The advent of the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) necessitates the development of a powerful framework for the analysis of radio measurements of cosmic ray air showers. As AERA performs "radio-hybrid" measurements of air shower radio emission in coincidence with the surface particle detectors and fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the radio analysis functionality had to be incorporated in the existing hybrid analysis solutions for fluorescence and surface detector data. This goal has been achieved in a natural way by extending the existing Auger Offline software framework with radio functionality. In this article, we lay out the design, highlights and features of the radio extension implemented in the Auger Offline framework. Its functionality has achieved a high degree of sophistication and offers advanced features such as vectorial reconstruction of the electric field, advanced signal processing algorithms, a transparent and efficient handling of FFTs, a very detailed simulation of detector effects, and the read-in of multiple data formats including data from various radio simulation codes. With the increasing attention towards the role of information systems (IS) as a vehicle to address environmental issues, IS researchers and practitioners have strived to leverage advanced Green IS innovations to persuade people to engage in environmentally responsible practices and support pro-environmental initiatives. Yet, existing research reveals that the persuasion effects of Green IS designs remain equivocal. In particular, many design characteristics advocated in Green IS research can produce bi-directional changes in IS users’ attitudes and behaviours. To address this issue, this thesis drew upon the circumplex model of social values (S.H. Schwartz, 1992) to explain when and how online persuasion designs come to affect people’s judgements on resource conservation and environmental protection. Three sets of working propositions and specific hypotheses were developed. Specifically, this research suggests that the use of an IS application can elicit different value primes and draw IS users’ attentions to different motivational functions of engaging in suggested behavioural changes. It is expected that matching online persuasion appeals with IS users’ personal value priorities can increase users’ acceptance of online behavioural suggestions. Second, it is hypothesized that the persuasion effect tends to be weakened, as the system users become aware of the valuematching design in a given IS application. Third, it is proposed that different value primes presented in an IS application can result in different unintended effects on IS users’ global pro-environmental attitudes and motivations. The hypotheses were tested in the two pilot studies and two full-scale online experiments. The study findings generally support the main predictions of the hypotheses. On the one hand, this thesis providesiii empirical evidence that IS design for online persuasion can be instrumental in influencing IS users’ judgements on a range of resource conservation practices. On the other hand, this work explains why the effectiveness of IS-enabled online persuasion attempts needs to be measured not only in terms of the intended changes in a target behavioural domain but also in terms of unintended changes in people’s general environmental orientations. Uma “rede social” diz respeito a uma estrutura constituída por pessoas ou organizações que partilham interesses, motivações e valores comuns. Um ponto partilhado pelos diversos tipos de rede social é a troca de informações, conhecimentos, interesses e esforços na tentativa de atingir objectivos comuns, muitas vezes potencializando forças e recursos em situações de crise. Recentemente tem-se ouvido falar bastante deste conceito aplicado à internet. A maternidade constitui, por si só, um momento de crise na vida de cada família e de cada mulher, requerendo adaptações e mudanças. O estudo realizado teve o intuito de avaliar o suporte online e offline (denominando-se essas ligações de redes sociais), no caso específico de assuntos ligados à maternidade. Pretendeu-se verificar também se existia uma correlação entre estes tipos de suporte e os níveis de stress e solidão sentidos pelas mães. Por último, aferiu-se ainda a influência que a idade dos filhos teria nesta adesão a grupos de suporte à maternidade, no Facebook. Este estudo teve uma amostra constituída por 170 mulheres (mães), estando as suas idades compreendidas entre os 25 e os 62 anos. Os resultados revelaram que apesar de não haver diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre o apoio online e offline, as mulheres que pertencem a grupos do Facebook tendem a sentir mais suporte por parte das plataformas de suporte disponíveis. Constatou-se ainda que não existem diferenças significativas entre os níveis de solidão e stress, entre mães que pertencem a grupos e mães que não pertencem. Foi interessante verificar que as mulheres com filhos mais novos (faixa etária dos 0-4 anos) têm uma presença mais significativa em grupos de apoio à maternidade, no Facebook. Pensamos que isso se deve às dúvidas e ao stresse gerado por um primeiro filho ou pela introdução de mais um filho no núcleo familiar, nos primeiros anos em que tal ocorre, procurando por isso mais activamente grupos que ajudem como rede de suporte, para partilhas, apoio emocional e esclarecimento de dúvidas. / A “social network” refers to a structure formed by individuals or organisations that share interests, motivations and common values. A feature shared by several types of social network is the exchange of information, knowledge, interests and efforts, in an attempt to achieve common goals, often potentiating strengths and resources in crisis situations. Recently, we have heard of this concept applied to the internet. Motherhood is, by itself, a moment of crisis in the life of every family and every woman, requiring adaptations and changes. This study aimed to assess online and offline supports (being these connections themselves denominated social networks), in the specific case of motherhood-related issues. It was also intended to confirm whether there was a correlation between these types of support and stress and loneliness levels sensed by mothers. Finally, it was evaluated as well the influence that the children’s age would have on this adherence to motherhood support groups on Facebook. This study had a sample of 170 women (mothers), with ages between 25 and 62 years. The results showed that, although there are no statistically significant differences between the online and offline support, women who belong to Facebook groups tend to feel more support from the available support platforms. It was shown as well that there are no significant differences between loneliness and stress levels among mothers who belong to groups and mothers who do not belong to those groups. It was interesting to find that women with young children (aged 0-4 years old) have a more significant presence in motherhood support groups on Facebook. We think that this is due to the doubts and the stress generated by a first child or the introduction of another child in the household, therefore making sense that they seek, in the early years of the child’s life, groups that help as a support network, for shares, emotional support and answering questions.

