Prevention of recurrent herpes labialis outbreaks through low-intensity laser therapy: a clinical protocol with 3-year follow-up

Insulin alone or with captopril: effects on signaling pathways (AKT and AMPK) and oxidative balance after ischemia-reperfusion in isolated hearts

Insulin and the inhibition of the reninangiotensin system have independent benefits for ischemiareperfusion injury, but their combination has not been tested. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of insulin+captopril on insulin/angiotensin signaling pathways and cardiac function in the isolated heart subjected to ischemiareperfusion. Isolated hearts were perfused (Langendorff technique) with KrebsHenseleit (KH) buffer for 25 min. Global ischemia was induced (20 min), followed by reperfusion (30 min) with KH (group KH), KH+angiotensin-I (group A), KH+angiotensin-I+captopril (group AC), KH+insulin (group I), KH+insulin+angiotensin-I (group IA), or KH+insulin+angiotensin-I+captopril (group IAC). Group A had a 24% reduction in developed pressure and an increase in end-diastolic pressure vs. baseline, effects that were reverted in groups AC, IA, and IAC. The phosphorylation of protein kinase B (AKT) was higher in groups I and IA vs. groups KH and A. The phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) was similar to 31% higher in groups I, IA, and IAC vs. groups KH, A, and AC. The tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBOOH)-induced chemiluminescence was lower (similar to 2.2 times) in all groups vs. group KH and was similar to 35% lower in group IA vs. group A. Superoxide dismutase content was lower in groups A, AC, and IAC vs. group KH. Catalase activity was similar to 28% lower in all groups (except group IA) vs. group KH. During reperfusion of the ischemic heart, insulin activates the AKT and AMPK pathways and inhibits the deleterious effects of angiotensin-I perfusion on SOD expression and cardiac function. The addition of captopril does not potentiate these effects.

Microtensile bond strength of composite resin to glass-infiltrated alumina composite conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser

Tribochemical silica-coating is the recommended conditioning method for improving glass-infiltrated alumina composite adhesion to resin cement. High-intensity lasers have been considered as an alternative for this purpose. This study evaluated the morphological effects of Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation on aluminous ceramic, and verified the microtensile bond strength of composite resin to ceramic following silica coating or laser irradiation. In-Ceram Alumina ceramic blocks were polished, submitted to airborne particle abrasion (110 mu m Al(2)O(3)), and conditioned with: (CG) tribochemical silica coating (110 mu m SiO(2)) + silanization (control group); (L1-L10) Er,Cr:YSGG laser (2.78 mu m, 20 Hz, 0.5 to 5.0 W) + silanization. Composite resin blocks were cemented to the ceramic blocks with resin cement. These sets were stored in 37A degrees C distilled water (24 h), embedded in acrylic resin, and sectioned to produce bar specimens that were submitted to microtensile testing. Bond strength values (MPa) were statistically analyzed (alpha a parts per thousand currency sign0.05), and failure modes were determined. Additional ceramic blocks were conditioned for qualitative analysis of the topography under SEM. There were no significant differences among silicatization and laser treatments (p > 0.05). Microtensile bond strength ranged from 19.2 to 27.9 MPa, and coefficients of variation ranged from 30 to 55%. Mixed failure of adhesive interface was predominant in all groups (75-96%). No chromatic alteration, cracks or melting were observed after laser irradiation with all parameters tested. Surface conditioning of glass-infiltrated alumina composite with Er,Cr:YSGG laser should be considered an innovative alternative for promoting adhesion of ceramics to resin cement, since it resulted in similar bond strength values compared to the tribochemical treatment.

Time course of hydrogen peroxide-thioredoxin balance and its influence on the intracellular signalling in myocardial infarction

We investigated the myocardial thioredoxin-1 and hydrogen peroxide concentrations and their association with some prosurvival and pro-apoptotic proteins, during the transition from myocardial infarction (MI) to heart failure in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into the following six groups: three sham-operated groups and three MI groups, each at at 2, 7 and 28 days postsurgery. Cardiac function was analysed by echocardiography; the concentration of H2O2 and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione were measured spectrophotometrically, while the myocardial immunocontent of thioredoxin-1, angiotensin II, angiotensin II type 1 and type 2 receptors, p-JNK/JNK, p-ERK/ERK, p-Akt/Akt, p-mTOR/mTOR and p-GSK3 beta/GSK3 beta was evaluated by Western blot. Our results show that thioredoxin-1 appears to make an important contribution to the reduced H2O2 concentration. It was associated with lower JNK expression in the early period post-MI (2 days). However, thioredoxin-1 decreased, while reninangiotensin system markers and levels of H2O2 increased, over 28 days post-MI, in parallel with some signalling proteins involved in maladaptative cardiac remodelling and ventricular dysfunction. These findings provide insight into the time course profile of endogenous antioxidant adaptation to ischaemic injury, which may be useful for the design of therapeutical strategies targeting oxidative stress post-MI.

