In a homemade UV-Ozone generator, different ignition tubes extracted from HID mercury vapor lamps were investigated, namely: 80, 125, 250 and 400 watts. The performance of the generator in function of the type of the ignition lamp was monitored by the measurements of the ozone concentration and the temperature increment. The results have shown that the 400 W set up presented the highest ozone production, which was used in the treatment of indium tin oxide (ITO) films. Polymer light emitting diodes were assembled using ITO films, treated for 10, 20 and 30 min, as an anode. The overall results indicate improvement of the threshold voltage (reduction) and electroluminescence of these devices.

The effects of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus on nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) rarely have been investigated. Among these, sensory disturbances, including chronic pain (CP), are frequent in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes induced by deep brain stimulation in the perception of sensory stimuli, either noxious or innocuous, mediated by small or large nerve fibers. Sensory detection and pain thresholds were assessed in 25 PD patients all in the off-medication condition with the stimulator turned on or off (on- and off-stimulation conditions, respectively). The relationship between the changes induced by surgery on quantitative sensory testing, spontaneous CP, and motor abilities were studied. Quantitative sensory test results obtained in PD patients were compared with those of age-matched healthy subjects. Chronic pain was present in 72% of patients before vs 36% after surgery (P = .019). Compared with healthy subjects, PD patients had an increased sensitivity to innocuous thermal stimuli and mechanical pain, but a reduced sensitivity to innocuous mechanical stimuli. In addition, they had an increased pain rating when painful thermal stimuli were applied, particularly in the off-stimulation condition. In the on-stimulation condition, there was an increased sensitivity to innocuous thermal stimuli but a reduced sensitivity to mechanical or thermal pain. Pain provoked by thermal stimuli was reduced when the stimulator was turned on. Motor improvement positively correlated with changes in warm detection and heat pain thresholds. Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation contributes to relieve pain associated with PD and specifically modulates small fiber-mediated sensations. We investigated the association between diet and head and neck cancer (HNC) risk using data from the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. The INHANCE pooled data included 22 case-control studies with 14,520 cases and 22,737 controls. Center-specific quartiles among the controls were used for food groups, and frequencies per week were used for single food items. A dietary pattern score combining high fruit and vegetable intake and low red meat intake was created. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the dietary items on the risk of HNC were estimated with a two-stage random-effects logistic regression model. An inverse association was observed for higher-frequency intake of fruit (4th vs. 1st quartile OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.43-0.62, p (trend) < 0.01) and vegetables (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.49-0.90, p (trend) = 0.01). Intake of red meat (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.13-1.74, p (trend) = 0.13) and processed meat (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.14-1.65, p (trend) < 0.01) was positively associated with HNC risk. Higher dietary pattern scores, reflecting high fruit/vegetable and low red meat intake, were associated with reduced HNC risk (per score increment OR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.84-0.97).

Seven sides of cadaver heads were used to compare the surgical exposures provided by the mini-modified orbitozygomatic (MOz) and supra-orbital (SO) approaches. The Optotrak 3020 computerized tracking system (Northern Digital, Waterloo, ON, Canada) was utilized to evaluate the area of anatomical exposure defined by six points: (1) ipsilateral sphenoid ridge; (2) most distal point of the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA); (3) most distal point of the ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery (PCA); (4) most distal point of the contralateral PCA; (5) most distal point of the contralateral MCA; and (6) contralateral sphenoid ridge. Additionally, angles of approach for the ipsilateral MCA bifurcation, ipsilateral ICA bifurcation, basilar artery tip, contralateral MCA and ICA bifurcation and anterior communicating artery (AcomA) were evaluated, first for SO and then for MOz. An image guidance system was used to evaluate the limits of surgical exposure. No differences in the area of surgical exposure were noted (p > 0.05). Vertical angles were significantly wider for the ipsilateral and contralateral ICA bifurcation, AcomA, contralateral MCA and basilar tip (p < 0.05) for MOz. No differences in horizontal angles were observed between the approaches for the six targets (p > 0.05). There were no differences in the limits of exposure. MOz affords no additional surgical working space. However, our results demonstrate systematically that vertical exposure is improved. The MOz should be performed while planning an approach to these regions and a wider exposure in the vertical axis is needed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transcranial sonography has become a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes. This is a non-invasive, low cost procedure. The main finding on transcranial sonography in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease is an increased echogenicity of the mesencephalic substantia nigra region. This hyperechogenicity is present in more than 90% of cases, and reflects a dysfunction in the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway. This study discussed how the hyperechogenicity of the substantia nigra may facilitate the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes.

