A produção comercial de mirtilos na América do Sul tem passado por mudanças importantes nos últimos anos, em função do aumento da oferta de frutos frescos dos principais países produtores, causando forte queda de preços em plena safra, entre os meses de dezembro e fevereiro. Uma alternativa para esta situação é a produção de mirtileiros de maturação precoce ou muito tardia, fora da época de meia-estação, caracterizada pelos menores preços da fruta. Em 2010, foram introduzidas no Brasil novas variedades de mirtileiros de baixa exigência em frio desenvolvidas pela Universidade da Flórida, que podem ser cultivadas em regiões quentes e apresentam uma frutificação mais precoce, quando comparadas com as variedades tradicionalmente cultivadas no Brasil. Essas novas variedades apresentam grande potencial para a produção precoce de mirtilos no País em regiões sem frio hibernal, aumentando significativamente a rentabilidade da cultura. Para viabilizar esta produção, é necessário validar estratégias de manejo para estas variedades, devido à falta de informação técnica sobre seu cultivo nas condições edafoclimáticas brasileiras. Atualmente, estäo sendo conduzidas as primeiras pesquisas fitotécnicas no Estado de Säo Paulo para avaliar o crescimento e a produção destas variedades na ausência total de frio, situação de ocorrência particular em poucos países produtores do mundo.

Este artículo muestra la complejidad del análisis de los datos cualitativos a partir de las ideas sobre el método planteadas por Morin y surge fruto del proceso analítico llevado a cabo durante la elaboración de nuestras tesis doctorales. Nuestra experiencia parte del método de las comparaciones constantes y representa un desafío dotado de contradicciones complementarias, donde los datos se agrupan y desagrupan, se integran y se desintegran de acuerdo con los principios hologramático, dialógico y recursivo. Como resultado establecemos las siguientes fases del proceso de análisis: 1) 'El todo': desarrollando ideas; 2) Del todo a las partes: separando y agrupando; 3) De lo particular a lo general: re-agrupando; 4) Descomponer el todo en sus partes sin perder el todo: integrando y relacionando; 5) Relacionar las partes que dan sentido al todo: identificando la categoría central.

La restauración ecológica de espacios afectados por minería a cielo abierto debe tener como objetivo reconstruir los ecosistemas naturales del entorno. En ambientes forestales, la presencia de especies leñosas proporciona el grado de integración y funcionalidad de las zonas en fase de recuperación, pero la presión social puede determinar que estas expectativas se limiten a obtener cubiertas de herbáceas para obtener una incorporación visual, 'verde', rápida. El uso de enmiendas orgánicas y riego puede contribuir a acelerar el establecimiento de esta cubierta. Sin embargo, los proyectos de restauración deben considerar técnicas a corto plazo que compatibilicen la estabilización del substrato con la recuperación de las comunidades vegetales de referencia. Una cubierta herbácea densa, podría comprometer el establecimiento de componentes clave de los ecosistemas de referencia. En este documento presentamos los resultados de la evaluación del efecto de la aplicación de compost y riego sobre la tasa de erosión, la cobertura vegetal y la respuesta de brinzales de especies leñosas en una cantera de caliza situada en el Macizo del Garraf (Barcelona, España). La presencia de cubiertas herbáceas integró visualmente las áreas rápidamente y tuvo un efecto positivo sobre el control de la erosión superficial, aunque su composición y estructura fueron muy distintas a las de su entorno natural. La adición de compost y el riego incrementaron la cubierta herbácea. Al margen de Pinus halepensis, las especies leñosas plantadas presentaron una supervivencia del 50-60%. Dos especies, Rhamnus alaternus y Rosmarinus officinalis se vieron negativamente afectadas por la cubierta herbácea. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, discutimos el efecto de la introducción de leñosas sobre la diversidad y su papel como núcleos de dispersión y posterior expansión.

