Experiments on Ge15Tc85-xSix glasses (2 <= x <= 12) using alternating differential scanning calorimetry (ADSC) indicate that these glasses exhibit one glass transition and two crystallization reactions upon heating. The glass transition temperature has been found to increase almost linearly with silicon content, in the entire composition tie-line. The first crystallization temperature (T-cl) exhibits an increase with silicon content for x<5; T-cl remains almost a constant in the composition range 5 < x <= 10 and it increases comparatively more sharply with silicon content thereafter. The specific heat change (Delta C-p) is found to decrease with an increase in silicon content, exhibiting a minimum at x=5 (average coordination number, (r) = 2.4); a continuous increase is seen in Delta C-p with silicon concentration above x = 5. The effects seen in the variation with composition of T-cl and Delta C-p at x=5, are the specific signatures of the mean-field stiffness threshold at (r) = 2.4. Furthermore, a broad trough is seen in the enthalpy change (Delta H-NR), which is indicative of a thermally reversing window in Ge15Te85-xSix glasses in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6 (2.34 <= (r) <= 2.42).

Reaction of five N,N′-bis(aryl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides (H2L-R, where H2 denotes the two acidic protons and R (R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl and NO2) the para substituent in the aryl fragment) with [Ru(trpy)Cl3](trpy = 2,2′,2″-terpyridine) in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords a group of complexes of the type [RuII(trpy)(L-R)], each of which contains an amide ligand coordinated to the metal center as a dianionic tridentate N,N,N-donor along with a terpyridine ligand. Structure of the [RuII(trpy)(L-Cl)] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the Ru(II) complexes are diamagnetic, and show characteristic 1H NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on the [RuII(trpy)(L-R)] complexes shows a Ru(II)–Ru(III) oxidation within 0.16–0.33 V versus SCE. An oxidation of the coordinated amide ligand is also observed within 0.94–1.33 V versus SCE and a reduction of coordinated terpyridine ligand within −1.10 to −1.15 V versus SCE. Constant potential coulometric oxidation of the [RuII(trpy)(L-R)] complexes produces the corresponding [RuIII(trpy)(L-R)]+ complexes, which have been isolated as the perchlorate salts. Structure of the [RuIII(trpy)(L-CH3)]ClO4 complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the Ru(III) complexes are one-electron paramagnetic, and show anisotropic ESR spectra at 77 K and intense LMCT transitions in the visible region. A weak ligand-field band has also been shown by all the [RuIII(trpy)(L-R)]ClO4 complexes near 1600 nm.

