The management of saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) in the Northern Territory is an important component of the State’s wildlife management policy. It encompasses saltwater crocodile control (the removal of problem crocodiles dangerous to humans and livestock), and the regulation of harvesting, farming and ranching of saltwater crocodiles for the production of commercial products. The distribution of saltwater crocodiles and their habitats often extend onto private and communal lands along the coastal belt of the Northern Territory, and therefore are a concern of landholders both Aboriginal and pastoral. This report presents the findings of a study of managers of Northern Territory cattle properties (pastoralists). Their attitudes are surveyed towards saltwater crocodiles on their properties and their views of the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission’s saltwater crocodile management plan are outlined. This report addresses social, economic and environmental aspects of the issue: pastoralists’ attitudes towards saltwater crocodiles in general, the impact saltwater crocodiles have on their cattle-raising business, their opinions of the Northern Territory Government’s saltwater crocodile plan and its operation, and their views of saltwater crocodile harvesting, its potential as an income earner and its contribution to the conservation of the saltwater crocodile. Opinions of pastoralists about new management schemes such as trophy hunting of saltwater crocodiles are also analysed. A concluding statement ties up the findings of the study and provides a snapshot of the current views of pastoral landholders of saltwater crocodiles and their management in the Northern Territory.

There is substantial economic potential for exploiting wildlife resources for non-consumptive wildlife-oriented recreation (NCWOR) tourism and this type of tourism if well managed, can result in the long-term conservation of wildlife resources. This is especially important in cases where wildlife resources are declining due to habitat destruction, poaching and other human threats, as is so for sea turtles. In this paper, relevant ecotourism literature outlining the economic values of NCWOR activities is reviewed to show that a significant potential exists for developing sea turtle-based tourism. Duffus and Dearden's (1990. Biological Conservation, 53, 213-231) conceptual framework for the development of wildlife tourism and its extension and application by Higham (1998. Tourism Management, 19 (6), 521-531) is analysed to see if it might be applied to sea turtle-based ecotourism in Australia at Mon Repos Conservation Park. Threats to sea turtle populations are growing especially as a result of human activities and these underline the importance of finding an economic rationale to conserve the remaining species. Economic benefits from turtle-based tourism can provide such a rationale. However, such tourism must be managed appropriately if it is to be sustained. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has adopted management strategies at Mon Repos Conservation Park with this in mind and these strategies are outlined. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. In 1995, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the Queensland Department of Main Roads and Redland Shire Council initiated the Koala Speed Zone Trial in the Koala Coast, south-east Queensland. The aim of the trial was to assess the effect of differential speed signs on the number of koalas ( Phascolarctos cinereus) hit by vehicles in the Koala Coast from 1995 to 1999. On the basis of information collected by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service 1407 koalas were hit by vehicles in the Koala Coast during the five-year study ( mean 281 koalas per year, range 251 - 315). Monitoring of vehicle speeds by the Queensland Department of Main Roads suggested that there was no significant reduction in vehicle speed during the trial period from August to December. Consequently, there was no evidence to suggest that a reduction in the number of koalas hit by vehicles occurred during the trial. Approximately 70% of koalas were hit on arterial and sub-arterial roads and approximately 83% did not survive. The location of each koala hit was recorded and the signed speed limit of the road was noted. Most koalas that were hit by vehicles were young healthy males. Pooling of data on koala collisions and road speed limits suggested that the proportion of koalas that survived being hit by vehicles was slightly higher on roads with lower speed limits. However, vehicle speed was not the only factor that affected the number of koalas hit by vehicles. It is suggested that habitat destruction, koala density and traffic volume also contribute to road-associated koala mortality in the Koala Coast.

