By examining the pictorial content of the veintena section of the Primeros Memoriales, the manusctipt compiled by fray Bernardino de Sahagún, I identify new pieces of evidence on the origin of these illustrations and their authors. A carefull analisis of this material suggests that it is strongly embedded in the pre-Hispanic tradition and that it is doubtful that their iconographic sources originated in Tepeopolco, as it is widely believed.

The present study focuses on the frequency of phrasal verbs with the particle up in the context of crime and police investigative work. This research emerges from the need to enlarge McCarthy and O’Dell’s (2004) scope from purely criminal behavior to police investigative actions. To do so, we relied on a corpus of 504,124 running words made up of spoken dialogues extracted from the script of the American TV series Castle shown on ABC since 2009. Based on Rudzka-Ostyn’s (2003) cognitive motivations for the particle up, we have identified five different meaning extensions for our phrasal verbs. Drawing from these findings, we have designed pedagogical activities for those L2 learners that study English at the Police Academy.

The study of immune system aging, i.e. immunosenescence, is a relatively new research topic. It deals with understanding the processes of immuno-degradation that indicate signs of functionality loss possibly leading to death. Even though it is not possible to prevent immunosenescence, there is great benefit in comprehending its causes, which may help to reverse some of the damage done and thus improve life expectancy. One of the main factors influencing the process of immunosenescence is the number and phenotypical variety of naive T cells in an individual. This work presents a review of immunosenescence, proposes system dynamics modelling of the processes involving the maintenance of the naive T cell repertoire and presents some preliminary results.

A detailed investigation both of the DC and of the AC electrical properties of the Schottky barrier formed between aluminium and electrodeposited poly(3-methylthiophene) is reported. The devices show rectification ratios up to 2 x 10(4) which can be increased further after post-metal annealing. The reverse characteristics of the devices follow predictions based on the image-force lowering of the Schottky barrier, from which the doping density can be estimated, As the forward voltage increases, the device current is limited by the bulk resistance of the polymer with some evidence for injection limitation at the gold counter-electrode at high bias. In the bulk-limited regime, the device current is thermally activated near room temperature with an activation energy in the range 0.2-0.3 eV. Below about 150 K the device current is almost independent of temperature. Capacitance-voltage plots obtained at frequencies well below the device relaxation frequency indicate the presence of two distinct acceptor states, A set of shallow acceptor states are active in forward bias and are believed to determine the bulk conductivity of the polymer. A set of deeper accepters are active only for very small forward voltages and for all reverse voltages, namely when band banding causes the Fermi energy to cross these states. The density of these deeper states is approximately an order of magnitude greater than that of the shallow states. Evidence is presented also for the influence of fabrication conditions on the formation of an insulating interfacial layer at the rectifying interface. The presence of such a layer leads to inversion at the polymer surface and a modification of the I-V characteristics.

Tumours are characterized by a metabolic rewiring that helps transformed cells to survive in harsh conditions. The endogenous inhibitor of the ATP-synthase IF1 is overexpressed in several tumours and it has been proposed to drive metabolic adaptation. In ischemic normal-cells, IF1 acts limiting the ATP consumption by the reverse activity of the ATP-synthase, activated by ΔΨm collapse. Conversely, IF1 role in cancer cells is still unclear. It has been proposed that IF1 favours cancer survival by preventing energy dissipation in low oxygen availability, a frequent condition in solid tumours. Our previous data proved that in cancer cells hypoxia does not abolish ΔΨm, avoiding the ATP-synthase reversal and IF1 activation. In this study, we investigated the bioenergetics of cancer cells in conditions mimicking anoxia to evaluate the possible role of IF1. Data obtained indicate that also in cancer cells the ΔΨm collapse induces the ATP-synthase reversal and its inhibition by IF1. Moreover, we demonstrated that upon uncoupling conditions, IF1 favours cancer cells growth preserving ATP levels and energy charge. We also showed that in these conditions IF1 favours the mitochondrial mass renewal, a mechanism we proposed driving apoptosis-resistance. Cancer adaptability is also associated with the onset of therapy resistance, the major challenge for melanoma treatment. Recent studies demonstrated that miRNAs dysregulation drive melanoma progression and drug-resistance by regulating tumour-suppressor and oncogenes. In this context, we attempted to identify and characterize miRNAs driving resistance to vemurafenib in patient-derived metastatic melanoma cells BRAFV600E-mutated. Our results highlighted that several oncogenic pathways are altered in resistant cells, indicating the complexity of both drug-resistance phenomena and miRNAs action. Profiling analysis identified a group of dysregulated miRNAs conserved in vemurafenib-resistance cells from distinct patients, suggesting that they ubiquitously drive drug-resistance. Functional studies performed with a first miRNA confirmed its pivotal role in resistance towards vemurafenib.

