The objective of this thesis is to shed light on the vertical vibration of granular materials for potential interest in the power generation industry. The main focus is investigating the drag force and frictional resistance that influence the movement of a granular material (in the form of glass beads) contained in a vessel, which is subjected to sinusoidal oscillation. The thesis is divided into three parts: theoretical analysis, experiments and computer simulations. The theoretical part of this study presents the underlying physical phenomena of the vibration of granular materials. Experiments are designed to determine fundamental parameters that contribute to the behavior of vibrating granular media. Numerical simulations include the use of three different software applications: FLUENT, LS-DYNA and ANSYS Workbench. The goal of these simulations is to test theoretical and semiempirical models for granular materials in order to validate their compatibility with the experimental findings, to assist in predicting their behavior, and to estimate quantities that are hard to measure in laboratory.

Spatiotemporal chaos is predicted to occur in n-doped semiconductor superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling as their main charge transport mechanism. Under dc voltage bias, undamped time-dependent oscillations of the current (due to the motion and recycling of electric field domain walls) have been observed in recent experiments. Chaos is the result of forcing this natural oscillation by means of an appropriate external microwave signal.

Synchronous motors are used mainly in large drives, for example in ship propulsion systems and in steel factories' rolling mills because of their high efficiency, high overload capacity and good performance in the field weakening range. This, however, requires an extremely good torque control system. A fast torque response and a torque accuracy are basic requirements for such a drive. For large power, high dynamic performance drives the commonly known principle of field oriented vector control has been used solely hitherto, but nowadays it is not the only way to implement such a drive. A new control method Direct Torque Control (DTC) has also emerged. The performance of such a high quality torque control as DTC in dynamically demanding industrial applications is mainly based on the accurate estimate of the various flux linkages' space vectors. Nowadays industrial motor control systems are real time applications with restricted calculation capacity. At the same time the control system requires a simple, fast calculable and reasonably accurate motor model. In this work a method to handle these problems in a Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) salient pole synchronous motor drive is proposed. A motor model which combines the induction law based "voltage model" and motor inductance parameters based "current model" is presented. The voltage model operates as a main model and is calculated at a very fast sampling rate (for example 40 kHz). The stator flux linkage calculated via integration from the stator voltages is corrected using the stator flux linkage computed from the current model. The current model acts as a supervisor that prevents only the motor stator flux linkage from drifting erroneous during longer time intervals. At very low speeds the role of the current model is emphasised but, nevertheless, the voltage model always stays the main model. At higher speeds the function of the current model correction is to act as a stabiliser of the control system. The current model contains a set of inductance parameters which must be known. The validation of the current model in steady state is not self evident. It depends on the accuracy of the saturated value of the inductances. Parameter measurement of the motor model where the supply inverter is used as a measurement signal generator is presented. This so called identification run can be performed prior to delivery or during drive commissioning. A derivation method for the inductance models used for the representation of the saturation effects is proposed. The performance of the electrically excited synchronous motor supplied with the DTC inverter is proven with experimental results. It is shown that it is possible to obtain a good static accuracy of the DTC's torque controller for an electrically excited synchronous motor. The dynamic response is fast and a new operation point is achieved without oscillation. The operation is stable throughout the speed range. The modelling of the magnetising inductance saturation is essential and cross saturation has to be considered as well. The effect of cross saturation is very significant. A DTC inverter can be used as a measuring equipment and the parameters needed for the motor model can be defined by the inverter itself. The main advantage is that the parameters defined are measured in similar magnetic operation conditions and no disagreement between the parameters will exist. The inductance models generated are adequate to meet the requirements of dynamically demanding drives.

