The aim of this research is to analyze the extension of changes in technological strategies of a group of Brazilian pharmaceutical companies, which we believe were induced by transformations in the institutional environment during the 1990s. Major institutional changes, such as the enacting of laws that recognized drug patents rights and fostered generic drugs market, have strengthened the market insertion and competitive position of these companies, what would enable an increase in research and development efforts in Brazil. In addition to the literature on technology strategy and drug industry, this study was based on interviews with six Brazilian pharmaceutical companies, all of which were ranked among the top national companies in the industry and have been considered in previous studies particularly active in the process of changing technological strategies. This research confirmed a significant intensification of technology efforts carried out by Brazilian drug companies. Nevertheless, the R&D intensity is still far below the global pattern and innovative impacts are slight.

Coffee husk is an abundant by-product generated by the coffee industry and it can be used for the production of-value-added phenolic compounds. Currently, this residue has no commercial use due to the presence of anti-nutritional compounds and it is returned to the soil or burned. The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds in Robusta coffee husk, the adequacy of this residue as substrate for fermentation processes, as well as evaluating the influence of fungal solid state fermentation to obtain phenolic compounds from this residue. In the present study, the use of different solvents for the extraction of polyphenols was evaluated and the content was found to be in the range of 96.9-159.5 mg of galic acid (GA).g(-1) substrate, depending on the solvent used. The best solvent was acetone, therefore it was selected for extraction. Studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of solid-state fermentation in the release of phenolic compounds, using the filamentous fungi Penicillium purpurogenum. The total phenolic content increased from 159.5 up to 243.2 mg GA.g(-1) substrate as a result the solid-state fermentation.

Stricter environmental policies are shown necessary to ensure an effective pollutant emission control. It is expected for the present year of 2015, that Brazil will assume, at the 21th United Nation's Climate Change Conference (COP21), implementation of commitment to a low carbon economy. This positioning affects the industrial environment, so that is deemed necessary to search for new technologies, less aggressive to the environment, so the adequacies to the new emission policies do not cause a negative effect on production. Almost all of the processes performed in the steel industry demand burning fuel and, therefore, flue gases are sent to the atmosphere. In this present work is discussed the utilization of heat exchangers so, by recovering part of the available heat from the flue gases of certain industrial process, the combustion air is preheated. The combustion air preheat results in less energy requirement, i.e., less need of fuel consumption and, in addition, minor amount of pollutants to be emitted. Due to better fitting to the process, it is studied the utilization of spiral plate heat exchangers. The heat exchanger dimensioning is made by an iterative method implemented in the software Microsoft Excel. Subsequently are analyzed the gains in terms of process's thermal efficiency improvement and the percentage of fuel saving. The latter implies in reduction of the same percentage of greenhouse gases emission

BACKGROUND A newly developed collagen matrix (CM) of porcine origin has been shown to represent a potential alternative to palatal connective tissue grafts (CTG) for the treatment of single Miller Class I and II gingival recessions when used in conjunction with a coronally advanced flap (CAF). However, at present it remains unknown to what extent CM may represent a valuable alternative to CTG in the treatment of Miller Class I and II multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGR). The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes following treatment of Miller Class I and II MAGR using the modified coronally advanced tunnel technique (MCAT) in conjunction with either CM or CTG. METHODS Twenty-two patients with a total of 156 Miller Class I and II gingival recessions were included in this study. Recessions were randomly treated according to a split-mouth design by means of MCAT + CM (test) or MCAT + CTG (control). The following measurements were recorded at baseline (i.e. prior to surgery) and at 12 months: Gingival Recession Depth (GRD), Probing Pocket Depth (PD), Clinical Attachment Level (CAL), Keratinized Tissue Width (KTW), Gingival Recession Width (GRW) and Gingival Thickness (GT). GT was measured 3-mm apical to the gingival margin. Patient acceptance was recorded using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The primary outcome variable was Complete Root Coverage (CRC), secondary outcomes were Mean Root Coverage (MRC), change in KTW, GT, patient acceptance and duration of surgery. RESULTS Healing was uneventful in both groups. No adverse reactions at any of the sites were observed. At 12 months, both treatments resulted in statistically significant improvements of CRC, MRC, KTW and GT compared with baseline (p < 0.05). CRC was found at 42% of test sites and at 85% of control sites respectively (p < 0.05). MRC measured 71 ± 21% mm at test sites versus 90 ± 18% mm at control sites (p < 0.05). Mean KTW measured 2.4 ± 0.7 mm at test sites versus 2.7 ± 0.8 mm at control sites (p > 0.05). At test sites, GT values changed from 0.8 ± 0.2 to 1.0 ± 0.3 mm, and at control sites from 0.8 ± 0.3 to 1.3 ± 0.4 mm (p < 0.05). Duration of surgery and patient morbidity was statistically significantly lower in the test compared with the control group respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present findings indicate that the use of CM may represent an alternative to CTG by reducing surgical time and patient morbidity, but yielded lower CRC than CTG in the treatment of Miller Class I and II MAGR when used in conjunction with MCAT.

