This paper is concerned with the effects of adding tin and/or titanium dopant to sodium aluminium hydride for both dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation reactions during their reversible storage of molecular hydrogen. Temperature programmed decomposition (TPD) measurements show that the dehydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 are significantly enhanced upon doping the material with 2 mol% of tributyltin hydride, Sn(Bu)(3)H but the tin catalyst dopant is shown to be inferior than titanium. On the other hand, in this preliminary work, a significant synergetic catalytic effect is clearly revealed in material co-doped with both titanium and tin catalysts which shows the highest reversible rates of dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation (after their hydrogen depletion). The re-hydrogenation rates of depleted Sn/Ti/NaAlH4 evaluated at both 9.5 and 140 bars hydrogen are also found to be favourable compared to the Ti/NaAlH4, which clearly suggest the importance of the catalyst choice. Basing on these results some mechanistic insights for the catalytic reversible dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation processes of Sn/Ti/NaAlH4 are therefore made. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The overall and the individual rate constants of the unimolecular thermal isomerization of methylenespiropentane (4) to 1,2- and 1,3-dimethylenecyclobutanes (7 and 8) have been determined to be lg (k(-4)/s(-1)) = (13.78 +/- 0.06) - (49.7 +/- 0.2) kcal mol(-1)/RT.ln 10, lg(k(7)/s(-1)) = (13.03 +/- 0.19) - (48.0 +/- 0.6) kcal mol(-1)/RT.ln 10 and lg(k(8)/s(-1)) = (14.15 +/- 0.19) - (52.4 +/- 0.5) kcal mol(-1)/RT.ln 10, respectively. The activation energies are significantly lower than that for the rearrangement of the parent spiropentane. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.

New construction algorithms for radial basis function (RBF) network modelling are introduced based on the A-optimality and D-optimality experimental design criteria respectively. We utilize new cost functions, based on experimental design criteria, for model selection that simultaneously optimizes model approximation, parameter variance (A-optimality) or model robustness (D-optimality). The proposed approaches are based on the forward orthogonal least-squares (OLS) algorithm, such that the new A-optimality- and D-optimality-based cost functions are constructed on the basis of an orthogonalization process that gains computational advantages and hence maintains the inherent computational efficiency associated with the conventional forward OLS approach. The proposed approach enhances the very popular forward OLS-algorithm-based RBF model construction method since the resultant RBF models are constructed in a manner that the system dynamics approximation capability, model adequacy and robustness are optimized simultaneously. The numerical examples provided show significant improvement based on the D-optimality design criterion, demonstrating that there is significant room for improvement in modelling via the popular RBF neural network.

The Fredholm properties of Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space A2 have been well-known for continuous symbols since the 1970s. We investigate the case p=1 with continuous symbols under a mild additional condition, namely that of the logarithmic vanishing mean oscillation in the Bergman metric.
