A convenient microwave method in preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using an ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide, [P-66614][NTf2], as a green solvent is described in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report for synthesizing any nanoparticle using this ionic liquid. Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide has low interface tension and thus it can enhance the nucleation rate, which is favorable to the formation of smaller ZnONPs. The fabricated ZnONPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The XRD pattern reveals that the ZnONPs have hexagonal wurtzite structure. The strong intensity and narrow width of ZnO diffraction peaks indicate that the resulting nanoparticles are of high crystallinity. The synthesized ZnONPs show direct band gap of 3.43 eV. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of ZnONPs dispersed in ethylene glycol at room temperature revealed a blue-shifted onset of absorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ethanol adsorption-desorption isotherms on well-organized mesoporous silica and titania films with hexagonal pores structure were studied by ellipsometric porosimetry. The mesopore volume Was calculated from the change of the effective refractive index at the end points of the isotherm. An improved Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (IDBdB) model for cylindrical pores is proposed for the determination of the pore size. In this model, the disjoining pressure isotherms were obtained by measuring the thickness of the ethanol film on a non-porous film with the same chemical composition. This approach eliminates uncertainties related to the application of the statistical film thickness determined via t-plots in previous versions of the DBdB model. The deviation in the surface tension of ethanol in the mesopores from that of a flat interface was described by the Tolman parameter in the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff equation. A positive value of the Tolman parameter of 0.2 nm was found from the fitting of the desorption branch of the isotherms to the experimental data obtained by Low Angle X-ray Diffraction (LA-XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements in the range of pore diameters between 2.1 and 8.3 nm. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from a hot pressed manganese doped ZnS target using a KrF laser, has produced a high rate deposition method for growing luminescent thin films. Good stoichiometric quality and typical luminescent crystal structures have been observed with a predominant hexagonal phase and little evidence of the cubic phase. The luminescent characteristics were determined by cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation and stable electroluminescence was observed under pulsed dc conditions with a minimum brightness of 150 cd/m2. PLD film characteristics are compared with those observed in radio-frequency sputtered samples.

A model system, HOOFS (Hierarchical Object Orientated Foraging Simulator), has been developed to study foraging by animals in a complex environment. The model is implemented using an individual-based object-orientated structure. Different species of animals inherit their general properties from a generic animal object which inherits from the basic dynamic object class. Each dynamic object is a separate program thread under the control of a central scheduler. The environment is described as a map of small hexagonal patches, each with their own level of resources and a patch-specific rate of resource replenishment. Each group of seven patches (0th order) is grouped into a Ist order super-patch with seven nth order super-patches making up a n + 1th order super-patch for n up to a specified value. At any time each animal is associated with a single patch. Patch choice is made by combining the information on the resources available within different order patches and super-patches along with information on the spatial location of other animals. The degree of sociality of an animal is defined in terms of optimal spacing from other animals and by the weighting of patch choice based on social factors relative to that based on food availability. Information, available to each animal, about patch resources diminishes with distance from that patch. The model has been used to demonstrate that social interactions can constrain patch choice and result in a short-term reduction of intake and a greater degree of variability in the level of resources in patches. We used the model to show that the effect of this variability on the animal's intake depends on the pattern of patch replenishment. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.</p>

This study presents the use of periodic arrays of freestanding slot frequency-selective screens (FSS) as a means for generating circularly polarised signals from an incident linearly polarised signal at normal incidence to the structure. Measured and simulated results for crossed, linear and various ring slot element shapes in single and double-layer polarisation convertor structures are presented for 10 GHz operation. It is shown that 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths of 21% can be achieved with the one-layer perforated screen design and that the rate of change is lower than the double-layer structures. An insertion loss of 0.34 dB can be achieved for the split circular ring double-layer periodic array, and of the three topologies presented the hexagonal split-ring polarisation convertor gives the lowest variation of AR with angle of incidence 1.8 dB/45° and 3.6 dB/45° for the single and double-screen FSS, respectively. In addition, their tolerance to angle of incidence variation is presented. The capability of the surfaces reported here as twist polariser or spatial isolator components has been demonstrated with up to -30 dB isolation between incident and re-reflected signals for the double-layer designs being measured. © 2010 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The structural, thermal, chemisorptive, and electronic properties of Ce on Pt{111} are studied by photoemission, Auger spectroscopy, scanning tunnel microscope (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Stranski-Krastanov-like growth of low-density Ce layers is accompanied by substantial valence charge transfer from Ce to Pt: in line with this, the measured dipole moment and polarizability of adsorbed Ce at low coverages are 7.2 x 10(-30) C m and similar to 1.3x10(-29) m(3), respectively. Pt-Ce intermixing commences at similar to 400 K and with increasing temperature a sequence of five different ordered surface alloys evolves. The symmetry, periodicities, and rotational epitaxy observed by LEED are in good accord with the STM data which reveal the true complexity of the system. The Various bimetallic surface phases are based on growth of crystalline Pt5Ce, a hexagonal layer structure consisting of alternating layers of Pt2Ce and Kagome nets of Pt atoms. This characteristic ABAB layered arrangement of the surface alloys is clearly imaged, and chemisorption data permit a distinction to be made between the more reactive Pt2Ce layer and the less reactive Pt Kagome net. Either type of layer can appear at the surface as the terminating structure, thicker films exhibiting unit mesh parameters characteristic of the bulk alloy.