O ativismo pode ser percecionado como um conjunto de comportamentos baseados em motivações e valores aliados na solidariedade e cooperação, que visam efetivar mudanças na respetiva sociedade em que o ativista se insere. As tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TIC) vieram permitir que este ativismo migrasse para o espaço digital surgindo assim o ativismo online, ativismo digital ou ciberativismo. Relativamente à relação do ativismo com o suporte social e habilidades sociais, existe uma escassez de pesquisas (nacionais e internacionais) que explorem a relação direta entre os constructos. A partir dos dados recolhidos numa amostra portuguesa, o presente estudo pretende caracterizar e descrever o ativista social (online e/ ou offline), relacionar o ativismo social com o suporte social e as habilidades sociais, de modo a averiguar se o apoio em causas sociais tem impacto na satisfação que o indivíduo retira das relações que estabelece no dia-adia, bem como a existência ou não de um maior grau de habilidades sociais. Metodologia: A amostra deste estudo envolveu 210 participantes, dos quais 154 elementos são do sexo feminino (73,3%) e 56 elementos do sexo masculino (26,7%), com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 73 anos, sendo a média de idades de 31,19 anos (DP = 11,62). O protocolo foi composto por um breve questionário sociodemográfico, questionário sobre ativismo social, Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social (ESSS) e o Inventário de Habilidades Sociais (IHS). Os dados obtidos revelam que os sujeitos que apoiam causas sociais offline apresentam uma menor satisfação relativamente às amizades/ amigos. O grupo de participantes que apoia causas offline (n = 134) apresenta maior habilidade no fator da autoexposição a desconhecidos ou a situações novas. Os que apoiam causas online (n = 96), além de melhor habilidade no fator autoexposição, também apresentam melhor habilidades de conversação e desenvoltura social.

This article introduces a theoretical framework for the analysis of the player character (PC) in offline computer role-playing games (cRPGs). It derives from the assumption that the character constitutes the focal point of the game, around which all the other elements revolve. This underlying observation became the foundation of the Player Character Grid and its constituent Pivot Player Character Model, a conceptual framework illustrating the experience of gameplay as perceived through the PC’s eyes. Although video game characters have been scrutinised from many different perspectives, a systematic framework has not been introduced yet. This study aims to fill that void by proposing a model replicable across the cRPG genre. It has been largely inspired by Anne Ubersfeld’s semiological dramatic character research implemented in Reading Theatre I (1999) and is demonstrated with reference to The Witcher (CD Projekt RED 2007).