Electrical switching and differential scanning calorimetric studies are undertaken on bulk As20Te80-xGax glasses, to elucidate the network topological thresholds. It is found that these glasses exhibit a single glass transition (T-g) and two crystallization reactions (T-cl & T-c2) upon heating. It is also found that there is only a marginal change in T-g with the addition of up to about 10% of Ga; around this composition an increase is seen in 7, which culminates in a local maximum around x = 15. The decrease exhibited in T, beyond this composition, leads to a local minimum at x = 17.5. Further, the As20Te80-xGax glasses are found to exhibit memory type electrical switching. The switching voltages (VT) increase with the increase in gallium content and a local maximum is seen in V-tau around x = 15. VT is found to decrease with x thereafter, exhibiting a local minimum around x = 17.5. The composition dependence of T-cl is found to be very similar to that of V-T of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Based on the present results, it is proposed that the composition x = 15 and x = 17.5 correspond to the rigidity percolation and chemical thresholds, respectively, of As20Te80-xGax glasses. Background: Congenital heart defects include a wide range of inborn malformations. Depending on the defect, the life expectancy of a newborn with cardiac anomaly varies from a few days to a normal life span. In most instances surgery, is the only treatment available. The late results of surgery have not been comprehensively investigated. Aims: Mortality, morbidity and the life situation of all Finnish patients who had been operated on for congenital heart defect during childhood were investigated. Methods: Patient and surgical data were gathered from all hospitals that had performed heart surgeries on children. Late mortality and survival data were obtained from the population registry, and the causes of deaths from Statistics Finland. Morbidity of patients operated on during 1953-1989 was assessed by the usage of medicines. The pharmacotherapy data of patients and controls were obtained from the Social Insurance Institute. The life situation of patients was surveyed by mailed questionnaire. Survival, causes of deaths and life situation of patients were compared with those of the general population. Results: A total of 7240 cardiac operations were performed on 6461 children during the first 37 years of cardiac surgery (1953-1989). The number of procedures constantly rose during this period, and the increase continued in later years. The patient material varied over time, as more defects became surgically treatable. During 1953-1989 the operative mortality (death within 30 days of surgery) was 6.9%. In the 1990s a slight rise occurred in early mortality, as increasingly complicated patients were surgically treated. During 2000-2003 practically no defects were beyond the operative range. Thus, the operative mortality of 4.4% was excellent, decreasing even further to 2.0% in 2004-2007. The overall 45-year survival of patients operated on in 1953-1989 was 78%, and the corresponding figure for the general population was 93%. Survival depended on the defect, being worst among patients with univentricular heart. Late survival was also better during the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century. Of the 6028 early survivors, 592 died late (>30 days) after surgery. A total of 397 deaths (67%) were related and 185 (31%) unrelated to congenital heart defect. The cause of death was unknown in 10 cases. Of those 5774 patients who survived their first operation and had complete follow-up, 16% were operated on several times. Seventeen percent of patients used medicines for cardiac symptoms (heart failure, arrhythmia, hypertension and coronary disease). Patients risk of using cardiac medicines was 2.16 (Cl 1.97-2.37) times higher than that of controls. Patients also had more genetic syndromes and mental retardation and more often used medicines for asthma and epilepsy. Adult patients who had been operated on as children had coped surprisingly well with their defects. Their level of education was similar and their employment level even higher than expected, and they were living in a steady relationship as often as the general population. Conclusions: Cardiac surgery developed rapidly, and nowadays practically all defects can be treated. The overall survival of all operated patients was 78%, 16% less than that of the general population. However, it was significantly better than the anticipated natural survival. However, many patients had health problems; 16% needed reoperations and 17% cardiac medicines to maintain their condition. Most of the patients assessed their general health as good and lived a normal life.

The structure and the mechanical properties of wood of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) were studied using small samples from Finland and Sweden. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the orientation of cellulose microfibrils (microfibril angle, MFA), the dimensions of cellulose crystallites and the average shape of the cell cross-section. X-ray attenuation and x-ray fluorescence measurements were used to study the chemical composition and the trace element content. Tensile testing with in situ XRD was used to characterise the mechanical properties of wood and the deformation of crystalline cellulose within the wood cell walls. Cellulose crystallites were found to be 192 284 Å long and 28.9 33.4 Å wide in chemically untreated wood and they were longer and wider in mature wood than in juvenile wood. The MFA distribution of individual Norway spruce tracheids and larger samples was asymmetric. In individual cell walls, the mean MFA was 19 30 degrees, while the mode of the MFA distribution was 7 21 degrees. Both the mean MFA and the mode of the MFA distribution decreased as a function of the annual ring. Tangential cell walls exhibited smaller mean MFA and mode of the MFA distribution than radial cell walls. Maceration of wood material caused narrowing of the MFA distribution and removed contributions observed at around 90 degrees. In wood of both untreated and fertilised trees, the average shape of the cell cross-section changed from circular via ambiguous to rectangular as the cambial age increased. The average shape of the cell cross-section and the MFA distribution did not change as a result of fertilisation. The mass absorption coefficient for x-rays was higher in wood of fertilised trees than in that of untreated trees and wood of fertilised trees contained more of the elements S, Cl, and K, but a smaller amount of Mn. Cellulose crystallites were longer in wood of fertilised trees than in that of untreated trees. Kraft cooking caused widening and shortening of the cellulose crystallites. Tensile tests parallel to the cells showed that if the mean MFA is initially around 10 degrees or smaller, no systematic changes occur in the MFA distribution due to strain. The role of mean MFA in defining the tensile strength or the modulus of elasticity of wood was not as dominant as that reported earlier. Crystalline cellulose elongated much less than the entire samples. The Poisson ratio νca of crystalline cellulose in Norway spruce wood was shown to be largely dependent on the surroundings of crystalline cellulose in the cell wall, varying between -1.2 and 0.8. The Poisson ratio was negative in kraft cooked wood and positive in chemically untreated wood. In chemically untreated wood, νca was larger in mature wood and in latewood compared to juvenile wood and earlywood.

