The proposed EC Water Framework Directive (WFD) will require member states to monitor both biotic and abiotic components of lake environments. With adoption of the WFD some measurement of fish populations will also be required. This paper describes work carried out since 1971, and particularly since 1991, on the status of fish populations in Lower Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, with an emphasis on defining change over time due to human impacts on the lake. This offers a reasonable starting point from which to develop a monitoring programme suitable for the needs of the WFD in this lake. The implications for as yet unmonitored fish populations in lakes are also determined.

In four chapters various aspects of earthquake source are studied.
Chapter I
Surface displacements that followed the Parkfield, 1966, earthquakes were measured for two years with six small-scale geodetic networks straddling the fault trace. The logarithmic rate and the periodic nature of the creep displacement recorded on a strain meter made it possible to predict creep episodes on the San Andreas fault. Some individual earthquakes were related directly to surface displacement, while in general, slow creep and aftershock activity were found to occur independently. The Parkfield earthquake is interpreted as a buried dislocation.
Chapter II
The source parameters of earthquakes between magnitude 1 and 6 were studied using field observations, fault plane solutions, and surface wave and S-wave spectral analysis. The seismic moment, MO, was found to be related to local magnitude, ML, by log MO = 1.7 ML + 15.1. The source length vs magnitude relation for the San Andreas system found to be: ML = 1.9 log L - 6.7. The surface wave envelope parameter AR gives the moment according to log MO = log AR300 + 30.1, and the stress drop, τ, was found to be related to the magnitude by τ = 0.54 M - 2.58. The relation between surface wave magnitude MS and ML is proposed to be MS = 1.7 ML - 4.1. It is proposed to estimate the relative stress level (and possibly the strength) of a source-region by the amplitude ratio of high-frequency to low-frequency waves. An apparent stress map for Southern California is presented.
Chapter III
Seismic triggering and seismic shaking are proposed as two closely related mechanisms of strain release which explain observations of the character of the P wave generated by the Alaskan earthquake of 1964, and distant fault slippage observed after the Borrego Mountain, California earthquake of 1968. The Alaska, 1964, earthquake is shown to be adequately described as a series of individual rupture events. The first of these events had a body wave magnitude of 6.6 and is considered to have initiated or triggered the whole sequence. The propagation velocity of the disturbance is estimated to be 3.5 km/sec. On the basis of circumstantial evidence it is proposed that the Borrego Mountain, 1968, earthquake caused release of tectonic strain along three active faults at distances of 45 to 75 km from the epicenter. It is suggested that this mechanism of strain release is best described as "seismic shaking."
Chapter IV
The changes of apparent stress with depth are studied in the South American deep seismic zone. For shallow earthquakes the apparent stress is 20 bars on the average, the same as for earthquakes in the Aleutians and on Oceanic Ridges. At depths between 50 and 150 km the apparent stresses are relatively high, approximately 380 bars, and around 600 km depth they are again near 20 bars. The seismic efficiency is estimated to be 0.1. This suggests that the true stress is obtained by multiplying the apparent stress by ten. The variation of apparent stress with depth is explained in terms of the hypothesis of ocean floor consumption.

Single nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) are a source of diversity among human population, which may be responsible for the different individual susceptibility to diseases and/or response to drugs, among other phenotypic traits. Several low penetrance susceptibility genes associated with malignant melanoma (MM) have been described, including genes related to pigmentation, DNA damage repair and oxidative stress pathways. In the present work, we conducted a candidate gene association study based on proteins and genes whose expression we had detected altered in melanoma cell lines as compared to normal melanocytes. The result was the selection of 88 loci and 384 SNPs, of which 314 fulfilled our quality criteria for a case-control association study. The SNP rs6854854 in ANXA5 was statistically significant after conservative Bonferroni correction when 464 melanoma patients and 400 controls were analyzed in a discovery Phase I. However, this finding could not be replicated in the validation phase, perhaps because the minor allele frequency of SNP rs6854854 varies depending on the geographical region considered. Additionally, a second SNP (rs6431588) located on ILKAP was found to be associated with melanoma after considering a combined set of 1,883 MM cases and 1,358 disease-free controls. The OR was 1.29 (95% CI 1.12-1.48; p-value= 4x10(-4)). Both SNPs, rs6854854 in ANXA5 and rs6431588 in ILKAP, show population structure, which, assuming that the Spanish population is not significantly structured, suggests a role of these loci on a specific genetic adaptation to different environmental conditions. Furthermore, the biological relevance of these genes in MM is supported by in vitro experiments, which show a decrease in the transcription levels of ANXA5 and ILKAP in melanoma cells compared to normal melanocytes.

