Hierarchical approach to timing verification in CMOS VLSI design

This paper describes a novel hierarchical approach to timing verification. Four types of relationship existing among signal paths are distinguished, based on a classification of the degree of interdependency in the circuit. In this way, irrelevant path delays can be excluded through consideration of the interaction between critical paths and others. Furthermore, under suitable conditions, bounded delay values for large hierarchical systems can be deduced using bounded delays determined for their constituent cells. Finally, we discuss the impact on design strategy of the hierarchical delay model presented in this paper.

Kinetics of the chemical looping oxidation of H2 by a co-precipitated mixture of CuO and Al2O3

Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) has the inherent property of separating CO2 from flue gases. Instead of air, it uses an oxygen-carrier, usually in the form of a metal oxide, to provide oxygen for combustion. When used for the combustion of gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, or synthesis gas from the gasification of coal, the technique gives a stream of CO2 which, on an industrial scale, would be sufficiently pure for geological sequestration. An important issue is the form of the metal oxide, since it must retain its reactivity through many cycles of complete reduction and oxidation. Here, we report on the rates of oxidation of one constituent of synthesis gas, H2, by co-precipitated mixtures of CuO+Al2O3 using a laboratory-scale fluidised bed. To minimise the influence of external mass transfer, and also of errors in the measurement of [H2], particles sized to 355-500μm were used at low [H2], with the temperature ranging from 450 to 900°C. Under such conditions, the reaction was slow enough for meaningful measurements of the intrinsic kinetics to be made. The reaction was found to be first order with respect to H2. Above ∼800°C, the reaction of CuO was fast and conformed to the shrinking core mechanism, proceeding via the intermediate, Cu2O, in: 2CuO+H2→Cu2O+H2O, ΔH1073 K0=- 116.8 kJ/mol; Cu2O+H2→2Cu+H2O, ΔH1073 K0-80.9 kJ/mol. After oxidation of the products Cu and Cu2O back to CuO, the kinetics in subsequent cycles of chemical looping oxidation of H2 could be approximated by those in the first. Interestingly, the carrier was found to react at temperatures as low as 300°C. The influence of the number of cycles of reduction and oxidation is explored. Comparisons are drawn with previous work using reduction by CO. Finally, these results indicate that the kinetics of reaction of the oxygen carrier with gasifier synthesis gases is very much faster than rates of gasification of the original fuel. © 2010 The Institution of Chemical Engineers.

El juego anidado de la reforma constitucional argentina

Resumen: El presente trabajo aspira a explicar la dinámica vivida por el proceso que condujo a la reforma constitucional de 1994 en la Argentina, en especial a la sucesión de acontecimientos que culminaron en la celebración del Pacto de Olivos y la sanción de la ley de necesidad de la reforma en 1993. ¿Por qué la Unión Cívica Radical y el Partido Justicialista optaron por celebrar un pacto en el proceso reformista, que podría considerarse un resultado subóptimo, en lugar de conducir cada uno su estrategia dominante: resistir la reforma o promoverla a toda costa? Observado como un “juego anidado”, el proceso que llevó a la reforma, lejos de ser un resultado subóptimo, fue un juego que se desarrolló simultáneamente en tres arenas. Desde esta posición, el trabajo discute la extendida tesis de que el proceso de reforma fue un clásico “juego del gallina”.

Rotation Numbers Of Invariant Manifolds Around Unstable Periodic Orbits For The Diamagnetic Kepler Problem

In this paper, a method to construct topological template in terms of symbolic dynamics for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed. To confirm the topological template, rotation numbers of invariant manifolds around unstable periodic orbits in a phase space are taken as an object of comparison. The rotation numbers are determined from the definition and connected with symbolic sequences encoding the periodic orbits in a reduced Poincare section. Only symbolic codes with inverse ordering in the forward mapping can contribute to the rotation of invariant manifolds around the periodic orbits. By using symbolic ordering, the reduced Poincare section is constricted along stable manifolds and a topological template, which preserves the ordering of forward sequences and can be used to extract the rotation numbers, is established. The rotation numbers computed from the topological template are the same as those computed from their original definition.

