Por un antiguo agravio. Los Tarantos y su referente literario

Los Tarantos, película española dirigida por Francisco Rovira Beleta, fue nominada al Oscar a mejor película de habla no inglesa en 1963. Su interés proviene no sólo por ser un magnífico testimonio documental de la ciudad de Barcelona y de la cultura gitana en España, o su valor como musical, sino que además destaca por ser una interesante adaptación de la obra teatral de Alfredo Mañas Historia de los Tarantos. Este trabajo pretende analizar y destacar los aspectos más relevantes que unen y separan la película y el texto teatral, así como relacionar ambas obras con su primer referente, el Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare.

Världar av vackra kvinnor och våldsamma män : En analys av två fantasyromaner ur ett genusmedvetet perspektiv

This essay explores whether the gender constructions in Joe Abercrombie’s Best Served Cold and Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest question or contribute to existing gender categories. The analysis is performed using Raewynn Connell’s gender structure model, Brian Attebery’s theory of fantasy as a "fuzzy set" and Maria Nikolajeva’s schedule for stereotypical gender traits. Thus, both of the texts were analyzed to determine if their contents, structures and reader responses create opportunities or act limiting, how the main characters are portrayed and how the books various power-, production-, emotional- and symbolic relations look like. The result of the analysis is that both of the books portray patriarchal worlds, sexual division of labor, misogyny and gender-binding statements. The characters in Daughter of the Forest are quite stereotypical, with some traits that exceed their gender, whilst the characters in Best Served Cold are all portrayed with traditionally manly traits (even the female main character). Therefor one can say that Best Served cold’s female protagonist is the only element in the books that fully questions prevailing gender categories.

“By Looking Liking”: Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo+Juliet

Twenty years since its release onto the big screen, Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo+Juliet continues to attract viewers, divide critics and remain unchallenged, in a league of its own, when it comes to film adaptation of Shakespeare’s plays. This article begins with taking stock of reception directions which still dispute the field of film adaptation. Cued by Worthen’s “Performance Paradigm”, my argument positions Luhrmann’s film (his second at the time and the one to propel the Australian director into Hollywood fame) firmly in the cinematic and sees the film narrative not as opposed to the textual and/or spoken one, but as a complex citational practice developed at the level of oral, visual and written discourse.

JULIET is a service provided by SHERPA. Its mission is to provide a brief summary of each funding agency’s policy on self-archiving of the published research they have funded.
