In this contribution superconducting specimens of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) were synthesized by a modified polymeric precursor method, yielding a ceramic powder with particles of mesoscopic-size. Samples of this powder were then pressed into pellets and sintered under different conditions. The critical current density was analyzed by isothermal AC-susceptibility measurements as a function of the excitation field, as well as with isothermal DC-magnetization runs at different values of the applied field. Relevant features of the magnetic response could be associated to the microstructure of the specimens and, in particular, to the superconducting intra- and intergranular critical current properties.

The paper presents the results of instrumented compression load tests carried out in three uncased cast-in-place piles (pounded piles, called apiloadas in Brazil) which is largely used in interior part of the state of São Paulo. The tests were conducted with the soil in the natural condition and after soaking with water, before loading, in order to evaluate the influence of the soil collapsibility in the results. The values of the ultimate loads (total, point and lateral loads) obtained in the tests are presented and compared with the values predicted by empirical methods that utilize SPT and CPT results.

Introduction: The number of ambulatory surgeries accomplished in hospitals, as in private clinics, grows each day, with this increase having been observed principally in the last two decades. In many countries, such as France, ambulatory surgeries have predominated in relation to those in hospitals. Objective: To evaluate retrospectively 1 031 cases of patients operated on in the Ambulatory Surgery Service of CH. in the School of Medicine at Botucatu. Material and method: Retrospectively, 1 031 clinical cases of orificial pathologies operated on in the service were studied, analyzing the distribution by age group, sex, pathologies and postoperative complications. Result: We note predominance of patients aged less than 45 years (56.6%), discrete prevalence of males (51.2%), with hemorrhoidal disease (60%) being the principal affliction, with pain and bleeding being the most frequent complications (3.2%). Conclusions: The results obtained demonstrate that ambulatory procedures in proctology can be accomplished in a safe and systematic manner at low cost with advantages and fewer complications in relation to procedures completed in a hospitalization regime.