Optical properties and microstructure of Ag film on glass substrate with Cr intermediate layer were studied by using spectrophotometer and XRD. The spectra results showed that introducing Cr intermediate layer reduced the surface roughness and promoted the reflectivity of Ag film. The XRD analysis showed that the crystalline grains increased and the stress decreased. The adhesion was also improved by using the tape test method. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The optical absorption edge and ultraviolet (UV) emission energy of ZnO films deposited by direct current (DC) reactive magnetron sputtering at room temperature have been investigated. With the oxygen ratio increasing, the structure of films changes from zinc and zinc oxide coexisting phase to single-phase ZnO and finally to the highly (002) orientation. Both the grain size and the stress of ZnO film vary with the oxygen partial pressure. Upon increasing the oxygen partial pressure in the growing ambient, the visible emission in the room-temperature photoluminescence spectra was suppressed without sacrificing the band-edge emission intensity in the ultraviolet region. The peaks of photoluminescence spectra were located at 3.06---3.15 eV. From optical transmittance spectra of ZnO films, the optical band gap edge was observed to shift towards shorter wavelength with the increase of oxygen partial pressure.

The single- and multi-shot damage behaviors of HfO2/SiO2 high-reflecting (HR) coatings under Nd:YAG laser exposure were investigated. Fundamental aspects of multi-shot laser damage, such as the instability due to pulse-to-pulse accumulation of absorption defect and structural defect effect, and the mechanism of laser induced defect generation, are considered. It was found in multi-shot damage, the main factors influencing laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) are accumulation of irreversible changes of structural defects and thermal stress that induced by thermal density fluctuations.

ZrO2 thin films were prepared by electron beam evaporation at different oxygen partial pressures. The influences of oxygen partial pressure on structure and related properties of ZrO2 thin films were studied. Transmittance, thermal absorption, structure and residual stress of ZrO2 thin films were measured by spectrophotometer, surface thermal lensing technique (STL), X-ray diffraction and optical interferometer, respectively. The results showed that the structure and related properties varied progressively with the increase of oxygen partial pressure. The refractive indices and the packing densities of the thin films decreased when the oxygen partial pressure increased. The tetragonal phase fraction in the thin films decreased gradually as oxygen partial pressure increased. The residual stress of film deposited at base pressure was high compressive stress, the value decreased with the increase of oxygen partial pressure, and the residual stress became tensile with the further increase of oxygen pressure, which was corresponding to the evolution of packing densities and variation of interplanar distances. The coastal Pacific Ocean off northern and central California encompasses the strongest seasonal upwelling zone in the California Current ecosystem. Headlands and bays here generate complex circulation features and confer unusual oceanographic complexity. We sampled the coastal epipelagic fish community of this region with a surface trawl in the summer and fall of 2000–05 to assess patterns of spatial and temporal community structure. Fifty-three species of fish were captured in 218 hauls at 34 fixed stations, with clupeiform species dominating. To examine spatial patterns, samples were grouped by location relative to a prominent headland at Point Reyes and the resulting two regions, north coast and Gulf of the Farallones, were plotted by using nonmetric multidimensional scaling. Seasonal and interannual patterns were also examined, and representative species were identified for each distinct community. Seven oceanographic variables measured concurrently with trawling were plotted by principal components analysis and tested for correlation with biotic patterns. We found significant differences in community structure by region, year, and season, but no interaction among main effects. Significant differences in oceanographic conditions mirrored the biotic patterns, and a match between biotic and hydrographic structure was detected. Dissimilarity between assemblages was mostly the result of differences in abundance and frequency of occurrence of about twelve common species. Community patterns were best described by a subset of hydrographic variables, including water depth, distance from shore, and any one of several correlated variables associated with upwelling intensity. Rather than discrete communities with clear borders and distinct member species, we found gradients in community structure and identified stations with similar fish communities by region and by proximity to features such as the San Francisco Bay.

