The effect of time of exposure, solution concentration and temperature on the osmotic concentration of banana (slices of 11 mm thickness) was studied in aqueous sucrose solutions. The selectivity of the cellular tissues was reduced by steam blanching the banana slices before osmotic treatment. Effective diffusion coefficients for the loss of water and the increase in sucrose content were determined according to Fick's Law applied to a two-dimensional body; calculated on the basis of the concentration of various components in the liquid phase impenetrating the fruit. These coefficients revealed values similar to binary diffusion coefficients for pure sucrose solutions.

The objective of this research is to present a study on a relationship between the local head loss in connection of emitters in pipes with different diameters used in drip irrigation, with the online geometry of the emitter connectors, that allows an easy quantification of such head loss regarding of the size of the connectors. The experiment was carried out according to the Reynolds Numbers at a turbulent flow interval, obtained by the variation of the pipe outflow at a constant temperature of water. The results indicated that the friction factor of the Darcy-Weisbach equation can be estimated by the Blasius equation with the coefficients b = 0.300 and m = 0.25, for the above mentioned pipes. The head losses produced by the connections of the emitters, in relation to the pipe without emitter, was of 62%. A relationship between the kinetic load coefficient (K) and the index of blockage (IO) provoked by the online connector is presented by an algebraic equation which shows a coefficient of adjustment of approximately 96%.

In a ball-on-disc wear test, an alumina ceramic body sliding against a silicon nitride ceramic body in water achieved an ultra-low friction coefficient (ULFC) of 0.004. The profilometer and EDX measurements indicated that the ULFC regime in this unmated Al2O3-Si3N4 pair was achieved because of the formation of a flat and smooth interface of nanometric roughness, which favored the hydrodynamic lubrication. The triboreactions formed silicon and aluminum hydroxides which contributed to decrease roughness and shear stress at the contact interface. This behavior enables the development of low energy loss water-based tribological systems using oxide ceramics. 13 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This research addresses the application of friction stir welding (FWS) of titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V. Friction stir welding is a recent process, developed in the 1990s for aluminum joining; this joining process is being increasingly applied in many industries from basic materials, such as steel alloys, to high performance alloys, such as titanium. It is a process in great development and has its economic advantages when compared to conventional welding. For high performance alloys such as titanium, a major problem to overcome is the construction of tools that can withstand the extreme process environment. In the literature, the possibilities approached are only few tungsten alloys. Early experiments with tools made of cemented carbide (WC) showed optimistic results consistent with the literature. It was initially thought that WC tools may be an option to the FSW process since it is possible to improve the wear resistance of the tool. The metallographic analysis of the welds did not show primary defects of voids (tunneling) or similar internal defects due to processing, only defects related to tool wear which can cause loss of weld quality. The severe tool wear caused loss of surface quality and inclusions of fragments inside the joining, which should be corrected or mitigated by means of coating techniques on tool, or the replacement of cemented carbide with tungsten alloys, as found in the literature.

The level of improvement in the audiological results of Baha(®) users mainly depends on the patient's preoperative hearing thresholds and the type of Baha sound processor used. This investigation shows correlations between the preoperative hearing threshold and postoperative aided thresholds and audiological results in speech understanding in quiet of 84 Baha users with unilateral conductive hearing loss, bilateral conductive hearing loss and bilateral mixed hearing loss. Secondly, speech understanding in noise of 26 Baha users with different Baha sound processors (Compact, Divino, and BP100) is investigated. Linear regression between aided sound field thresholds and bone conduction (BC) thresholds of the better ear shows highest correlation coefficients and the steepest slope. Differences between better BC thresholds and aided sound field thresholds are smallest for mid-frequencies (1 and 2 kHz) and become larger at 0.5 and 4 kHz. For Baha users, the gain in speech recognition in quiet can be expected to lie in the order of magnitude of the gain in their hearing threshold. Compared to its predecessor sound processors Baha(®) Compact and Baha(®) Divino, Baha(®) BP100 improves speech understanding in noise significantly by +0.9 to +4.6 dB signal-to-noise ratio, depending on the setting and the use of directional microphone. For Baha users with unilateral and bilateral conductive hearing loss and bilateral mixed hearing loss, audiological results in aided sound field thresholds can be estimated with the better BC hearing threshold. The benefit in speech understanding in quiet can be expected to be similar to the gain in their sound field hearing threshold. The most recent technology of Baha sound processor improves speech understanding in noise by an order of magnitude that is well perceived by users and which can be very useful in everyday life.

