As our nation’s highway system continues to age, asphalt maintenance and rehabilitation techniques have become increasingly important. The deterioration of pavement over time is inevitable. Preventive maintenance is a strategy to extend the serviceable life of a pavement by applying cost-effective treatments that slow the deterioration of pavement and extend its usable life. Thin maintenance surfaces (TMSs) are preventive maintenance techniques that can effectively prolong the life of pavement when applied at an opportune time. Common TMSs include bituminous fog seal, bituminous seal coat, slurry seal, cold in-place recycling (CIR), and micro-surfacing. This research project investigated ways to improve Iowa Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS) and Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) documents regarding asphalt roadway maintenance and rehabilitation. Researchers led an effort to review and help ensure that the documents supporting proper selection, design, and construction for asphalt maintenance and rehabilitation techniques reflect the latest research findings on these processes: seal coating, slurry sealing, micro-surfacing, and fog sealing. Full results of this investigation are included in this report and its appendices. This report also presents a summary of the recommendations based on the study results.

This research project strives to help the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) fully achieve the full benefits of pavement preservation through training on proper selection, design, and application of pavement preservation treatments. In some cases, there is a lack of training when conducting one of these steps and the objective of applying pavement preservation techniques is compromised. Extensive amounts of literature on pavement preservation exist, but a structured approach on how to train staff in selecting, designing, and applying pavement preservation techniques is lacking. The objective of this project was to develop a training-oriented learning management system to address pavement preservation treatments (chip seals, fog seals, slurry systems, and crack seals and fills) as they are dealt with during the phases of selection, design, and construction. Early in the project, it was critical to identify the staff divisions to be trained and the treatments to be included. Through several meetings with the Iowa DOT, three staff divisions were identified: maintenance staff (in charge of selection), design staff, and construction staff. In addition, the treatments listed above were identified as the focus of the study due to their common use. Through needs analysis questionnaires and meetings, the knowledge gap and training needs of the agency were identified. The training modules developed target the gap from the results of the needs analysis. The concepting (selection) training focuses on providing the tools necessary to help make proper treatment selection. The design training focuses on providing the information necessary on the treatment materials (mostly binders and aggregates) and how to make proper material selection. Finally, the construction training focuses on providing equipment calibration procedures, inspection responsibilities, and images of poor and best practices. The research showed that it is important to train each division staff (maintenance, design, and construction) separately, as each staff division has its own needs and interests. It was also preferred that each treatment was covered on an individual basis. As a result of the research, it is recommended to evaluate the performance of pavement preservation treatments pre- and post-training continuously to compare results and verify the effectiveness of the learning management system.

The foamed asphalt concept has been around since the 1950's. Rising oil prices have created a renewed interest in this process. The purpose of this project was to construct an asphalt base using the foamed asphalt process and to evaluate its performance. A 4.2 mile length of Muscatine County road A-91 was selected for the research project. Asphalt contents of 4.5% and 5.5%, moisture contents of 70% and 90% of optimum, and fog, single chip, and double chip seal coats were used in various combinations to lay 9 test sections of 4-inch foamed asphalt base. After five years of service and evaluation, several conclusions can be made concerning the performance of the foamed asphalt bases: (1) the foamed asphalt process can work as shown by the excellent performance of Sections 2 and 3; (2) foamed asphalt base requires a well compacted subgrade and a road profile suitable for good drainage of water--test section failures were mostly due to a poor subgrade and subsurface moisture; and (3) when the base is placed in two or more lifts, extreme care must be exercised to insure adequate bonding is achieved between lifts. Any future research with foamed asphalt should include various asphalt depths in order to determine a thickness/strength relationship for foamed asphalt.