The effects of stocking density (10, 15, 50 & 75 fish in 65L tank) and ammonia excretion on the growth of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (12.19 ± 1.21 g) were investigated. Increasing stocking density of Nile tilapia from 15 fish/tank (2.81 g fish/L) to 75 fish/tank (14.07 g fish/L) resulted in associated increase in ammonia level (1.48 ± 0.87 mg/L to 26.44 ± 11.4 mg/L) and significantly lower growth rates. Significantly better feed conversion ratios were found for fish reared at lower (15 fish/tank) stocking densities compared to higher (75 fish/tank) stocking densities. Individual growth rates were significantly better for fish reared at a lower stocking density 15 fish/tank compared to higher stocking density 75 fish/tank and size variation (coefficient of variation in weight) were positively correlated with stocking density. Although water exchange did not have a significant effect on the growth of Nile tilapia for fish stocked at 10 fish/tank (1.88 g fish/L) and 50 fish/tank (9.38 g fish/L), however, the fish in the higher stocking density (9.38 g fish/L) groups and without water exchange, significantly changed the coloration of their bodies (silver to black) which may be due to the lower oxygen levels combined with higher ammonia levels. Ammonia level increased with increasing stocking density and without water exchange. In this study, it may be suggested that when fish reared at higher stocking densities then water exchange must be taken in to consideration so as to help avoid environmental and physiological stress to the fish.

In this experiment, the feeding of Indian white shrimp larvae by unenriched rotifers (treatment 1) and enriched with highly unsaturated fatty acid (treatment 2) and highly unsaturated fatty acid along with vitamin C (treatment 3) on the growth factors, survival and resistance against salinity and formalin stress tests were studied and their differences with control treatment including newly hatched Artemia nauplii is compared. In this the study four treatments in a completely randomized design with 3 replicates per treatment were used. Farming of shrimp larvae of Zoea II to postlarvae 5 was done in 20 liter plastic bucket. Present results indicated that growth factors and survival rate of stage Zoea II to postlarvae 1 in treatments 1, 2 and 3 improve rather than control in which this case was due to optimal size rotifer rather than Artemia nauplii. Also, treatments 2 and 3 feeding with oil liver cod emulsion enriched rotifer have the highest concentration of DHA (mg/g DW) and the ratio DHA/EPA in which due to have shown the highest growth factors and a significant difference (P<0.05) with treatments 1 and control. The highest survival at stage PL1 were observed in treatment 3 that was enriched with ascorbyl palmitate in which have to the synergistic properties of vitamin C rather than treatments 2, 1 and control and showed a significant difference (P<0.05). But in stage PL5 the highest amount of growth and survival rates were related to control treatment which showed a significant difference (P<0.05) with other treatments that control has higher size rather than treatments 1, 2 and 3. Also, among experiment treatments that the two treatments 2 and 3 due to enrichment had higher growth and survival rates compared with treatment 1 in which their differences have also been significant (P<0.05). In the case of stress tests, results indicated that the highest survival rate has been reported when specimens were offered a diet containing high levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids with vitamin C. So that in stage PL1 in the salinity stress tests 10 and 20 ppt the highest survival rate was observed in treatment 3. As for the second, treatment 2 showed a significant difference (P<0.05) with treatment 3. It is worth mentioning that treatment 3 showed a higher survival rate compared to treatment 2 due to the synergistic properties of vitamin C. The difference between these two treatments with treatment 1 and control was also significant. No significant difference was observed in formalin stress test 100 ppm in this stage between treatments 3 and 2 which shows the highest survival rate. But their difference with treatments 1 and control was significant (P<0.05). Also, in stage PL5 in the salinity stress tests 10 and 20 ppt the highest survival rate was observed in treatment 3 which showed no significant difference (P<0.05) with control treatment. While their difference in the amount of survival rate with treatment 1 and 2 was significant (P<0.05). In this stage, the highest observed survival rate in formalin stress test 100 ppm included treatments control, 3 and 2 among which there were no significant differences (P<0.05). While the difference between these three treatments with treatment 1 was significant.

