Työ liittyy Lappeenrannan teknillisessä yliopistossa voimalaitostekniikan laboratoriossa vuonna 2004 aloitettuun sulapoltto- ja sulakaasutustutkimukseen. Päätavoitteena on suunnitella, rakentaa ja testata pienen kokoluokan sulakaasutuslaitetta. Kirjallisuusosassa luodaan lyhyt katsaus viime vuosina muualla tehtyyn sulapoltto- ja sulakaasutustutkimukseen. Laskentaosassa mallinnetaan sulapoltto- ja sulakaasutusprosessia eri polttoainekoostumuksilla. Tutkimusosassa suunnitellaan ja rakennetaan sulakaasutuskoelaitteisto kaasutuskokeita varten. Lopussa on kehittyneemmän tutkimuslaitteiston alustavaa suunnittelua.

Tämä diplomityö on tehty Andritz Oy:lle Washers & Filters tuoteryhmään. Työ on osa 3D-suunnittelujärjestelmän käyttöönottoprojektia. Tavoitteena on arvioida uuden laitesuunnittelujärjestelmän vaikutuksia yrityksen tietojärjestelmiin ja toimintatapoihin sekä etsiä potentiaalisia tulevaisuuden kehityskohteita. Suunnittelutietoa hyödyntäviä sidosryhmien edustajia haastattelemalla selvitettiin järjestelmille ja ohjelmistoille asetettavia vaatimuksia. Ohjelmistoihin tutustumalla saatiin käsitys niiden nykytilasta ja kehityssuunnista. 3D-geometrian hyödyntämiseen perustuvilla järjestelmillä voidaan poistaa päällekäistä työtä sekä lyhentää läpimenoaikoja suunnittelussa ja valmistuksessa sijoittamalla työvaiheita rinnakkain. Suurimmat 3D-suunnittelun edut saavutetaan tuotekehitysvaiheessa, tuotemuutoksia tehtäessä sekä valmistusprosesseja suunniteltaessa. Ongelmallisimmat osa-alueet tietojärjestelmien kehittämisessä ovat ensi-sijaisesti tiedonsiirto ohjelmistojen välillä, työntekijöiden muutosvastarinta sekä laadukkaiden järjestelmien korkea hinta. Laajojen tietojärjestelmä-projektien läpivienti on hyvin haastavaa ja onnistuminen vaatii kaikkien sidosryhmien mukana olemista ja tarkkaa projektin koordinointia.

Teollusuussovelluksissa vaaditaan nykyisin yhä useammin reaaliaikaista tiedon käsittelyä. Luotettavuus on yksi tärkeimmistä reaaliaikaiseen tiedonkäsittelyyn kykenevän järjestelmän ominaisuuksista. Sen saavuttamiseksi on sekä laitteisto, että ohjelmisto testattava. Tämän työn päätavoitteena on laitteiston testaaminen ja laitteiston testattavuus, koska luotettava laitteistoalusta on perusta tulevaisuuden reaaliaikajärjestelmille. Diplomityössä esitetään digitaaliseen signaalinkäsittelyyn soveltuvan prosessorikortin suunnittelu. Prosessorikortti on tarkoitettu sähkökoneiden ennakoivaa kunnonvalvontaa varten. Uusimmat DFT (Desing for Testability) menetelmät esitellään ja niitä sovelletaan prosessorikortin sunnittelussa yhdessä vanhempien menetelmien kanssa. Kokemukset ja huomiot menetelmien soveltuvuudesta raportoidaan työn lopussa. Työn tavoitteena on kehittää osakomponentti web -pohjaiseen valvontajärjestelmään, jota on kehitetty Sähkötekniikan osastolla Lappeenrannan teknillisellä korkeakoululla.

