Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are crucial in the innate immune response to pathogens, in that they recognize and respond to pathogen associated molecular patterns, which leads to activation of intracellular signaling pathways and altered gene expression. Vaccinia virus (VV), the poxvirus used to vaccinate against smallpox, encodes proteins that antagonize important components of host antiviral defense. Here we show that the VV protein A52R blocks the activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) by multiple TLRs, including TLR3, a recently identified receptor for viral RNA. A52R associates with both interleukin 1 receptor-associated kinase 2 (IRAK2) and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6), two key proteins important in TLR signal transduction. Further, A52R could disrupt signaling complexes containing these proteins. A virus deletion mutant lacking the A52R gene was attenuated compared with wild-type and revertant controls in a murine intranasal model of infection. This study reveals a novel mechanism used by VV to suppress the host immunity. We demonstrate viral disabling of TLRs, providing further evidence for an important role for this family of receptors in the antiviral response.

We study the behaviour of the glued trees algorithm described by Childs et al. in [1] under decoherence. We consider a discrete time reformulation of the continuous time quantum walk protocol and apply a phase damping channel to the coin state, investigating the effect of such a mechanism on the probability of the walker appearing on the target vertex of the graph. We pay particular attention to any potential advantage coming from the use of weak decoherence for the spreading of the walk across the glued trees graph. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

One of the main applications of serum proteomics is the identification of new biomarkers for animal disease or animal production. However, potential obstacles to these studies are the poor performance of affinity serum depletion methods based on human antigens when using animal samples, and loss of minor serum components bound to albumin and other proteins. In the present study, we have analyzed the efficiency and reproducibility of the ProteoMiner® beads with bovine and porcine serum samples, and compared to a traditional immunoaffinity-based albumin and IgG depletion system specific for human samples. The ProteoMiner kit is based on the use of a combinatorial peptide binding library and intends to enrich low-abundance proteins.

The methane solubility in five pure electrolyte solvents and one binary solvent mixture for lithium ion batteries – such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC) and the (50:50 wt%) mixture of EC:DMC was studied experimentally at pressures close to atmospheric and as a function of temperature between (280 and 343) K by using an isochoric saturation technique. The effect of the selected anions of a lithium salt LiX (X = hexafluorophosphate,

Based on experimental solubility data, the Henry’s law constant of the methane in these solutions were then deduced and compared together and with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software. From this study, it appears that the methane solubility in each pure solvent decreases with the temperature and increases in the following order: EC < PC < EC:EMC (50:50 wt%) < DMC < EMC < DEC, showing that this increases with the van der Walls force in solution. Additionally, in all investigated EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dm−3 of lithium salt electrolytes, the methane solubility decreases also with the temperature and the methane solubility is higher in the electrolyte containing the LiFAP salt, followed by that based on the LiTFSI one. From the variation of the Henry’s law constants with the temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy where then calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with methane in its hypothetical liquid state. Finally, the effect of the gas structure on their solubility in selected solutions was discussed by comparing methane solubility data reported in the present work with carbon dioxide solubility data available in the same solvents or mixtures to discern the more harmful gas generated during the degradation of the electrolyte, which limits the battery lifetime.

Background
Diabetic macular oedema (DMO) is a thickening of the central retina, or the macula, and is associated with long-term visual loss in people with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Clinically significant macular oedema (CSMO) is the most severe form of DMO. Almost 30 years ago, the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) found that CSMO, diagnosed by means of stereoscopic fundus photography, leads to moderate visual loss in one of four people within three years. It also showed that grid or focal laser photocoagulation to the macula halves this risk. Recently, intravitreal injection of antiangiogenic drugs has also been used to try to improve vision in people with macular oedema due to DR.Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is based on optical reflectivity and is able to image retinal thickness and structure producing cross-sectional and three-dimensional images of the central retina. It is widely used because it provides objective and quantitative assessment of macular oedema, unlike the subjectivity of fundus biomicroscopic assessment which is routinely used by ophthalmologists instead of photography. Optical coherence tomography is also used for quantitative follow-up of the effects of treatment of CSMO.
Objectives
To determine the diagnostic accuracy of OCT for detecting DMO and CSMO, defined according to ETDRS in 1985, in patients referred to ophthalmologists after DR is detected. In the update of this review we also aimed to assess whether OCT might be considered the new reference standard for detecting DMO.
Search methods
We searched the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), the Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA) and the NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHSEED) (The Cochrane Library 2013, Issue 5), Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid MEDLINE In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations, Ovid MEDLINE Daily, Ovid OLDMEDLINE (January 1946 to June 2013), EMBASE (January 1950 to June 2013), Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science (CPCI-S) (January 1990 to June 2013), BIOSIS Previews (January 1969 to June 2013), MEDION and the Aggressive Research Intelligence Facility database (ARIF). We did not use any date or language restrictions in the electronic searches for trials. We last searched the electronic databases on 25 June 2013. We checked bibliographies of relevant studies for additional references.
Selection Criteria
We selected studies that assessed the diagnostic accuracy of any OCT model for detecting DMO or CSMO in patients with DR who were referred to eye clinics. Diabetic macular oedema and CSMO were diagnosed by means of fundus biomicroscopy by ophthalmologists or stereophotography by ophthalmologists or other trained personnel.
Data collection and analysis
Three authors independently extracted data on study characteristics and measures of accuracy. We assessed data using random-effects hierarchical sROC meta-analysis models.
Main results
We included 10 studies (830 participants, 1387 eyes), published between 1998 and 2012. Prevalence of CSMO was 19% to 65% (median 50%) in nine studies with CSMO as the target condition. Study quality was often unclear or at high risk of bias for QUADAS 2 items, specifically regarding study population selection and the exclusion of participants with poor quality images. Applicablity was unclear in all studies since professionals referring patients and results of prior testing were not reported. There was a specific 'unit of analysis' issue because both eyes of the majority of participants were included in the analyses as if they were independent. In nine studies providing data on CSMO (759 participants, 1303 eyes), pooled sensitivity was 0.78 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.72 to 0.83) and specificity was 0.86 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.93). The median central retinal thickness cut-off we selected for data extraction was 250 µm (range 230 µm to 300 µm). Central CSMO was the target condition in all but two studies and thus our results cannot be applied to non-central CSMO.Data from three studies reporting accuracy for detection of DMO (180 participants, 343 eyes) were not pooled. Sensitivities and specificities were about 0.80 in two studies and were both 1.00 in the third study.Since this review was conceived, the role of OCT has changed and has become a key ingredient of decision-making at all levels of ophthalmic care in this field. Moreover, disagreements between OCT and fundus examination are informative, especially false positives which are referred to as subclinical DMO and are at higher risk of developing clinical CSMO.
Authors' conclusions
Using retinal thickness thresholds lower than 300 µm and ophthalmologist's fundus assessment as reference standard, central retinal thickness measured with OCT was not sufficiently accurate to diagnose the central type of CSMO in patients with DR referred to retina clinics. However, at least OCT false positives are generally cases of subclinical DMO that cannot be detected clinically but still suffer from increased risk of disease progression. Therefore, the increasing availability of OCT devices, together with their precision and the ability to inform on retinal layer structure, now make OCT widely recognised as the new reference standard for assessment of DMO, even in some screening settings. Thus, this review will not be updated further.