We show the existence of families of hip-hop solutions in the equal-mass 2N-body problem which are close to highly eccentric planar elliptic homographic motions of 2N bodies plus small perpendicular non-harmonic oscillations. By introducing a parameter ϵ, the homographic motion and the small amplitude oscillations can be uncoupled into a purely Keplerian homographic motion of fixed period and a vertical oscillation described by a Hill type equation. Small changes in the eccentricity induce large variations in the period of the perpendicular oscillation and give rise, via a Bolzano argument, to resonant periodic solutions of the uncoupled system in a rotating frame. For small ϵ ≠ 0, the topological transversality persists and Brouwer's fixed point theorem shows the existence of this kind of solutions in the full system

This study presents a catalogue of synoptic patterns of torrential rainfall in northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (IP). These circulation patterns were obtained by applying a T-mode Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a daily data grid (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) at sea level pressure (SLP). The analysis made use of 304 days which recorded >100 mm in one or more stations in provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona (coastland area of Catalonia) throughout the 1950-2005 period. The catalogue comprises 7 circulation patterns showing a great variety of atmospheric conditions and seasonal or monthly distribution. Likewise, we computed the mean index value of the Western Mediterranean Oscillation index (WeMOi) for the synoptic patterns obtained by averaging all days grouped in each pattern. The results showed a clear association between the negative values of this teleconnection index and torrential rainfall in northeast of the IP. We therefore put forward the WeMO as an essential tool for forecasting heavy rainfall in northeast of Spain

Lisäksi virityspiiri hyvyysluku Q on vaikea saada sopivaksi, mikäli viritys on muuten käytännöllinen, säädettävä resonanssipiiri. Vaadittaessa kiinteätaajuista viritystä on käytännöllistä hyödyntää sähkömekaanisia osia, siis keraamisia tai kvartsikiteitä. Koska kiteitten ja korkean hyvyysluvun piirin värähtely jatkuu useita värähtelyjaksoja ennen saapuneitten värähtelyjen sammumista, kestää myös kauan aikaa, ennen kuin värähtely piirissä on loppu. Pienitaajuinen resonanssipiiri saavuttaa maksimivirtansa hitaasti, jos hyvyysluku on iso, kun piiri alkaa johtaa resonanssitaajuista virtaa. Tässä työssä pyritään vastaanotinjärjestelyyn ongelmallisen, pientaajuisen virityspiirin käytön välttämiseksi. Toisena tavoitteena on saada aikaan vastaanotto siten, että tietty pienitaajuinen radiotaajuusalue voidaan kokonaisuudessaan vastaanottaa jatkuva-aikaisesti, ilman antennipiirin jatkuvaa virittämistä erillisille taajuuksille. Laaditaan kytkentä, joka mitoitetaan, simuloidaan ja mitataan.

We show how certain N-dimensional dynamical systems are able to exploit the full instability capabilities of their fixed points to do Hopf bifurcations and how such a behavior produces complex time evolutions based on the nonlinear combination of the oscillation modes that emerged from these bifurcations. For really different oscillation frequencies, the evolutions describe robust wave form structures, usually periodic, in which selfsimilarity with respect to both the time scale and system dimension is clearly appreciated. For closer frequencies, the evolution signals usually appear irregular but are still based on the repetition of complex wave form structures. The study is developed by considering vector fields with a scalar-valued nonlinear function of a single variable that is a linear combination of the N dynamical variables. In this case, the linear stability analysis can be used to design N-dimensional systems in which the fixed points of a saddle-node pair experience up to N21 Hopf bifurcations with preselected oscillation frequencies. The secondary processes occurring in the phase region where the variety of limit cycles appear may be rather complex and difficult to characterize, but they produce the nonlinear mixing of oscillation modes with relatively generic features

In this study honey samples produced in the southwest of Bahia were characterized based on physicochemical and mineral (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Fe and Zn) composition. The metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The application of multivariate analysis showed that the honey colors are consequence of the mineral and physicochemical compositions. The darkest honey samples are characterized by higher values of pH and for presenting a strong relationship with Ca and Fe content.

