In the central part of the Delft railway tunnel project, an underground railway station is being built at very close distance to the existing station building, which is still in operation. Although elaborate sensitivity analyses were made, some unforeseen deformations were encountered during the first phases of the execution process. Especially the installation of temporary sheet pile walls as well as the installation of a huge amount of grout anchor piles resulted in deformations exceeding the predicted final deformations as well as the boundary values defined by a level I limiting tensile strain method (LTSM) approach. In order to ensure the execution process, supplementary analyses were made to predict future deformations, and this for multiple cross sections. These deformations were implemented into a finite element model of the masonry of the building in order to define probable crack formation. This Level II LTSM approach made it possible to increase the initially foreseen deformation criteria and the continuation of the works. Design steps, design models and monitoring results will be explained within this paper.

Underground constructions in soft ground may lead to settlement damage to existing buildings. In The Netherlands the situation is particularly complex, because of the combination of soft soil, fragile pile foundations and brittle, unreinforced masonry façades. The tunnelling design process in urban areas requires a reliable risk damage assessment. In the engineering practice the current preliminary damage assessment is based on the limiting tensile strain method (LTSM). Essentially this is an uncoupled analysis, in which the building is modelled as an elastic beam subject to imposed Greenfield settlements and the induced tensile strains are compared with a limit value for the material. The soil-structure interaction is included only as a ratio between the soil and the building stiffness. In this paper, a coupled approach is evaluated. The soil-structure interaction in terms of normal and shear behaviour is represented by interface elements and a cracking model for masonry is included. This project aims to improve the existing damage classification system for masonry buildings subjected to tunnel-induced settlement, in order to evaluate the necessity of strengthening techniques or mitigation measures.

This paper describes part of the monitoring undertaken at Abbey Mills shaft F, one of the main shafts of Thames Water's Lee tunnel project in London, UK. This shaft, with an external diameter of 30 m and 73 m deep, is one of the largest ever constructed in the UK and consequently penetrates layered and challenging ground conditions (Terrace Gravel, London Clay, Lambeth Group, Thanet Sand Formation, Chalk Formation). Three out of the twenty 1-2 m thick and 84 m deep diaphragm wall panels were equipped with fibre optic instrumentation. Bending and circumferential hoop strains were measured using Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry and analysis technologies. These measurements showed that the overall radial movement of the wall was very small. Prior to excavation during a dewatering trial, the shaft may have experienced three-dimensional deformation due to differential water pressures. During excavation, the measured hoop and bending strains of the wall in the chalk exceeded the predictions. This appears to be related to the verticality tolerances of the diaphragm wall and lower circumferential hoop stiffness of the diaphragm walls at deep depths. The findings from this case study provide valuable information for future deep shafts in London. © ICE Publishing: All rights reserved.

Four filamentous cyanobacteria, Microcoleus vaginatus, Phormidium tenue, Scytonema javanicum (Kutz.) and Nostoc sp., and a single-celled green alga, Desmococcus olivaceus, all isolated from Shapotou (Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China), were batch cultured and inoculated onto unconsolidated sand in greenhouse and field experiments. Their ability to reduce wind erosion in sands was quantified by using a wind tunnel laboratory. The major factors related to cohesion of algal crusts, such as biomass, species, species combinations, bioactivity, niche, growth phase of algae, moisture, thickness of the crusts, dust accretion (including dust content and manner of dust added) and other cryptogams (lichens, fungi and mosses) were studied. The best of the five species were M. vaginatus and P. tenue, while the best mix was a blend of 80% M. vaginatus and 5% each of P. tenue, S. javanicum, Nostoc sp. and D. olivaceus. The threshold friction velocity was significantly increased by the presence of all of the cyanobacterial species, while the threshold impact velocity was notably increased only by the filamentous species. Thick crusts were less easily eroded than thin crusts, while biomass was more effective than thickness. Dust was incorporated best into Microcoleus crust when added in small amounts over time, and appeared to increase growth of the cyanobacterium as well as strengthen the cohesion of the crust. Microbial crust cohesion was mainly attributed to algal aggregation, while lichens, fungi and mosses affected more the soil structure and physico-chemical properties.