Histone acetyltransferases are important chromatin modifiers that function as transcriptional co-activators. The identification of the transcriptional regulator GCN5 as the first nuclear histone acetyltransferase in yeast directly linked chromatin remodeling to transcriptional regulation. Although emerging evidence suggests that acetyltransferases participate in multiple cellular processes, their roles in mammalian development remain undefined. In this study, I have cloned and characterized the mouse homolog of GCN5 and a closely related protein P/CAF that interacts with p300/CBP. In contrast to yeast GCN5, but similar to P/CAF, mouse GCN5 possesses an additional N-terminal domain that confers the ability to acetylate nucleosomal histones. GCN5 and P/CAF exhibit identical substrate specificity and both interact with p300/CBP. Interestingly, expression levels of GCN5 and P/CAF display a complementary pattern in mouse embryos and in adult tissues, suggesting that they have distinct tissue or developmental stage specific roles. To define the in vivo function of GCN5 and P/CAF, I have generated mice that are nullizygous for GCN5 or P/CAF. P/CAF null mice are viable and fertile with no gross morphological defects, indicating that P/CAF is dispensable for development and p300/CBP function in vivo. In contrast, mice lacking GCN5 die between 10.511 days of gestation. GCN5 null mice are severely retarded but have anterior ectopic outgrowth. Molecular marker analyses reveal that early mesoderm is formed in GCN5 null mice but further differentiation into distinct mesodermal lineages is perturbed. While presomitic mesoderm and chodamesoderm are missing in GCN5 mutant mice, extraembryonic tissues and lateral mesoderm are unaffected. This is consistent with our finding that GCN5 expression is absent in the heart and extraembryonic tissues but is uniform throughout the rest of the embryo. Remarkably, GCN5 mutant mice exhibit an unusually high incidence of apoptosis in the embryonic ectoderm and mesoderm. Finally, mice doubly null for GCN5 and P/CAF die much earlier than mice harboring the GCN5 mutation alone, suggesting that P/CAF and GCN5 share some overlapping function during embryogenesis. This work is the first study to show that specific acetyltransferase is important for cell survival as well as mesoderm differentiation or maintenance during early mammalian development. ^

Tesis Doctoral Yans Guardia Puebla Abstract ix ABSTRACT Due to the increase of quality standards internationally demanded, as well as for a greater pressure on the industry by means of more rigorous environmental legislations, the coffee sector is forced to search, through the research, an appropriated treatment system for coffee wet wastewaters generated. In this work the performance of the anaerobic digestion for the coffee wet wastewater treatment was evaluated. For it, two anaerobic systems, one in single-stage (UASB), and another with two-phase (2PUASB) were used. The effect in the anaerobic digestion of three organic loading rates (OLR) and of two reactor configurations used was investigated. OLR operation values in UASB system varied in an interval of 3.6-4.1 kgCOD m-3 d-1, with a recycle rate of the effluent of 1.0. 2PUASB system was fed with OLR similar to those that were used in the reactor in a stage. The acidification reactor was loaded to 11.0 kgCOD m-3 d-1, whereas in the methanogenic reactor varied in the interval of 2.6-4.67 kgCOD m-3 d-1. The use of single-stage and two-phase UASB reactors, under the same operation conditions already before described, a total COD removal efficiency of 75% and 85% for the soluble COD removal efficiency, respectively, was achieved. However, two-phase system showed better results in the treatment of this wastewater type, not only as for removal efficiency of loading organic polluting as well as a smaller volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in the effluent. Obtained the best work conditions, the two-phase system under the effect of the recycle was evaluated. Fermentations groups produced were similar to those obtained in the experiment without recycle, indicating that it last one do not affect the relative composition of VFA of the anaerobic reactor, for that reason the degradation pattern of the residue does not change. A recycle rate of 1.0 of the effluent of the methanogenic reactor to the acidogenic reactor improved the process significantly, since it was increased the VFA conversion (31%), the removal of total and soluble fraction of the residue treated (6.5%) and the decrease of the alkalinity consumption (39%); maintaining similar methane productions. The use of the two-phase anaerobic digestion demonstrated to an improvement in the stability of the process and an increase of the operation efficiency and methane production, respectively.
