The properties of metasurfaces composed of doubly periodic arrays of interwoven quadrifilar spiral conductors on magnetized ferrite substrates have been investigated with the aid of the full-wave electromagnetic simulator. The effects of incident wave polarization and ferrite magnetization on the scattering characteristics have been analysed at both normal and in-plane dc magnetic bias. The features of the fundamental topological resonances in the interwoven spiral arrays on ferrite substrates are illustrated by the simulation results and the effects of ferrite gyrotropy and dispersion on the array resonance response and fractional bandwidth are discussed.

The study of granular material is of great interest to many researchers in both engineering and science communities. The importance of such a study derives from its complex rheological character and also its significant role in a wide range of industrial applications, such as coal, food, plastics, pharmaceutical, powder metallurgy and mineral processing. A number of recent reports have been focused on the physics of non-cohesive granular material submitted to vertical vibration in either experimental or theoretical approaches. Such a kind of system can be used to separate, mix and dry granular materials in industries. It exhibits different instability behaviour on its surface when under vertical vibration, for example, avalanching, surface fluidization and surface wave, and these phenomena have attracted particular interest of many researchers. However, its fundamental understanding of the instability mechanism is not yet well-understood. This paper is therefore to study the dynamics of granular motion in such a kind of system using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT), which allows the motion of a single tracer particle to be followed in a non-invasive way. Features of the solids motion such as cycle frequency and dispersion index were investigated via means of authors’ specially-written programmes. Regardless of the surface behaviour, particles are found to travel in rotational movement in horizontal plane. Particle cycle frequency is found to increase strongly with increasing vibration amplitude. Particle dispersion also increased strongly with vibration amplitude. Horizontal dispersion is observed to always exceed vertical dispersion.

Bone injuries and failures often require the inception of implant biomaterial. Research in this area has received increasing attention recently. In particular, porous metals are attractive due to its unique physical, mechanical, and new bone tissue ingrowth properties. In the present study, TiZr alloy powders were prepared using mechanical alloying. Novel TiZr alloy foams with relative densities of approximately 0.3 were fabricated by a powder metallurgical process. The TiZr alloy foams displayed an interconnected porous structure resembling bone and the pore size ranged from 200 to 500 μm. The compressive plateau stress and the Young’s modulus of the TiZr foam were 78.4 MPa and 15.3 GPa, respectively. Both the porous structure and the mechanical properties of the TiZr foam were very close to those of natural bone.

An Al6061-20%Al2O3 powder metallurgy (PM) metal matrix composite (MMC) with a strongly clustered particle distribution is subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at a temperature of 370 °C. The evolution of the homogeneity of the particle distribution in the material during ECAP is investigated by the quadrat method. The model proposed by Tan and Zhang [Mater Sci Eng 1998;244:80] for estimating the critical particle size which is required for a homogeneous particle distribution in PM MMCs is extended to the case of a combination of extrusion and ECAP. The applicability of the model to predict a homogeneity of the particle distribution after extrusion and ECAP is discussed. It is shown that ECAP leads to an increase of the  uniformity of the particle distribution and the fracture toughness.

Highly porous titanium and titanium alloys with an open cell structure are promising implant materials due to their low elastic modulus, excellent bioactivity, biocompatibility and the ability for bone regeneration. However, the mechanical strength of the porous titanium decreases dramatically with increasing porosity, which is a prerequisite for the ingrowth of new bone tissues and vascularization. In the present study, porous titanium with porosity gradients, i.e. solid core with highly porous outer shell was successfully fabricated using a powder metallurgy approach. Satisfactory mechanical properties derived from the solid core and osseointegration capacity derived from the outer shell can be achieved simultaneously through the design of the porosity gradients of the porous titanium. The outer shell of porous titanium exhibited a porous architecture very close to
that of natural bone, i.e. a porosity of 70% and pore size distribution in the range of 200 - 500 μm. The peak stress and the elastic modulus of the porous titanium with a porosity gradient (an overall porosity 63%) under compression were approximately 152 MPa and 4 GPa, respectively. These
properties are very close to those of natural bone. For comparison, porous titanium with a uniform porosity of 63% was also prepared and haracterised in the present study. The peak stress and the elastic modulus were 109 MPa and 4 GPa, respectively. The topography of the porous titanium
affected the mechanical properties significantly.

Various types of titanium alloys with high strength and low elastic modulus and, at the same time, vanadium and aluminium free have been developed as surgical biomaterials in recent years. Moreover, porous metals are promising hard tissue implants in orthopaedic and dentistry, where they mimic the porous structure and the low elastic modulus of natural bone. In the present study, new biocompatible Ti-based alloy foams with approximate relative densities of 0.4, in which Sn and Nb were added as alloying metals, were synthesised through powder metallurgy method.
The new alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequently sintered at high temperature using a vacuum furnace. The characteristics and the processability of the ball milled powders and the new porous titanium-based alloys were characterised by X-ray diffraction, optical
microscopy and scanning electron microscopy .The mechanical properties of the new titanium alloys were examined by Vickers microhardness measurements and compression testing.

In the present study, Ti-16Sn-4Nb alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying (MA). Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to characterise the phase transformation and the microstructure evolution. Results indicated that ball milling to 8 h led to the formation of a supersaturated hcp α-Ti and partial amorphous phase due to the solid solution of Sn and Nb into Ti lattice. The microstructure of the bulk sintered Ti-16Sn-4Nb alloy samples made from the powders at shorter ball milling times, i.e. 20 min- 2 h, exhibited a primary α surrounded by a Widmanstätten structure (transformed β); while in the samples made from the powders at longer ball milling times, i.e. 5- 10 h, the alloy evolved to a microstructure with a disordered and fine β phase dispersed homogeneously within the α matrix. These results contribute to the understanding of the microstructure evolution in alloys of this type prepared by powder metallurgy.

An experimental investigation is presented for the viscoplastic behaviour of porous metals. The interest is in the influence of porosity on the deformation behaviour of such materials under loading at various strain rates. Material samples of bronze with 10% tin and pure iron were fabricated by powder metallurgy technology with porosity ranging from 10 to 40%. The samples were then subjected to a large uniaxial compression under both quasi-static and dynamic loading with the maximum strain rate at 10 s−1. The materials show behaviour in an approximately bi-linear nature for strain up to 0.4. The data will be used to develop simple phenomenological constitutive models, which incorporate the volume fraction as a control factor.

Titanium alloy scaffolds for bone tissue engineering are receiving increasing attention because their porous structure and mechanical properties can be adjusted to match those of bone. In particular, there is an enormous potential to increase the life of such implant material if the porous structure can be imparted with shape memory properties. In the present study, TiNi scaffolds with a porous structure and high porosities up to 75% were fabricated by powder metallurgy. The porous structure was characterized by scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties, the shape memory and superelastic effects were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, nanoindentation and compressive tests. Results indicate that the porous TiNi scaffolds display an open-cell porous structure which provides new bone tissue ingrowth ability. The mechanical properties of the TiNi scaffolds can be tailored to match those of natural bone. Furthermore, the TiNi scaffolds show good shape memory and superelastic effects.
