This work describes the use of a large-aperture PVDF receiver in the measurement of liquid density and composite material elastic constants. The density measurement of several liquids is obtained with accuracy of 0.2% using a conventional NDE emitter transducer and a 70-mm-diameter, 52-mu m P(VDF-TrFE) membrane with gold electrodes. The determination of the elastic constants is based on the phase velocity measurement. Diffraction can lead to errors around 1% in velocity measurement when using alternatively the conventional pair of ultrasonic transducers (1-MHz frequency and 19-mm-diameter) operating in through-transmission mode, separated by a distance of 100 mm. This effect is negligible when using a pair of 10-MHz, 19-mm-diameter transducers. Nevertheless, the dispersion at 10 MHz can result in errors of about 0.5%, when measuring the velocity in composite materials. The use of an 80-mm diameter, 52-mu m-thick PVDF membrane receiver practically eliminates the diffraction effects in phase velocity measurement. The elastic constants of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer were determined and compared with the values obtained by a tensile test. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The paper presents and discusses experimental procedures, visual observations and test results considered important to obtain data that can be used in validation of constitutive relations and failure criteria. The aim is to investigate the combined effects of stress intensity, stress-triaxiality and Lode parameter on the material response and failure behavior of aluminum alloys. Smooth and pre-notched tensile and shear specimens were manufactured from both very thin sheets and thicker plates to cover a wide range of stress triaxialities and Lode parameters. In addition, modified Arcan specimens were designed allowing investigation of the effect of sudden changes in stress states and deformation modes on the material behavior. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Tailoring specified vibration modes is a requirement for designing piezoelectric devices aimed at dynamic-type applications. A technique for designing the shape of specified vibration modes is the topology optimization method (TOM) which finds an optimum material distribution inside a design domain to obtain a structure that vibrates according to specified eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes. Nevertheless, when the TOM is applied to dynamic problems, the well-known grayscale or intermediate material problem arises which can invalidate the post-processing of the optimal result. Thus, a more natural way for solving dynamic problems using TOM is to allow intermediate material values. This idea leads to the functionally graded material (FGM) concept. In fact, FGMs are materials whose properties and microstructure continuously change along a specific direction. Therefore, in this paper, an approach is presented for tailoring user-defined vibration modes, by applying the TOM and FGM concepts to design functionally graded piezoelectric transducers (FGPT) and non-piezoelectric structures (functionally graded structures-FGS) in order to achieve maximum and/or minimum vibration amplitudes at certain points of the structure, by simultaneously finding the topology and material gradation function. The optimization problem is solved by using sequential linear programming. Two-dimensional results are presented to illustrate the method.

We have synthesized phenylene-vinylene (PV) polymers containing segments with different conjugation lengths interspaced by random distributed aliphatic segments. Infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the prepared copolymers` structures. Polymers molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effect of polymer structure and composition on emission properties was studied by fluorescence (PL) spectroscopy under different irradiation wavelength. The emission energy shift due to segments with longer conjugation lengths was minor owed to the low polymerization degree achieved.

