Communication: Coatings Of Yellow gamma-WO3 are deposited on glass by APCVD of WOCl4 and either ethanol or ethylacetate at 350-450degreesC. The yellow films show significant photoactivity for the destruction of stearic acid, and photoinduced superhydrophilicity. Preparation of blue reduced WO2.92 films from the same reaction at higher substrate temperatures of 500-600degreesC (Figure) is also found to be possible. These films show no photoactivity, but can be converted into the fully stoichiometric photoactive form simply by heating in air.

A novel route involving atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD) is reported for coating Nb2O5 onto glass substrates via the reaction of NbCl5 and ethyl acetate at 400-660degreesC. Raman spectroscopy is shown to be a simple diagnostic tool for the analysis of these thin films. The contact angle of water on Nb2O5-coated glass drops on UV irradiation from 60degrees to 5-20degrees. XPS Analysis showed that the Nb:O ratio of the film was 1:2.5. Glancing angle X-ray diffraction showed that all films were crystalline, with only a single phase being observed; this has some preferred orientation in the (201) plane of Nb2O5. The niobium(V) oxide materials show minimal photocatalytic ability to degrade organic material.

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of titanium dioxide coatings on glass substrates was achieved by the reaction of TiCl4 and a co-oxygen source (MeOH, EtOH, (PrOH)-Pr-i or H2O) at 500-650degreesC. The coatings show excellent uniformity, surface coverage and adherence. Growth rates were of the order of 0.3 mum min(-1) at 500degreesC. All films are crystalline and single phase with XRD showing the anatase TiO2 diffraction pattern; a = 3.78(1), c = 9.51(1) Angstrom. Optically, the films show minimal reflectivity from 300-1600 nm and 50-80% total transmission from 300-800 nm. Contact angles are in the range 20-40degrees for as-prepared films and 1-10degrees after 30 min irradiation at 254 nm. All of the films show significant photocatalyic activity as regards the destruction of an overlayer of stearic acid.

We have investigated the generation of high harmonics from the interaction of 150 fsec, 790 nm, and 395 nm laser pulses with solid targets. Experiments are presented that demonstrate a strong dependence of the conversion efficiency on the temporal pulse shape and the resulting density scale length (L/lambda) of the preformed plasma. The highest conversion efficiencies are achieved for short density scale lengths (L/lambda less than or equal to 0.4), which result from high contrast ratio pulse interactions. The development of current instabilities behind the front of a cylindrically expanding plasma has been investigated experimentally via proton probing techniques. A multitude of tubelike filamentary structures is observed to form behind the front of a plasma created by irradiating solid-density wire targets with a high-intensity (I~1019??W/cm2), picosecond-duration laser pulse. These filaments exhibit a remarkable degree of stability, persisting for several tens of picoseconds, and appear to be magnetized over a filament length corresponding to several filament radii. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate that their formation can be attributed to a Weibel instability driven by a thermal anisotropy of the electron population. We suggest that these results may have implications in astrophysical scenarios, particularly concerning the problem of the generation of strong, spatially extended and sustained magnetic fields in astrophysical jets.

Here a self-consistent one-dimensional continuum model is presented for a narrow gap plane-parallel dc glow discharge. The governing equations consist of continuity and momentum equations for positive and negative ions and electrons coupled with Poisson's equation. A singular perturbation method is developed for the analysis of high pressure dc glow discharge. The kinetic processes of the ionization, electron attachment, and ion-ion recombination are included in the model. Explicit results are obtained for the asymptotic limits: delta=(r(D)/L)(2)--> 0, omega=(r(S)/L)(2)--> 0, where r(D) is the Debye radius, r(S) is recombination length, and L is the gap length. The discharge gap divides naturally into four layers with multiple space scales: anode fall region, positive column, transitional region, cathode fall region and diffusion layer adjacent to the cathode surface, its formation is discussed. The effects of the gas pressure, gap spacing and dc voltage on the electrical properties of the layers and its dimension are investigated. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Optical emission spectra from a low-pressure Ar plasma were studied with high spatial resolution. It has been shown that the intensity ratios of Ar lines excited through metastable levels to those excited directly from the ground state are sensitive to the shape of electron energy distribution function. From these measurements, important information on the spatial variation of plasma parameters can be obtained. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)01629-0].