Cloud data centres are critical business infrastructures and the fastest growing service providers. Detecting anomalies in Cloud data centre operation is vital. Given the vast complexity of the data centre system software stack, applications and workloads, anomaly detection is a challenging endeavour. Current tools for detecting anomalies often use machine learning techniques, application instance behaviours or system metrics distribu- tion, which are complex to implement in Cloud computing environments as they require training, access to application-level data and complex processing. This paper presents LADT, a lightweight anomaly detection tool for Cloud data centres that uses rigorous correlation of system metrics, implemented by an efficient corre- lation algorithm without need for training or complex infrastructure set up. LADT is based on the hypothesis that, in an anomaly-free system, metrics from data centre host nodes and virtual machines (VMs) are strongly correlated. An anomaly is detected whenever correlation drops below a threshold value. We demonstrate and evaluate LADT using a Cloud environment, where it shows that the hosting node I/O operations per second (IOPS) are strongly correlated with the aggregated virtual machine IOPS, but this correlation vanishes when an application stresses the disk, indicating a node-level anomaly.

Copper is accumulated in recycled steels and is difficult to be removed during steelmaking processes when steel scrap is used as steel sources. Meanwhile, copper characteristics are of importance both to human beings and to animals and plants. In this paper, integrated copper coating was observed on the surface of copper-containing steels when the steels were heated at around 1150°C. However, the copper was separately scattered in and under the surface rust after heating at 1000°C. The forming mechanisms of copper coating are discussed in detail. By choosing a proper descaling reagent, self-generated oxidation-induced copper coating appeared on the steel surface. The method proposed in this work is environmentally friendly for nontoxic chemicals being used. In addition, this provides a new concept for producing protective composite by oxidizing from the substrate directly and there is no bonding problem.

It has been found that the catalytic activity and selectivity of a metal film deposited on a solid electrolyte could be enhanced dramatically and in a reversible way by applying an electrical current or potential between the metal catalyst and the counter electrode (also deposited on the electrolyte). This phenomenon is know as NEMCA [S. Bebelis, C.G. Vayenas, Journal of Catalysis, 118 (1989) 125-146.] or electrochemical promotion (EP) [J. Prichard, Nature, 343 (1990) 592.] of catalysis. Yttria-doped barium zirconate, BaZr0.9Y0.1O3 - α (BZY), a known proton conductor, has been used in this study. It has been reported that proton conducting perovskites can, under the appropriate conditions, act also as oxide ion conductors. In mixed conducting systems the mechanism of conduction depends upon the gas atmosphere that to which the material is exposed. Therefore, the use of a mixed ionic (oxide ion and proton) conducting membrane as a support for a platinum catalyst may facilitate the tuning of the promotional behaviour of the catalyst by allowing the control of the conduction mechanism of the electrolyte. The conductivity of BZY under different atmospheres was measured and the presence of oxide ion conduction under the appropriate conditions was confirmed. Moreover, kinetic experiments on ethylene oxidation corroborated the findings from the conductivity measurements showing that the use of a mixed ionic conductor allows for the tuning of the reaction rate. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a new method for measuring anterior chamber volume (ACV). DESIGN: Observational case series. METHODS: The authors measured ACV using the anterior chamber (AC) optical coherence tomographer (OCT) and applied image-processing software developed by them. Repeatability was evaluated. The ACV was measured in patient groups with normal ACs, shallow ACs, and deep ACs. The volume difference before and after laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) was analyzed for the shallow and deep groups. RESULTS: Coefficients of repeatability for intraoperator, interoperator, and interimage measurements were 0.406%, 0.958%, and 0.851%, respectively. The limits of agreement for intraoperator and interoperator measurement were -0.911 microl to 1.343 microl and -7.875 microl to -2.463 microl, respectively. There were significant ACV differences in normal, shallow, and deep AC eyes (P < .001) and before and after LPI in shallow AC (P < .001) and deep AC (P = .008) eyes. CONCLUSIONS: The ACV values obtained by this method were repeatable and in accord with clinical observation.