Questa tesi è una panoramica di alcuni concetti base su cui si fonda la dinamica delle galassie. Nel primo capitolo vengono messi in evidenza i concetti più generali dal punto di vista morfologico- strutturale attraverso la classificazione di Hubble. Nel secondo capitolo si mette in evidenza come un sistema possa essere definito non collisionale (attraverso la stima del tempo di rilassamento ai due corpi) e le conseguenze che ne derivano come, per esempio, l' anisotropia dello stesso sistema che conferisce alla galassia la sua classica forma “schiacciata”. Vengono poi descritti la collisional Boltzmann equation (CBE) e il teorema del viriale in forma tensoriale . Integrando la CBE nello spazio delle velocità otteniamo tre equazioni note come equazioni di Jeans: queste hanno una struttura del tutto identica a quelle della fluidodinamica ma con alcune eccezioni significative che non permettono di descrivere completamente la dinamica delle galassie attraverso la fluidodinamica. Il terzo capitolo è un excursus generale sulle galassie ellittiche: dalla loro struttura alla loro dinamica. Dall' applicazione del teorema del viriale ad un sistema ellittico si può notare come la forma “schiacciata” delle galassie sia una conseguenza dell' anisotropia del sistema e sia dovuta solo in minima parte alla rotazione. Successivamente viene presentato un modello galattico (quello di Jeans), che ci permette di calcolare una distribuzione di massa del sistema attraverso un' equazione che purtroppo non ha soluzione unica e quindi ci rende impossibile calcolare il rapporto massa- luminosità. Infine viene descritto il fundamental plane che è una relazione empirica tale per cui ad ogni galassia viene associato un determinato valore di raggio effettivo, dispersione di velocità e luminosità. Nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo viene trattata la dinamica delle parti più esterne di una galassia: disco e bracci. La dinamica del disco è descritta attraverso la curva di rotazione che, come vedremo, ha delle caratteristiche abbastanza diverse da una curva di rotazione di tipo kepleriano (quella che ad esempio descrive l' andamento della velocità in funzione della distanza nel nostro sistema solare). Infine viene descritta la dinamica dei bracci e la teoria delle onde di densità di Lin e Shu, due astronomi americani, che riesce a descrivere compiutamente la nascita e l' evoluzione dei bracci a spirale.

Im Verlauf der vorgestellten Arbeit konnten die Kristallstrukturen zweier Atmungsproteine gelöst werden. Da diese Strukturen mit verschiedenen Auflösungen gelöst wurden, wurden für die beiden Modelle unterschiedliche Methoden verwendet.rnrnDie Kristalle des Hämoglobins des Meerschweinchens Cavia porcellus erlaubten eine Messung von Streureflexen bis zu einer Auflösung von 1.7 Ǻ. Damit konnten das Molecular Replacement und das folgende Refinement mit geringen Vorgaben durchgeführt werden.rnAnhand der ermittelten Struktur konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Höhenadaptation des Hämoglobins des Meerschweinchens auf einer Stabilisierung des R2-Zustandes und einer gleichzeitigen Destabilisierung des T-Zustandes beruht. Die zu Grunde liegenden Aminosäureaustausche konnten identifiziert und der resultierende Mechanismus postuliert werden. Die Durchführung von Mutagenese-Experimenten am Hämoglobin des Meerschweinchens könnte die vorgestellte Hypothese bestätigen.rnrnDie Kristallstruktur des 24-meren Hämocyanins aus Pandinus imperator konnte durch eine Kombination von Röntgenkristallographie und Homologiemodellierung mit einer Auflösung von 6.5 Ǻ gelöst werden. Allerdings wäre die Bestimmung der Phasen durch Molecular Replacement ohne die vor kurzem publizierte Kryo-EM Struktur nicht möglich gewesen [Cong et al., 2009].rnDamit ist es durch die Kombination verschiedener Methoden erstmalig gelungen die Struktur eines Hämocyanins dieser Größe (Mw = 1.7 MDa) zu lösen. Die Auflösung von 6.5 Ǻ, eine für die Kristallographie relativ geringe Auflösung, erlaubte die Bestimmung des Cα-Traces des Proteins mit hoher Genauigkeit.rnDurch die Kristallstruktur konnte das zu Grunde liegende Kryo-EM Modell aus [Cong et al., 2009] bestätigt werden. Insbesondere die Position der α-Helices konnte mittels Kristallographie mit einer höheren Genauigkeit bestimmt werden. Durch die Verwendung von OMIT-Maps wurde sichergestellt, dass die Struktur nicht "kopiert" wurde. Die Übereinstimmung ist deshalb auf die Struktur des Hämocyanins im gemessenen Kristall zurückzuführen, nicht auf einen Bias bei der Auswertung.rnAnhand der Kristallstruktur konnten für die Kooperativität im Trimer potentiell entscheidende Aminosäuren identifiziert werden. Diese Aminosäuren könnten im Vergleich zur bekannten trimeren Struktur aus Limulus polyphemus zur Ausbildung zusätzlicher Bindungen zwischen den Untereinheiten führen. Diese Bindungen könnten eine wichtige Rolle beim Konformationsübergang zwischen dem T- und R-Zustand spielen.rn

Recently published studies suggest that the anesthetic technique used during oncologic surgery affects cancer recurrence. To evaluate the effect of anesthetic technique on disease progression and long-term survival, we compared patients receiving general anesthesia plus intraoperative and postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia with patients receiving general anesthesia alone undergoing open retropubic radical prostatectomy with extended pelvic lymph node dissection.

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) and total artificial hearts have been in development for the last 50 years. Since their inception, simulators of the circulation with different degrees of complexity have been produced to test these devices in vitro. Currently, a new path has been taken with the extensive efforts to develop paediatric VADs, which require totally different design constraints. This paper presents the manufacturing details of an economical simulator of the systemic paediatric circulation. This simulator allows the insertion of a paediatric VAD, includes a pumping ventricle, and is adjustable within the paediatric range. Rather than focusing on complexity and physiological simulation, this simulator is designed to be simple and practical for rapid device testing. The simulator was instrumented with medical sensors and data were acquired under different conditions with and without the new PediaFlowTM paediatric VAD. The VAD was run at different impeller speeds while simulator settings such as vascular resistance and stroke volume were varied. The hydraulic performance of the VAD under pulsatile conditions could be characterized and the magnetic suspension could be tested via manipulations such as cannula clamping. This compact mock loop has proven to be valuable throughout the PediaFlow development process and has the advantage that it is uncomplicated and can be manufactured cheaply. It can be produced by several research groups and the results of different VADs can then be compared easily.