Meeting design is one of the most critical prerequisites of the success of facilitated meetings but how to achieve the success is not yet fully understood. This study presents a descriptive model of the design of technology supported meetings based on literature findings about the key factors contributing to the success of collaborative meetings, and linking these factors to the meeting design steps by exploring how facilitators consider the factors in practice in their design process. The empirical part includes a multiple-case study conducted among 12 facilitators. The case concentrates on the GSS laboratory at LUT, which has been working on facilitation and GSS for the last fifteen years. The study also includes ‘control’ cases from two comparable institutions. The results of this study highlight both the variances and commonalities among facilitators in how they design collaboration processes. The design thinking of facilitators of all levels of experience is found to be largely consistent wherefore the key design factors as well as their role across the design process can be outlined. Session goals, group composition, supporting technology, motivational aspects, physical constraints, and correct design practices were found to outline the key factors in design thinking. These factors are further categorized into three factor types of controllable, constraining, and guiding design factors, because the study findings indicate the factor type to have an effect on the factor’s importance in design. Furthermore, the order of considering these factors in the design process is outlined.

En aquests moments, el mercat no es troba en una bona situació, per aquest motiu les empreses han de buscar noves maneres de créixer, expandir-se i noves formes d’interactuar amb els clients. La idea original d’aquest projecte sorgeix de la necessitat de disposar d’una manera diferent de promocionar-se i oferir nous serveis a través d’internet mitjançant una pàgina web. Degut a la situació actual, el preu és un aspecte molt important i influent a l’hora de realitzar una obra. Per aquest motiu es va pensar que seria molt interessant que el client pogués demanar de forma fàcil i ràpida un pressupost, i a l’instant tingués un preu orientatiu del que li pot costar la obra. D’aquesta manera l’interessat s’estalvia i agilitza molts passos previs abans de començar una obra. Després d’analitzar quina era la millor manera de portar a terme el projecte informàtic, s’ha determinat que la pàgina web es desenvoluparà utilitzant els llenguatges HTML i PHP combinant-lo amb el framework CodeIgniter. El disseny de la web es realitzarà mitjançant fulles d’estil CSS conjuntament amb el framework BootStrap. Per realitzar l’aplicació web que realitza els pressupostos s’utilitzarà AJAX i jQuery perquè d’aquesta manera el procés sigui dinàmic. L’entorn de desenvolupament escollit és el NetBeans i per provar el projecte s’utilitza el XAMPP. Un usuari només necessitarà un navegador i connexió a internet per fer servir totes les funcions de la web. Podrà realitzar pressupostos, concertar visites, contactar i per suposat veure tota la part informativa de la pàgina

Julkisen sektorin kiinteistötuotannossa toteutetaan kasvavassa määrin julkisen ja yksityisen sektorin yhteistyötä, jossa yksityinen yritys ottaa vastuun kiinteistöön liittyvistä suunnittelu-, rakentamis- ja ylläpitotoimista pitkäksi ajanjaksoksi. Työn tavoitteena on arvioida elinkaarimallilla toteuttavien kiinteistöhankkeiden toteutusvaihtoehdot, sekä kartoittaa elinkaarihankkeen sisältämiä riskejä hankkeen suunnitteluvaiheessa. Tutkimus suoritetaan kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena, jota tuetaan tarvittavilla kvantitatiivista tietoa hyödyntävillä laskelmilla. Tutkimusaineistona käytetään aihepiiriin liittyviä akateemisia julkaisuja ja oppikirjoja. Työn toimeksiantajan YIT:n kautta tutkimukseen on saatu arvokasta asiantuntemusta ja materiaalia. Elinkaarihankkeiden hankintamenettelyksi suositellaan kilpailullista neuvottelumenettelyä. Kilpailullinen neuvottelumenettely mahdollistaa tilaajan ja palveluntuottajien välisen dialogin hankintamenettelyn aikana, jolloin osapuolet voivat yhteistyössä valita sopivimman toteutusmallin. Hankkeiden rahoitus voidaan toteuttaa tilaajan rahoituksella tai yksityisrahoituksella. Rahoituksen näkökulmasta tilaajan oma rahoitus on edullisin, mikä ei kuitenkaan vähennä elinkaarimallista saatavia etuja perinteiseen urakointiin verrattuna. Laskelman perusteella tilaajan rahoituksen ja yksityisrahoituksen keskimääräisessä korkotasossa (WACC) on eroa 2,8 %. Projektiyhtiön perustaminen tekee rahoituksesta entistä kalliimpaa, koska taseeseen kohdistuviin kustannuksiin lisätään projektiyhtiön oman pääoman tuottovaatimusta vastaava korko. Palveluntuottajan kannalta olennaiset riskit ovat rakennusvaiheen viivästyminen, kiinteistön käytettävyyden ja soveltuvuuden puutteista aiheutuvat muutostyöt. Palvelumaksun sitominen huonosti ylläpidon todellista kulurakennetta kuvaavaan elinkustannusindeksiin tulee pitkällä sopimuskaudella vähentämään palveluntuottajan toiminnan kannattavuutta. Kiinteistön ylläpidon kustannusindeksi on vuosina 2005–2011 noussut 2,3 % nopeammin vuodessa kuin elinkustannusindeksi.