34-, 17-, 4-, 1.5-year old natural algal crusts were collected from Shapotou Scientific Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 40-day old field and greenhouse artificial algal crusts were in situ developed in the same sandy soil and the same place (37degrees27'N, 104degrees57'E). Their different cohesions both against wind force and pressure were measured respectively by a sandy wind-tunnel experiment and a penetrometer. On the basis of these algal crusts, the cementing mechanism was revealed from many subjects and different levels. The results showed that in the indoor artificial crusts with the weakest cohesion bunchy algal filaments were distributed in the surface of the crusts, produced few extracellular polymers (EPS), the binding capacity of the crusts just accomplished by mechanical bundle of algal filaments. For field crusts, most filaments grew toward the deeper layers of algal crusts, secreted much more EPS, and when organic matter content was more than 2.4 times of chlorophyll a, overmuch organic matter (primarily is EPS) began to gather onto the surface of the crusts and formed an organic layer in the relatively lower micro-area, and this made the crust cohesion increase 2.5 times. When the organic layer adsorbed and intercepted amounts of dusts, soil particles and sand grains scattered down from wind, it changed gradually into an inorganic layer in which inorganic matter dominated, and this made the crusts cohesion further enhanced 2-6 times. For crust-building species Microcoleus vaginatus, 88.5% of EPS were the acidic components, 78% were the acidic proteglycan of 380 kD. The uronic acid content accounted for 8% of proteglycan, and their free carboxyls were important sites of binding with metal cations from surrounding matrix.

Current fluctuations can provide additional insight into quantum transport in mesoscopic systems. The present work is carried out for the fluctuation properties of transport through a pair of coupled quantum dots which are connected with ferromagnetic electrodes. Based on an efficient particle-number-resolved master equation approach, we are concerned with not only fluctuations of the total charge and spin currents, but also of each individual spin-dependent component. As a result of competition among the spin polarization, Coulomb interaction, and dot-dot tunnel coupling, rich behaviors are found for the self- and mutual-correlation functions of the spin-dependent currents.

This paper proposes a novel single-electron multiple-valued memory. It is a metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOS)-type memory with multiple separate control gates and floating gate layer, which consists of nano-crystal grains. The electron can tunnel among the grains (floating gates) and between the floating gate layer and the MOS channel. The memory can realize operations of 'write', 'store' and 'erase' of multiple-valued signals exceeding three values by controlling the single electron tunneling behavior. We use Monte Carlo method to simulate the operation of single-electron four-valued memory. The simulation results show that it can operate well at room temperature.

We have investigated the transient electroluminescence (EL) onset of the double-layer light-emitting devices made from poly(N-vinylcarbozole) (PVK) doped with 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) and tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminium (Alq(3)). For the double-layered device in which PVK was doped with 0.1 wt% DCJTB, the EL onset of PVK lags that of DCJTB and Alq(3), while the EL onset of DCJTB and Alq(3) is simultaneous. However, the EL emission of the double-layered device of PVK/Alq(3) originates only from Alq(3). The results show that DCJTB dopants can not only help to tunnel electrons from Alq(3) zone to PVK but can also assist electrons transfer in PVK under high electric field by hopping between DCJTB molecules or from DCJTB to PVK sites at a low doping concentration of 0.1 wt%. When the DCJTB doping concentration is 4.0 wt%, the EL onset of Alq(3) lags that of DCJTB. The difference in the EL onsets of DCJTB, Alq(3) and PVK is attributed to the slow build-up of the internal space charge in the vicinity of the interface between PVK and Alq(3). The electron potential difference of the interface between Alq(3) and PVK doped by DCJTB can be adjusted by changing the DCJTB doping concentration in double-layer devices.