Este artículo se inicia con la presentación de la moderna concepción científica de la enseñanza/ aprendizaje de la historia que considera que la mejor manera de enseñar esta disciplina social es reproduciendo el método que utiliza el historiador en la construcción de la historia. Se da a conocer una experiencia docente de integración de la didáctica del patrimonio en el curriculum de la formación de maestros. Siguiendo la idea ya señalada por otros especialistas, se defiende la necesidad de utilizar el patrimonio como un elemento del entorno que, en tanto que proyecta el pasado en el presente, se convierte en una fuente primaria de primer orden que favorece una enseñanza/aprendizaje de la historia y del método del historiador, de forma inducida, realista y por descubrimiento dirigido, mediante el análisis de las fuentes documentales de carácter muy diverso que encierra el propio elemento patrimonial estudiado. Al mismo tiempo, desde una perspectiva constructivista del aprendizaje manifiesta la necesidad de la previa investigación que sobre dicho elemento patrimonial debe realizar el profesor universitario de didáctica de las Ciencias Sociales para llevar a cabo y definitivamente normalizar este tipo de docencia innovadora.

Las ciudades evidencian procesos degenerativos y de desigualdad como resultado del ajuste político-económico a la globalización. Consecuencias de este fenómeno se observan a nivel barrial, lo que no es sólo el resultado del abandono de ciertas áreas sino, frecuentemente, es consecuencia directa o indirecta de acciones públicas. Los gobiernos están desarrollando políticas públicas y acciones para la regeneración de áreas deterioradas, con objetivos diversos, destacando la cohesión social como una prioridad. Este artículo se propone comparar y analizar las intervenciones desplegadas en Cataluña (Llei de Barris) y Chile (programa Quiero mi Barrio). Ambas iniciativas declaran basarse en enfoques integrales, por lo que resulta importante analizar la existencia de mecanismos para la coordinación e implementación de acciones transversales -sociales, físicas y/o económicas- que requieren acciones consorciadas y la inclusión de los principales actores concernidos. Una preocupación del equipo investigador es indagar en la relación entre el diseño de esas políticas y su traducción en prácticas efectivas.

O objetivo principal desse artigo é analisar o jogo social CityVille criado pela empresa Zynga, uma das últimas tendências do Facebook encontrado e disponível na web. A escolha do corpus game CityVille deve-se ao interesse de buscar compreender o por que esse jogo obteve tamanho sucesso e seja atualmente um dos jogos sociais/digitais de maior destaque e adeptos da rede social Facebook. Busca-se dessa maneira depreender de que maneira os jogos sociais tem evoluído e transformado as relações comunicacionais entre os usuários da rede. As redes sociais têm se tornando cada vez mais importantes e estão vinculadas a vida das pessoas. Com o desenvolvimento da linguagem digital, a forma com que as pessoas passaram a interagir se transforma, pois essas se comunicam através do computador em tempo real. O estudo busca fazer uma análise plural do jogo CityVille destacando distintos pontos de vista do jogo social. Propomos verificar as relações entre: o uso e os usuários, e a tecnologia e o conteúdo do jogo. Nas conclusões explicitaremos quais serão as direções possíveis do futuro dos jogos sociais da web.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 100 genetic variants contributing to BMI, a measure of body size, or waist-to-hip ratio (adjusted for BMI, WHRadjBMI), a measure of body shape. Body size and shape change as people grow older and these changes differ substantially between men and women. To systematically screen for age- and/or sex-specific effects of genetic variants on BMI and WHRadjBMI, we performed meta-analyses of 114 studies (up to 320,485 individuals of European descent) with genome-wide chip and/or Metabochip data by the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium. Each study tested the association of up to ~2.8M SNPs with BMI and WHRadjBMI in four strata (men ≤50y, men >50y, women ≤50y, women >50y) and summary statistics were combined in stratum-specific meta-analyses. We then screened for variants that showed age-specific effects (G x AGE), sex-specific effects (G x SEX) or age-specific effects that differed between men and women (G x AGE x SEX). For BMI, we identified 15 loci (11 previously established for main effects, four novel) that showed significant (FDR<5%) age-specific effects, of which 11 had larger effects in younger (<50y) than in older adults (≥50y). No sex-dependent effects were identified for BMI. For WHRadjBMI, we identified 44 loci (27 previously established for main effects, 17 novel) with sex-specific effects, of which 28 showed larger effects in women than in men, five showed larger effects in men than in women, and 11 showed opposite effects between sexes. No age-dependent effects were identified for WHRadjBMI. This is the first genome-wide interaction meta-analysis to report convincing evidence of age-dependent genetic effects on BMI. In addition, we confirm the sex-specificity of genetic effects on WHRadjBMI. These results may provide further insights into the biology that underlies weight change with age or the sexually dimorphism of body shape.