ABSTRACT Soy harvest matches seasons with shortage of dry matter supply for ruminant feeding in most Brazilian soy-growing areas. Agricultural machinery-producing companies must have market perception, observing new opportunities and developing equipment to meet costumers’ needs. This paper aims to design, build, and test a device to collect soybean crop residues from the combine cleaning mechanism, consisting mainly of vegetable straw (chaff), and the other plant parts (stems) remain being deposited onto the ground. For equipment designing, we made use of the architectural design methodology proposed in the reference model for the agricultural machinery development process. The equipment was designed and built following the proposed methodology, then installed and put into operation in a John Deere 1165 combine. After initial testing and few adjustments, the device showed satisfactory chaff-collecting performance. The equipment consists of a screw conveyor assembled transversely to the combine and a centrifugal fan assembled on the side. The collected chaff is dumped into a trailer towed by tractor.

Tämä kandityön aihe liittyy LUT Energialla lukuvuonna 2012 – 2013 käynnissä olevaan tutkimukseen, jossa tutkitaan sähkömoottorin laakerivirtojen syntyä. Tätä tutkimusta varten tarvittiin sähkömoottorin etäohjausjärjestelmä, jonka avulla tutkimuksessa käytettävän sähkömoottorin käyttäytymistä voitaisiin tutkia erilaisien käyttöprofiileiden funktiona. Tässä kandityössä suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan edellä kuvattu järjestelmä. Toteutuksessa hyödynnetään nykyaikaista automaatiotekniikkaa, joka yhdessä Ethernet-lähiverkkotekniikan kanssa mahdollistaa etäohjauksen. Valmiin etäohjausjärjestelmän avulla käyttäjä pystyy sekä käynnistämään että sammuttamaan sähkömoottorin, ja määrittämään käyttöprofiilin ON- ja OFF-tilojen ajalliset kestot sekä käyntinopeudet.

This experimental study examined the effects of cooperative learning and expliciUimpliGit instruction on student achievement and attitudes toward working in cooperative groups. Specifically, fourth- and fifth-grade students (n=48) were randomly assigned to two conditions: cooperative learning with explicit instruction and cooperative learning with implicit instruction. All participants were given initial training either explicitly or implicitly in cooperative learning procedures via 10 one-hour sessions. Following the instruction period, all students participated in completing a group project related to a famous artists unit. It was hypothesized that the explicit instruction training would enhance students' scores on the famous artists test and the group projects, as well as improve students' attitudes toward cooperative learning. Although the explicit training group did not achieve significantly higher scores on the famous artists test, significant differences were found in group project results between the explicit and implicit groups. The explicit group also exhibited more favourable and positive attitudes toward cooperative learning. The findings of this study demonstrate that combining cooperative learning with explicit instruction is an effective classroom strategy and a useful practice for presenting and learning new information, as well as working in groups with success.