Paperiteollisuuden prosessituotteista paperia varastoidaan erikokoisina rullina esim. pystyrullavarastoihin. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli kehittää Konecranesin prosessinosturille liityntä paperirullia käsittelevän kuormauselimen ja nosturin välille. Tavoitteena oli löytää kiinnitysmenetelmä, joka mahdollistaa nosturien joustavan käytön mahdollisimman pienin muutoksin itse nosturin standardoituun rakenteeseen. Pääasiallisena syventymisen kohteena oli alipaineella paperirullia nostettavan kuormauselimen liityntä. Liitynnän on kyettävä joustamaan ja vaimentamaan paperirullia nostavaan kuormauselimeen nosturin liikkeelle lähdöstä ja pysähtymisestä syntyvät herätteet ja voimat. Nosturin liikenopeus on kyettävä pitämään mahdollisimman suurena lyhyen rullienkäsittelyajan saavuttamiseksi. Liitynnältä vaaditaan kykyä ottaa kuormauselin vastaan mahdollisimman suurella nostonopeudella. Lisäksi kuorman ja kuormauselimen oskillaatio on vaimennettava mahdollisimman nopeasti samalla rajoittaen heilunnasta aiheutuvaa maksimi siirtymää. Liitynnän suunnittelu pohjautuu nosturin, kuormauselimen ja paperirullan muodostaman systeemin teoreettiseen tarkasteluun. Systeemistä laadittiin dynaaminen malli, jonka avulla tutkittiin oskillaation ja syntyvien kiihtyvyyksien suuruutta. Näiden teoriaan perustuvien tuloksien pohjalta suunniteltiin vaimennukseen tarvittavat vaimennuselementit ja liitynnän rakenne. Suunnittelutyön tuloksena saatiin liitynnälle alustava rakenne, joka mahdollistaa käytettävien vaimennuselementtien vaihtamisen ja siten tehokkaan heilunnan vaimmennuksen. Suunnittelutyön lähtökohtana oleva teoreettinen tarkastelu vaatii tuekseen esim. prototyypin kokeellisten tulosten saamiseksi ennen lopullisen tuotteen valmistamista. Suunnitteluprosessissa noudatettiin järjestelmällisen tuotesuunnittelun vaiheita ja menetelmiä.

A distinctive design feature of steam boiler with natural circulation is the presence of the steam drum which plays a role of the separator of vapor from the flow of water-and-steam mixture coming into steam drum from the furnace tubes. Steam drum with unheated downcomer tubes, deducing from it, and riser (screen/furnace tubes) inside the furnace is a closed circulation loop in which movement of water (downcomer tubes) and water-and-steam mixture (riser tubes) is organized. The movement of the working fluid is appears due to occurrence of the natural pressure, determined by the difference in hydrostatic pressure and the mass of water and water-and-steam mixtures in downcomer and riser tubes and called the driving pressure of the natural circulation: S drive = H steam (ρ down + ρ mix) g where: ρ down - density of water in downcomer tubes; ρ mix - density of water in riser tubes; H steam - height of steam content section; g - acceleration of gravity. In steam boilers with natural circulation the circulation rate is usually between 10 and 30. Thus, consumption of water in the circulation circuit “circulation rate times” more than steam output of the boiler. There are two aspects of the design of natural water circulation loops. One is to ensure a sufficient mass flux of circulating water to avoid burnout of evaporator tubes. The other is to avoid tube wall temperature fluctuation and tube vibration due to oscillation of circulation velocity. The design criteria are therefore reduced, in principle, to those of critical heat flux, critical flow rate for burnout, and flow instability. In practical design, however, the circulation velocity and the void fraction at the evaporator tube outlet are used as the design criteria (Seikan I., et. al., 1999). This study has been made with assumption that the heat flux in the furnace of the boiler even all the time. The target of the study was to define the circulation rate of the boiler, thus average heat flux do not change it. I would like to acknowledge professionals from “Foster Wheeler” company for good and comfortable cooperation.
