In this work we report the photoluminescence (PL) and interband absorption study of Si-modulation-doped multilayer InAs/GaAs quantum dots grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on (100) oriented GaAs substrates. Low-temperature PL shows a distinctive double-peak feature. Power-dependent PL and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirm that they stem from the ground states emission of islands of bimodal size distribution. Temperature-dependent PL study indicates that the family of small dots is ensemble effect dominated while the family of large dots is likely to be dominated by the intrinsic property of single quantum dots (QDs). The temperature-dependent PL and interband absorption measurements are discussed in terms of thermalized redistribution of the carriers among groups of QDs of different sizes in the ensemble. In this paper we present a methodology and its implementation for the design and verification of programming circuit used in a family of application-specific FPGAs that share a common architecture. Each member of the family is different either in the types of functional blocks contained or in the number of blocks of each type. The parametrized design methodology is presented here to achieve this goal. Even though our focus is on the programming circuitry that provides the interface between the FPGA core circuit and the external programming hardware, the parametrized design method can be generalized to the design of entire chip for all members in the FPGA family. The method presented here covers the generation of the design RTL files and the support files for synthesis, place-and-route layout and simulations. The proposed method is proven to work smoothly within the complete chip design methodology. We will describe the implementation of this method to the design of the programming circuit in details including the design flow from the behavioral-level design to the final layout as well as the verification. Different package options and different programming modes are included in the description of the design. The circuit design implementation is based on SMIC 0.13-micron CMOS technology.

The electronic and the magnetic structure of the Nd2Fe17N1 phase in the family of Nd-Fe-N ternary compounds have been calculated using the first-principles, spin-polarized orthogonalized linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals method. Results are presented in the form of site-decomposed and spin-projected partial density of states. The occupation sites of the three N atoms are determined by an average radial distribution of all possible N site configurations. Both cases of N occupying the 3b and the 18g sites are studied. The results indicate that the 6c Fe sites have the maximum and the 18h Fe sites have the minimum local moments. This is in good agreement with experiment. It is concluded that the influence on the local moment due to lattice expansion is less important compared to that due to interatomic interaction between the N atom and its neighbors. The results also show the important role of N atoms in raising the Curie temperature of this compound.

Wavefront coding is a powerful technique that can be used to extend the depth of field of an incoherent imaging system. By adding a suitable phase mask to the aperture plane, the optical transfer function of a conventional imaging system can be made defocus invariant. Since 1995, when a cubic phase mask was first suggested, many kinds of phase masks have been proposed to achieve the goal of depth extension. In this Letter, a phase mask based on sinusoidal function is designed to enrich the family of phase masks. Numerical evaluation demonstrates that the proposed mask is not only less sensitive to focus errors than cubic, exponential, and modified logarithmic masks are, but it also has a smaller point-spread-function shifting effect. A novel family of hybrid catalyst with high turnover frequency (TOF) and high selectivity towards aldehydes for hydroformylation of olefins could be successfully approached through direct coordination with the PPh3 ligand to the highly dispersed Rh metal particle precursors. A further advantage is that the catalyst is easily prepared and recyclable. The results revealed that hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes dominantly took place on the surface of PPh3 ligand modified Rh metal particles of the hybrid catalyst. It was found that the formation of chemical coordination bond between the Rh metal particles and the lone-pair electron of PPh3 was evident through the TG and P-31 NMR measurement. Moreover, the addition of PPh3 onto the Rh/SiO2 exert a significant influence on the adsorption state of reactant CO, H-2 and C2H4 on the PPh3-Rh/SiO2 sample, which probably lead to good catalytic performances for hydroformylation of olefins. From the chemical bond viewpoint, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of the family of new oxoborates Ca4ReO(BO3)(3) (CReOB, Re = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Y) have been theoretically predicted. The d(11) tensor coefficient of CReOB is predicted to be -11 d(36)(KDP), which is the largest d(ij) tensor that has been found in borate crystals. From the structural characteristic of CReOB, we find the isolated BO33- clusters play a dominant role in contributions to the total nonlinearity, and the largest d(11) tensor of CReOB-type crystals is also ascribed to these BO33- clusters. We also find the NLO property of this family does not change dramatically for different rare-earth elements. The details of the calculation of CGdOB only are presented.