The half-sandwhich ruthenium chloro complexes bearing chelated diphosphazane ligands, [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl{kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] [R = C6H3Me2-2,6] (1) and [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuCl{kappa(2)-P, P-X2PN(R)PYY'}] [R = Me, X = Y = Y' = OC6H5 (2); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = Y' = OC6H5 (3) or OC6H4'Bu-4 (4)] have been prepared by the reaction of CpRu(PPh3)(2)Cl with (RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2) [R = C6H3Me2-2,6 (L-1)] or by the reaction of [Cp*RuCl2](n) with X2PN(R)PYY' in the presence of zinc dust. Among the four diastereomers (two enantiomeric pairs) possible for the "chiral at metal" complexes 3 and 4, only two diastereomers (one enantiomeric pair) are formed in these reactions. The complexes 1, 2, 4 and [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl {kappa(2)-P,P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)] [Y = Ph (5) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)-(6)] react with NaOMe to give the corresponding hydride complexes [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] (7), [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P'-X2PN(R)PY2)] [R = Me, X = Y = OC6H5 (8); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = OC6H4'Bu-4 (9)] and [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH(kappa(2)-P, P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)][Y =Ph (10) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)(11a) and (SCSPSRu)-(11b)]. Only one enantiomeric pair of the hydride 9 is obtained from the chloro precursor 4 that bears sterically bulky substituents at the phosphorus centers. On the other hand, the optically pure trichiral complex 6 that bears sterically less bulky substituents at the phosphorus gives a mixture of two diastereomers (11a and 11b). Protonation of complex 7 using different acids (HX) gives a mixture of [(eta(5)- Cp)Ru(eta(2)-H-2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2))]X (12a) and [(eta(5)-Cp)Ru(H)(2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}]X (12b) of which 12a is the major product independent of the acid used; the dihydrogen nature of 12a is established by T, measurements and also by synthesizing the deuteride analogue 7-D followed by protonation to obtain the D-H isotopomer. Preliminary investigations on asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of 2-acetonaphthone in the presence of a series of chiral diphosphazane ligands show that diphosphazanes in which the phosphorus centers are strong pi-acceptor in character and bear sterically bulky substituents impart moderate levels of enantioselectivity. Attempts to identify the hydride intermediate involved in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation by a model reaction suggests that a complex of the type, [Ru(H)(Cl){kappa(2)-P,P-X2PN(R)PY2)(solvent)(2)] could be the active species in this transformation. Half sandwich complexes of the type [CpM(CO)(n)X] {X=Cl, Br, I; If, M=Fe, Ru; n=2 and if M=Mo; n=3} and [CpNiPPh3X] {X=Cl, Br, I} have been synthesized and their second order molecular nonlinearity (beta) measured at 1064 nm in CHCl3 by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique. Iron complexes consistently display larger beta values than ruthenium complexes while nickel complexes have marginally larger beta values than iron complexes. In the presence of an acceptor ligand such as CO or PPh3, the role of the halogen atom is that of a pi donor. The better overlap of Cl orbitals with Fe and Ni metal centres make Cl a better pi donor than Br or I in the respective complexes. Consequently, M-pi interaction is stronger in Fe/Ni-Cl complexes. The value of beta decreases as one goes down the halogen group. For the complexes of 4d metal ions where the metal-ligand distance is larger, the influence of pi orbital overlap appears to be less important, resulting in moderate changes in beta as a function of halogen substitution. Zervamicin-IIB (Zrv-IIB) is a 16 residue peptaibol which forms voltage-activated, multiple conductance level channels in planar lipid bilayers. A molecular model of Zrv-IIB channels is presented. The structure of monomeric Zrv-IIB is based upon the crystal structure of Zervamicin-Leu. The helical backbone is kinked by a hydroxyproline residue at position 10. Zrv-IIB channels are modelled as helix bundles of from 4 to 8 parallel helices surrounding a central pore. The monomers are packed with their C-terminal helical segments in close contact, and the bundles are stabilized by hydrogen bonds between glutamine 11 and hydroxyproline 10 of adjacent helices. Interaction energy profiles for movement of three different probes species (K+, Cl- and water) through the central pore are analyzed. The conformations of: (a) the sidechain of glutamine 3; (b) the hydroxyl group of hydroxyproline 10; and (c) the C-terminal hydroxyl group are "optimized" in order to maximize favourable interactions between the channel and the probes, resulting in favourable interaction energy profiles for all three. This suggests that conformational flexibility of polar sidechains enables the channel lining to mimic an aqueous environment.