A method to find unstable periodic orbits for the diamagnetic Kepler problem

A method to determine the admissibility of symbolic sequences and to find the unstable periodic orbits corresponding to allowed symbolic sequences for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed by using the ordering of stable and unstable manifolds. By investigating the unstable periodic orbits up to length 6, a one to one correspondence between the unstable periodic orbits and their corresponding symbolic sequences is shown under the system symmetry decomposition.

La idea de “Nación” en el lenguaje político hispanoamericano, 1808-1814 : los límites monárquicos de la imaginación liberal

Resumen: Este trabajo aborda el concepto de Nación y otros relacionados con la noción de soberanía en el lenguaje político hispanoamericano para el período 1808-1814. Se analizan algunos trabajos que dan cuenta de los diversos significados asociados a este concepto en los procesos revolucionarios americano y español. Las distintas concepciones sostenidas por los actores sociales del período señalado se vinculan luego en perspectiva con su posible derivación como proyección de la Nación en la cultura constituyente de Cádiz.

Microstructural evolution and formation of nanocrystalline intermetallic compound during surface mechanical attrition treatment of cobalt

Nanocrystalline intermetallic Co3Fe7 was produced on the surface of cobalt via surface mechanical attrition (SMA). Deformationinduced diffusion entailed the formation of a series of solid solutions. Phase transitions occurred depending on the atomic fraction of Fe in the surface solid solutions: from hexagonal close-packed (<4% Fe) to face-centered cubic (fcc) (4-11% Fe), and from fcc to body-centered cubic (>11% Fe). Nanoscale compositional probing suggested significantly higher Fe contents at grain boundaries and triple junctions than grain interiors. Short-circuit diffusion along grain boundaries and triple junctions dominate in the nanocrystalline intermetallic compound. Stacking faults contribute significantly to diffusion. Diffusion enhancement due to high-rate deformation in SMA was analyzed by regarding dislocations as solute-pumping channels, and the creation of excess vacancies. Non-equilibrium, atomic level alloying can then be ascribed to deformation-induced intermixing of constituent species. The formation mechanism of nanocrystalline intermetallic grains on the SMA surface can be thought of as a consequence of numerous nucleation events and limited growth. (C) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. De las relaciones entre la estructura de las emociones, los discursos mediáticos y la denominada “inseguridad” : un análisis posible del tratamiento mediático del “Caso Candela”

Resumen: Este artículo se propone problematizar el tratamiento mediático del denominado “Caso Candela”, situando este en el marco de una construcción social del miedo y la inseguridad. A través de una mirada que privilegie una estructura social de las emociones y percepciones, procuramos analizar y describir los resortes afectivos que, desde diferentes lugares y posicionamientos, brindan sostén a este tratamiento mediático. Consideramos necesario explicitar que este trabajo no apunta a discutir éticamente el rol de los medios en estos procesos. Buscaremos comprender y analizar la incidencia y el impacto del tratamiento mediático en cuestión en la estructura social de emociones y percepciones. Nos proponemos, a su vez, desarrollar cómo este tratamiento se apoya en una particular configuración de las estructuras de las emociones y, al mismo tiempo, es parte constitutiva de su funcionamiento

Teorías de elección racional : el caso del Frente Amplio y las plantas de celulosa

El presente artículo hace foco sobre la campaña electoral del Frente Amplio de 2004, y busca determinar en qué medida las estrategias electorales adoptadas impactaron sobre la forma en que esa fuerza política se definió, a lo largo de ella, acerca de la posible instalación de dos plantas de celulosa en las cercanías de Fray Bentos. En ese sentido, se afirma que se habrían implementado dos estrategias complementarias. Por un lado, una moderación de posiciones con el fin de ampliar la tradicional base electoral de izquierda. Por otro lado, una estrategia de indefinición frente a determinadas cuestiones con el fin de no activar diversas contradicciones internas. Este rumbo de acción fue el escogido frente a la cuestión de las plantas de celulosa. La ausencia de una postura oficial permitió que los distintos elementos constituyentes de la coalición se expidieran libremente sobre la cuestión. Si bien eran mayoritarios los sectores favorables a los emprendimientos, sus detractores sostendrían un papel mucho más activo, dando posteriormente lugar a interpretaciones erróneas acerca de la posición asumida por el Frente Amplio a lo largo del período estudiado.