Time-resolved optical absorption spectroscopy techniques were used to study Ba, metastable Ba+, and YO absorptions in the laser-produced plasma plume from a YBa2Cu3O7 target. Results obtained indicate an initial explosive removal of material from the target sur-face followed by a subsequent evaporation process. Some YO is ejected from the target in molecular form, particularly at laser fluence

The optimization of interrelated deposition parameters during deposition of in situ YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on MgO substrates by KrF laser ablation was systematically studied in a single experimental chamber. The optimum condition was found to be a substrate temperature of 720-degrees-C and a target-substrate distance of 5 cm in an oxygen partial pressure of 100 mTorr. These conditions produced films with T(c) = 87 K. The presence of YO in the plasma plume was found to be important in producing good quality films. The films were characterized by resistance-temperature measurements, energy dispersive x-ray analyses, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray-diffraction measurements, and the physical reasons underlying film quality degradation at parameter values away from optimal are discussed.

The use of atmospheric pressure nonthermal plasma represents an interesting and novel approach for the decontamination of surfaces colonized with microbial biofilms that exhibit enhanced tolerance to antimicrobial challenge. In this study, the influence of an atmospheric pressure nonthermal plasma jet, operated in a helium and oxygen gas mixture under ambient pressure, was evaluated against biofilms of Bacillus cereus,Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Within <4 min of plasma exposure, complete eradication of the two Gram-positive bacterial biofilms was achieved. Although Gram-negative biofilms required longer treatment time, their complete eradication was still possible with 10 min of exposure. Whilst this study provides useful proof of concept data on the use of atmospheric pressure plasmas for the eradication of bacterial biofilms in vitro, it also demonstrates the critical need for improved understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics related to such a potentially significant approach. © 2012 Federation of European Microbiological Societies.

The densities of five imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [CiC4-Im][BF 4]; 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [CiC 4Im][PF6]; 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, [C1C4Im][Tf 2N]; 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumbis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide, [C1C2Im][Tf2N]; l-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, [C1C2Im][EtSO4]) were measured as a function of temperature from (293 to 415) K and over an extended pressure range from (0.1 to 40) MPa using a vibratingtube densimeter. Knowledge of the variation of the density with temperature and pressure allows access to the mechanical coefficients: thermal expansion coefficient and isothermal compressibility. The effects of the anion and of the length of the alkyl chain on the imidazolium ring on the volumetric properties were particularly examined. The mechanical coefficients were compared with those of common organic solvents, water and liquid NaCl. Finally, a prediction model, based on an "ideal" volumetric behavior of the ILs, is proposed to allow calculation of the molar volume of imidazolium-based ionic liquids as a function of temperature. ©2007 American Chemical Society.

Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal failure. Increased free radical production and antioxidant depletion may contribute to the greatly increased risk of atherosclerosis in these patients. Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is an important antioxidant, the plasma form of which is synthesized mainly in the kidney (eGPX). The aim of this study was to assess the activity of eGPX in patients with end-stage renal failure on haemodialysis. Venous blood was collected from 87 haemodialysis patients immediately prior to and after dialysis and from 70 healthy controls. Serum eGPX activity was measured using hydrogen peroxide as substrate and immunoreactivity determined by ELISA. eGPX activity was significantly reduced in dialysis patients when compared to controls (106 +/- 2.7 and 281 +/- 3.6 U/l respectively, p <0.001). Following haemodialysis, eGPX activity rose significantly to 146 +/- 3.8 U/l, p <0.001, although remaining below control values (p <0.005). Immunoreactive eGPX, however, was similar in all groups (pre-dialysis 14.10 +/- 1.26 microg/ml, post-dialysis 14.58 +/- 1.35 microg/ml, controls 15.20 +/- 1.62 microg/ml, p = NS). A decrease was observed in the specific activity of eGPX in patients when compared to controls (8.81 +/- 1.14, 10.71 +/- 1.54 and 21.97 +/- 1.68 U/mg respectively, p <0.0001). eGPX activity is impaired in patients undergoing haemodialysis and so may contribute to atherogenesis in renal failure.