This study assessed the behavior and the productive performance of lambs finished in feedlot receiving diets added with green propolis, brown propolis or monensin sodium. The experiment used a randomized block design that compared weight gain of 32 male lambs aged four months among four dietary treatments: (1) control, non-enriched diet; (2) with green propolis; (3) with brown propolis; and (4) with monensin sodium. The basic diet provided to all the groups was a total mixed ration (TMR) with a forage:concentrate ratio of 50:50, in which Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) grass was used as roughage feed and the concentrate was based on soybean meal, corn meal and minerals. The green propolis diet decreased rumination and increased resting time. The diets provided similar feeding rate (g/min). DM and aNDF intake (g/kg of body weight and g/kg of metabolic weight) were higher in the control treatment. Although the control group had the highest weight gain, the highest feed conversion and feed efficiency were found in lambs fed brown propolis and monensin sodium. Technically, brown propolis can substitute monensin sodium as a dietary additive for feedlot lambs. However, complementary studies are needed to identify the best levels of brown propolis to add to these diets. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Noradrenaline and mixed alpha(2)-adrenoceptor/imidazoline-receptor ligands: effects on sodium intake
Resumo:
The effect of noradrenaline, and mixed ligands to alpha(2)-adrenoceptors (alpha(2)-AR) and imidazoline receptors (IR), injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.), on sodium intake of sodium depleted rats, was tested against idazoxan, a mixed antagonist ligand to alpha(2)-AR and IR. The inhibition of sodium intake induced by noradrenaline (80 nmol) was completely reversed by idazoxan (160 and 320 nmol) injected i.c.v. The inhibition of sodium intake induced by mixed ligands to alpha(2)-AR and IR, UK14,304, guanabenz and moxonidine, was antagonized from 50 to 60% by idazoxan i.c.v. The results demonstrate that noradrenaline, a non-ligand for IR, acts on alpha(2)-AR inhibiting sodium intake. The possibility that either alpha(2)-AR or IR mediate the effect of mixed agonists on sodium intake remains an open question. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Salivation induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of pilocarpine (cholinergic agonist) is reduced by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injections of moxonidine (alpha(2) adrenergic and imidazoline receptor agonist). In the present study, we investigated the involvement of central alpha(2) adrenergic receptors in the inhibitory effect of i.c.v. moxonidine on i.p. pilocarpine-induced salivation. Male Holtzman rats with stainless steel cannula implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) were used. Saliva was collected using pre-weighted small cotton balls inserted into the animal's mouth under ketamine (100 mg kg(-1)) anesthesia. Salivation was induced by i.p. injection of pilocarpine (4 mu mol kg(-1)). Pilocarpine-induced salivation was reduced by i.c.v. injection of moxonidine (10 nmol) and enhanced by i.c.v. injections of either RX 821002 (160 nmol) or yohimbine (320 nmol). The inhibitory effect of i.c.v. moxonidine on pilocarpine-induced salivation was abolished by prior i.c.v. injections of the alpha(2) adrenergic receptor antagonists, RX 821002 (160 nmol) or yohimbine (160 and 320 nmol). The alpha(1) adrenergic receptor antagonist prazosin (320 nmol) injected i.c.v. did not change the effect of moxonidine on pilocarpine-induced salivation. The results suggest that moxonidine acts on central alpha(2) adrenergic receptors to inhibit pilocarpine-induced salivation, and that this salivation is tonically inhibited by central alpha(2) adrenergic receptors. It has been shown that central or peripheral injections of the peptide relaxin induces water intake, not sodium intake in rats. Important inhibitory mechanisms involving serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the control of water and NaCl intake have been demonstrated in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). In the present Study, we investigated the effects of bilateral injections of methysergide (serotonergic receptor antagonist) into the LPBN on intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) relaxin-induced water and NaCl intake in rats. Additionally, the effect of the blockade of central angiotensin AT(1) receptors with i.c.v. losartan on relaxin-induced water and NaCl intake in rats treated with methysergide into the LPBN was also investigated. Male Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) and bilaterally in the LPBN were used. Intracerebroventricular injections of relaxin (500 ng/l mul) induced water intake (5.1+/-0.7 ml/120 min), but not significant 1.8% NaCl intake (0.5+/-0.4 ml/120 min). Bilateral injections of methysergide (4 mug/0.2 mul) into the LPBN strongly stimulated relaxin-induced 1.8% NaCl intake (34.5+/-10.9 ml/120 min) and slightly increased water intake (10.5+/-4.9 ml/120 min). The pretreatment with i.c.v. losartan (100 mug/l mul) abolished the effects of i.c.v. relaxin combined with LPBN methysergide on 1.8% NaCI intake (0.5+/-0.4 ml/120 min). Losartan (100 mug/l mul) also abolished relaxin-induced water intake in rats injected with methysergide into the LPBN (1.6+/-0.8 ml/120 min) or not (0.5+/-0.3 ml/120 min). Losartan (50 mug/l mul) partially reduced the effects of relaxin. The results show that central relaxin interacting with central angiotensinergic mechanisms induces NaCl intake after the blockade of LPBN serotonergic mechanisms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Cholinergic, agonists activate salivation and the alpha (2)-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor agonists induce opposite effects. In the present study, we investigated the effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) or intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of moxonidine (an a-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor agonist) on the salivation induced by the cholinergic agonist pilocarpine. Male Holtzman rats wish stainless steel cannula implanted into the lateral ventricle (LV) were used. In rats anesthetized with tribromoethanol (200 mg kg(-1)), saliva was collected using pre-weighed small cotton balls inserted in the animal's mouth. The treatment with moxonidine (5, 10 and 20 nmol in 1 mul) injected,i.c.v. reduced the salivation induced by pilocarpine (1 mg kg(-1)) injected i.p. (48 +/- 5, 17 +/- 2 and 15 +/- 2 mg min(-1) vs. control, 73 +/- 7 mg min(-1)). The same doses of moxonidine injected i.c.v. also reduced the salivary secretion induced by pilocarpine (500 nmol in 1 mul). injected i.c.v. (44 +/- 1, 14 +/- 2 and 20 +/- 3 mg min(-1) vs. control, 51 +/- 2 mg min(-1)). Injection of moxonidine (20 nmol in 0.1 ml) i.p. produced no chance on i.p. pilocarpine-induced salivation (58 +/- 4 mg min(-1) vs. control, 50 +/- 4 mg min(-1)). The results show that central, but not peripheral, injection of moxonidine inhibit,. pilocarpine-induced salivation, suggesting that central mechanisms activated by alpha (2)-adrenergic/imidazoline agonists inhibit cholinergic-induced salivation in rats.