Participation Space Studies explore eParticipation in the day-to-day activities of local, citizen-led groups, working to improve their communities. The focus is the relationship between activities and contexts. The concept of a participation space is introduced in order to reify online and offline contexts where people participate in democracy. Participation spaces include websites, blogs, email, social media presences, paper media, and physical spaces. They are understood as sociotechnical systems: assemblages of heterogeneous elements, with relevant histories and trajectories of development and use. This approach enables the parallel study of diverse spaces, on and offline. Participation spaces are investigated within three case studies, centred on interviews and participant observation. Each case concerns a community or activist group, in Scotland. The participation spaces are then modelled using a Socio-Technical Interaction Network (STIN) framework (Kling, McKim and King, 2003). The participation space concept effectively supports the parallel investigation of the diverse social and technical contexts of grassroots democracy and the relationship between the case-study groups and the technologies they use to support their work. Participants’ democratic participation is supported by online technologies, especially email, and they create online communities and networks around their goals. The studies illustrate the mutual shaping relationship between technology and democracy. Participants’ choice of technologies can be understood in spatial terms: boundaries, inhabitants, access, ownership, and cost. Participation spaces and infrastructures are used together and shared with other groups. Non-public online spaces, such as Facebook groups, are vital contexts for eParticipation; further, the majority of participants’ work is non-public, on and offline. It is informational, potentially invisible, work that supports public outputs. The groups involve people and influence events through emotional and symbolic impact, as well as rational argument. Images are powerful vehicles for this and digital images become an increasingly evident and important feature of participation spaces throughout the consecutively conducted case studies. Collaboration of diverse people via social media indicates that these spaces could be understood as boundary objects (Star and Griesemer, 1989). The Participation Space Studies draw from and contribute to eParticipation, social informatics, mediation, social shaping studies, and ethnographic studies of Internet use.

Evaluation of the quality of the environment is essential for human wellness as pollutants in trace amounts can cause serious health problem. Nitrosamines are a group of compounds that are considered potential carcinogens and can be found in drinking water (as disinfection byproducts), foods, beverages and cosmetics. To monitor the level of these compounds to minimize daily intakes, fast and reliable analytical techniques are required. As these compounds are relatively highly polar, extraction and enrichment from environmental samples (aqueous) are challenging. Also, the trend of analytical techniques toward the reduction of sample size and minimization of organic solvent use demands new methods of analysis. In light of fulfilling these requirements, a new method of online preconcentration tailored to an electrokinetic chromatography is introduced. In this method, electroosmotic flow (EOF) was suppressed to increase the interaction time between analyte and micellar phase, therefore the only force to mobilize the neutral analytes is the interaction of analyte with moving micelles. In absence of EOF, polarity of applied potential was switched (negative or positive) to force (anionic or cationic) micelles to move toward the detector. To avoid the excessive band broadening due to longer analysis time caused by slow moving micelles, auxiliary pressure was introduced to boost the micelle movement toward the detector using an in house designed and built apparatus. Applying the external auxiliary pressure significantly reduced the analysis times without compromising separation efficiency. Parameters, such as type of surfactants, composition of background electrolyte (BGE), type of capillary, matrix effect, organic modifiers, etc., were evaluated in optimization of the method. The enrichment factors for targeted analytes were impressive, particularly; cationic surfactants were shown to be suitable for analysis of nitrosamines due to their ability to act as hydrogen bond donors. Ammonium perfluorooctanoate (APFO) also showed remarkable results in term of peak shapes and number of theoretical plates. It was shown that the separation results were best when a high conductivity sample was paired with a BGE of lower conductivity. Using higher surfactant concentrations (up to 200 mM SDS) than usual (50 mM SDS) for micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) improved the sweeping. A new method for micro-extraction and enrichment of highly polar neutral analytes (N-Nitrosamines in particular) based on three-phase drop micro-extraction was introduced and its performance studied. In this method, a new device using some easy-to-find components was fabricated and its operation and application demonstrated. Compared to conventional extraction methods (liquid-liquid extraction), consumption of organic solvents and operation times were significantly lower.