My doctoral research is about the modelling of symbolism in the cultural heritage domain, and on connecting artworks based on their symbolism through knowledge extraction and representation techniques. In particular, I participated in the design of two ontologies: one models the relationships between a symbol, its symbolic meaning, and the cultural context in which the symbol symbolizes the symbolic meaning; the second models artistic interpretations of a cultural heritage object from an iconographic and iconological (thus also symbolic) perspective. I also converted several sources of unstructured data, a dictionary of symbols and an encyclopaedia of symbolism, and semi-structured data, DBpedia and WordNet, to create HyperReal, the first knowledge graph dedicated to conventional cultural symbolism. By making use of HyperReal's content, I showed how linked open data about cultural symbolism could be utilized to initiate a series of quantitative studies that analyse (i) similarities between cultural contexts based on their symbologies, (ii) broad symbolic associations, (iii) specific case studies of symbolism such as the relationship between symbols, their colours, and their symbolic meanings. Moreover, I developed a system that can infer symbolic, cultural context-dependent interpretations from artworks according to what they depict, envisioning potential use cases for museum curation. I have then re-engineered the iconographic and iconological statements of Wikidata, a widely used general-domain knowledge base, creating ICONdata: an iconographic and iconological knowledge graph. ICONdata was then enriched with automatic symbolic interpretations. Subsequently, I demonstrated the significance of enhancing artwork information through alignment with linked open data related to symbolism, resulting in the discovery of novel connections between artworks. Finally, I contributed to the creation of a software application. This application leverages established connections, allowing users to investigate the symbolic expression of a concept across different cultural contexts through the generation of a three-dimensional exhibition of artefacts symbolising the chosen concept.