Water wetting is a crucial issue in carbon dioxide (CO.) corrosion of multiphase flow pipelines made from mild steel. This study demonstrates the use of a novel benchtop apparatus, a horizontal rotating cylinder, to study the effect of water wetting on CO2 corrosion of mild steel in two-phase flow. The setup is similar to a standard rotating cylinder except for its horizontal orientation and the presence of two phases-typically water and oil. The apparatus has been tested by using mass-transfer measurements and CO2 corrosion measurements in single-phase water flow. CO2 corrosion measurements were subsequently performed using a water/hexane mixture with water cuts varying between 5% and 50%. While the metal surface was primarily hydrophilic under stagnant. conditions, a variety of dynamic water wetting situations was encountered as the water cut and fluid velocity were altered. Threshold velocities were identified at various water cuts when the surface became oil-wet and corrosion stopped.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos do óleo de mamona sobre a broca-grande do tomateiro, Helicoverpa zea, e sobre o parasitoide de ovos Trichogramma pretiosum. Foi determinada a mortalidade larval da broca, que foi submetida ao óleo de mamona por ingestão e contato às concentrações 0,5, 1,0, 1,5, 2,0, 2,5 e 3,0% (v v-1). A ação do óleo de mamona sobre T. pretiosum foi determinada mediante testes de seletividade e suscetibilidade. As maiores mortalidades de larvas foram observadas no tratamento por contato com as menores concentrações (0,5 e 1,0%), enquanto com as concentrações intermediárias (1,5; 2,0 e 2,5%), não houve diferença entre as vias de aplicação. À maior concentração testada (3,0%), o tratamento por ingestão proporcionou mortalidade superior àquela obtida por contato. O número de ovos parasitados por T. pretiosum, no teste de seletividade, foi afetado negativamente pelo óleo de mamona, contudo, os demais parâmetros avaliados quanto à seletividade e à suscetibilidade não foram afetados. O óleo de mamona reduz a sobrevivência de larvas de H. zea tanto por ingestão quanto por contato. Além disso, não prejudica o desenvolvimento de T. pretiosum, desde que as pulverizações sejam realizadas após as liberações do parasitoide.

O descarte ou reutilização da água produzida da indústria do petróleo é difícil por causa dos impactos ambientais causados devido à presença de alta salinidade e componentes tóxicos, ou pelo risco de obstrução nas colunas de produção devido à formação de incrustações que causam redução na produção de petróleo e enormes perdas no processo de extração. Assim, o conhecimento da composição química da água produzida é muito importante. O método proposto por este trabalho visa a determinação de elementos traço (Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se e V) em amostras de água produzida de petróleo por espectrometria de emissão óptica com plasma indutivamente acoplado (ICP OES) utilizando a digestão ácida assistida por micro-ondas para o preparo das amostras (15 g de amostra e 2 mL de HNO3 concentrado). A curva analítica construída em HNO3 2% v v-1 foi adotada para o método após verificar que não é necessário o uso de salinidade para equiparação de matriz. Para o elemento Ni, não há necessidade do uso de padrão interno, para os elementos Co, Cr, Fe, Mn e V os melhores resultados foram obtidos usando Sc como padrão interno. Para o elemento Se é recomendado o uso de Y como padrão interno. Os limites de detecção obtidos foram Co 0,67, Cr 1,2, Fe 2,3, Mn 0,49, Ni 1,9, Se 3,7 e V 5,5 μg L-1; e os limites de quantificação foram Co 2,2, Cr 4,0, Fe 7,7, Mn 1,6, Ni 6,5, Se 12,4 e V 18,3 μg L-1. A exatidão do procedimento foi verificada através de testes de recuperação em dois níveis de concentração (40 e 80 μg L-1) e análise dos materiais certificados de referência de água estuarina SLEW-2 e de água do mar NASS-5. Bons valores de recuperação foram obtidos e não houve diferença significativa (95% de confiança) entre os resultados obtidos e os valores certificados dos materiais de referência.