Bacterial-fungal interactions have important physiologic and medical ramifications, but the mechanisms of these interactions are poorly understood. The gut is host to trillions of microorganisms, and bacterial-fungal interactions are likely to be important. Using a neutropenic mouse model of microbial gastrointestinal colonization and dissemination, we show that the fungus Candida albicans inhibits the virulence of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa by inhibiting P. aeruginosa pyochelin and pyoverdine gene expression, which plays a critical role in iron acquisition and virulence. Accordingly, deletion of both P. aeruginosa pyochelin and pyoverdine genes attenuates P. aeruginosa virulence. Heat-killed C. albicans has no effect on P. aeruginosa, whereas C. albicans secreted proteins directly suppress P. aeruginosa pyoverdine and pyochelin expression and inhibit P. aeruginosa virulence in mice. Interestingly, suppression or deletion of pyochelin and pyoverdine genes has no effect on P. aeruginosa's ability to colonize the GI tract but does decrease P. aeruginosa's cytotoxic effect on cultured colonocytes. Finally, oral iron supplementation restores P. aeruginosa virulence in P. aeruginosa and C. albicans colonized mice. Together, our findings provide insight into how a bacterial-fungal interaction can modulate bacterial virulence in the intestine. Previously described bacterial-fungal antagonistic interactions have focused on growth inhibition or colonization inhibition/modulation, yet here we describe a novel observation of fungal-inhibition of bacterial effectors critical for virulence but not important for colonization. These findings validate the use of a mammalian model system to explore the complexities of polymicrobial, polykingdom infections in order to identify new therapeutic targets for preventing microbial disease.

Polyphenols are a major class of bioactive phytochemicals whose consumption may play a role in the prevention of a number of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes and cancers. Phenol-Explorer, launched in 2009, is the only freely available web-based database on the content of polyphenols in food and their in vivo metabolism and pharmacokinetics. Here we report the third release of the database (Phenol-Explorer 3.0), which adds data on the effects of food processing on polyphenol contents in foods. Data on >100 foods, covering 161 polyphenols or groups of polyphenols before and after processing, were collected from 129 peer-reviewed publications and entered into new tables linked to the existing relational design. The effect of processing on polyphenol content is expressed in the form of retention factor coefficients, or the proportion of a given polyphenol retained after processing, adjusted for change in water content. The result is the first database on the effects of food processing on polyphenol content and, following the model initially defined for Phenol-Explorer, all data may be traced back to original sources. The new update will allow polyphenol scientists to more accurately estimate polyphenol exposure from dietary surveys. Database URL: http://www.phenol-explorer.eu

Durante el curso académico 2001-2002 se desarrolló en la Universidad de Barcelona el Curso de Postgrado 'Innovación en la Docencia Universitaria' dirigido al profesorado novel de la misma. Finalizado el programa se hacía imprescindible conocer su contribución a la mejora de la docencia del profesorado debutante. A través de este estudio se pretende, por tanto, identificar y valorar los cambios, transformaciones y mejoras acaecidas en la práctica docente del profesorado novel como consecuencia de su participación en el Postgrado. El presente trabajo recoge estos aspectos articulados en una evaluación diferida del impacto del Curso de Postgrado. El enfoque metodológico usado ha sido cualitativo-fenomenológico En lo que se refiere a los criterios de evaluación, dos han sido los utilizados en este estudio: la utilidad percibida por el profesorado y la transferibilidad del conocimiento elaborado en el curso.