Plasma-induced non-equilibrium liquid chemistry is used to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) without using any reducing or capping agents. The morphology and optical properties of the synthesized AuNPs are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Plasma processing parameters affect the particle shape and size and the rate of the AuNP synthesis process. Particles of different shapes (e. g. spherical, triangular, hexagonal, pentagonal, etc) are synthesized in aqueous solutions. In particular, the size of the AuNPs can be tuned from 5 nm to several hundred nanometres by varying the initial gold precursor (HAuCl4) concentration from 2.5 mu M to 1 mM. In order to reveal details of the basic plasma-liquid interactions that lead to AuNP synthesis, we have measured the solution pH, conductivity and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration of the liquid after plasma processing, and conclude that H2O2 plays the role of the reducing agent which converts Au+3 ions to Au-0 atoms, leading to nucleation growth of the AuNPs.

We investigate the magneto-optical properties of a nanostructured metamaterial comprised of arrays of nickel nanorods embedded in an anodized aluminum oxide template. The rods are grown using a self-assembly bottom-up technique that provides a uniform, quasi-hexagonal array over a large area, quickly and at low cost. The tuneability of the magneto-optic response of the material is investigated by varying the nanorod dimensions: diameter, length and inter-rod spacing as well as the overall thickness of the template. It is demonstrated that the system acts as a sub-wavelength light trap with enhanced magneto-optical properties occurring at reflectivity minima corresponding to photonic resonances of the metamaterial. Changes in dimensions of the nickel rods on the order of tens of nanometers cause a spectral blue-shift in the peak magneto-optical response of 270 nm in the visible range. A plasmonic enhancement is also observed at lower wavelengths, which becomes increasingly damped with larger diameters and increased volume fraction of nickel inclusions. This type of structure has potential applications in high density magneto-optical data storage (up to 1011–12 rods per square inch), ultrafast magneto-plasmonic switching and optical components for telecommunications.

Mechanochemical synthesis has the potential to provide more sustainable preparative routes to catalysts than the current multistep solvent-based routes. In this review, the mechanochemical synthesis of catalysts is discussed, with emphasis placed on catalysts for environmental, energy and chemical synthesis applications. This includes the formation of mixed-metal oxides as well as the process of dispersing metals onto solid supports. In most cases the process involves no solvent. Encouragingly, there are several examples where the process is advantageous compared with the more normal solvent-based methods. This can be because of process cost or simplicity, or, notably, where it provides more active/selective catalysts than those made by conventional wet chemical methods. The need for greater, and more systematic, exploration of this currently unconventional approach to catalyst synthesis is highlighted.

Organoarsonate-functionalized polyoxovanadates form upon the reduction of vanadates(V) in aqueous systems, whereby the underlying condensation reactions are influenced by the nature of the employed acid. In the presence of Cl− ions that derive from hydrochloric acid, a tetradecanuclear cage [VIV14O16(OH)8(O3AsC6H4-4-NH2)10]4– is obtained. When nitric acid is used, a condensed, decanuclear complex [V10O18(O3AsC6H4-4-NH2)7(DMF)2]5– forms. The latter organizes into a hexagonal packing arrangement in the solid state.

Epitaxial thin films Of various bismuth-layered perovskites SrBi(2)Ta(2)O(9), Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12), BaBi(4)Ti(4)O(15), and Ba(2)Bi(4)Ti(5)O(18) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition onto epitaxial conducting LaNiO(3) or SrRuO(3) electrodes on single crystalline SrTiO(3) substrates with different crystallographic orientations or on top of epitaxial buffer layers on (100) silicon. The conductive perovskite electrodes and the epitaxial ferroelectric films are strongly influenced by the nature of the substrate, and bismuth-layered perovskite ferroelectric films with mixed (100), (110)- and (001)-orientations as well as with uniform (001)-, (116)- and (103)- orientations have been obtained. Structure and morphology investigations performed by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning probe microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy reveal the different epitaxial relationships between films and substrates. A clear correlation of the crystallographic orientation of the epitaxial films with their ferroelectric properties is illustrated by macroscopic and microscopic measurements of epitaxial bismuth-layered perovskite thin films of different crystallographic orientations.