The effects of irradiation on some members of the family of aromatic polymers with a cardo group, such as polyetherketone with a cardo group (PEK-C) and polyethersulfone with a cardo group (PES-C), were studied. It was found that PEK-C and PES-C can be crosslinked by irradiation under vacuum. Moreover, it was also found that the intensity of the shake-up peak of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for PEK-C and PES-C varies with irradiation dose. Gelation doses (Rg) of PEK-C and PES-C were estimated from the XPS shake-up peak.

Artemia has evolved a unique developmental pattern of encysted embryos to cope with various environmental threats. Cell divisions totally cease during the preemergence developmental stage from gastrula to prenauplius. The molecular mechanism of this, however, remains unknown. Our study focuses on the involvement of p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK), a family of serine/threonine kinase-mediating signal transduction downstream of mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades, in the termination of cell cycle arrest during the post-embryonic development of Artemia-encysted gastrula. With immunochemistry, morphology, and cell cycle analysis, the identified Artemia RSK was established to be specifically activated during the post-embryonic and early larval developmental stages when arrested cells of encysted embryos resumed mitoses. In vivo knockdown of RSK activity by RNA interference, kinase inhibition, and antibody neutralization consistently induced defective larvae with distinct gaps between the exoskeleton and internal tissues. In these abnormal individuals, mitoses were detected to be largely inhibited in the affected regions. These results display the requirement of RSK activity during Artemia development and suggest its role in termination of cell cycle (G(2)/M phase) arrest and promotion of mitogenesis. Our findings may, thus, provide insights into the regulation of cell division during Artemia post-embryonic development and reveal further aspects of RSK functions.

A full-length cDNA encoding vitellogenin (Vg) was cloned from Chinese shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis using RACE method. The full-length cDNA consist of 7,942 nucleotides including a 7,761 bp open reading frame, which encodes 2,587 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequence showed high (from 94% to 37%) identity with other known crustacean Vgs. In addition, a consensus cleavage site (R-X-K/R-R) recognized by an endopeptidase and a member of subtilisin family of serine protease were identified in the deduced Vg precursor. RT-PCR analysis shown that Vg mRNA can be detected in both ovary and hepatopancreas of vitellogenic females but not in other experimental tissues including muscle, heart, lymph organ, gill, haemocytes and intestine. These results suggest that the Vg gene may be expressed exclusively in mature females, and both ovary and hepatopancreas are the possible tissues for Vg synthesis in F. chinensis. In addition, Vg gene is detected in genomic DNA of both females and males.

Penaeidins, members of a new family of antimicrobial peptides constitutively produced and stored in the haemocytes of penaeid shrimp, display antimicrobial activity against bacteria, and fungi. Here, a DNA sequence encoding the mature Ch-penaeidin peptide was cloned into the pPIC9K vector and transformed into Pichia pastoris. The transformed cells were screened for multi-copy plasmids using increasing concentrations of G418. Positive colonies carrying chromosomal integrations of the Chp gene were identified by phenotype and PCR. When transformed cells were induced with methanol, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting revealed the production of a similar to6100 Da recombinant CHP (rCHP) expression product. Large scale expression revealed that rCHP was produced at 108 mg/L under optimal conditions in the highest Chp-producing P. pastoris clone. The antimicrobial activities of rCHP were studied by liquid phase analysis, which revealed that rCHP exhibited activities against some Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, but had a relatively low activity against some fungi. Purification of rCHP by cation exchange chromatography and subsequent automated amino acid sequencing revealed the presence of four additional amino acids (YVEF) at the N-terminus that belonged to the cleaved fusion signal peptide; these residues may account for the observed decrease in antifungal activity. Together, these observations indicate that rCHP is an effective antimicrobial peptide that can be successfully produced at high levels in the yeast, and therefore may be a potential antimicrobial candidate for practical use. Arginine kinase (AK) was previously reported as a phosphagen-ATP phosphotransferase found in invertebrates. In this study, an 1184 bp cDNA was cloned and sequenced. It contained an open reading frame of 1068 bp that coded for 356 deduced amino acids of AK in Fenneropenaeus chinensis. The calculated molecular mass of AK is 40129.73 Da and pI is 5.92. The predicted protein showed a high level of identity to known AK in invertebrates and creatine kinase from vertebrates, which belong to a conserved family of ATP:guanidino phospho-transferases. In addition, AK protein in plasma of F. chinensis was identified using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) according to the calculated molecular mass and pI. AK was significantly decreased in the plasma of F. chinensis at 45 min and recovered at 3 It after laminarin injection as confirmed by 2DE and ESI-MS. The results showed that AK was one of the most significantly changed proteins on two-dimensional gel in the plasma proteins of F. chinensis at 45 min and 3 It after simulation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Cyanobacteria are the oldest life form making important contributions to global CO2 fixation on the Earth. Phycobilisomes (PBSs) are the major light harvesting systems of most cyanobacteria species. Recent availability of the whole genome database of cyanobacteria provides us a global and further view on the complex structural PBSs. A PBSs linker family is crucial in structure and function of major light-harvesting PBSs complexes. Linker polypeptides are considered to have the same ancestor with other phycobiliproteins (PBPs), and might have been diverged and evolved under particularly selective forces together. In this paper, a total of 192 putative linkers including 167 putative PBSs-associated linker genes and 25 Ferredoxin-NADP oxidoreductase (FNR) genes were detected through whole genome analysis of all 25 cyanobacterial genomes (20 finished and 5 in draft state). We compared the PBSs linker family of cyanobacteria in terms of gene structure, chromosome location, conservation domain, and polymorphic variants, and discussed the features and functions of the PBSs linker family. Most of PBSs-associated linkers in PBSs linker family are assembled into gene clusters with PBPs. A phylogenetic analysis based on protein data demonstrates a possibility of six classes of the linker family in cyanobacteria. Emergence, divergence, and disappearance of PBSs linkers among cyanobacterial species were due to speciation, gene duplication, gene transfer, or gene loss, and acclimation to various environmental selective pressures especially light.