Abstract: Since ancient times, people have attributed a variety of health benefits to moderate consumption of fermented beverages such as wine and beer, often without any scientific basis. There is evidence that excessive or binge alcohol consumption is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as with work related and traffic accidents. On the contrary, at the moment, several epidemiological studies have suggested that moderate consumption of alcohol reduces overall mortality, mainly from coronary diseases. However, there are discrepancies regarding the specific effects of different types of beverages (wine, beer and spirits) on the cardiovascular system and cancer, and also whether the possible protective effects of alcoholic beverages are due to their alcoholic content (ethanol) or to their non-alcoholic components (mainly polyphenols). Epidemiological and clinical studies have pointed out that regular and moderate wine consumption (one to two glasses a day) is associated with decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, including colon, basal cell, ovarian, and prostate carcinoma. Moderate beer consumption has also been associated with these effects, but to a lesser degree, probably because of beer"s lower phenolic content. These health benefits have mainly been attributed to an increase in antioxidant capacity, changes in lipid profiles, and the anti-inflammatory effects produced by these alcoholic beverages. This review summarizes the main protective effects on the cardiovascular system and cancer resulting from moderate wine and beer intake due mainly to their common components, alcohol and polyphenols.

Hypertension is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death and disability in both developed and developing countries, affecting onequarter of the world"s adult population. Our aim was to evaluate whether the consumption of gazpacho, a Mediterranean vegetable-based cold soup rich in phytochemicals, is associated with lower blood pressure (BP) and/or reduced prevalence of hypertension in individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Methods and results: We selected 3995 individuals (58% women, mean age 67 y) at high cardiovascular risk (81% hypertensive) recruited into the PREDIMED study. BP, weight, and dietary and physical activity data were collected. In multivariate linear regression analyses, after adjustment, moderate and high gazpacho consumption categories were associated with reduced mean systolic BP of 1.9 mm Hg [95% confidence interval (CI): 3.4; 0.6] and 2.6 mm Hg (CI: 4.2; 1.0), respectively, and reduced diastolic BP of 1.5 mm Hg (CI: 2.3; 0.6) and 1.9 mm Hg (CI: 2.8; 1.1). By multiple-adjusted logistic regression analysis, gazpacho consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension, with OR Z 0.85 (CI: 0.73; 0.99) for each 250 g/week increase and OR Z 0.73 (CI: 0.55; 0.98) for high gazpacho consumption groups compared to the no-consumption group. Conclusions: Gazpacho consumption was inversely associated with systolic and diastolic BP and prevalence of hypertension in a cross-sectional Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk. The association between gazpacho intake and reduction of BP is probably due to synergy among several bioactive compounds present in the vegetable ingredients used to make the recipe.

Fire is a major agent involved in landscape transformation and an indirect cause of changes in species composition. Responses to fire may vary greatly depending on life histories and functional traits of species. We have examined the taxonomic and functional responses to fire of eight taxonomic animal groups displaying a gradient of dietary and mobility patterns: Gastropoda, Heteroptera, Formicidae, Coleoptera, Araneae, Orthoptera, Reptilia and Aves. The fieldwork was conducted in a Mediterranean protected area on 3 sites (one unburnt and two burnt with different postfire management practices) with five replicates per site. We collected information from 4606 specimens from 274 animal species. Similarity in species composition and abundance between areas was measured by the Bray-Curtis index and ANOSIM, and comparisons between animal and plant responses by Mantel tests. We analyze whether groups with the highest percentage of omnivorous species, these species being more generalist in their dietary habits, show weak responses to fire (i.e. more similarity between burnt and unburnt areas), and independent responses to changes in vegetation. We also explore how mobility, i.e. dispersal ability, influences responses to fire. Our results demonstrate that differences in species composition and abundance between burnt and unburnt areas differed among groups. We found a tendency towards presenting lower differences between areas for groups with higher percentages of omnivorous species. Moreover, taxa with a higher percentage of omnivorous species had significantly more independent responses of changes in vegetation. High- (e.g. Aves) and low-mobility (e.g. Gastropoda) groups had the strongest responses to fire (higher R scores of the ANOSIM); however, we failed to find a significant general pattern with all the groups according to their mobility. Our results partially support the idea that functional traits underlie the response of organisms to environmental changes caused by fire.