This thesis investigates how web search evaluation can be improved using historical interaction data. Modern search engines combine offline and online evaluation approaches in a sequence of steps that a tested change needs to pass through to be accepted as an improvement and subsequently deployed. We refer to such a sequence of steps as an evaluation pipeline. In this thesis, we consider the evaluation pipeline to contain three sequential steps: an offline evaluation step, an online evaluation scheduling step, and an online evaluation step. In this thesis we show that historical user interaction data can aid in improving the accuracy or efficiency of each of the steps of the web search evaluation pipeline. As a result of these improvements, the overall efficiency of the entire evaluation pipeline is increased. Firstly, we investigate how user interaction data can be used to build accurate offline evaluation methods for query auto-completion mechanisms. We propose a family of offline evaluation metrics for query auto-completion that represents the effort the user has to spend in order to submit their query. The parameters of our proposed metrics are trained against a set of user interactions recorded in the search engine’s query logs. From our experimental study, we observe that our proposed metrics are significantly more correlated with an online user satisfaction indicator than the metrics proposed in the existing literature. Hence, fewer changes will pass the offline evaluation step to be rejected after the online evaluation step. As a result, this would allow us to achieve a higher efficiency of the entire evaluation pipeline. Secondly, we state the problem of the optimised scheduling of online experiments. We tackle this problem by considering a greedy scheduler that prioritises the evaluation queue according to the predicted likelihood of success of a particular experiment. This predictor is trained on a set of online experiments, and uses a diverse set of features to represent an online experiment. Our study demonstrates that a higher number of successful experiments per unit of time can be achieved by deploying such a scheduler on the second step of the evaluation pipeline. Consequently, we argue that the efficiency of the evaluation pipeline can be increased. Next, to improve the efficiency of the online evaluation step, we propose the Generalised Team Draft interleaving framework. Generalised Team Draft considers both the interleaving policy (how often a particular combination of results is shown) and click scoring (how important each click is) as parameters in a data-driven optimisation of the interleaving sensitivity. Further, Generalised Team Draft is applicable beyond domains with a list-based representation of results, i.e. in domains with a grid-based representation, such as image search. Our study using datasets of interleaving experiments performed both in document and image search domains demonstrates that Generalised Team Draft achieves the highest sensitivity. A higher sensitivity indicates that the interleaving experiments can be deployed for a shorter period of time or use a smaller sample of users. Importantly, Generalised Team Draft optimises the interleaving parameters w.r.t. historical interaction data recorded in the interleaving experiments. Finally, we propose to apply the sequential testing methods to reduce the mean deployment time for the interleaving experiments. We adapt two sequential tests for the interleaving experimentation. We demonstrate that one can achieve a significant decrease in experiment duration by using such sequential testing methods. The highest efficiency is achieved by the sequential tests that adjust their stopping thresholds using historical interaction data recorded in diagnostic experiments. Our further experimental study demonstrates that cumulative gains in the online experimentation efficiency can be achieved by combining the interleaving sensitivity optimisation approaches, including Generalised Team Draft, and the sequential testing approaches. Overall, the central contributions of this thesis are the proposed approaches to improve the accuracy or efficiency of the steps of the evaluation pipeline: the offline evaluation frameworks for the query auto-completion, an approach for the optimised scheduling of online experiments, a general framework for the efficient online interleaving evaluation, and a sequential testing approach for the online search evaluation. The experiments in this thesis are based on massive real-life datasets obtained from Yandex, a leading commercial search engine. These experiments demonstrate the potential of the proposed approaches to improve the efficiency of the evaluation pipeline.

Even though much attention has been paid to online consumer behavior, academic studies are deficient in comprehending offline consumer behavior. This study offers a survey of reflections concerning the Portuguese offline consumer behavior by observing how Portuguese adult consumers engage, embrace and act throughout the offline world, i.e., the offline media channels and the customer decision-making process at a store in regard of digital nativity, education and gender. Drawing on an online questionnaire and using a convenience sample of 471 respondents, data was analyzed using descriptive analysis and independent sample t-test analysis. The results observed indicate Portuguese consumers prefer calling or going to a store when they have an operational problem, value the credit card security at a store and that Portuguese females highly value touching and feeling the product at a store. Finally, implications for academics and marketeers are discussed.

This research investigated faking across test administration modes in an employment testing scenario. For the first time, phone administration was included. Participants (N = 91) were randomly allocated to testing mode (telephone, Internet, or pen-and-paper). Participants completed a personality measure under standard instructions and then under instructions to fake as an ideal police applicant. No significant difference in any faked personality domains as a function of administration mode was found. Effect sizes indicated that the influence of administration mode was small. Limitations and future directions are considered. Overall, results indicate that if an individual intends to fake on a self-report test in a vocational assessment scenario, the electronic administration mode in which the test is delivered may be unimportant.

