da formação diz respeito, tentando observar a evolução e as mudanças ocorridas ao longo da primeira década do século XXI. Pretende-se saber se os conteúdos de Educação para os Media estão presentes nos cursos de formação de professores, bem como noutros cursos; se a Educação para os Media integra unidades curriculares (UC) específicas, ou se os conteúdos relaciona-dos estão diluídos em UC´s mais genéricas; se tem presença obrigatória ou opcional; se a área faz parte do currículo formal ou se está integrada em actividades de investigação e/ou de formação, além de outros aspectos que sejam relevantes para a compreensão do quadro geral neste subsector.

Association between coronary artery atherosclerosis and the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery measured on ultrasonography

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery of patients with coronary artery disease is greater than that of individuals without that disease. METHODS: Case-control prospective study of prevalence assessing the thickness of the intima and media layers of 29 patients with coronary artery disease and 29 individuals without that disease by using ultrasonography of the carotid arteries. Diabetic patients and those with peripheral artery and cerebral vasculopathies were excluded from the study. RESULTS: The mean age was 51±7.5 years. Fifty-five per cent of the patients were males. Acute myocardial infarction was present in 62%; cardiac catheterization in 72%; saphenous bypass in 5%; and coronary angioplasty in 24%. The intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery in case patients and in control patients was, respectively, 0.81±0.25 mm and 0.62±0.18 mm (P=0.001). CONCLUSION: Intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery was significantly greater in patients with coronary artery disease.

La planificación estratégica de la localidad de Ischilín como un modelo estructurante microregional

El proyecto cierra una investigación tendiente a sustentar una intervención de Diseño Territorial que rescatase en su proceso al patrimonio cultural y paisajístico natural, configurándolo como un instrumento para su desarrollo humano sustentable, ordenamiento y resignificación de área de planificación, acentuando la identidad local y promoviendo un turismo de valores culturales y sociales. La primera etapa de la investigación (2002-2003), desarrolló estos contenidos como una Planificación Estratégica General de la Región Norte de Córdoba con una escala de aproximación de gran extensión. La segunda etapa (2004-2006) se centró en la planificación de un área testigo de escala media de aproximación donde se validasen las hipótesis propuestas para la protección ambiental, conservación del patrimonio natural y cultural, uso sustentable turístico del territorio y configuración de oportunidades de desarrollo humano con alta calidad de vida. La tercer etapa, la actual (2007 – 2008) en una escala de aproximación muy cercana y particularizada, consiste en la fundamentación de una legislación necesaria para todos los asentamientos urbanos del área, presentando al Poblado de Ischilín como modelo de una pieza componente síntesis que permita configurar un patrón metodológico replicante de autoorganización urbana, que sistematice al territorio del parque Regional Norte de Córdoba propuesto en el Programa de esta Investigación. Se presenta aquí al poblado de Ischilín como modelo de esta célula generadora, por las particulares condiciones de su contexto de inserción, las que posibilitan esta construcción y rol organizador territorial, inserto en la unidad regional a la que pertenece desde el punto de vista natural y cultural.