We report on the detection of the transport Barkhausen-like noise (TBN) in polycrystalline samples of Bi(1.65)Pb(0.35)Sr(2)Ca(2) Cu(3)O(10+delta) (Bi-2223) which were subjected to different uniaxial compacting pressures. The transport Barkhausen-like noise was measured when the sample was subjected to an ac triangular-shape magnetic field (f similar to 1 Hz) with maximum amplitude B(max) approximate to 5.5 mT, in order to avoid the flux penetration within the superconducting grains. Analysis of the TBN signal, measured for several values of excitation current density, indicated that the applied magnetic field in which the noise signal first appears, B(a)(t(i)), is closely related to the magnetic-flux pinning capability of the material. The combined results are consistent with the existence of three different superconducting levels within the samples: (i) the superconducting grains; (ii) the superconducting clusters; and (iii) the weak-links. We finally argue that TBN measurements constitute a powerful tool for probing features of the intergranular transport properties in polycrystalline samples of high-T(c) superconductors. This study aimed at evaluating the mechanical, physical and biological properties of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) made from Pinus oocarpa Schiede ex Schltdl (PO) and Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon (PK) and at providing a nondestructive characterization thereof. Four PO and four PK LVL boards from 22 randomly selected 2-mm thickness veneers were produced according to the following characteristics: phenol-formaldehyde (190 g/m(2)), hot-pressing at 150A degrees C for 45 min and 2.8 N/mm(2) of specific pressure. After board production, nondestructive evaluation was conducted, and stress wave velocity (v (0)) and dynamic modulus of elasticity (E (Md) ) were determined. The following mechanical and physical properties were then evaluated: static bending modulus of elasticity (E (M) ), modulus of rupture (f (M) ), compression strength parallel to grain (f (c,0)), shear strength parallel to glue-line (f (v,0)), shear strength perpendicular to glue-line (f (v,90)), thickness swelling (TS), water absorption (WA), and permanent thickness swelling (PTS) for 2, 24, and 96-hour of water immersion. Biological property was also evaluated by measuring the weight loss by Trametes versicolor (Linnaeus ex Fries) Pilat (white-rot) and Gloeophyllum trabeum (Persoon ex Fries.) Murrill (brown-rot). After hot-pressing, no bubbles, delamination nor warping were observed for both species. In general, PK boards presented higher mechanical properties: E (M) , E (Md) , f (M) , f (c,0) whereas PO boards were dimensionally more stable, with lower values of WA, TS and PTS in the 2, 24, and 96-hour immersion periods. Board density, f (v,0), f (v,90) and rot weight loss were statistically equal for PO and PK LVL. The prediction of flexural properties of consolidated LVL by the nondestructive method used was not very efficient, and the fitted models presented lower predictability.

The possibility of producing valued devices from low cost natural resources is a subject of broad interest. The present study explores the preparation and characterization of silk fibroin dense membranes using waste silk fibers from textile processing. Morphology, crystallinity, thermal resistance and cytotoxicity of membranes as well as the changes on the secondary structure of silk fibroin were analyzed after undergoing treatment with ethanol. Membranes presented amorphous patterns as determined via X-ray diffraction. The secondary structure of silk fibroin on dense membranes was either random coil (silk I) or p-sheet (silk II), before and after ethanol treatment, respectively. The sterilized membranes presented no cytotoxicity to endothelial cells during in vitro assays. This fact stresses the material potential to be used in the fabrication of biomaterials, as coatings of cardiovascular devices and as membranes for wound dressing or drug delivery systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different crucible materials on the thermal analysis of binary systems. The thermal properties of two distinct solutions were measured both by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and freeze-drying microscopy and the results were compared. The glass transition of the maximally freeze-concentrate (T (g)`) and the eutectic melting temperature (T (eut)) were not influenced by the crucible material. However the heat of fusion (Delta H) involved during the T (eut) as well as the Delta C (p) involved during the T (g)` of the solutions were affected.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC), also known as amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H), are a class of materials with excellent mechanical, tribological and biological properties. When the DLC films are enhanced with other elements, all of these properties can be changed within a certain range. In this work, reactive magnetron sputtering was used to deposit W-DLC (hydrogenated tungsten carbide) films on Ti6A14V (implant material). Many films were made using pure tungsten (99.99%) target and different plasmas processes, with different ratio among argon and methane. It was possible to change the films composition (from pure amorphous carbon to carbon enhanced with tungsten) according to ratio of argon and methane plasma. Between all films processed, the carbon films enhanced with tungsten showed good results in the ""in vitro"" cytotoxicity testing. Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze the chemical bonds kinds and the chemical bonds quantities. The Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS) was used to analyze the films compositions. The chemical inertness was analyzed by scanning voltametry. W-DLC thin films obtained in these processes have low roughness, high chemical resistance, good adhesion and show a high biocompatibility, when compared with common DLC thin films. Hence we have concluded that the tungsten concentrations in the DLC films make an important role to improve the properties of the DLC layers. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In addition to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, mitochondria have been implicated in the regulation of several physiological responses in plants, such as programmed cell death (PCD) activation. Salicylic acid (SA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential signaling molecules involved in such physiological responses; however, the mechanisms by which they act remain unknown. In non-photosynthesizing tissues, mitochondria appear to serve as the main source of ROS generation. Evidence suggests that SA and ROS could regulate plant PCD through a synergistic mechanism that involves mitochondria. Herein, we isolate and characterize the mitochondria from non-photosynthesizing cell suspension cultures of Rubus fruticosus. Furthermore, we assess the primary site of ROS generation and the effects of SA on isolated organelles. Mitochondrial Complex III was found to be the major source of ROS generation in this model. In addition, we discovered that SA inhibits the electron transport chain by inactivating the semiquinone radical during the Q cycle. Computational analyses confirmed the experimental data, and a mechanism for this action is proposed.

