The dimeric compound [Pd(dmba)(μ-Cl)]2 (1) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) reacts with KX, in methanol/acetone, affording the analogous dimeric pseudohalide-bridged species [Pd(dmba)(X)]2 [X = NCO(2), SCN(3), CN(4)]. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, NMR and thermogravimetric analysis. The IR data for 2-4 showed bands typical of coordinated pseudohalide ligands indicating clearly the occurrence of the exchange reaction. Their thermal behavior was investigated and suggested that their thermal stability is influenced by the bridging ligand. The thermal stability decreased in the order [Pd(dmba)(μ-SCN)]2>[Pd(dmba)(μ-Cl)] 2>[Pd(dmba)(;u-NCO)]2>[Pd(dmba)(μ-CN)]2. The X-ray results showed the formation of PdO as final decomposition product. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Solid-state M-2-MeO-BP compounds, where M represents bivalent Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and 2-MeO-BP is 2-methoxybenzylidenepyruvate have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravinietry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal stability and thermal decomposition of these compounds. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, crystallinity and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds.

This work deals with the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization of mono and polynuclear Pd(II) compounds obtained from the reaction between [PdCl2(MeCN)2] precursor and imidazolidine-2-thione (L1) and benzimidazoline-2-thione (L2). The interaction between [PdCl2(MeCN)2] and imidazolidine-2-thione, in the 1:2 molar ratio, using MeOH as solvent, yielded compound [Pd2Cl4(L1)4]Cl2 (1) whereas the complex [Pd2Br4(L1)4]Br2 (2) was obtained from the reaction between 1 and Br- ions. Binuclear compounds of general formulae [Pd2(L2)4]X23/2 MeOH {X= Cl-(3), Br-(4)} were synthesized using benzimidazoline-2-thione as ligand, employing the same procedure used in the synthesis of 1 and 2, respectively. The new complexes 1-4 are crystalline, air stable and soluble in methanol and dmso. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI/MS mass spectrometry and thermogravimetry. Coordination of the ligands L1 and L2 via sulphur atom was evidenced by the shift of the CS band (~499 cm-1, 1 and 2; ~620 cm-1, 3 and 4) to lower frequencies in comparison with those found in the free ligands (510 cm-1, L1; 660 cm-1, L2), indicating the weakening of the CS bom after coordination. ESI/EM mass spectra (positive mode) of the complexes 1-4 allowed atribute the molecular formulae [Pd2X4(L1)4]X2 {X= Cl-(1), Br-(2)} and [Pd2(L2)4]X2 {X= Cl-(3), Br-(4)} by the appearance of the peaks at m/z 794,61 [(1) + MeOH]+, m/z 836,77 [(2) - 2H - L1]+, m/z 810 [(3) - 2Cl]+, m/z 810 [(4) - 2Br]+. The TG-DTA curves showed that the complexes 1 and 2 are thermally stable up to 212 and 169º C, respectively, and further decompose to metallic palladium at 527º C (1, obt. 28,46 %; calcd. 27,88%) and 895º C (2, obt. 22,85 %; calcd. 22,62%). Compounds 3 and 4 exhibited an initial mass loss of ~5% between 25 -146º C related to the release of metanol molecules. The complexes 3...Fujimura Leite.