The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Co with trivalent cations decompose irreversibly to yield oxides with the spinel structure. Spinel formation is aided by the oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III) in the ambient atmosphere. When the decomposition is carried out under N-2, the oxidation of Co(II) is suppressed, and the resulting oxide has the rock salt structure. Thus, the Co-Al-CO32-/Cl- LDHs yield oxides of the type Co1- Al-x(2x/3)rectangle O-x/3, which are highly metastable, given the large defect concentration. This defect oxide rapidly reverts back to the original hydroxide on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution. Interlayer NO3- anions, on the other hand, decompose generating a highly oxidizing atmosphere, whereby the Co-Al-NO3- LDH decomposes to form the spinel phase even in a N-2 atmosphere. The oxide with the defect rock salt structure formed by the thermal decomposition of the Co-Fe-CO32- LDH under N2, on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution, follows a different kinetic pathway and undergoes a solution transformation into the inverse spinel Co(Co, Fe)(2)O-4. Fe3+ has a low octahedral crystal field stabilization energy and therefore prefers the tetrahedral coordination offered by the structure of the inverse spinel rather than the octahedral coordination of the parent LDH. Similar considerations do not hold in the case of Ga- and In-containing LDHs, given the considerable barriers to the diffusion of M3+ (M=Ga, In) from octahedral to tetrahedral sites owing to their large size. Consequently, the In-containing oxide residue reverts back to the parent hydroxide, whereas this reconstruction is partial in the case of the Ga-containing oxide. These studies show that the reversible thermal behavior offers a competing kinetic pathway to spinel formation. Suppression of the latter induces the reversible behavior in an LDH that otherwise decomposes irreversibly to the spinel.

Close to the Mott transition, lattice degrees of freedom react to the softening of electron degrees of freedom. This results in a change of lattice spacing, a diverging compressibility, and a critical anomaly of the sound velocity. These effects are investigated within a simple model, in the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. The results compare favorably to recent experiments on the layered organic-conductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu[N(CN)(2)]Cl. We predict that effects of a similar magnitude are expected for V2O3, despite the much larger value of the elastic modulus of this material.

We present a search for the Higgs boson in the process $q\bar{q} \to ZH \to \ell^+\ell^- b\bar{b}$. The analysis uses an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions produced at $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV and accumulated by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). We employ artificial neural networks both to correct jets mismeasured in the calorimeter, and to distinguish the signal kinematic distributions from those of the background. We see no evidence for Higgs boson production, and set 95% CL upper limits on $\sigma_{ZH} \cdot {\cal B}(H \to b\bar{b}$), ranging from 1.5 pb to 1.2 pb for a Higgs boson mass ($m_H$) of 110 to 150 GeV/$c^2$.

The infra-red and Raman spectra of ordinary and deuterated barium chloride dihydrate have been studied to throw light on the intramolecular hydrogen bonds in these two crystals. The frequencies of the stretching, bending and librational modes observed in infra-red and Raman spectra exclude the possibility of at least one of the OH.... Cl hydrogen bonds, contrary to the results of NMR and neutron diffraction studies.

We present a measurement of the top-quark width using $t\bar{t}$ events produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron collider and collected by the CDF II detector. In the mode where the top quark decays to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark, we select events in which one $W$ decays leptonically and the other hadronically~(lepton + jets channel) . From a data sample corresponding to 4.3~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, we identify 756 candidate events. The top-quark mass and the mass of $W$ boson that decays hadronically are reconstructed for each event and compared with templates of different top-quark widths~($\Gamma_t$) and deviations from nominal jet energy scale~($\Delta_{JES}$) to perform a simultaneous fit for both parameters, where $\Delta_{JES}$ is used for the {\it in situ} calibration of the jet energy scale. By applying a Feldman-Cousins approach, we establish an upper limit at 95$\%$ confidence level~(CL) of $\Gamma_t $
