Assessment and control of nanoparticles exposure in welding operations by use of a control banding tool

This paper describes the use of a Control Banding Tool to assess and further control of exposure of nanoparticles emitted during welding operations. The tool was applied to Metal Active Gas (MAG) arc welding of mild and stainless steel, providing semi-quantitative data on the process, so that protection measures could be derived, e.g. exhaust gas ventilation by hoods, local ventilation devices and containment measures. This tool is quite useful to compare and evaluate the characteristics of arc welding procedures so that more eco-friendly processes could be preferred over the more potentially noxious ones.

Não pretende este relatório inventar conceitos “nunca antes pensados” ou descobrir “soluções desconhecidas”, mas somente analisar e registar um determinado tipo de linguagem artística actual, que poderá ser inspiradora em determinados campos de criação artística, ou de elaboração escrita de uma determinada “forma de fazer” ou ainda apresentar sob o espectro do seu estudo uma série de ideias de variados autores que, antes e agora, compõem sobre matérias que fazem parte dos objectos artísticos aqui apresentados e que me trouxeram uma base de apoio importante para a fundamentação de conceitos por mim abordados, previamente de forma mais intuitiva, e à aproximação a um léxico facilitador da escrita dos fenómenos inerentes à prática artística.

Persistent organic pollutant levels in human visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue in obese individuals - Depot differences and dysmetabolism implications

Background: The role of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with endocrine disrupting activity in the aetiology of obesity and other metabolic dysfunctions has been recently highlighted. Adipose tissue (AT) is a common site of POPs accumulation where they can induce adverse effects on human health. Objectives: To evaluate the presence of POPs in human visceral (vAT) and subcutaneous (scAT) adipose tissue in a sample of Portuguese obese patients that underwent bariatric surgery, and assess their putative association with metabolic disruption preoperatively, as well as with subsequent body mass index (BMI) reduction. Methods: AT samples (n=189) from obese patients (BMI ≥35) were collected and the levels of 13 POPs were determined by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection (GC-ECD). Anthropometric and biochemical data were collected at the time of surgery. BMI variation was evaluated after 12 months and adipocyte size was measured in AT samples. Results: Our data confirm that POPs are pervasive in this obese population (96.3% of detection on both tissues), their abundance increasing with age (RS=0.310, p<0.01) and duration of obesity (RS=0.170, p<0.05). We observed a difference in AT depot POPs storage capability, with higher levels of ΣPOPs in vAT (213.9±204.2 compared to 155.1±147.4 ng/g of fat, p<0.001), extremely relevant when evaluating their metabolic impact. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between POP levels and the presence of metabolic syndrome components, namely dysglycaemia and hypertension, and more importantly with cardiovascular risk (RS=0.277, p<0.01), with relevance for vAT (RS=0.315, p<0.01). Finally, we observed an interesting relation of higher POP levels with lower weight loss in older patients. Conclusion: Our sample of obese subjects allowed us to highlight the importance of POPs stored in AT on the development of metabolic dysfunction in a context of obesity, shifting the focus to their metabolic effects and not only for their recognition as environmental obesogens.

Fazer uma história da própria vida. Narrativa pessoal e memória comunicativa em Paul Schatz im uhrenkasten

This essay offers a reflection on the concepts of identity and personal narrative, a line of argument that is closely interlaced with a subject‘s capacity to self-representation. As self-representation is necessarily composed upon remembrance processes, the question of memory as an element that directly influences the formation of an individual‘s identity becomes an emergent topic. Bearing this objective in mind, I shall highlight the notion of biographic continuity, the ability to elaborate a personal narrative, as an essential prerogative to attain a sense of identitary cohesion and coherence. On the other hand, I will argue that not only experienced memories play a key role in this process; intermediated, received narratives from the past, memories transmitted either symbolically or by elder members of the group or, what has been meanwhile termed ―postmemory‖, also influence the development of an individual‘s identitary map. This theoretical framework will be illustrated with the novel Paul Schatz im Uhrenkasten, written by German post-Holocaust author Jan Koneffke.

O conto aqui traduzido é um exemplo acabado de desconstrucionismo, sobretudo conseguido através da menorização do papel do narrador, constantemente desautorizado pelas personagens, que o interrompem e o contradizem. Assim, alguns segmentos aparentemente incongruentes não o são de facto. Na tarefa de tradução deste conto, mantivemos as características de descontrução do texto de partida, pelo que quaisquer aparentes incoerências são inerentes ao texto original e não erros de tradução.

Uma história de interior: argumento e guião

Este trabalho de desenvolvimento surge como complemento de uma história (argumento e guião) criada e desenvolvida, de maneira a ser filmada num futuro próximo. O meu projeto final, que me confere o grau de mestre, é pois, o desenvolvimento de um argumento e guião, apoiado num trabalho de pesquisa e desenvolvimento, que no seu todo, justifique a minha história. A minha história é muito particular porque está diretamente ligada com as minhas raízes, com a minha educação e com a forma como eu vejo o mundo. Para mim, a identidade cinematográfica, surge como um produto de um contexto cultural onde é concebida. Ou seja, esta obra, surge principalmente devido às minhas origens transmontanas, à forma como vejo aquela região e como a destaco da vida citadina. A cultura daquela região é uma cultura essencialmente portuguesa. É uma cultura que identifica um país, através de um produto internacionalmente comercializado, o vinho do Porto. Procurei enquadrar este trabalho, com as tendências do cinema português contemporâneo. Procurei perceber o que foi filmado, escrito e imortalizado sobre aquela região - a minha região. Através de uma pesquisa sobre a história do cinema português e suas principais mudanças, consegui evidenciar tudo aquilo que particularmente me influenciou ao longo deste desenvolvimento.

Rheo-optical characterization of liquid crystalline acetoxypropylcellulose melt undergoing large shear flow and relaxation after flow cessation

The rheological and structural characteristics of acetoxypropylcellulose (APC) nematic melt are studied at shear rates ranging from 10 s(-1) to 1000 s(-1) which are relevant to extrusion based processes. APC shows a monotonic shear thinning behavior over the range of shear rates tested. The negative extrudate-swell shows a minimum when a critical shear rate (gamma) over dot(c) is reached. For shear rates smaller than (gamma) over dot(c), the flow-induced texture consists of two set of bands aligned parallel and normal to the flow direction. At shear rates larger than (gamma) over dot(c), the flow induced texture is reminiscent of a 2 fluids structure. Close to the shearing walls, domains elongated along the flow direction and stacked along the vorticity are imaged with POM, whereas SALS patterns indicate that the bulk of the sheared APC is made of elliptical domains oriented along the vorticity. No full nematic alignment is achieved at the largest shear rate tested. Below (gamma) over dot(c), the stress relaxation is described by a stretched exponential. Above (gamma) over dot(c), the stress relaxation is described by a fast and a slow process. The latter coincides with the growth of normal bands thicknesses, as the APC texture after flow cessation consists of two types of bands with parallel and normal orientations relative to the flow direction. Both bands thicknesses do not depend on the applied shear rate, in contrast to their orientation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
