Covering a nano-patterned titanium dioxide photonic crystal (PC) within a well-oriented film of dye-doped liquid crystal (LC), a distributed feedback laser is constructed whereby the emission characteristics can be manipulated in-situ using an electric field. This hybrid organic-inorganic structure permits simultaneous selectivity of both the beam pattern and laser wavelength by electrical addressing of the LC director. In addition, laser emission is obtained both in the plane and normal to the PC. Along with experimental data, a theoretical model is presented that is based upon an approximate calculation of the band structure of this birefringent, tuneable laser device. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Frequency response of a fiber ring resonator (FRR) composed of an ordinary optical coupler and a segment of optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The frequency response equation based oil small-signal modulation is derived and studied in detail. It is shown that the shape of the frequency response curve is very sensitive to the wavelength; as a result, the FRR can be applied to measure the wavelength of a lightwave source with high resolution. With this method, we demonstrate the measurement of tiny changes of wavelength of a DFB laser. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. Inc. The transient optical nonlinearity of a nematic liquid crystal doped with azo-dye DR19 is examined. The optical reorientation threshold of a 25-mu m-thick planar-aligned sample of 5CB using a 50 ns pulse duration 532 nm YAG laser pulse is observed to decrease from 800 mJ/mm(2) to 0.6 mJ/mm(2) after the addition of 1 vol% azo dopant, a reduction of three orders of magnitude. When using a laser pulse duration of 10 ns, no such effect is observed. Experimental results indicate that the azo dopant molecules undergo photoisomerization from trans-isomer to cis-isomer under exposure to light, and this conformation change reorients the 5CB molecules via intermolecular coupling between guest and host. This guest-host coupling also affects the azo photoisomerization process.

We fabricated a phosphor-conversion white light using an InGaN laser diode that emits 445 nm and phosphor that emit in the yellow. The InGaN laser diode was coupled to an optical fiber firstly and the phosphor was excited by the laser light output from the fiber. At 350 mA injection current the luminous flux and the luminous efficacy was 73 lm and 42.7 lm/W, respectively. The luminance was estimated to be 50 cd/mm(2). The relationship of the luminous flux and the luminous efficacy of the white light with injection current were measured and discussed.

1.5 mu m n-type InGaAsP/InGaAsP modulation-doped multiple quantum well (MD-MQW) DFB lasers have been fabricated successfully by low pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition (LP-MOCVD) technology. The experimental results indicate that n-type MD-MQWs can effectively reduce the threshold Current compared with conventional multiple quantum well DFB lasers. Theoretical analysis indicates that such an effect is due to the much smaller absorption loss and lower Auger recombination, compared with that in an undoped MQW structure. Moreover, the introduction of n-type dopant of suitable levels of concentration in the barrier layers enhances the dynamic characteristics of DFB lasers, due to a coupling between the adjacent quantum well layers and tunnelling-assisted injection, which can reduce the relatively long capture time and increase the effective differential gain 1/X dG/dn .

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon films co-doped with oxygen (O), boron (B) and phosphorus (P) were fabricated using PECVD technique. The erbium (Er) implanted samples were annealed in a N-2 ambient by rapid thermal annealing. Strong photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these samples were observed at room temperature. The incorporation of O, B and P could not only enhance the PL intensity but also the thermal annealing temperature of the strongest PL intensity. It seems that the incorporation of B or P can decrease the grain boundary potential barriers thus leading to an easier movement of carriers and a stronger PL intensity. Temperature dependence of PL indicated the thermal quenching of Er-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon is very weak.

A KrF (248 nm) excimer laser with a 38 ns pulse width was used to study pulsed laser annealing (PLA) on Mg-doped cubic GaN alms. The laser-induced changes were monitored by photoluminescence (PL) measurement. It indicated that deep levels in as-grown cubic GaN : Mg films were neutralized by H and PLA treatment could break Mg-H-N complex. The evolution of emissions around 426 and 468 nm with different PLA conditions reflected the different activation of the involved deep levels. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) in N-2 atmosphere reverts the luminescence of laser annealed samples to that of the pre-annealing state. The reason is that most H atoms still remained in the epilayers after PLA due to the short duration of the pulses and reoccupied the original locations during RTA. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The scattering matrix method is used to analyze the multiple reflection effect between the laser diode facet and the fiber grating facet by considering the fiber grating external cavity laser diode (FGECL) as a four-mirror cavity laser. When neglecting other important parameters such as butt-coupling distance between the diode and the fiber facets, coupling efficiency, external cavity length, it is shown that low reflectivity is not a crucial factor for the laser characteristics such as SMSR. Experimentally high SMSR fiber grating external cavity laser is fabricated with a relatively large residual facet reflectivity (about 1%), which is coincident with our simulation results.

We propose a method of effectively extending the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) gain bandwidth in a single-mode optical fiber to reduce group-velocity-dispersion (GVD)-dependent pulse spread of SBS slow light. This can be done by overlapping doublet SBS gain spectra synthesized from a single pump laser. Numerical calculations are performed to verify our proposed method. We find that there exists the optimum spectral separation between two center frequencies of the doublet SBS gain spectrum with respect to the inherent spectral width of the pump laser, which makes it possible to effectively reduce the signal pulse broadening due to GVD. We show that the maximum time delay of the amplified signal pulse can be approximately two times longer than that by a previously reported method using a single broadband pump laser.