In Italia, l’archeologia pubblica ha subìto negli ultimi anni un accelerazione, grazie ad una maggiore consapevolezza da parte degli archeologi sulla necessità di un dialogo con il pubblico. Sempre più progetti di ricerca archeologica investono risorse nell’organizzazione di iniziative volte a coinvolgere la comunità, sia onsite che online. Ma per valutare effettivamente l’impatto di queste iniziative c’è bisogno di delineare una metodologia condivisa, assente attualmente in Italia: manca una progettualità, una pianificazione, una riflessione critica sull’argomento. Il mio lavoro, inserito all’interno del progetto di “Archeologia dei paesaggi di Ravenna” dell’Università di Bologna, ha l’obiettivo di individuare le strategie comunicative migliori per coinvolgere il pubblico verso tematiche storico-archeologiche, ricorrendo in particolare all’utilizzo dei social media, e di individuare una metodologia efficace per la realizzazione e valutazione delle iniziative di archeologia pubblica nell’ambito della ricerca universitaria. Essendoci la necessità di una pianificazione, ho deciso di considerare il mio progetto come se fosse un’azienda con un prodotto o servizio da portare sul mercato. In tal caso, l’azienda deve ricorrere alla stesura di un piano marketing, un documento che formalizza le analisi e le conseguenti decisioni di marketing per un determinato prodotto/mercato, in un determinato arco temporale/spaziale al fine di conseguire gli obiettivi prefissati.

The aim of this study is to test the feasibility and reproducibility of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) evaluations of the fetal brains in cases of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). From May 2011 to June 2012, 24 patients with severe TTTS underwent MRI scans for evaluation of the fetal brains. Datasets were analyzed offline on axial DW images and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps by two radiologists. The subjective evaluation was described as the absence or presence of water diffusion restriction. The objective evaluation was performed by the placement of 20-mm(2) circular regions of interest on the DW image and ADC maps. Subjective interobserver agreement was assessed by the kappa correlation coefficient. Objective intraobserver and interobserver agreements were assessed by proportionate Bland-Altman tests. Seventy-four DW-MRI scans were performed. Sixty of them (81.1%) were considered to be of good quality. Agreement between the radiologists was 100% for the absence or presence of diffusion restriction of water. For both intraobserver and interobserver agreement of ADC measurements, proportionate Bland-Altman tests showed average percentage differences of less than 1.5% and 95% CI of less than 18% for all sites evaluated. Our data demonstrate that DW-MRI evaluation of the fetal brain in TTTS is feasible and reproducible.

This work encompasses a direct and coherent strategy to synthesise a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) capable of extracting fluconazole from its sample. The MIP was successfully prepared from methacrylic acid (functional monomer), ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (crosslinker) and acetonitrile (porogenic solvent) in the presence of fluconazole as the template molecule through a non-covalent approach. The non-imprinted polymer (NIP) was prepared following the same synthetic scheme, but in the absence of the template. The data obtained from scanning electronic microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and nitrogen Brunauer-Emmett-Teller plot helped to elucidate the structural as well as the morphological characteristics of the MIP and NIP. The application of MIP as a sorbent was demonstrated by packing it in solid phase extraction cartridges to extract fluconazole from commercial capsule samples through an offline analytical procedure. The quantification of fluconazole was accomplished through UPLC-MS, which resulted in LOD≤1.63×10(-10) mM. Furthermore, a high percentage recovery of 91±10% (n=9) was obtained. The ability of the MIP for selective recognition of fluconazole was evaluated by comparison with the structural analogues, miconazole, tioconazole and secnidazole, resulting in percentage recoveries of 51, 35 and 32%, respectively.

Fault resistance is a critical component of electric power systems operation due to its stochastic nature. If not considered, this parameter may interfere in fault analysis studies. This paper presents an iterative fault analysis algorithm for unbalanced three-phase distribution systems that considers a fault resistance estimate. The proposed algorithm is composed by two sub-routines, namely the fault resistance and the bus impedance. The fault resistance sub-routine, based on local fault records, estimates the fault resistance. The bus impedance sub-routine, based on the previously estimated fault resistance, estimates the system voltages and currents. Numeric simulations on the IEEE 37-bus distribution system demonstrate the algorithm`s robustness and potential for offline applications, providing additional fault information to Distribution Operation Centers and enhancing the system restoration process. A new digital computer mock circulatory system has been developed in order to replicate the physiologic and pathophysiologic characteristics of the human cardiovascular system. The computer performs the acquisition of pressure, flow, and temperature in an open loop system. A computer program has been developed in Labview programing environment to evaluate all these physical parameters. The acquisition system was composed of pressure, flow, and temperature sensors and also signal conditioning modules. In this study, some results of flow, cardiac frequencies, pressures, and temperature were evaluated according to physiologic ventricular states. The results were compared with literature data. In further works, performance investigations will be conducted on a ventricular assist device and endoprosthesis. Also, this device should allow for evaluation of several kinds of vascular diseases.