Currently, many drivers experience some difficulty in viewing the road ahead of them during times of reduced visibility, such as rain, snow, fog, or the darkness of night- Recent studies done by the National Safety Council provide a detailed contrast between fatal accidents occurring during the day and night. Revealed was that the motor vehicle night death rate (4.41 deaths per 100 million miles driven) was sharply higher than the corresponding death rate during daylight hours (1.21). By providing a delineating system powered by the natural resource of solar power, a constant source of visibility may be maintained throughout the evening. Along with providing enough light to trace the outline of the road, other major goals defined in producing this delineator system are as follows: 1. A strong and durable design that would protect the internal components and survive extreme weather conditions. 2. A low maintenance system where components need few repairs or replacements. 3. A design which makes all components accessible in the event that maintenance is needed, but also prevents vandalism. 4. A design that provides greater visibility to drivers and will not harm a vehicle or its passengers in the event of a collision. This solar powered highway delineator consists of an adjustable solar array, a light fixture, and a standard delineator pole. The solar array houses and protects the solar panels, and can be easily adjusted to obtain a maximum amount of sunlight. The light fixture primarily houses the battery, the circuit and the light assembly. Both components allow for easy accessibility and reduce vandalism using internal connections for bolts and wires. The delineator mounting pole is designed to extensively deform in the event of a collision, therefore reducing any harm caused to the vehicle and/or the passengers. The cost of a single prototype to be produced is approximately $70.00 excluding labor costs. However, these material and labor costs will be greatly reduced if a large number of delineators are produced. It is recommended that the Iowa Department of Transportation take full advantage of the research and development put into this delineator design. The principles used in creating this delineator can be used to provide an outline for drivers to follow, or on a larger scale, provide actual roadway lighting in areas where it was never before possible or economically feasible. In either event, the number of fatal accidents will be decreased due to the improved driver visibility in the evening.

Friction testing of pavements has been a continuing effort by the Iowa Department of Transportation since 1969. This report details results of tests of asphaltic concrete pavements on the primary and interstate road systems. Both sprinkle treated and non-sprinkle treated pavements placed between 1975 - 1985 are included. A total of 1785 miles representing 216 separate paving projects were examined. The effect of fog sealing sprinkle treated pavements was studied by testing friction levels before and after the application of the fog seals. Conclusions of the report are: 1. Current aggregate selection criteria for a.c. pavement surface courses provides adequate friction levels through 10 years and should remain effective through a 15 year design life. 2. Sprinkle treatment of pavements has, for the most part, provided macrotexture in the pavement surface as evidenced by smooth tire testing. 3. Fog sealing sprinkle treated pavements does not significantly alter the friction properties.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää spraytärkkelyksen ja eri kerrosten liitossakeuksien vaikutusta kartongin palstautumislujuuteen ja formaatioon. Työn teon aikana viiraosille hankittiin gammasäteilyllä toimivat kosteusmittarit. Työssä haettiin keinoja varmentaa mit-tausten luotettavuus kartonkikoneella, jonka nopeudet ja tuotteiden neliömassat vaihtelevat suuresti. Työn loppuvaiheessa aloitettiin mittareiden toiminnan parantaminen. Spraytärk-kelyksen annostelua parannettiin ja annostelulle rakennettiin suhdesäätö. Tärkkisumun aiheuttamia haittoja vähennettiin lisäämällä spraytärkkelysputkien yhteyteen tärkkelys-tippoja poistavia imupalkkeja. Tämän diplomityön kirjallisuusosan tavoitteena oli tarkastella taivekartonkia tuotteena ja sen kilpailukyvyn kannalta tärkeitä ominaisuuksia. Kilpailukyvyn kannalta tärkeään palstautumislujuuteen sekä taivutusjäykkyyteen kiinnitettiin huomiota niiden toisistaan riippuvuuksien vuoksi. Spraytärkkelyksen käyttö riittävän palstautumislujuuden varmistajana ja spraytärkkelyksen määrän hallinta olivat kirjallisuusosassa mukana. Liitossakeuksien hallinta gammasäteilyä hyödyntävien NDC-mittareiden avulla oli toinenpääalue. Kirjallisuusosassa on viitattu myös tehtaalta saatuihin kokemusperäisiin tietoihin. Tämän työn kokeellisessa osassa selvitettiin InkeroistenKartonkitehtaan Kartonkikone 4:a. ja sillä suoritettuja spraytärkkelyskokeita. Liitoskosteuksia selvitettiin pääosin aiempien mittausten ja kokemusten perusteella.