A participação feminina na construção de um parlamento democrático

Analisa a participação feminina na conquista da cidadania brasileira perante a Assembleia Constituinte de 1933 e a Assembleia Nacional Constituinte de 1987. Os dados foram coletados nos volumes do Diário do Congresso Nacional de 1933 e no portal do Congresso Nacional - Constituição 20 anos. Descreve o que foi consolidado como direitos para as mulheres. O estudo concluiu que há uma discrepância entre a norma constitucional vigente e as práticas sociais na realidade da mulher brasileira.

A construção da imagem de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a partir dos seus discursos na Assembleia Nacional Constituinte

Objetiva estudar os eixos que atuam na construção da imagem de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva por meio de seus discursos em plenário na Assembléia Nacional Constituinte, no período entre 1987 e 1988, utilizando-se da técnica da análise do discurso. Atenção especial é dada à análise das falas no "palco" e a representação política do personagem.

La cuenca del Salado: uso y posibilidades de sus recursos pesqueros.

The fishing resources of the Salado Basin are extraordinary important in the context of the inland waters of Argentina. However, the diversity of landscapes in the basin and the lack of continuity in the regional planning , have made difficult a proper management of the fishing resources. This paper has a general overview of the main aspects related to the fishing fauna of the region, with a natural point of view of the processes and mechanisms of the management. A description of the fishes basin community and the identification of the species with commercial and game interests is included . We describe the different fishing gears used in the province for game, commercial and scientific fishing. We review the criteria of diagnosis of the silver side population as a main resource of fishing interest and under this point of view we propose new outlooks to promote a proper management of the resources and its sustainable use. We identify the different kinds of fisheries that are common in the basin and we make a survey of the related socioeconomic aspects. Moreover, we analyze the development of a new institutional and regulatory frame in order to optimize the management of the fishing resources. Finally, we define criteria for ordering and conserving such resources and identify conflict points and requirements for its sustainable use in the context of new proposals for the public policies.

Generating cluster submodels from a multistage stochastic mixed integer optimization model using break stage

We present a scheme to generate clusters submodels with stage ordering from a (symmetric or a nonsymmetric one) multistage stochastic mixed integer optimization model using break stage. We consider a stochastic model in compact representation and MPS format with a known scenario tree. The cluster submodels are built by storing first the 0-1 the variables, stage by stage, and then the continuous ones, also stage by stage. A C++ experimental code has been implemented for reordering the stochastic model as well as the cluster decomposition after the relaxation of the non-anticipativiy constraints until the so-called breakstage. The computational experience shows better performance of the stage ordering in terms of elapsed time in a randomly generated testbed of multistage stochastic mixed integer problems.

Population dynamics of the anchoveta, Cetengraulis mysticetus, in the Gulf of Panama, as determined by tagging experiments