La vitamine E (VE) est parfois préconisée pour le traitement de l’arthrose chez le chien, par contre aucune étude n’a documenté cette efficacité. L’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer l’effet d’une forte dose de VE alimentaire sur l’inflammation et la douleur arthrosique chez le chien. Deux groupes de chiens avec arthrose provoquée par section du ligament croisé crânial du membre postérieur droit ; un groupe contrôle (n=8) et un groupe supplémenté avec la VE (n=7), ont été suivis selon un design parallèle, randomisé et en aveugle. La supplémentation a été commencée 1 jour après la chirurgie avec une dose de 400 UI/animal/jour par voie orale pendant 56 jours. Les évaluations objectives (activité électrodermique, EDA) et subjectives (VAS, NRS) de la douleur ont été faites avant la chirurgie J0, à J28 et à J55 après chirurgie. La détermination de la concentration synoviale des marqueurs de l’inflammation (IL-1β, PGE2 et NOx) et l’étude lésionnelle ont été faites après l’euthanasie à J56. Une comparaison unilatérale avec un seuil alpha de 10% a été réalisée. Les concentrations synoviales de PGE2 et de NOx étaient faibles chez le groupe supplémenté en VE par rapport au contrôle (P=0,03 et P<0,0001 respectivement). Les valeurs de VAS, NRS et EDA ont montré une tendance constante à l’amélioration de la douleur dans le groupe traité, avec des résultats significatifs obtenus pour VAS à J55 et pour EDA à J28 (P ajusté = 0,07 dans les deux cas). L’analyse histologique du cartilage articulaire a montré une réduction significative des scores lésionnels dans le groupe traité. C’est la première fois qu’une étude menée chez le chien avec arthrose, a montré qu’une forte dose en VE alimentaire permet de réduire les marqueurs de l’inflammation articulaire, les lésions histologiques cartilagineuses et permet aussi d’améliorer les signes de la douleur associe à l’arthrose.

Le domaine des énergies est au cœur des préoccupations technologiques, politiques et économiques de notre société moderne. Ce domaine nécessite une compréhension minimale du concept scientifique de l’énergie. Elle est selon nous essentielle à toute formation citoyenne. Nous avons dans un premier temps, à partir de considérations théoriques et pratiques, examiné pourquoi ce domaine si important dans notre société technologique est si peu abordé dans le cursus scolaire québécois? Pourquoi se contente-t-on d’un enseignement théorique et discursif de ce concept? Pourquoi, au contraire de tout enseignement scientifique, n’a-t-on pas envisagé de situations d’apprentissages en laboratoire pour l’étude des énergies? Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons proposé une idée de solution concrète et réaliste pour répondre à l’ensemble de ces questions. Une solution qui invite les élèves à s’investir de manière constructive dans des activités de laboratoire afin de s’approprier ces concepts. Pour ce faire, nous avons conçu des variables globales énergies qui ont permis aux élèves de les mesurer et d’expérimenter facilement des transformations énergétiques. Cette recherche de développement technologique en éducation consiste donc à profiter des nouveaux développements technologiques de l’informatique et de la micro-électronique pour concevoir, réaliser et mettre à l’essai un environnement informatisé d’apprentissage en laboratoire pour les sciences et la technologie. Par ce que l’énergie est au confluent de trois domaines, cet environnement a été conçu pour supporter dans une même activité l’apprentissage des mathématiques, des sciences et de la technologie. Cette intégration recommandée par les nouveaux programmes est, selon nous, essentielle à la compréhension des concepts liés à l’énergie et à ses transformations. Par cette activité d’apprentissage multidisciplinaire, nous voulons, via une approche empirique et concrète, aborder ces problèmes de transformations énergétiques afin de donner aux élèves la capacité de perfectionner les prototypes qu’ils construisent en technologie de manière à améliorer leurs performances. Nous avons montré que cette démarche technoscientifique, assimilable à la conception d’un schème expérimental en sciences, favorise la compréhension des concepts liés aux énergies et à leurs transformations. Ce développement, ouvert à l’investigation scientifique, apporte un bénéfice didactique, non seulement, pour des enseignants en exercices et des étudiants-maîtres, mais aussi pour des élèves de 5ème année du niveau secondaire, ce que nous avons démontré dans une mise à l’essai empirique.