A general strategy for the assembly of dendrimeric metallo-cluster species based on tritopic trinuclear ruthenium acetate complexes is demonstrated. First, a central core consisting of a [Ru3O(CH3COO)(6)(TPEB)(3)]PF6 complex (G0), where TPEB is the tripodal 1,3,5-tri-4-pyridyl-1,2-ethenylbenzene ligand, was synthesized and then reacted with the end-capping complex [Ru3O(CH3COO)(6)(py)(2)(MeOH)]PF6, thus composing the first generation shell of a dendrimer encompassing twenty-one ruthenium ions (G1). The core and dendrimeric complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Vis, H-1 NMR, ESI-MS spectrometry and Differential pulse voltammetry. All results were consistent with the structure of that multinuclear cationic dendrimeric species. The isotopologic profile of daughter fragments and the strength of the metal-ligand bonds were carefully investigated providing the fragmentation pathway for the metallo-dendrimer upon ESI-MS dissociation conditions. Phosphorylated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) copolymers prepared by aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction with PCl3/AlCl3 were reacted with carbon dissulfite in order to introduce sulfophosphorylated groups into copolymers. These modifications were characterized by FTIR, elemental analysis, spectrophotometry, optical and scanning electron microscopy. The antibacterial activities of the phosphorylated and sulfophorylated copolymers were assessed against Escherichia coli ATCC25922 suspensions (10(3)-10(7) cells mL(-1)) using a column system. The unmodified copolymers did not have antibacterial activity against the E. coil suspensions but the phosphorylated and sulfophorylated copolymers showed significant bactericidal action for all E. coli concentrations. The sulfophosphorylated copolymers had higher antibacterial activity than the phosphorylated ones, mainly for high concentrations of E. coli cells. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The title compound [Ni(C20H15N2OS)(2)] is prepared by the reaction of metal acetate with the corresponding acylthiourea derivative. The complex is characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, and its structure is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Ni(II) ion is coordinated by the S and O atoms of two N-benzoyl-N',N'-diphenylthiourea ligands in a slightly distorted square-planar coordination geometry. The two O and two S atoms are mutually cis to each other. The substance crystallizes triclinic (P-1 space group) with cell dimensions a = 10.7262(9) , b = 12.938(3) , c = 14.2085(12) , alpha = 74.650(4)A degrees, beta = 78.398(4)A degrees, gamma = 68.200(5)A degrees, and two formula units in the unit cell. The structure is very close to the related N-(2-furoyl) Ni complex reported previously.

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocontainers, suitable as carriers for anionic drugs, were intercalated with Pravastatin drug using magnesium-aluminum and zinc-aluminum in a M-II/Al molar ratio equal 2 and different Al3+/Pravastatin molar ratios. Postsynthesis treatments were used in order to increase the materials crystallinity. Hybrid materials were characterized by a set of physical chemical techniques: chemical elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), mass coupled thermal analyses, vibrational infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and solid-state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Results were interpreted in light of computational density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for Sodium Pravastatin in order to assign the data obtained for the LDH intercalated materials. XRD peaks of LDH-Pravastatin material and the one-dimensional (1D) electron density map pointed out to a bilayer arrangement of Pravastatin in the interlayer region, where its associated carboxylate and vicinal hydroxyl groups are close to the positive LDH. The structural organization observed for the stacked assembly containing the unsymmetrical and bulky monoanion Pravastatin and LDH seems to be promoted by a self-assembling process, in which local interactions are maximized and chloride ion cointercalation is required. It is observed a high similarity among vibrational and C-13 NMR spectra of Na-Pravastatin and LDH-Pravastatin materials. Those features indicate that the intercalation preserves the drug structural integrity. Spectroscopic techniques corroborate the nature of the guest species and their arrangement between the inorganic layers. Changes related to carboxylate, alcohol, and olefinic moieties are observed in both vibrational Raman and C-13 NMR spectra after the drug intercalation. Thus, Pravastatin ions are forced to be arranged as head to tail through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between adjacent organic species. The thermal decomposition profile of the hybrid samples is distinct of that one observed for Na-Pravastatin salt, however, with no visible increase in the thermal behavior when the organic anion is sequestrated within LDH gap.

