The University of Queensland’s repository eSpace is an institutional repository designed and developed in-house, starting over 9 years ago. It is based on an internally developed open source front end to Fedora called Fez. The bespoke nature of the eSpace repository has enabled the University to incorporate a wide variety of both internal and external systems. These systems range from JavaScript web based interfaces (e.g. Altmetric), to backend APIs (e.g. SHERPA/RoMEO), and proprietary datasets (e.g. Scopus Custom Dataset) which are regularly integrated. The aim of this presentation is to explore the challenges to open repositories that the current academic environment presents from a technical perspective, delving into some of the issues faced with interactions from the above mentioned APIs, and demonstrating the systems we have built to adapt to those challenges.