We investigate the spin polarized current through a quantum dot connected to ferromagnetic leads in the presence of a finite spin-dependent chemical potential. The effects of the spin polarization of the leads p and the external magnetic field B are studied. It is found that both the magnitude and the symmetry of the current are dependent on the spin polarization of the leads. When the two ferromagnetic leads are in parallel configuration, the spin polarization p has an insignificant effect on the spin current, and an accompanying charge current appears with the increase of p. When the leads are in antiparallel configuration, however, the effect of p is distinct. The charge current is always zero regardless of the variation of p in the absence of B. The peaks appearing in the pure spin current are greatly suppressed and become asymmetric as p is increased. The applied magnetic field B results in an accompanying charge current in both the parallel and antiparallel configurations of the leads. The characteristics of the currents are explained in terms of the density of states of the quantum dot.

We study electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a noninteracting quantum dot in each of its arms. Both a magnetic flux phi threading through the AB ring and the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction inside the two dots are taken into account. Due to the existence of the SO interaction, the electrons flowing through different arms of the AB ring will acquire a spin-dependent phase factor in the tunnel-coupling strengths. This phase factor, as well as the influence of the magnetic flux, will induce various interesting interference phenomena. We show that the conductance and the local density of states can become spin polarized by tuning the magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction strength. Under certain circumstances, a pure spin-up or spin-down conductance can be obtained when a spin-unpolarized current is injected from the external leads. Therefore, the electron spin can be manipulated by adjusting the Rashba spin-orbit strength and the structure parameters. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

A Monte Carlo simulation on the basis of quantum trajectory approach is carried out for the measurement dynamics of a single-electron spin resonance. The measured electron, which is confined in either a quantum dot or a defect trap, is tunnel coupled to a side reservoir and continuously monitored by a mesoscopic detector. The simulation not only recovers the observed telegraphic signal of detector current, but also predicts unique features in the output power spectrum which are associated with electron dynamics in different regimes.

We demonstrate tunnel magnetoresistance junctions based on a trilayer system consisting of an epitaxial NiMnSb, an aluminum oxide, and a CoFe trilayer. The junctions show a tunneling magnetoresistance of Delta R/R of 8.7% at room temperature which increases to 14.7% at 4.2 K. The layers show a clear separate switching and a small ferromagnetic coupling. A uniaxial in-plane anisotropy in the NiMnSb layer leads to different switching characteristics depending on the direction in which the magnetic field is applied, an effect which can be used for sensor applications. The reverse I(V) measurement and analytic calculation of the electron transport across a Ti/6H-SiC Schottky barrier are presented. Based on the consideration of the barrier fluctuations and the barrier height shift caused by image charge and the applied voltage drop across Ti/SiC interfical layer, a comprehensive analytical model for the reverse tunneling current is developed using a WKB calculation of the tunneling probability through a reverse biased Schottky barrier. This model takes into account the main reverse conduction mechanism, such as field emission, thermionic field emission and thermionic emission. The fact that the simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental data indicates that the barrier height shift and barrier fluctuation can lead to reverse current densities orders of magnitude higher than that obtained from a simple theory. It is shown that the field and thermionic field emission processes, in which carries can tunnel through the barrier but cannot surmount it with insufficient thermal energy, dominate the reverse characteristics of a SiC Schottky contacts in a normal working condition.

When an intersubband relaxation is involved in vertical transport in a tunneling heterostructure, the magnetic suppression of the intersubband LO or LA phonon scattering may also give rise to a noticeable depression of the resonant tunneling current, unrelated to the Coulomb correlation effect. The slowdown of the intersubband scattering rate makes fewer electrons able to tunnel resonantly between two adjacent quantum wells (QWs) in a three-barrier, two-well heterostructure. The influence of the magnetic field on the intersubband relaxation can be studied in an explicit way by a physical model based on the dynamics of carrier populations in the ground and excited subbands of the incident QW. Visible photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra of Ge clusters embedded in porous silicon (PS) have been studied. The as-prepared sample shows redshifted and enhanced room temperature PL relative to reference PS. This result can be explained by the quantum confinement effect on excitons in Ge clusters and tunnel of excitons from Si units of the PS skeleton to Ge clusters. One year storage in dry air results in a pronounced decrease in PL intensity but blue-shifted in contrast to reference PS. This phenomenon correlates to the size decrease of macerated Ce clusters and occurrence of "quantum depletion" in Ge clusters. Consequently, only excitons in Si units contribute to PL.