The deviation of calibration coefficients from five cup anemometer models over time was analyzed. The analysis was based on a series of laboratory calibrations between January 2001 and August 2010. The analysis was performed on two different groups of anemometers: (1) anemometers not used for any industrial purpose (that is, just stored); and (2) anemometers used in different industrial applications (mainly in the field—or outside—applications like wind farms). Results indicate a loss of performance of the studied anemometers over time. In the case of the unused anemometers the degradation shows a clear pattern. In the case of the anemometers used in the field, the data analyzed also suggest a loss of performance, yet the degradation does not show a clear trend. A recalibration schedule is proposed based on the observed performances variations

ABSTRACT The thesis is organized in a volume of Memory composed of eleven chapters that make up the body of the thesis and other Appendices volume entitled "Geotechnical characterization of basis of the soils of Spain" that combines the characteristics of texture, permeability, moisture-suction, erosionability, and shear strength of forty-two profiles of soils representative of the types of the soil of Spain map in the form of pictures. These pictures have been produced originally by the student during their studies to obtain the DEA of the research, except those of the shear strength, also been done by the PhD student in an original way, but already at the stage of drafting of the thesis. Chapter 1 "Introducción" describes the motivation, background, scope and content of the thesis, ordered according to the index that is included. The Chapters: 2 "Weathering, 3 “Water Balance” and 4 “moisture characteristics" are the "State of the art" at the present time of geotechnical environmental issues related to the degradation of the Earth's surface and the slope stability. Chapter 2 after clarify some general information, provides elements for the quantification of the alteration of rocks as "Weinert climate index" and soil erosion as the "universal equation of loss of soil (U.S.L.E.)" Chapter 3, on the basis of the phenomena of precipitation and evapotranspiration, raises the water balance in sheds with instruments to evaluate infiltration and runoff, essential concepts into the resistance and erosionability water-soil joint. Values of soils coefficients of infiltration in saturated and unsaturated conditions from the Spain map of profiles are collected in the Appendices A1 and A2. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the study of this joint “soil-water”, with the definition of concepts that characterize it, based on the relationship between the contents of both elements or “moisture”, their maximum and minimum values and the way in which water is retained by the soil. This chapter ends with the concept of “Soil Water Characteristic curve (SWCC)", which linked the water content of a soil with the stress that it is retained (ua-uw) "suction" or its expression more usual "pF". The SWCC of the profiles of soils of the Spain soils Map are attached in the Appendix 3. In Chapter 5 “Soils shear strength”,is detailed the influence that they have on the resistance of soils factors such as the passage of time, the content of moisture and the presence and type of vegetation on the surface of the studied soil. Chapter 6 "Assessment of erosion", analyses the soil erodibility factor "Kfactor" of the U.S.L.E., its evaluation based on texture, structure and permeability of the soil, with the estimate for forty-two profiles of soils on the Spain Soils Map, contained in Appendix 4. Chapter 7 "Design methodology" some considerations are made in the first part geo-environmental design applicable to the study of the problems of instabilities in slopes. The second part constitutes the core of the thesis with the proposal of “estimation of parameters of shear strength”, of the soils consistent with theories and analytical methodology outlined in the previous chapters. Appendix A 5 presents the values of the coulombians parameters of shear strength, "c and Ф" according to the characterization of climate from the index of Thornthwaite, in design for natural moisture conditions maximum and minimum of forty-two profils of Spain Soils Map Chapter 8 "Application to real cases" is considered of great interest to constitute a true continuation of the second part of the previous chapter, developing the methodology exposed it to four problems of civil-works infrastructure, related to problems of erosion and landslides in slopes. Chapter 9 "Tests of reference" is included as point of support (reference) to the theories exposed, assessing the suitability of the types of tests and types of selected soils (Geotechnical laboratory of CEDEX and laboratory Hongkong University of Science and Technology), used to obtain, by deduced correlations, of curves SWCC of soils profiles on the Spain Soils Map, included in Appendix A. 3, as it was mentioned before. Chapter 10 "Conclusions and future research lines" are running first conclusions which, in the opinion of the candidate, can be extracted with interest of this thesis, and then, it outlines some possible lines of research, mainly experimental, which would complement the advances arising from this thesis or could clarify and open new interpretations of natural phenomena of erosion and slope stability in which it has focused. Finally, in Chapter 11 "Bibliography" 328 references have been included which reflect a broad and fairly comprehensive view of the subject matter, obtained complementing those of the previous theses on this singular issue ("Vegetation stabilizing effect on slopes", L Fort 1975, and "Determination of the characteristics of friction in the contact soil-geotextile to different-suctions, through special laboratory equipment", E Asanza 2009) with some of them from of the candidate (9) and the others from of the considered as the most interesting of recent conferences on unsaturated soils, "Unsat 95", "Unsat2002" and "Unsat 2011" among others.