Ab initio total energy calculations within the density functional theory framework have been used to study the adsorption of CH2 and H as well as the coadsorption of CH2 and H on Ni(111). H binds strongly at threefold hollow sites with calculated adsorption energies of 2.60 and 2.54 eV at the face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) hollow sites, respectively. Adsorption energies and H-Ni distances are found to agree well with both experimental and theoretical results. CH2 adsorbs strongly at all high symmetry sites with calculated adsorption energies of 3.26, 3.22, 3.14 and 2.36 eV at the fcc, hcp, bridge and top sites, respectively. Optimized structures are reported at all sites, and, in the most stable hollow sites there is considerable internal reorganization of the CH2 fragment. The CH2 molecule is tilted, the hydrogens are inequivalent and the C-H bonds are lengthened relative to the gas phase. In the CH2-H coadsorption systems the adsorbates have a tendency to move toward bridge sites. The bonding of all adsorbates to the surface is analyzed in detail. Dense ceramics with mixed protonic-electronic conductivity are of considerable interest for the separation and purification of hydrogen and as electrochemical reactors. In this work, the hydrogen permeability of a Sr0.97Ce0.9Yb0.1O3 - δ (SCYb) membrane with a porous Pt catalytic layer on the hydrogen feed-exposed side has been studied over the temperature range 500-804 °C employing Ar as the permeate sweep gas. A SiO2-B2O3-BaO-MgO-ZnO-based glass-ceramic sealant was successfully employed to seal the membrane to the dual-chamber reactor. After 14 h of exposure to 10% H2:90% N2 at 804 °C, the H2 flux reached a maximum of 33 nmol cm- 2 s- 1, over an order of magnitude higher than that obtained on membranes of similar thickness without surface modification. The permeation rate then decreased slowly and moderately on annealing at 804 °C over a further 130 h. Thereafter, the flux was both reproducible and stable on thermal cycling in the range 600-804 °C. The results indicate an important role of superficial activation processes in the flux rate and suggest that hydrogen fluxes can be further optimised in cerate-based perovskites. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. It has been found that the catalytic activity and selectivity of a metal film deposited on a solid electrolyte could be enhanced dramatically and in a reversible way by applying an electrical current or potential between the metal catalyst and the counter electrode (also deposited on the electrolyte). This phenomenon is know as NEMCA [S. Bebelis, C.G. Vayenas, Journal of Catalysis, 118 (1989) 125-146.] or electrochemical promotion (EP) [J. Prichard, Nature, 343 (1990) 592.] of catalysis. Yttria-doped barium zirconate, BaZr0.9Y0.1O3 - α (BZY), a known proton conductor, has been used in this study. It has been reported that proton conducting perovskites can, under the appropriate conditions, act also as oxide ion conductors. In mixed conducting systems the mechanism of conduction depends upon the gas atmosphere that to which the material is exposed. Therefore, the use of a mixed ionic (oxide ion and proton) conducting membrane as a support for a platinum catalyst may facilitate the tuning of the promotional behaviour of the catalyst by allowing the control of the conduction mechanism of the electrolyte. The conductivity of BZY under different atmospheres was measured and the presence of oxide ion conduction under the appropriate conditions was confirmed. Moreover, kinetic experiments on ethylene oxidation corroborated the findings from the conductivity measurements showing that the use of a mixed ionic conductor allows for the tuning of the reaction rate. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. We investigate the cell coverage optimization problem for the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink. By deploying tilt-adjustable antenna arrays at the base stations, cell coverage optimization can become a promising technique which is able to strike a compromise between covering cell-edge users and pilot contamination suppression. We formulate a detailed description of this optimization problem by maximizing the cell throughput, which is shown to be mainly determined by the user distribution within several key geometrical regions. Then, the formulated problem is applied to different example scenarios: for a network with hexagonal shaped cells and uniformly distributed users, we derive an analytical lower bound of the ergodic throughput in the objective cell, based on which, it is shown that the optimal choice for the cell coverage should ensure that the coverage of different cells does not overlap; for a more generic network with sectoral shaped cells and non-uniformly distributed users, we propose an analytical approximation of the ergodic throughput. After that, a practical coverage optimization algorithm is proposed, where the optimal solution can be easily obtained through a simple one-dimensional line searching within a confined searching region. Our numerical results show that the proposed coverage optimization method is able to greatly increase the system throughput in macrocells for the massive MIMO uplink transmission, compared with the traditional schemes where the cell coverage is fixed.