This article presents results from conventional creep tests (CCT) and two accelerated test methods (the stepped isothermal method (SIM) and the stepped isostress method (SSM)) to determine the creep and creep-rupture behavior of two different aramid fibers, Kevlar 49 and Technora. CCT are regarded as the true behavior of the yarn, but they are impractical for long-term use where failures are expected only after many years. All the tests were carried out on the same batches of yarns, and using the same clamping arrangements, so the tests should be directly comparable. For both materials, SIM testing gives good agreement with CCT and gave stress-rupture lifetimes that followed the same trend. However, there was significant variation for SSM testing, especially when testing Technora fibers. The results indicate that Kevlar has a creep strain capacity that is almost independent of stress, whereas Technora shows a creep strain capacity that depends on stress. Its creep strain capacity is approximately two to three times that of Kevlar 49. The accelerated test methods give indirect estimates for the activation energy and the activation volume of the fibers. The activation energy for Technora is about 20% higher than that for Kevlar, meaning that it is less sensitive to the effects of increasing temperature. The activation volume for both materials was similar, and in both cases, stress dependent. Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Gas hydrate is a crystalline solid found within marine and subpermafrost sediments. While the presence of hydrates can have a profound effect on sediment properties, the stress-strain behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments is poorly understood due to inherent limitations in laboratory testing. In this study, we use numerical simulations to improve our understanding of the mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing sands. The hydrate mass is simulated as either small randomly distributed bonded grains or as "ripened hydrate" forming patchy saturation, whereby sediment clusters with 100% pore-filled hydrate saturation are distributed within a hydrate-free sediment. Simulation results reveal that reduced sand porosity and higher hydrate saturation cause an increase in stiffness, strength, and dilative tendency, and the critical state line shifts toward higher void ratio and higher shear strength. In particular, the critical state friction angle increases in sands with patchy saturation, while the apparent cohesion is affected the most when the hydrate mass is distributed in pores. Sediments with patchy hydrate distribution exhibit a slightly lower strength than sediments with randomly distributed hydrate. Finally, hydrate dissociation under drained conditions leads to volume contraction and/or stress relaxation, and pronounced shear strains can develop if the hydrate-bearing sand is subjected to deviatoric loading during dissociation.

Polyfluorinated and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are used in numerous commercial products and have been ubiquitously detected in the environment as well as in the blood of humans and wildlife. To assess the combined effects caused by PFCs in mixtures, gene expression profiles were generated using a custom cDNA microarray to detect changes in primary cultured hepatocytes of rare minnows exposed to six individual PFCs (perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorodecanoic acid, perfluorododecanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonate, and 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol) and four formulations of the PFCs mixtures. Mixtures as well as individual compounds consistently regulated a particular gene set, which suggests that these conserved genes may play a central role in the toxicity mediated by PFCs. Specifically, a number of genes regulated by the mixtures were identified in this study, which were not affected by exposure to any single component. These genes are implicated in multiple biological functions and processes, including fatty acid metabolism and transport, xenobiotic metabolism, immune responses, and oxidative stress. More than 80% of the altered genes in the PFOA- and PFOS-dominant mixture groups were of the same gene set, while the gene expression profiles from single PFOA and PFOS exposures were not as similar. This work contributes to the development of toxicogenomic approaches in combined toxicity assessment and allows for comprehensive insights into the combined action of PFCs mixtures in multiple environmental matrices.