Työssä tutkittiin metalli- ja anioniepäpuhtauksien myötäuuttautumista sinkin mukana di(2-etyyliheksyyli)fosforihappoalla (D2EHPA). Laboratoriokokeissa selvitettiin pH:n vaikutusta metalliepäpuhtauksien uuttautumiseen pH-alueella -O, l... 3 sekä pesujen vaikutusta sinkillä ladatun orgaanisen faasin metallipitoisuuksiin. Kokeita tehtiin sekä synteettisillä että autenttisilla prosessiliuoksilla. Anionikokeissa tutkittiin raudan ja sinkin vaikutusta kloridin ja fluoridin uuttautumiseen. Synteettisillä liuoksilla tehdyissä kokeissa tutkittiin kadmiumin, koboltin, nikkelin, kuparin sekä antimonin uuttautumista sinkkisulfaattiliuoksesta. Kokeissa havaittiin D2EHPA:n uuttavan sinkkiä selvästi em. metalleja paremmin. Sinkki uuttautui sulfaattiliuoksesta lähes täydellisesti tasapaino-pH:n ollessa yli 2,3. Sinkin jälkeen muista metalleista uuttautui eniten kadmium ja järjestyksessä sitten kupari, koboltti ja nikkeli. Epäpuhtausmetallien myötäuuttautumista lisääntyi uuton tasapaino-pH:n kasvaessa ja väheni sinkkilatauksen kasvaessa. Kahdella peräkkäisellä pesuaskeleella, joissa ensimmäinen pesuliuos sisälsi 5 g/L rikkihappoa ja toinen sekä 15 g/L rikkihappoa että 5 g/L sinkkiä saatiin kaikkien epäpuhtausmetallien pitoisuudet jäämään alle 3 mg/L. Antimonin uuttokokeissa huomattiin antimonin uuttautuvan täydellisesti D2EHPA:lla pH:sta riippumatta pH-alueella0...3. Prosessiliuoksilla tehdyissä kokeissa todettiin D2EHPA:n pystyvän tehokkaasti erottamaan sinkin magnesiumista ßzn,Mg ˜107 ja kadmiumista ßzn,cd ˜106. Havaittiin myös, että mitä suurempi sinkki- ja rautalataus orgaanisessa faasissa on sitä vähemmän magnesiumia ja kadmiumia uuttautuu. Ensimmäisessä pesussa saatiin sekä kadmiumin että magnesiumin pitoisuudet putoamaan keskimäärin 0,1 mg/L eli 30 alkuperäisestä pitoisuudesta. Toisella pesuaskeleella ei enää ollut vaikutusta kadmiumin ja magnesiumin pitoisuuksiin orgaanisessa faasissa. Kokeissa havaittiin myös, että D2EHPA:n latausasteen ylittäessä 0,7 alkaa sinkki-D2EHPA-kompleksit polymeroitua ja faasit eivät enää selkeytyneet helposti. Anionikokeissa huomattiin, ettei D2EHPA uuttanut kloridi tai fluoridi sinkin tai raudan mukana. D2EHPA:n havaittiin myös itsessään sisältävän hieman kloridia.

Dioxins and furans, PCDD/Fs, are highly toxic substances formed in post combustion zones in furnaces. PCDD/F emissions are regulated by a waste incineration directive which relates also to co-incineration plants. Several observations of dioxin and furan enhancements in wet scrub- bers have been reported previously. This is thought to be due to the so-called "memory effect" which occurs when dioxins and furans absorb into plastic material in scrubbers and desorb when ambient circumstances alter significantly. At the co-incineration plant involved, dioxins and furans are controlled with a wet scrubber, the tower packing of which is made of plastic in which activated carbon particles are dispersed. This should avoid the memory effect and act as a dioxin and furan sink since dioxins and furans are absorbed irreversibly into the packing ma- terial. In this case, the tower packing in the scrubber is covered with a white layer that has been found to be mainly aluminium. The aim of this thesis was to determine the aluminium balance and the dioxin and furan behaviour in the scrubber and, thus, the impacts that the foul- ing has on dioxin and furan removal. The source of aluminium, reasons for fouling and further actions to minimize its impacts on dioxin and furan removal were also to be discovered. Measurements in various media around the scrubber and in fuels were made and a profile analysis of PCDD/F and mass balance calculations were carried out. PCDD/F content de- creased in the scrubber. The reduced PCDD/F was not discharged into scrubbing water. The removal mechanism seems to work in spite of the fouling, at least with low PCDD/F loads. Most of the PCDD/F in excess water originates from the Kymijoki River which is used as feeding water in the scrubber. Fouling turned out to consist mainly of aluminium hydroxides. Sludge combusted in the furnace was found to be a significant source of aluminium. Ways to minimize the fouling would be adjustment of pH to a proper lever, installation of a mechanical filter to catch the loose material from the scrubbing water and affecting the aluminium content of the sludge.

