The growth of strongly oriented or epitaxial thin films of metal oxides generally requires relatively high growth temperatures or infusion of energy to the growth surface through means such as ion bombardment. We have grown high quality epitaxial thin films of Co3O4 on different substrates at a temperature as low as 400 degreesC by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) using cobalt(II) acetylacetonate as the precursor. With oxygen as the reactant gas, polycrystalline Co3O4 films are formed on glass and Si (100) in the temperature range 400-550 degreesC. Under similar conditions of growth. highly oriented films of Co3O4 are formed on SrTiO3 (100) and LaAlO3 (100). The activation energy for the growth of polycrystalline films on glass is significantly higher than that for epitaxial growth on SrTiO3 (100). The film on LaAlO3 (100) grown at 450 degreesC shows a rocking curve FWHM of 1.61 degrees, which reduces to 1.32 degrees when it is annealed in oxygen at 725 degreesC. The film on SrTiO3 (100) has a FWHM of 0.33 degrees (as deposited) and 0.29 (after annealing at 725 degreesC). The phi -scan analysis shows cube-on-cube epitaxy on both these substrates. The quality of epitaxy on SrTiO3 (100) is comparable to the best of the perovskite-based oxide thin films grown at significantly higher temperatures. A plausible mechanism is proposed for the observed low temperature epitaxy. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The development of high-quality tin monosulphide (SnS) layers is one of the crucial tasks in the fabrication of efficient SnS-based optoelectronic devices. Reduction of strain between film and the substrate by using an appropriate lattice-matched (LM) substrate is a new attempt for the growth of high-quality layers. In this view, the SnS films were deposited on LM Al substrate using the thermal evaporation technique with a low rate of evaporation. The as-grown SnS films were characterized using appropriate techniques and the obtained results are discussed by comparing them with the properties of SnS films grown on amorphous substrate under the same conditions. From structural analysis of the films, it is noticed that the SnS films deposited on amorphous substrate have crystallites that were oriented along different directions. However, the SnS crystallites grown on Al substrate exhibited epitaxial growth along the 101] direction. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman studies reveal that the films grown on Al substrate have better optical properties than those of the films grown on amorphous substrates. Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates via sol-gel technique using zinc acetate dihydrate as precursor by spin coating of the sol at 2000 rpm. Effects of annealing temperature on optical, structural and photo luminescence properties of the deposited ZnO films have been investigated. The phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure was observed at an annealing temperature of 400 degrees C. An average transmittance of 87% in the visible region has been obtained at room temperature. The optical transmittance has slightly increased with increase of annealing temperature. The band gap energy was estimated by Tauc's method and found to be 3.22 eV at room temperature. The optical band gap energy has decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity increased with annealing temperature up to 200 degrees C and decreased at 300 degrees C. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed study, involving the synthesis of a single-source precursor containing two metal ions sharing the same crystallographic site, has been undertaken to elucidate the use of such a single-source precursor in a CVD process for growing thin films of oxides comprising these two metals, ensuring a uniform composition and distribution of metal ions. The substituted complexes Cr1-xAlx(acac)(3), where acac = acetyl-acetonate, have been prepared by a co-synthesis method, and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy. TGA/DTA measurements, and single crystal X-ray diffraction at low temperature. All the studied compositions crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with Z = 4 in the unit cell. It was observed that the ratio (Al:Cr) of the site occupancy for the metal ions, obtained from single crystal refinement, is in agreement with the results obtained from complexometric titrations. All the solid state structures have the metal in an octahedral environment forming six-membered chelate rings. M-O acac bond lengths and disorder in the terminal carbon have been studied in detail for these substituted metal-organic complexes. One composition among these was chosen to evaluate their suitability as a single-source precursor in a LPMOCVD process (low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapour deposition) for the deposition of a substituted binary metal oxide thin film. The resulting thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The sharp increase in microwave power loss (the reverse of what has previously been reported) at the transition temperature in high-Tc superconducting systems such as YBaCu oxide (polycrystalline bulk and thin films obtained by the laser ablation technique) and BiPbSrCaCu oxide is reported. The differences between DC resistivity ( rho ) and the microwave power loss (related to microwave surface resistance) are analysed from the data obtained by a simultaneous measurement set-up. The influence of various parameters, such as preparation conditions, thickness and aging of the sample and the probing frequency (6-18 GHz), on the variation of microwave power loss with temperature is outlined.

The technique of nebulized spray pyrolysis has been explored to find out whether oriented films of certain important oxides can be produced on single-crystal substrates by this relatively gentle method. Starting with acetylacetonate precursors, oriented films of metallic LaNiO3 containing nearly spherical grains (30 nm) have been obtained. Films of near-stoichiometric La4Ni3O10 and La3Ni2O7 showing metallic conductivity have been obtained by this method. This is indeed gratifying since it is difficult to prepare monophasic and stoichiometric bulk samples of these materials. Films of La2NiO4 show the expected semiconducting behavior. In the La-Cu-O system, starting with acetylacetonates, we have obtained films mainly comprising semiconducting La2Cu2O5, which is generally difficult to prepare in bulk form. More interestingly, nebulized spray pyrolysis gives excellent stoichiometric films of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 consisting of nearly spherical grains (30 nm) which show ferroelectric behavior. The present investigation demonstrates that nebulized spray pyrolysis provides a useful and desirable route to deposite oriented films of complex oxide materials on single-crystal substrates.