ABSTRACT Slipping accidents in building environments are a serious problem involving numerous fatal accidents, loss of work days, incapacity and great costs. Prediction of such accidents is difficult due to the number of factors involved, many of which are not controllable, like footwear or users behavior. To prevent a slip the coefficient of friction provided by the combination floor-footwear-contaminant must be greater than the required coefficient of friction for stability, that depends on the step length and the walking speed among other factors. It is then necessary to measure the contribution of the floor to the slipping risk so it can be limited to an adequate extent. In the recent history many apparatuses have been developed in order to measure this contribution in the form of friction coefficients —dynamic, static or even transition COFs— but none of them seems to be internationally accepted as sufficiently valid. The Spanish Building Code, which has recently undergone a big change to a performance based code, has been innovative in this area, introducing for the first time a measurement of this contribution by means of the friction pendulum test. However, due to the European disagreement about an unique test for slip resistance, and to the limitations of the European standards derived from it, the Spanish Building Code relies on standards that do not take into account all possible methods. As a consequence, smooth floors have been seriously affected and cannot be installed in almost any place, not even in dry areas where the risk of slipping is much lower. The aim of this research is to analyze these problems associated with the pendulum test and resolve them proposing some changes to the test conditions in order to represent in a proper manner the real risk that is to be considered: the slip in dry conditions. Relevant scientific literature has been studied as well as Spanish and foreign codes and standards. Potential problems of the pendulum test in dry conditions have been detected and an experiment has been designed to confirm or discard them, testing both friction coefficient and surface roughness. The results of the experiment have permitted to validate the pendulum test in dry conditions and to suggest a complementary measurement of the surface roughness to help evaluate the slip resistance of a floor. These results have also permitted to develop an amendment to the building code that will appear soon. In the meanwhile it has been included in a support document issued by the administration to resolve this urgent problem.

The pumping characteristics of four Australian honey samples were investigated in a straight pipe. Six flow rates (100-500 kg h(-1)) were studied at three temperatures (35-50degreesC). The pressure loss increased with an increase in the length of the pipe, as the low rate was increased and as the temperature was reduced. In the 25.4 mm-pipe, the Reynolds number ranged from 0.2-32.0 and are substantially less than the critica value (2040-2180) for laminar condition in the system. The relationship between the wall shear stress and shear rate approximated power-law behaviour, and the power-law index was not significantly (p>0.05) different from 1.0. The honey samples exhibited Newtonian behaviour at all the temperatures and this was confirmed by rheometric studies using Couette geometry. A friction chart was generated independent of temperature and the type of honey. An equation was developed to predict the pressure loss of the honey in a typical pipeline at any temperature once the viscosity-temperature relationship had been established.