The synthesis and photoluminescent properties of Ln(III)-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and dibenzoylmethanate complexes (Ln = Eu(III) and Gd(III) ions) containing tertiary amides such as dimethylacetamide (DMA), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethylbenzamide (DMB) as neutral ligands are reported. The Ln complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration with EDTA, and infrared spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray structure data of the [Eu(DBM)(3).(DMA)] compound indicates that this complex crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group PT with the following cell parameters: a = 10.2580(3) angstrom, b = 10.3843(2) angstrom, c= 22.3517(5) angstrom, alpha = 78.906(2)degrees, beta = 78.049(2)degrees, lambda= 63.239(2)degrees, V= 2066.41(9) angstrom(3), and Z = 2. The coordination polyhedron for the Eu(III) complex may be described as an approximate C-2v distorted monocapped trigonal prism. The optical properties of the Eu(III) complexes were studied based on the intensity parameters and luminescence quantum yield (q). The values of the ohm(2) parameter of the Eu-DBM complexes are larger than those for the Eu-TTA complexes, indicating that the Eu(III) ion is in a more polarizable chemical environment in the former case. The geometries of the complexes have been optimized by using the Sparkle Model, and the results have been used to perform theoretical predictions of the ligand-to-metal energy transfer via direct and exchange Coulomb mechanisms. The aim of this project was to achieve a deep understanding of the mechanisms by which Baltic amber degrades, in order to develop techniques for preventive conservation of archaeological amber objects belonging to the National Museum of Denmark’s collections. To examine deterioration of Baltic amber, a starting point was to identify and monitor surface and bulk properties which are affected during degradation. The way to operate consisted of the use of accelerated ageing to initiate degradation of raw Baltic amber samples in different conditions of relative humidity, oxygen exposure or pH and, successively, of the use of non/micro-destructive techniques to identify and quantify changes in visual, chemical and structural properties. A large piece of raw Baltic amber was used to prepare several test samples for two different kinds of accelerated ageing: thermal-ageing and photo-ageing. During the ageing, amber samples were regularly examined through several analytical techniques related to different information: appearance/colour change by visual examination, photography and colorimetry; chemical change by infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis; rate of oxidation by oxygen measurement; qualitative analysis of released volatiles by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. The obtained results were analysed through both critical evaluation and statistical study. After the interpretation of the achieved data, the main relations between amber and environmental factors during the degradation process became clearer and it was possible to identify the major pathways by which amber degrades, such as hydrolysis of esters into alcohols and carboxylic acids, thermal-oxidation and photo-oxidation of terpenoid components, depolymerisation and decomposition of the chemical structure. At the end it was possible to suggest a preventive conservation strategy based on the control of climatic, atmospheric and lighting parameters in the environment where Baltic amber objects are stored and displayed.

The challenge of the present work was to synthesize and to characterize new classes of N-containing polymers via palladium-catalyzed aryl amination. This work was inspired by a desire to combine the properties of high-performance polymers such as PEKs with those of N-containing conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), poly(aromatic amides) (PAAs), and the ready synthesis of N-containing simple aromatic compound by the Buchwald-Hartwig reaction. Careful investigation of a model reaction was carried out to provide insights into the formation of side products which will have a negative effect upon the molecular weight or upon the materials properties of the desired polymers in the polycondensation reaction. In this thesis, five new different polymer classes namely, poly(imino ketone)s (PIKs), poly(imino acridine)s (PIAcs), poly(imino azobenzene)s (PIAzos), poly(imino fluorenone)s (PIFOs), and poly(imino carbazole)s (PICs) were synthesized and fully characterized by means of 1H-NMR, elemental analysis, UV, FT-IR, X-ray, GPC, TGA, DSC, DMA, and dielectric spectroscopy. To optimize the polycondensation process, the influence of the concentration, temperature, ligands and the reactivity of the halogen containing monomers were investigated. A temperature of 100-165 °C and a concentration of 30-36 % were found to be optimal for the palladium-catalyzed polycondensation to produce polymer with high molecular weight (Mn = 85 900, Mw = 474 500, DP = 126). Four different ligands were used successfully in the Pd-catalyzed process, of which the Pd/BINAP system was found to be the most effective catalyst, producing the highest yield and highest molecular weight polymers. It was found that the reactivity decreases strongly with increasing electronegativity of the halogen atoms, for example better yields, and higher molecular weights were obtained by using dibromo compounds than dichloro compounds while difluoro compounds were totally unreactive. Polymer analogous transformations, such as the protonation reaction of the ring nitrogens in PIAcs, or of the azobenzene groups of PIAzos, the photo and thermal cis-trans-isomerization of PIAzos, and of poly(imino alcohol)s were also studied. The values of the dielectric constants of PIKs at 1 MHz were in the range 2.71-3.08. These low values of the dielectric constant are lower than that of "H Film", a polyimide Kapton film which is one of the most preferred high-performance dielectrics in microelectronic applications having a dielectric constant of 3.5. In addition to the low values of the dielectric constants, PIKs have lower and glass transition temperatures (Tgs) than arimides such as Kapton which may make them more easily processable. Cyclic voltammetry showed that PICs exhibited low oxidation and reduction potentials and their values were shifted to low values with increasing degree of polymerization i.e. with increasing of the carbazole content in backbone of PICs (PIC-7, 0.44, 0.33 V, DP= 37, PIC-5, 0.63, 0.46, DP= 16, respectively).