Epitaxial LaNiO3 metallic oxide thin films have been grown on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films on LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique and the interface formed between the two films has been examined by measuring the contact conductance of the same. The specific contact conductance of the interface measured using a modified four probe method was found to be 1.4 to 6 x 10(4) ohm(-1) cm(-2) at 77 K, There are indications that contact conductance can be brought closer to that obtained for noble metal-YBCO interface.

A distinctive characteristic of silver in oxygen incorporation of oxide thin films during pulsed laser ablation has been discovered. Optical emission spectroscopy studies of laser-induced plume of Ag-target indicates the presence of AgO species whose concentration increases with an increase in oxygen partial pressure. The formation of AgO in laser-plume has been found to be very useful for the realization of high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) and giant magnetoresistive La0.7MnO3-delta (LMO) thin films with dramatically superior quality if the target materials contained a small amount of silver. The improvement in the quality of these films is brought about by the supply of atomic oxygen to oxide lattices during their formation. This becomes possible due to the fact that Ag, after it is ablated with other constituent materials in the target, gets moderately oxidized in an oxygen atmosphere and the oxidized species dissociate back into Ag and nascent O at the substrate surface. The nascent oxygen is very highly reactive and is easily assimilated into the lattice of these compounds. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. The constitutive behavior of passivated copper films is studied. Stresses in copper films of thickness ranging from 1000 nm to 40 nm, passivated with silicon oxide on a quartz or silicon substrate, were measured using the curvature method. The thermal cycling spans a temperature range from - 196 to 600°C. It is seen that the strong relaxation at high temperatures normally found in unpassivated films is nonexistent for passivated films. The copper film did not show any rate-dependent effect over a range of heating/cooling rate from 5 to 25°C/min. Further analyses showed that significant strain hardening exists during the course of thermal loading. In particular, the measured stress- temperature response can only be fitted with a kinematic hardening model, if a simple constitutive law within the continuum plasticity framework is to be used. The analytic procedures for extracting the film properties are presented. Implications to stress modeling of copper interconnects in actual devices are discussed.

We report crack formation in alumina films grown on Si(100), caused by annealing in a controlled oxidizing ambient. The films were grown in a low-pressure CVD reactor, using aluminium acetylacetonate as precursor. High purity argon and nitrous oxide were employed as carrier and oxidizing gas, respectively. The films were characterized by optical microscopy and SEM/EDAX. The proportion and chemical nature of the heteroatoms, namely C and H, incorporated into the films from the precursor, were characterized by XPS, and FTIR. As-deposited films do not exhibit any cracks, while post-deposition annealing results in cracks. Apart from the delamination of the films, annealing in nitrous oxide ambient leads to an unusual crack geometry, which we term the “railway-track”. These twin cracks are very straight and run parallel to each other for as much as several millimeters. Often, two such linear tracks meet at exactly 90°. Between some of these tracks lie bullet-like structures with very sharp tips, oriented in a specific direction. As cracks are generally activated by residual stress, both thermal and intrinsic, the origins of the stresses that generate these linear cracks are discussed. The redistribution of stress, arising from the removal of C and H during annealing, will also be discussed. An attempt has been made to correlate the formation of cracks with the crystal structure of the film.

Homogeneous composite thin films of Fe2O3-carbon nanotube were synthesized in a novel, single-step process by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using ferric acetyl acetonate as precursor. The deposition of composite takes place in a narrow range of CVD conditions, beyond which the deposition either multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) only or hematite (α-Fe2O3) only takes place. The composite film formed on stainless steel substrates were tested for their supercapacitive properties in various aqueous electrolytes.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been prepared on silicon substrates by sol-gel spin coating technique with spinning speed of 3,000 rpm. The films were annealed at different temperatures from 200 to 500 A degrees C and found that ZnO films exhibit different nanostructures at different annealing temperatures. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ZnO films convert from amorphous to polycrystalline phase after annealing at 400 A degrees C. The metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated using ZnO films deposited on pre-cleaned silicon (100) substrates and electrical properties such as current versus voltage (I-V) and capacitance versus voltage (C-V) characteristics were studied. The electrical resistivity decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The oxide capacitance was measured at different annealing temperatures and different signal frequencies. The dielectric constant and the loss factor (tan delta) were increased with increase of annealing temperature.

Yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) thin films were deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process using indigenously developed metal organic precursors Yttrium 2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionates, commonly known as Y(tod)(3) which were synthesized by an ultrasound method. A series of thin films were deposited by varying the oxygen flow rate from 1-9 sccm, keeping all other parameters constant. The deposited coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Thickness and roughness for the films were measured by stylus profilometry. Optical properties of the coatings were studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hardness and elastic modulus of the films were measured by nanoindentation technique. Being that microwave ECR CVD process is operating-pressure-sensitive, optimum oxygen activity is very essential for a fixed flow rate of precursor, in order to get a single phase cubic yttrium oxide in the films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that describes the use of Y(tod)(3) precursor for deposition of Y(2)O(3) films using plasma assisted CVD process.