O controle de qualidade de processadoras automáticas é um dos aspectos mais importantes na implementação de programas de garantia de qualidade em radiodiagnóstico. Um programa piloto de garantia de qualidade para processadoras automáticas utilizando o método sensitométrico foi implementado no serviço de mamografia de um hospital universitário no Rio de Janeiro. Inicialmente foi feita uma avaliação das condições de funcionamento de todas as câmaras escuras do hospital. Foi constatado que apresentavam altos níveis de temperatura e umidade relativa ambiental e várias entradas de luz; nível de fog elevado, que tornava necessário um aumento de até 24% na mAs para compensar a perda de contraste; tempo de processamento seco-a-seco com erros de até 56%; temperatura do revelador de 39°C (4°C a mais do que o recomendado pelo fabricante); taxa de reposição dos produtos químicos com erros de até 417% acima do recomendado pelo fabricante; e índices de rejeição de filmes da ordem de 21%. Medidas sensitométricas feitas antes da implementação do projeto acusaram valores de base + fog de 0,24 densidade óptica, assim como velocidade e contraste fora dos limites recomendados. Os filmes apresentavam vários artefatos produzindo imagens de baixa qualidade. O projeto piloto consistiu na implementação do programa de garantia de qualidade no setor de mamografia do hospital. Muitas outras iniciativas contribuíram para o sucesso do projeto, tais como: treinamento dos técnicos de mamografia, melhor manutenção do mamógrafo e, especialmente, o aumento do número médio de pacientes por dia, de 7 para 12, o que contribuiu para a estabilidade da processadora. Esta iniciativa permitiu que a taxa de reposição dos produtos químicos fosse reduzida a níveis aceitáveis. A implementação do controle de qualidade manteve os parâmetros sensitométricos sob controle. O maior ganho com a implantação do programa foi a melhoria da qualidade da imagem, sem artefatos, com redução significativa dos custos do serviço e, especialmente, a redução das doses nos pacientes, em virtude da diminuição dos índices de rejeição dos filmes para 7,7%.

En aquest projecte es reflexiona sobre la capacitat dels infants per aprendre ciències des del parvulari, i la possibilitat de l’escola d’iniciar-los en temes complexos com són els fenòmens meteorològics. És positiu que els docents s’interessin per conèixer les teories intuïtives dels seus alumnes abans d’introduir nous temes de ciències, d’aquesta manera aquests es podran abordar més efectivament i per tant serà més senzill fer-ne evolucionar les seves idees inicials, acostant-los a un model més aproximat amb la ciència. L’estudi, que es basa en les idees d’infants de 4 a 7 anys, es fonamenta amb un recull de dades reals a través d’entrevistes relacionades amb els fenòmens de la pluja, la neu i la boira. D’aquesta manera, s’analitzen les teories dels infants que expressen a través dels conceptes intuïtius que han anat creant i dels conceptes introduïts durant la seva estada a l’escola. La recerca finalitza amb unes conclusions en què es reflexiona sobre la possibilitat d’aprenentatge dels infants en relació als fenòmens meteorològics que els envolten.

The knowledge on the optics of fogbows is scarce, and their polarization characteristics have never been measured to our knowledge. To fill this gap we measured the polarization features of 16 fogbows during the Beringia 2005 Arctic polar research expedition by imaging polarimetry in the red, green and blue spectral ranges. We present here the first polarization patterns of the fogbow. In the patterns of the degree of linear polarization p, fogbows and their supernumerary bows are best visible in the red spectral range due to the least dilution of fogbow light by light scattered in air. In the patterns of the angle of polarization α fogbows are practically not discernible because their α-pattern is the same as that of the sky: the direction of polarization is perpendicular to the plane of scattering and is parallel to the arc of the bow, independently of the wavelength. Fogbows and their supernumeraries were best seen in the patterns of the polarized radiance. In these patterns the angular distance δ between the peaks of the primary and the first supernumerary and the angular width σ of the primary bow were determined along different radii from the center of the bow. δ ranged between 6.08° and 13.41° , while σ changed from 5.25° to 19.47° . Certain fogbows were relatively homogeneous, meaning small variations of δ and σ along their bows. Other fogbows were heterogeneous, possessing quite variable δ- and σ-values along their bows. This variability could be a consequence of the characteristics of the high Arctic with open waters within the ice shield resulting in the spatiotemporal change of the droplet size within the fog

