Newrareearth metal bis(alkyl) complexes [(NPNPh)Ln(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF) (NPNPh:N(Ph)PPh2=NC6H2Me3-2,4,6; Ln = Sc (3a), Ln = Y (3b), Ln = Lu (3c)) and [(NPNPy)Sc(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF)1 (NPNPY = N(Py)PPh2=NC6H2Me3-2,4,6) (3d)) have been prepared via protonolysis reaction between rare earth metal tris(alkyl)s and the corresponding iminophosphonamines. Complexes 3a-d are analogous monomers of THF solvate. Each metal ion coordinates to a eta(2)-chelated NPN ligand and two cis-located alkyl groups, adopting tetrahedron geometry.

Poly( ethylene oxide)-b-poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PEO-b-PDMA) was synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) monomer using PEO-Br macro initiators as initiator, CuBr and 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazamacrocyclotetra decane (Me-6[14] aneN(4)) as catalyst and ligand. PEO-Br macroinitiator was synthesized by esterification of PEO with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. GPC and H-1 NMR studies show that the plot of ln([DMA](0)/[ DMA]) against the reaction time is linear, and the molecular weight of the resulting PDMA increased linearly with the conversion. Within 3 h, the polymerization can reach almost 60% of conversion. PEO-b-PDMA copolymer with low polydispersity index (M-w/M-n approximate to 1.1) is obtained. Self-assembly of PEO-b-PDMA in selective solvents is also studied. It could self-assemble into micelles in methanol/acetone (1/10, v/v) solution. TEM analyses of the PEO-b-PDMA micelles with narrow size distribution revealed that their size and shape depend much on the copolymer composition.

A series of synthetic peptides in which the C-terminal carboxyl grouping (-CO2H) of each has been chemically converted into a variety of ene dione derivatives (-CO-CH CH-CO-X; X -H, -Me, -OBut, - OEt, -OMe, -CO-OMe), have been prepared and tested as inactivators against typical members of the serine and cysteine protease families. For example, the sequences Cbz-Pro-Phe-CH CH-CO-OEt (I) which fulfils the known primary and secondary specificity requirements of the serine protease chymotrypsin, and Cbz-Phe-Ala-CH CH-CO-OEt (II) which represents a general recognition sequence for cysteine proteases such as cathepsins B, L and S, have been tested as putative irreversible inactivators of their respective target proteases. It was found that, whereas II, for example, functioned as a time-dependent, irreversible inactivator of each of the cysteine proteases, I behaved only as a modest competitive reversible inhibitor of chymotrypsin. Within the simple ester sequences Cbz- Phe-Ala-CH CH-CO-R, the rank order of inhibitor effectiveness decreases in the order R -OMe > - OEt >> -OBut. It was also found that the presence of both an unsaturated double bond and an ester (or a-keto ester) moiety were indispensable for obtaining irreversible inactivators. Of the irreversible inactivators synthesized, Cbz-Phe-Ala-CH CHCO- CO-OEt (which contains a highly electrophilic a-keto ester grouping) was found to be the most effective exhibiting, for example, second-order rate constants of approximately 1.7 106/M/min and approximately 4.9 104/M/min against recombinant human cathepsin S and human spleenic cathepsin B, respectively. This initial study thus holds out the promise that this class of inactivator may well be specific for the cysteine protease subclass.

Using caffeic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid as templates, two molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared that were used for isolation of polyphenols from olive mill waste water samples (OMWWs) without previous pre-treatment. For the preparation of the caffeic acid MIPs 4-vinylpyridine, allylurea, allylaniline and methacrylic acid were tested as functional monomers, ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (EDMA), pentaerythritol trimethylacrylate (PETRA) and divinylbenzene 80 (DVB80) as cross-linkers and tetrahydrofuran as porogen. For p-hydroxybenzoic acid 4-vinylpyridine, allylurea and allylaniline were tested as functional monomers, EDMA and PETRA as cross-linkers and acetonitrile as porogen. The performance of the synthesized polymers was evaluated against seven structurally related compounds by means of polymer-based HPLC. The two polymers that presented the most interesting properties were further evaluated by batch rebinding and from the derived isotherms their capacity and binding strength were determined. Using solid-phase extraction (SPE), their ability to recognize and bind the template molecule from an aqueous solution as well as the pH dependence of the binding strength were explored. After establishing the best SPE protocol, an aqueous model mixture of compounds and a raw OMWWs sample were loaded on the two best polymers. The result of the consecutive use of the two polymers on the same sample was explored. It was concluded that acidic conditions favour the recognition abilities of both polymers and that they can be used for a quick and efficient isolation of the polyphenol fraction directly from raw OMWW.