Modelos de escoamento multifásico são amplamente usados em diversas áreas de pesquisa ambiental, como leitos fluidizados, dispersão de gás em líquidos e vários outros processos que englobam mais de uma propriedade físico-química do meio. Dessa forma, um modelo multifásico foi desenvolvido e adaptado para o estudo do transporte de sedimentos de fundo devido à ação de ondas de gravidade. Neste trabalho, foi elaborado o acoplamento multifásico de um modelo euleriano não-linear de ondas do tipo Boussinesq, baseado na formulação numérica encontrada em Wei et al. (1995), com um modelo lagrangiano de partículas, fundamentado pelo princípio Newtoniano do movimento com o esquema de colisões do tipo esferas rígidas. O modelo de ondas foi testado quanto à sua fonte geradora, representada por uma função gaussiana, pá-pistão e pá-batedor, e quanto à sua interação com a profundidade, através da não-linearidade e de propriedades dispersivas. Nos testes realizados da fonte geradora, foi observado que a fonte gaussiana, conforme Wei et al. (1999), apresentou melhor consistência e estabilidade na geração das ondas, quando comparada à teoria linear para um kh . A não-linearidade do modelo de ondas de 2ª ordem para a dispersão apresentou resultados satisfatórios quando confrontados com o experimento de ondas sobre um obstáculo trapezoidal, onde a deformação da onda sobre a estrutura submersa está em concordância com os dados experimentais encontrados na literatura. A partir daí, o modelo granular também foi testado em dois experimentos. O primeiro simula uma quebra de barragem em um tanque contendo água e o segundo, a quebra de barragem é simulada com um obstáculo rígido adicionado ao centro do tanque. Nesses experimentos, o algoritmo de colisão foi eficaz no tratamento da interação entre partícula-partícula e partícula-parede, permitindo a evidência de processos físicos que são complicados de serem simulados por modelos de malhas regulares. Para o acoplamento do modelo de ondas e de sedimentos, o algoritmo foi testado com base de dados da literatura quanto à morfologia do leito. Os resultados foram confrontados com dados analíticos e de modelos numéricos, e se mostraram satisfatórios com relação aos pontos de erosão, de sedimentação e na alteração da forma da barra arenosa

The adoption of faster modes of transportation (mainly the private car) has changed profoundly the spatial organisation of cities. The increase in distance covered due to increased speed of travel and to urban sprawl leads to an increase in energy consumption, being the transportation sector a huge consumer responsible for 61.5% of total world oil consumption and a global final energy consumption of 31.6% in EU-27 (2007). Due to unsustainable transportation conditions, many cities suffer from congestion and various other traffic problems. Such situations get worse with solutions mostly seen in the development of new infrastructure for motorized modes of transportation, and construction of car parking structures. The bicycle, considered the most efficient among all modes of transportation including walking, is a travel mode that can be adopted in most cities contributing for urban sustainability given the associated environmental, economic and social advantages. In many nations a large number of policy initiatives have focused on discouraging the use of private cars, encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transportation, like public transportation and other forms such as bicycling. Given the importance of developing initiatives that favour the use of bicycle as an urban transportation mode, an analysis of city suitability, including distances and slopes of street network, is crucial in order to help decision-makers to plan the city for bicycle. In this research Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology was used for this purpose and some results are presented concerning the city of Coimbra.

In this study, the results of chemical concentrations inside and outside of a Lisbon (Portugal) traffic tunnel were compared, during one week. They were obtained by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). The tunnel values largely exceed the Air Ambient legislated values and the Pearson Correlations Coefficients point out to soil re-suspension/dispersed road dust (As, Ce, Eu, Hf, Fe, Mo, Sc, Zn), traffic-markers (Ba, Cr), tire wear (Cr, Zn), break wear (Fe, Zn, Ba, Cu, Sb), exhaust and motor oil (Zn) and sea-spray (Br, Na). On all days these elements inside the tunnel were more enriched than outside; significant statistical differences were found for Co (p=0.005), Br (p=0.008), Zn (p=0.01) and Sb (p=0.005), while enrichment factors of As and Sc are statistically identical. The highest values were found for As, Br, Zn and Sb, for both inside and outside the tunnel.

There are several hazards in histopathology laboratories and its staff must ensure that their professional activity is set to the highest standards while complying with the best safety procedures. Formalin is one of the chemical hazards to which such professionals are routinely exposed. To decrease this contact, it is suggested that 10% neutral buffered liquid formalin (FL) is replaced by 10% formalin-gel (FG), given the later reduces the likelihood of spills and splashes, and decreased fume levels are released during its handling, proving itself less harmful. However, it is mandatory to assess the effectiveness of FG as a fixative and ensure that the subsequent complementary techniques, such as immunohistochemistry (IHC), are not compromised. Two groups of 30 samples from human placenta have been fixed with FG and FL fixatives during different periods of time (12, 24, and 48 hours) and, thereafter, processed, embedded, and sectioned. IHC for six different antibodies was performed and the results were scored (0–100) using an algorithm that took into account immunostaining intensity, percentage of staining structures, non-specific immunostaining, contrast, and morphological preservation. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were used (alpha = 0•05). All results were similar for both fixatives, with global score means of 95•36±6•65 for FL and 96•06±5•80 for FG, and without any statistical difference (P>0•05). The duration of the fixation had no statistical relevance also (P>0•05). So it is proved here FG could be an effective alternative to FL.