Desarrollo y adaptación de un videojuego clásico a las nuevas tecnologías móviles

[ES] Adaptación de un videojuego arcade a dispositivos móviles con el objetivo de introducirme en el desarrollo de videojuegos. El desarrollo de esta adaptación está formado por tres fases principales: 1) Análisis de videojuegos candidatos 2) Prototipado de los videojuegos seleccionados y generación de mecánicas y 3) Implementación del videojuego seleccionado. Las tres fases tuvieron una importancia considerable, puesto que una mala decisión en alguna de las actividades que contiene habría supuesto un resultado considerablemente menos satisfactorio. El objetivo del análisis fue obtener juegos con mecánicas de juego viables para ser adaptadas a terminales móviles y pudieran hacer uso de pantallas táctiles de forma coherente y sencilla. Juegos con mecánicas excesivamente complicadas eran descartados durante este proceso. Una vez listados los videojuegos arcade candidatos se realizó una extensa fase de prototipado en la que se desarrollaron diferentes versiones jugables. En cada una de estas versiones se implementaron diferentes características, tanto funcionales como no funcionales. En este punto se experimentaron diferentes mecánicas que utilizaran toda la potencia de las pantallas táctiles de los dispositivos móviles actuales. Por último, durante la fase de implementación final realicé un desarrollo formal de una aplicación resultante de feedback obtenido en la etapa de prototipado. Concretamente, la implementación realizada es una adaptación del clásico Pacman. En esta etapa se generaron todos los componentes que requiere el videojuego, así como diferentes pruebas llevadas a cabo con usuarios.

Contribución al estudio de la conquista de Gran Canaria. Documentos del Archivo Municipal de Carmona y del General de Simancas

[ES] En este trabajo se editan y analizan varios documentos que pretenden ayudar a conocer mejor las tropas que participaron en la conquista de la isla de Gran Canaria, destacando con ellos algunos de los sistemas de reclutamiento y pago de sueldos empleados para formar el ejército que intervino en la incorporación de la isla a la Corona de Castilla. [EN] Through the edition and analysis of diverse records, this work intends to achieve a deeper knowledge about the condition of those troops participating in the conquest of Gran Canaria. Among the issues under scrutiny, special attention will be devoted to conscription systems and the payment of wages as these may have determined how this army was organised and could therefore partake in the process of integration of the island into the Crown of Castile.

Recursos didácticos y estrategias TIC en el ámbito de la docencia del Derecho

[EN]In this paper we analyze the use of tablets in the classroom and the new key technologies based on mobile learning; describing their potential in the academic activities. We start always to identify and describe the key trends in educational technology in the field of teaching and learning and as always start from the last NMC Horizon Report 2014. So we will see how our university experience in the field of law, we used the methodological synergy and integration of the flipped classroom, apps design and even the gamification as new teaching tools of the digital ecosystem.

Formarse. De la adquisición de contenidos a la adquisición de competencias. Una experiencia piloto

[ES]El objetivo de este proyecto es integrar en la evaluación de resultados académicos obtenidos por el alumnado el nivel de desarrollo alcanzado en las competencias clave definidas en la asignatura, y orientar la actividad docente a la adquisición de dichas competencias. Este proyecto se ha diseñado en torno a un núcleo central, el desarrollo de las competencias generales y específicas descritas en la asignatura. Al inicio y al cierre de la asignatura, cada alumno se evalúa a sí mismo en las competencias generales y específicas de la asignatura; este recurso ofrece información relevante sobre la adquisición de las competencias clave, y complementa la evaluación que lleva a cabo el profesorado. Los resultados indican que los alumnos perciben una mejora competencial, y que las calificaciones finales están relacionadas con el desarrollo competencial. Se analizan los aspectos claves del éxito del proceso, así como los elementos de mejora a incorporar.

Rex prudens et sapiens. Semantica della regalità negli specula principum d'epoca tardomedievale (secoli XII-XV)

La ricerca di Roberta Frigeni, svolta ad ampio spettro diacronico, è condotta su di una campionatura di specula principum - editi ed inediti - elaborati tra XII e XV secolo, e ne indaga il linguaggio quale referente privilegiato, rilevandone persistenze terminologiche e nuclei sintagmatici ricorrenti, al fine di individuare concetti utili a delineare un lessico politico proprio di questa testualità, in corrispondenza al sorgere dell’entità statale europea nel XIII secolo (con particolare riguardo all’area francese, ai regni di Luigi IX e Filippo il Bello). A partire da un’analisi critica delle tesi di Quentin Skinner circa la ‘ridefinizione paradiastolica’ del sistema delle virtù classiche entro il trattato De principatibus, lo studio innesca un percorso di indagine à rebours che - sondando il linguaggio - rintraccia nella trattatistica delle institutiones regum del XV secolo (Pontano, Patrizi, Carafa, Platina) e degli specula principum medievali (Elinando di Froidmont, Gilberto di Tournai, Vincenzo di Beauvais, Guglielmo Peraldo, Egidio Romano, Guido Vernani) una consonanza di motivi nella sintassi e nell’immaginario preposti ad illustrare le potenzialità semantiche del nome di prudentia, individuata quale unica virtù sopravvissuta alla ‘ridescrizione’ del codice etico operata da Machiavelli. Indagando i progressivi ampliamenti del campo semantico sorto attorno al nome della virtù di prudenza entro la letteratura speculare, la ricerca mostra come il dialettico rapporto con i lessemi di sapientia, astutia, fides ed experientia abbia avuto un ruolo determinante per il sorgere di un’immagine del principe emancipata dalla figura biblica del “rex sapiens”, e per la formazione di un lessico ospitale delle manifestazioni concrete del vivere politico ed economico. I processi di dilatazione e rarefazione del bacino semantico di prudentia sono, infatti, funzionali ad illustrare come il linguaggio della testualità speculare registri l’acquisizione di nuove strumentazioni teoriche grazie al rinnovamento delle fonti a disposizione lungo il secolo XIII, che - sostituendo progressivamente il più recente dossier aristotelico al solo apparato veterotestamentario - permettono di integrare la concezione delle virtù in senso operativo, adattandola alle esigenze politico-economiche dei nuovi contesti istituzionali monarchici.