Aim: To investigate the mechanism through which the extracellular alkalinization promotes relaxation in rat thoracic aorta. Methods: The relaxation response to NaOH-induced extracellular alkalinization (7.4-8.5) was measured in aortic rings pre-contracted with phenylephrine (Phe, 10(-6) M). The vascular reactivity experiments were performed in endothelium-intact and -denuded rings, in the presence or and absence of indomethacin (10(-5) M), NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10(-4) M), N-(6-Aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide/HCl (W-7, 10(-7) M), 2,5-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB, 2 x 10(-5) M) and methyl-B-cyclodextrin (10(-2) M). In addition, the effects of NaOH-induced extracellular alkalinization (pH 8.0 and 8.5) on the intracellular nitric oxide (NO) concentration was evaluated in isolated endothelial cells loaded with diaminofluorescein-FM diacetate (DAF-FM DA, 5 mu M), in the presence and absence of DMB (2 x 10(-5) M). Results: The extracellular alkalinization failed to induce any change in vascular tone in aortic rings pre-contracted with KCl. In rings pre-contracted with Phe, the extracellular alkalinization caused relaxation in the endothelium-intact rings only, and this relaxation was maintained after cyclooxygenase inhibition; completely abolished by the inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), Ca(2+)/calmodulin and Na(+)/Ca(2+). exchanger (NCX), and partially blunted by the caveolae disassembly. Conclusions: These results suggest that, in rat thoracic aorta, that extracellular alkalinization with NaOH activates the NCX reverse mode of endothelial cells in rat thoracic aorta, thereby the intracellular Ca(2+) concentration and activating the Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent NOS. In turn, NO is released promoting relaxation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Background/Aims: Specific treatment of chronic hepatitis C is effective in 50% of patients, improving the]liver`s fibrosis, necroinflammatory changes and steatosis. However, in patients still viremic after treatment the extension of these benefits remains doubtful. The evolution of the disease in this group and its relationship to demographic data, biometric indices and time lapse between biopsies was evaluated. Methodology: In 141 patients, paired biopsies were classified and compared according to fibrosis grading. Necroinflammation, steatosis, demographic data (age and gender), body mass index (BMI) and time lapse between biopsies were compared with fibrosis grading. Results: The grade of fibrosis of the patients, after approximately 3.5 years time lapse between biopsies, could be classified into 4 groups; Improved: 29(20.0%), Unaltered: 64(45.0%), Worsened: 48(34%) and Cirrhotic: 14(9.93%). For necroinflammation, the Improved/Unaltered groups were statistically similar but different from the Worsened and Cirrhotic. The mean age, BMI and time lapse between biopsies were statistically similar in all groups. Steatosis occurred in 35 (24.82%) between biopsies and its incidence was reduced in the Worsened and Cirrhotic groups. Conclusions: Fibrosis turned into cirrhosis in a significant number of patients, after a short time lapse. The reverse correlation of steatosis to fibrosis and its occurrence during the time lapse between biopsies suggests it might induce hepatic necrosis and contribute to fibrogenesis.

Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) make software easy to use by providing the user with visual controls. Therefore, correctness of GUI's code is essential to the correct execution of the overall software. Models can help in the evaluation of interactive applications by allowing designers to concentrate on its more important aspects. This paper presents a generic model for language-independent reverse engineering of graphical user interface based applications, and we explore the integration of model-based testing techniques in our approach, thus allowing us to perform fault detection. A prototype tool has been constructed, which is already capable of deriving and testing a user interface behavioral model of applications written in Java/Swing.

This article reports on a-Si:H-based low-leakage blue-enhanced photodiodes for dual-screen x-ray imaging detectors. Doped nanocrystalline silicon was incorporated in both the n- and p-type regions to reduce absorption losses for light incoming from the top and bottom screens. The photodiode exhibits a dark current density of 900 pA/cm(2) and an external quantum efficiency up to 90% at a reverse bias of 5 V. In the case of illumination through the tailored p-layer, the quantum efficiency of 60% at a 400 nm wavelength is almost double that for the conventional a-Si:H n-i-p photodiode.

telligence applications for the banking industry. Searches were performed in relevant journals resulting in 219 articles published between 2002 and 2013. To analyze such a large number of manuscripts, text mining techniques were used in pursuit for relevant terms on both business intelligence and banking domains. Moreover, the latent Dirichlet allocation modeling was used in or- der to group articles in several relevant topics. The analysis was conducted using a dictionary of terms belonging to both banking and business intelli- gence domains. Such procedure allowed for the identification of relationships between terms and topics grouping articles, enabling to emerge hypotheses regarding research directions. To confirm such hypotheses, relevant articles were collected and scrutinized, allowing to validate the text mining proce- dure. The results show that credit in banking is clearly the main application trend, particularly predicting risk and thus supporting credit approval or de- nial. There is also a relevant interest in bankruptcy and fraud prediction. Customer retention seems to be associated, although weakly, with targeting, justifying bank offers to reduce churn. In addition, a large number of ar- ticles focused more on business intelligence techniques and its applications, using the banking industry just for evaluation, thus, not clearly acclaiming for benefits in the banking business. By identifying these current research topics, this study also highlights opportunities for future research.