Tetraspanins belongs to the transmembrane 4 superfamily(TM4SF). They can be as a bridge to connect the proteins outside or inside the cell membrane. A tetraspanins web is formed by the tetraspnins-proteins complex, and the web is believed to involve in fundamental functions of immunity system, and consequnently, signaling between cells and inside cells, regulating cell activation and adhesion, participating in the identification and infection of some virus. As a family of conservative transmembrane proteins, tetraspanins play multiplex roles in invertebrate. It was described how tetraspanin microdomains might have functions in the immune system, and how they contact with virus. In addition, the important role of tetraspanins in the innate immune system of invertebrate were discussed.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are an ancient family of pattern recognition receptors, which show homology with the Drosophila Toll protein and play key roles in detecting various non-self substances and then initiating and activating immune system. In this report, the full length of the first bivalve TLR (named as CfToll-1) is presented. CfToll-1 was originally identified as an EST (expressed sequence tag) fragment from a cDNA library of Zhikong scallop (Chlamys farreri). Its complete sequence was obtained by the construction of Genome Walker library and 5' RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA end) techniques. The full length cDNA of CfToll-1 consisted of 4308 nucleotides with a polyA tail, encoding a putative protein of 1198 amino acids with a 5' UTR (untranslated region) of 211 bp and a 3'UTR of 500 bp. The predicted amino acid sequence comprised an extracellular domain with a potential signal peptide, nineteen leucine-rich repeats (LRR), two LRR-C-terminal (LRRCT) motifs, and a LRR-N-terminal (LRRNT), followed by a transmembrane segment of 20 amino acids, and a cytoplasmic region of 138 amino acids containing the Toll/IL-1R domain (TIR). The deduced amino acid sequence of CfToll-1 was homologous to Drosophila melanogaster Tolls (DmTolls) with 23-35% similarity in the full length amino acids sequence and 30-54% in the TIR domain. Phylogenetic analysis of CfToll-1 with other known TLRs revealed that CfToll-1 was closely related to DmTolls. An analysis of the tissue-specific expression of the CfToll-1 gene by Real-time PCR showed that the transcripts were constitutively expressed in tissues of haemocyte, muscle, mantle, heart, gonad and gill. The temporal expressions of CfToll-1 in the mixed primary cultured haemocytes were observed after the haemocytes were treated with 1 mu g ml(-1) and 100 ng ml(-1) lipopolysaccharide (LPS), respectively. The expression of CfToll-1 was up-regulated and increased about 2-fold at 6 h with the treatment of 1 mu g ml(-1) LPS. The expression of CfToll-1 was down-regulated with the treatment of 100 ng ml(-1) LPS. The results indicated that the expression of CfToll-1 could be regulated by LPS, and this regulation was dose-dependent. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