Iron and mixed iron aluminium pillared montmorillonites prepared by partial hydrolysis method was subjected to room temperature exchange with transition metals of the first series. The materials exhibit good structural as well as thermal stability. Exchanged metals were found to be present inside the porous network, in the environs of the pillars. Mixed pillaring resulted in the intercalation of Al 13 like polymers in which Al is partially substituted by Fe. The acidic structure was followed by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and cumene cracking test reaction. Weak and medium sites overshadow the strong sites in all systems. However, exchange with metals increases the number of strong sites. The prepared materials are efficient catalysts for gas phase MTBE synthesis. The catalytic activity can be well correlated with the total amount of weak and medium acid sites.

Boron-containing complexes that have the potential to irreversibly accumulate in melanoma cells have been prepared by reaction of amino acids with 9-methoxy-9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane. The ability of each complex to act as a substrate for tyrosinase has been probed by oximetry. Increased uptake of the lead candidate in a tyrosinase-rich cell line, compared with a tyrosinase-absent cell line, is reported, with results correlating well with that for a drug currently approved for BNCT.

A series of multicarboxylic acid appended imidazolium ionic liquids ( McaILs) with chloride [ Cl](-) or bromide [ Br](-) as anions have been synthesized and characterized. Deprotonation of these ionic acids gives the corresponding zwitterions. Re-protonation of the zwitterions with strong Bronsted acids gives a series of new ionic acid-adducts, many of which remained as room-temperature ionic liquids. A new catalytic system, McaIL/PdCl2 for the selective catalytic oxidation of styrene to acetophenone with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant has been attempted. In the presence of McaILs, it is found that the quantity of palladium chloride PdCl2 used can be greatly reduced while the activity ( TOF) and selectivity towards acetophenone are enhanced sharply. It is also shown that the catalytic properties of this system could be finely tuned through the molecular design of the McaILs. The best TOF value obtained so far is 146 h(-1) with 100% conversion of styrene at 93% selectivity to acetophenone. In addition, the catalytic activity has been maintained for at least ten catalytic cycles.

Materials used in current technological approaches for the removal of mercury lack selectivity. Given that this is one of the main features of supramolecular chemistry, receptors based on calix[4]arene and calix[4]resorcarene containing functional groups able to interact selectively with polluting ions while discriminating against biologically essential ones were designed. Thus two receptors, a partially functionalized calix[4]arene derivative, namely, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl [25-27-bis(diethyl thiophosphate amino)dihydroxy] calix[4]arene (1) and a fully functionalized calix[4]resorcarene, 4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-diethyl thiophosphate calix[4]resorcarene (2) are introduced. Mercury(II) was the identified target due to the environmental and health problems associated with its presence in water Thus following the synthesis and characterization of 1 and 2 in solution ((1)HNMR) and in the solid state (X-ray crystallography) the sequence of experimental events leading to cation complexation studies in acetonitrile and methanol ((1)H NMR, conductance, potentiometric, and calorimetric measurements) with the aim of assessing their behavior as mercury selective receptors are described. The cation selectivity pattern observed in acetonitrile follows the sequence Hg(II) > Cu(II) > Ag(I). In methanol 1 is also selective for Hg(II) relative to Ag(I) but no interaction takes place between this receptor and Cu(II) in this solvent. Based on previous results and experimental facts shown in this paper, it is concluded that the complexation observed with Cu(II) in acetonitrile occurs through the acetonitrile-receptor adduct rather than through the free ligand. Receptor 2 has an enhanced capacity for uptaking Hg(II) but forms metalate complexes with Cu(II). These studies in solution guided the inmobilization of receptor 1 into a silica support to produce a new and recyclable material for the removal of Hg(II) from water. An assessment on its capacity to extract this cation from water relative to Cu(II) and Ag (I) shows that the cation selectivity pattern of the inmobilized receptor is the same as that observed for the free receptor in methanol. These findings demonstrate that fundamental studies play a critical role in the selection of the receptor to be attached to silicates as well as in the reaction medium used for the synthesis of the new decontaminating agent.
