Prefaces are often disregarded by readers who, more often than not, start without taking time to peruse them first. Sir Walter Scott knew this perfectly well, and he wrote about it, very wittily, in "A PostScript Which Should Have Been a Preface", the last chapter of his novel Waverley written in 1814: "most novel readers, as my own conscience reminds me, are apt to be guilty of the sin of omission respecting the same matter of prefaces". Scott refers to novel readers but poetry readers are also "guilty of the sin of omission", maybe even more so in so far as they may wish, understandably enough, to read only poetry and not a prose introduction. Many critics include prefaces in their analysis, but most of the time only as a means of interpreting the work they precede. Thus critics limit the role of prefaces simply to introductory materials and exclude any other potential interpretation. It is sometimes forgotten that the very presence or absence of a preface is already pregnant with meaning. [...]

Communication is the process of transmitting data across channel. Whenever data is transmitted across a channel, errors are likely to occur. Coding theory is a stream of science that deals with finding efficient ways to encode and decode data, so that any likely errors can be detected and corrected. There are many methods to achieve coding and decoding. One among them is Algebraic Geometric Codes that can be constructed from curves. Cryptography is the science ol‘ security of transmitting messages from a sender to a receiver. The objective is to encrypt message in such a way that an eavesdropper would not be able to read it. A eryptosystem is a set of algorithms for encrypting and decrypting for the purpose of the process of encryption and decryption. Public key eryptosystem such as RSA and DSS are traditionally being prel‘en‘ec| for the purpose of secure communication through the channel. llowever Elliptic Curve eryptosystem have become a viable altemative since they provide greater security and also because of their usage of key of smaller length compared to other existing crypto systems. Elliptic curve cryptography is based on group of points on an elliptic curve over a finite field. This thesis deals with Algebraic Geometric codes and their relation to Cryptography using elliptic curves. Here Goppa codes are used and the curves used are elliptic curve over a finite field. We are relating Algebraic Geometric code to Cryptography by developing a cryptographic algorithm, which includes the process of encryption and decryption of messages. We are making use of fundamental properties of Elliptic curve cryptography for generating the algorithm and is used here to relate both.

This document provides example feedback which has been generated following the marking of a class set of portfolios. It is used as a part of the Routes to Success Module, specifically on the section titled Sustaining Success. Students can read the feedback prior to completing the portfolio to alert them to the possible shortfalls which may occur when they undertake this type of task. The feedback is introduced in the context that the task of completing the portfolio is a developmental one, and that students can expect to learn and improve their performance for this type of task as they develop and refine their skills.

A video markscheme was created using a combination of Camtasia screen capture (on a Tablet PC) and 'live action' video taken with a camcorder. The resulting video supported students in the self-assessment of an organic chemistry exercise which had been set over the Easter vacation break. Feedback was collected from the students after the exercise and was overwhelmingly positive. The video won the 2010 award for 'Most Effective Use of Video in an Educational Context' from the Assocation for Learning Technology. DOWNLOAD THE ZIP FOLDER AND EXTRACT THE FILES TO ACCESS THEM.