The Complex Adaptive Systems, Cognitive Agents and Distributed Energy (CASCADE) project is developing a framework based on Agent Based Modelling (ABM). The CASCADE Framework can be used both to gain policy and industry relevant insights into the smart grid concept itself and as a platform to design and test distributed ICT solutions for smart grid based business entities. ABM is used to capture the behaviors of diff erent social, economic and technical actors, which may be defi ned at various levels of abstraction. It is applied to understanding their interactions and can be adapted to include learning processes and emergent patterns. CASCADE models ‘prosumer’ agents (i.e., producers and/or consumers of energy) and ‘aggregator’ agents (e.g., traders of energy in both wholesale and retail markets) at various scales, from large generators and Energy Service Companies down to individual people and devices. The CASCADE Framework is formed of three main subdivisions that link models of electricity supply and demand, the electricity market and power fl ow. It can also model the variability of renewable energy generation caused by the weather, which is an important issue for grid balancing and the profi tability of energy suppliers. The development of CASCADE has already yielded some interesting early fi ndings, demonstrating that it is possible for a mediating agent (aggregator) to achieve stable demandfl attening across groups of domestic households fi tted with smart energy control and communication devices, where direct wholesale price signals had previously been found to produce characteristic complex system instability. In another example, it has demonstrated how large changes in supply mix can be caused even by small changes in demand profi le. Ongoing and planned refi nements to the Framework will support investigation of demand response at various scales, the integration of the power sector with transport and heat sectors, novel technology adoption and diffusion work, evolution of new smart grid business models, and complex power grid engineering and market interactions.

The UK new-build housing sector is facing dual pressures to expand supply, whilst delivering against tougher planning and Building Regulation requirements; predominantly in the areas of sustainability. The sector is currently responding by significantly scaling up production and incorporating new technical solutions into new homes. This trajectory of up-scaling and technical innovation has been of research interest; but this research has primarily focus on the ‘upstream’ implications for house builders’ business models and standardised design templates. There has been little attention, though, to the potential ‘downstream’ implications of the ramping up of supply and the introduction of new technologies for build quality and defects. This paper contributes to our understanding of the ‘downstream’ implications through a synthesis of the current UK defect literature with respect to new-build housing. It is found that the prevailing emphasis in the literature is limited to the responsibility, pathology and statistical analysis of defects (and failures). The literature does not extend to how house builders individually and collectively, in practice, collect and learn from defects information. The paper concludes by describing an ongoing collaborative research programme with the National House Building Council (NHBC) to: (a) understand house builders’ localised defects analysis procedures, and their current knowledge feedback loops to inform risk management strategies; and, (b) building on this understanding, design and test action research interventions to develop new data capture, learning processes and systems to reduce targeted defects.

Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate in vivo the revascularization and the apical and periapical repair after endodontic treatment using 2 techniques for root canal disinfection (apical negative pressure irrigation versus apical positive pressure irrigation plus triantibiotic intracanal dressing) in immature dogs` teeth with apical periodontitis. Study design. Two test groups of canals with experimentally induced apical periodontitis were evaluated according to the disinfection technique: Group 1, apical negative pressure irrigation (EndoVac system), and Group 2, apical positive pressure irrigation (conventional irrigation) plus triantibiotic intracanal dressing. In Group 3 (positive control), periapical lesions were induced, but no endodontic treatment was done. Group 4 (negative control) was composed of sound teeth. The animals were killed after 90 days and the maxillas and mandibles were subjected to histological processing. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Mallory Trichrome and examined under light microscopy. A description of the apical and periapical features was done and scores were attributed to the following histopathological parameters: newly formed mineralized apical tissue, periapical inflammatory infiltrate, apical periodontal ligament thickness, dentin resorption, and bone tissue resorption. Intergroup comparisons were done by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn`s tests (alpha = 0.05). Results. Although statistically significant difference was found only for the inflammatory infiltrate (P < .05), Group 1 presented more exuberant mineralized formations, more structured apical and periapical connective tissue, and a more advanced repair process than Group 2. Conclusion. From the histological observations, sodium hypochlorite irrigation with the EndoVac system can be considered as a promising disinfection protocol in immature teeth with apical periodontitis, suggesting that the use of intracanal antibiotics might not be necessary. The cost of a road construction over its service life is a function of design, quality of construction as well as maintenance strategies and operations. An optimal life-cycle cost for a road requires evaluations of the above mentioned components. Unfortunately, road designers often neglect a very important aspect, namely, the possibility to perform future maintenance activities. Focus is mainly directed towards other aspects such as investment costs, traffic safety, aesthetic appearance, regional development and environmental effects. This doctoral thesis presents the results of a research project aimed to increase consideration of road maintenance aspects in the planning and design process. The following subgoals were established: Identify the obstacles that prevent adequate consideration of future maintenance during the road planning and design process; and Examine optimisation of life-cycle costs as an approach towards increased efficiency during the road planning and design process. The research project started with a literature review aimed at evaluating the extent to which maintenance aspects are considered during road planning and design as an improvement potential for maintenance efficiency. Efforts made by road authorities to increase efficiency, especially maintenance efficiency, were evaluated. The results indicated that all the evaluated efforts had one thing in common, namely ignorance of the interrelationship between geometrical road design and maintenance as an effective tool to increase maintenance efficiency. Focus has mainly been on improving operating practises and maintenance procedures. This fact might also explain why some efforts to increase maintenance efficiency have been less successful. An investigation was conducted to identify the problems and difficulties, which obstruct due consideration of maintainability during the road planning and design process. A method called “Change Analysis” was used to analyse data collected during interviews with experts in road design and maintenance. The study indicated a complex combination of problems which result in inadequate consideration of maintenance aspects when planning and designing roads. The identified problems were classified into six categories: insufficient consulting, insufficient knowledge, regulations and specifications without consideration of maintenance aspects, insufficient planning and design activities, inadequate organisation and demands from other authorities. Several urgent needs for changes to eliminate these problems were identified. One of the problems identified in the above mentioned study as an obstacle for due consideration of maintenance aspects during road design was the absence of a model for calculating life-cycle costs for roads. Because of this lack of knowledge, the research project focused on implementing a new approach for calculating and analysing life-cycle costs for roads with emphasis on the relationship between road design and road maintainability. Road barriers were chosen as an example. The ambition is to develop this approach to cover other road components at a later stage. A study was conducted to quantify repair rates for barriers and associated repair costs as one of the major maintenance costs for road barriers. A method called “Case Study Research Method” was used to analyse the effect of several factors on barrier repairs costs, such as barrier type, road type, posted speed and seasonal effect. The analyses were based on documented data associated with 1625 repairs conducted in four different geographical regions in Sweden during 2006. A model for calculation of average repair costs per vehicle kilometres was created. Significant differences in the barrier repair costs were found between the studied barrier types. In another study, the injuries associated with road barrier collisions and the corresponding influencing factors were analysed. The analyses in this study were based on documented data from actual barrier collisions between 2005 and 2008 in Sweden. The result was used to calculate the cost for injuries associated with barrier collisions as a part of the socio-economic cost for road barriers. The results showed significant differences in the number of injuries associated with collisions with different barrier types. To calculate and analyse life-cycle costs for road barriers a new approach was developed based on a method called “Activity-based Life-cycle Costing”. By modelling uncertainties, the presented approach gives a possibility to identify and analyse factors crucial for optimising life-cycle costs. The study showed a great potential to increase road maintenance efficiency through road design. It also showed that road components with low investment costs might not be the best choice when including maintenance and socio-economic aspects. The difficulties and problems faced during the collection of data for calculating life-cycle costs for road barriers indicated a great need for improving current data collecting and archiving procedures. The research focused on Swedish road planning and design. However, the conclusions can be applied to other Nordic countries, where weather conditions and road design practices are similar. The general methodological approaches used in this research project may be applied also to other studies.