Photolysis of the nitrato chromium(III) tetraphenylporphyrinato compound Cr(TPP)(NO(3)) (TPP, tetraphenylporphyrin) in toluene solution clearly leads to the formation of the Cr(IV) oxo complex Cr(TPP)(O) with a quantum yield of 0.011. The other product, NO(2), was detected quantitatively by its reaction with the spin trapping agent 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl.

A simple method was optimized and validated for determination of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) in raw material and feed additives by HPLC for use in quality control in veterinary industries. The best-optimized conditions were a C8 column (250 x 4.6 mm id, 5.0 mu m particle size) at room temperature with acetonitrile-100 mM sodium acetate buffer (pH 5.0; 75 + 25, v/v) mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and UV detection at 275 nm. With these conditions, the retention time of RAC was around 5.2 min, and standard curves were linear in the concentration range of 160-240 mu g/mL (correlation coefficient >= 0.999). Validation parameters, such as selectivity, linearity, limit of detection (ranged from 1.60 to 2.05 mu g/mL), limit of quantification (ranged from 4.26 to 6.84 mu g/mL), precision (relative standard deviation <= 1.87%), accuracy (ranged from 96.97 to 100.54%), and robustness, gave results within acceptable ranges. Therefore, the developed method can be successfully applied for the routine quality control analysis of raw material and feed additives.

The aim of present study was to verify the in vitro antitumor activity of a ruthenium complex, cis-(dichloro)tetraammineruthenium(III) chloride (cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl) toward different tumor cell lines. The antitumor studies showed that ruthenium(III) complex presents a relevant cytotoxic activity against murine B cell lymphoma (A-20), murine ascitic sarcoma 180 (S-180), human breast adenocarcinoma (SK-BR-3), and human T cell leukemia (Jurkat) cell lines and a very low cytotoxicity toward human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The ruthenium(III) complex decreased the fraction of tumor cells in G0/G1 and/or G2-M phases, indicating that this compound may act on resting/early entering G0/G1 cells and/or precycling G2-M cells. The cytotoxic activity of a high concentration (2 mg mL(-1)) of cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl toward Jurkat cells correlated with an increased number of annexin V-positive cells and also the presence of DNA fragmentation, suggesting that this compound induces apoptosis in tumor cells. The development of new antineoplastic medications demands adequate knowledge in order to avoid inefficient or toxic treatments. Thus, a mechanistic understanding of how metal complexes achieve their activities is crucial to their clinical success and to the rational design of new compounds with improved potency.

Ruthenium compounds in general are well suited for medicinal applications. They have been investigated as immunosuppressants, nitric oxide scavengers, antimicrobial agents, and antimalarials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the immunomodulatory activity of cis-(dichloro) tetraammineruthenium(III) chloride (cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl) on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The cytotoxic studies performed here revealed that the ruthenium( III) complex presents a cytotoxic activity towards normal human PBMC, only at very high concentration. Results also showed that cis-[ RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl presents a dual role on PBMC stimulating proliferation and interleukin-2 (IL-2) production at low concentration and inducing cytotoxicity, inability to proliferate, and inhibiting IL-2 production at high concentration. The noncytotoxic activity of cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl at low concentration towards PBMC, which correlates with the small number of annexin V positive cells and also the absence of DNA fragmentation, suggest that this compound does not induce apoptosis on PBMC. For the first time, we show that, at low concentration (10-100 mu g L(-1)), the cis-[ RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl compound induces peripheral blood lymphocytes proliferation and also stimulates them to IL-2 production. These results open a new potential applicability of ruthenium(III) complexes as a possible immune regulatory compound acting as immune suppressor at high concentration and as immune stimulator at low concentration.

Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions containing gel phase were developed with cupuassu and/or cocoa butter from Brazilian ecosystem. They were subjected to storage advanced stability tests (SAST) and to in vivo corneometry evaluation. The evaluated emulsions showed great performance in the evaluated conditions considering that no significant variation was observed. The moisturizing potential was advantageous even without the moisturizing active. The formulation was considered a good cosmetic moisturizing cream and a promise as a drug carrier.