ENGLISH: The anchoveta is the major constituent of the important bait and reduction fisheries of the Gulf of Panama. It is a short-lived species, the great majority of the catch consisting of fish in their first year of life. Fish for reduction are caught chiefly in the Isla Verde area, between Punta Chame and the entrance of the Panama Canal. In 1960 and 1961 anchovetas were tagged with metal internal tags and released in the major areas of occurrence of this species. The tags were recovered from the meal in the reduction plants with magnets. From the 53,380 fish tagged in 1960, 745 tags were returned during the 1960 season, 246 during the 1961 season, and 8 during the 1962 season. From the 113,202 tagged in 1961, 373 tags were returned during the 1961 season and 48 during the 1962 season. Complete catch statistics are available, and length-frequency and length-weight data were used to convert these from pounds to numbers of fish of each year class. The annual survival rate for the fish of the 1959 year class in the Isla Verde area was estimated to be 0.086 by the Chapman-Robson method, 0.102 by the year-class method, and 0.088 by the Jackson positive method. The first method is considered to give the best estimate. Six estimates of the population of fish of the 1959 year class in the Isla Verde area were obtained from the sample tag ratios of six experiments conducted in that area in 1960. The estimates differed due to the temporal decrease in the population, but the downward trend corresponded fairly well to what was expected from the total annual mortality rate. It was estimated that the population of 1959-year class fish was about 818 million on March 8, 1960, and about 70 million on March 8, 1961. As the population of anchovetas decreases during the season the effort increases sufficiently that the catch remains roughly constant. This is described as the "constant absolute catch" type fishery. Of the original population of fish in the Isla Verde area at the beginning of the 1960 season, about 11 per cent were caught and 81 per cent died of natural causes. Evaluation of growth and mortality data demonstrated that beginning the fishery for the youngest age group later than March 8 (the date it began in 1960) would reduce the yield per recruit, while increasing the fishing effort would greatly increase it. Further, it is believed unlikely that increases in the catch in the Isla Verde area alone would noticeably decrease the number of recruits to that area. Therefore there is no foreseeable need for regulation of the fishery. SPANISH: El principal constituyente de la importante pesquería para carnada y para reducción en el Golfo de Panamá es la anchoveta. Es una especie de vida corta cuya pesca, en su mayor parte, está constituida por peces que se encuentran en su primer año de vida. Para la industria de reducción los peces son capturados principalmente en el área de Isla Verde, entre Punta Chame y la entrada del Canal de Panamá. En 1960 y 1961 las anchovetas fueron marcadas con marcas metálicas internas y liberadas en las áreas más importantes en que se encuentra esta especie. Las marcas fueron recobradas de la harina en las plantas de reducción por medio de magnetos. De los 53,380 peces marcados en 1960, fueron devueltas 745 marcas durante la temporada pesquera de 1960, 246 durante la de 1961, y 8 durante la de 1962. De los 113,202 marcados en 1961, 373 marcas fueron devueltas durante la temporada pesquera de 1961 y 48 durante la de 1962. Se dispone de estadísticas completas de captura, y los datos de frecuencia-longitud y de longitud-peso fueron usados para convertir éstos de libras a números de peces de cada clase anual. La tasa anual de supervivencia correspondiente a la clase anual de 1959 en el área de Isla Verde estimó en 0.086 por medio del método Chapman-Robson; en 0.102 por método de la clase anual; y en 0.088 por el método positivo de Jackson. Se considera que el primer método dé la mejor estimación. Seis estimaciones de la población de peces de la clase anual 1959 en el área de Isla Verde fueron obtenidas según la proporción de marcas halladas en las muestras correspondientes a seis experimentos efectuados en aquella área en 1960. Las estimaciones variaron debido a la disminución temporal de la población, pero esta tendencia descendente correspondió bastante bien a lo que se esperaba según la tasa total de mortalidad anual. Se estimó que la población de peces de la clase anual de 1959 era de unos 818 millones el 8 de marzo de 1960, y aproximadamente de unos 70 millones el 8 de marzo de 1961. Conforme a que la población de anchovetas disminuye durante la temporada pesquera, el esfuerzo aumenta lo suficientemente como para que la pesca se mantenga más o menos constante. Este es el tipo de pesquería descrito como de "captura absoluta constante". De la población original de peces en el área de Isla Verde al comienzo de la temporada pesquera de 1960, cerca del 11 por ciento fue capturada y el 81 por ciento murió por causas naturales. La evaluación de los datos del crecimiento mortalidad demostraron que al comenzar la pesquería a explotar grupo de edad más joven en una fecha posterior al 8 de marzo (la fecha en que comenzó en 1960) se reduciría el rendimiento por recluta, mientras que al aumentar el esfuerzo de pesca lo aumentaría considerablemente. Más aún, se cree improbable que el aumento en la pesca en el área de Isla Verde de por sí disminuyera perceptiblemente el número de reclutas en esa área.