Tässä työssä toteutetaan IEEE 802.16-2004 standardiin perustuva langaton WiMAX tietoliikenneverkko, sekä tutkitaan etenemismallien soveltuvuutta satama-alueelle. Myös muiden verkkoratkaisujen soveltuvuutta pohditaan. Lisäksi tutkitaan sääolosuhteiden sekä päätelaitteen liikkumisnopeuden vaikutuksia yhteyteen. Satama-alueella on teräksestä valmistettuja merikontteja pinottuina päällekkäin, ja ne vaikeuttavat langattomien signaalien etenemistä. Merikonttien pinot säilyttävät tietyn maksimikorkeuden johtuen työkoneiden rajallisesta kyvystä pinota niitä. Langattomien signaalien etenemiselle erilaisissa ympäristöissä on kehitetty etenemismalleja. Etenemisallien avulla voidaan pyrkiä ennustamaan signaalin vahvuutta eri etäisyyksillä tukiasemasta. Etenemismallit kuvaavat ympäristön aiheuttamaa signaalin vaimenemista erilaisten muuttujien avulla. Langattoman tietoliikenneverkon toteutus ongelmatilanteineen dokumentoitiin ja alueella tehtiin kuuluvuusmittauksia. Löydettiin etenemismalli ja muuttujat, joiden avulla lasketut tulokset vastasivat mitattuja tuloksia hyvin. Myös sääolosuhteiden sekä päätelaitteen liikkumisnopeuden vaikutusta signaalin vahvuuteen tutkittiin. Vesi- ja lumisateen sekä sumun vaikutuksen todettiin olevan merkityksetön verkon käyttämällä 3.5 GHz taajuusalueella. Myöskään päätelaitteen liikkumisnopeuden ei todettu vaikuttavan toiminnallisuuteen 20-30 kilometrin tuntinopeudella, jolla työkoneet alueella liikkuvat.

There are small amounts of valuable metals, such as indium, gallium and germanium, in zinc process solutions. Their solvent extraction was studied in this work in sulphate solutions containing zinc and other metals present in industrial solutions. It was discovered, that a commercial bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (D2EHPA) extractant can be used to extract indium and gallium. Indium was extracted separately at a higher acid concentration than gallium. Zinc was co-extracted faster than gallium and almost as much as gallium at the same pH. However, the scrubbing of zinc was possible using a dilute sulphuric acid and a short contact time while gallium losses were small. Both indium and gallium were stripped with sulphuric acid. Germanium was extracted with 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxydodecane-6-oxime with the commercial name of LIX 63. Unlike other metals in the solution the extraction of germanium increased with different extractants as the acidity increased. Germanium extraction isotherm was measured for a 125 g/L sulfuric acid solution. The loaded organic phase was washed with pure water. It removed the co-extracted acid and part of the germanium and extracted impurities such as iron and copper. Germanium was stripped using a NaOH solution. A process model utilizing own experimentally determined extraction, scrubbing and stripping isotherms was made with HSC Sim software developed by Outotec Oyj. The model based on McCabe–Thiele diagrams was used in sizing the necessary amount of stages and phase ratios in a recovery process. It was concluded, that indium, gallium and germanium can be recovered in the process from a feed where their concentrations are low (<300 ppm). In an example case the feed contained also more than 20 g/L zinc and 2–8 g/L iron, aluminium and copper. The recoveries of indium, gallium and germanium were more than 90 % when 1–3 stages were used in each extraction, scrubbing and stripping section. Since the number of stages is small mixer-settlers would be well suited for this purpose.