Pin on disc wear machines were used to study the boundary lubricated friction and wear of AISI 52100 steel sliding partners. Boundary conditions were obtained by using speed and load combinations which resulted in friction coefficients in excess of 0.1. Lubrication was achieved using zero, 15 and 1000 ppm concentrations of an organic dimeric acid additive in a hydrocarbon base stock. Experiments were performed for sliding speeds of 0.2, 0.35 and 0.5 m/s for a range of loads up to 220 N. Wear rate, frictional force and pin temperature were continually monitored throughout tests and where possible complementary methods of measurement were used to improve accuracy. A number of analytical techniques were used to examine wear surfaces, debris and lubricants, namely: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), optical microscopy, Back scattered Electron Detection (BSED) and several metallographic techniques. Friction forces and wear rates were found to vary linearly with load for any given combination of speed and additive concentration. The additive itself was found to act as a surface oxidation inhibitor and as a lubricity enhancer, particularly in the case of the higher (1000 ppm) concentration. Wear was found to be due to a mild oxidational mechanism at low additive concentrations and a more severe metallic mechanism at higher concentrations with evidence of metallic delamination in the latter case. Scuffing loads were found to increase with increasing additive concentration and decrease with increasing speed as would be predicted by classical models of additive behaviour as an organo-metallic soap film. Heat flow considerations tended to suggest that surface temperature was not the overriding controlling factor in oxidational wear and a model is proposed which suggests oxygen concentration in the lubricant is the controlling factor in oxide growth and wear.

A description of the background to testing friction materials for automotive brakes explains the need for a rapid, inexpensive means of assessing their behaviour in a way which is both accurate and meaningful. Various methods of controlling inertia dynamometers to simulate road vehicles are rejected in favour of programming by means of a commercially available XY plotter. Investigation of brake service conditions is used to set up test schedules, and a dynamometer programming unit built to enable service conditions on vehicles to be simulated on a full scale dynamometer. A technique is developed by which accelerated testing can be achieved without operating under overload conditions, saving time and cost without sacrificing validity. The development of programming by XY plotter is described, with a method of operating one XY plotter to programme the machine, monitor its own behaviour, and plot its own results in logical sequence. Commissioning trials are described and the generation of reproducible results in frictional behaviour and material durability is discussed. Teclmiques are developed to cross check the operation of the machine in retrospect, and retrospectively correct results in the event of malfunctions. Sensitivity errors in the measuring circuits are displayed between calibrations, whilst leaving the recorded results almost unaffected by error. Typical results of brake lining tests are used to demonstrate the range of performance parameters which can be studied by use of the machine. Successful test investigations completed on the machine are reported, including comments on behaviour of cast iron drums and discs. The machine shows that materials can repeat their complex friction/ temperature/speed/pressure relationships at a reproducibility of the order of +-0.003u and +~ 0.0002 in. thickness loss during wear tests. Discussion of practical and academic implications completes the report with recommendations for further work in both fields.

This study provides experimental and theoretical evidence that the coating of the inner surface of copper pipes with superhydrophobic (SH) materials induces a Cassie state flow regime on the flow of water. This results in an increase in the fluid's dimensionless velocity distribution coefficient, a, which gives rise to an increase in the apparent Reynolds number, which may approach the "plug flow state". Experimental evidence from the SH coating of a classic unsteady-state flow system resulted in a significant decrease in the friction factor and associated energy loss. The friction factor decrease can be attributed to an increase in the apparent Reynolds number. The study demonstrates that the Cassie effects imposed by SH coating can be quantitatively shown to decrease the frictional resistance to flow in commercial pipes.