Utgångspunkten för avhandlingen är finländska konstnärsresor till Spanien under 1800-talet, och kontakterna med spansk konst och kultur. Endast ett fåtal finländare reste till Spanien, och inledningsvis utrycktes intresset för spansk konst i form av kopior efter gamla mästare, utförda både efter original utanför Spanien, och reproduktioner. Denna föga imponerande start efterföljdes av ett litet antal målare som verkligen reste till Spanien under 1800-talets senare hälft: Adolf von Becker (1831–1909), Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) och Venny Soldan (1863–1945). Jag undersöker hur deras syn på landet manifesterades i deras resebilder i förhållande till den växande turistindustrin. Syftet med avhandlingen är att visa hur den resande målaren, likt en turist, föreställde sig, upplevde och tolkade den främmande kulturen, och hur detta avbildades och uttrycktes i deras resebilder. Vid sidan av ikonografisk analys och stilkritik utnyttjas forskningsmetoder från turismteorin. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att de flesta konstnärerna dyrkade konsten på Prado-museet, beundrade flamenco, Andalusiens vackra kvinnor, tjurfäktningar och zigenarna. De längtade efter en förgången och exotisk tid, samtidigt som de följde de vältrampade turiststigarna och hänfördes av de sedvanliga sevärdheterna; de reste i ett delvis mytiskt och delvis verkligt land. Likt turister (i allmänhet), såg de det de ville se, och sökte sig till på förhand inpräntade mentala (före)bilder. Resebilderna kan med fog tolkas som medvetet konstruerade minnen från resan, souvenirs d’Espagne. Samtidigt förstärkte och upprätthöll valen av motiv uppfattningen att Spaniens äldre konst och samtida kultur var mer ”äkta” (autentiska) än den kultur man själv tillhörde. The consumption of manganese is increasing, but huge amounts of manganese still end up in waste in hydrometallurgical processes. The recovery of manganese from multi-metal solutions at low concentrations may not be economical. In addition, poor iron control typically prevents the production of high purity manganese. Separation of iron from manganese can be done with chemical precipitation or solvent extraction methods. Combined carbonate precipitation with air oxidation is a feasible method to separate iron and manganese due to the fast kinetics, good controllability and economical reagents. In addition the leaching of manganese carbonate is easier and less acid consuming than that of hydroxide or sulfide precipitates. Selective iron removal with great efficiency from MnSO4 solution is achieved by combined oxygen or air oxidation and CaCO3 precipitation at pH > 5.8 and at a redox potential of > 200 mV. In order to avoid gypsum formation, soda ash should be used instead of limestone. In such case, however, extra attention needs to be paid on the reagents mole ratios in order to avoid manganese coprecipitation. After iron removal, pure MnSO4 solution was obtained by solvent extraction using organophosphorus reagents, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and bis(2,4,4- trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272). The Mn/Ca and Mn/Mg selectivities can be increased by decreasing the temperature from the commonly used temperatures (40 –60oC) to 5oC. The extraction order of D2EHPA (Ca before Mn) at low temperature remains unchanged but the lowering of temperature causes an increase in viscosity and slower phase separation. Of these regents, CYANEX 272 is selective for Mn over Ca and, therefore, it would be the better choice if there is Ca present in solution. A three-stage Mn extraction followed by a two-stage scrubbing and two-stage sulfuric acid stripping is an effective method of producing a very pure MnSO4 intermediate solution for further processing. From the intermediate MnSO4 some special Mn- products for ion exchange applications were synthesized and studied. Three types of octahedrally coordinated manganese oxide materials as an alternative final product for manganese were chosen for synthesis: layer structured Nabirnessite, tunnel structured Mg-todorokite and K-kryptomelane. As an alternative source of pure MnSO4 intermediate, kryptomelane was synthesized by using a synthetic hydrometallurgical tailings. The results show that the studied OMS materials adsorb selectively Cu, Ni, Cd and K in the presence of Ca and Mg. It was also found that the exchange rates were reasonably high due to the small particle dimensions. Materials are stable in the studied conditions and their maximum Cu uptake capacity was 1.3 mmol/g. Competitive uptake of metals and acid was studied using equilibrium, batch kinetic and fixed-bed measurements. The experimental data was correlated with a dynamic model, which also accounts for the dissolution of the framework manganese. Manganese oxide micro-crystals were also bound onto silica to prepare a composite material having a particle size large enough to be used in column separation experiments. The MnOx/SiO2 ratio was found to affect significantly the properties of the composite. The higher the ratio, the lower is the specific surface area, the pore volume and the pore size. On the other hand, higher amount of silica binder gives composites better mechanical properties. Birnesite and todorokite can be aggregated successfully with colloidal silica at pH 4 and with MnO2/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.7. The best gelation and drying temperature was 110oC and sufficiently strong composites were obtained by additional heat-treatment at 250oC for 2 h. The results show that silica–supported MnO2 materials can be utilized to separate copper from nickel and cadmium. The behavior of the composites can be explained reasonably well with the presented model and the parameters estimated from the data of the unsupported oxides. The metal uptake capacities of the prepared materials were quite small. For example, the final copper loading was 0.14 mmol/gMnO2. According to the results the special MnO2 materials are potential for a specific environmental application to uptake harmful metal ions.
